Then again, I remember Steinbrenner from the 80s and pretty much firing...and hiring...and firing...and hiring again. Nothing really stuck until Showwalter before Torre came in.

There are so few men like him in baseball, players, coaches, managers, etc, and to get rid of Torre would be a huge mistake. The Yankees may "suck", but they have some amazing players and personnel on their staff: Torre, Derek Jeter, Hideki Matsui, etc.

If Steinbrenner wants to cut some corners, he could start by getting rid of former MVP Alex Rodriguez, the most overhyped, overpaid, and under-performing player on the Yankees' team.

It never happened. Torre is coming back as Yankees manager next season. I guess Steinbrenner looked into the crystal ball and realized how much Torre has meant to the franchise over the last 11 years. Now, I'm not saying that I am going to start supporting the Yanks next year. In fact, I'll always hate them. I'm just saying that I've grown so used to seeing Torre at the helm for such a long period of time and seeing the Yankees have so much success under him that I couldn't possibly imagine the team havng anyone else as manager. It is exactly the same way I feel with seeing Bobby Cox at the helm for the Atlanta Braves for such a long period of time. He may have only won one World Series and has experienced numerous playoff failures in his tenure, but he has had some pretty darn good teams and players that helped him to compile those consecutive division titles. I couldn't ask for anything else out of a manager than that. I also couldn't possibly imagine any other Braves manager in the future having as much success as Cox has had.

Finally, you're right, Lexiapple, when you say that Steinbrenner should start his "rebuilding process" by getting rid of A-Rod. He is being paid way too much money to underacheive as badly as he is and only gets so much publicity and fame not because of his performance on the field but because he plays for the Yankees and in New York City, which is a place where any normal person walking on the street is going to be in the newspaper headlines and on the news because reporters in that city think everything deserves to be news in one way or another.
