I'm going to be the absolute critic here and just blurt out my feelings on their music and how it could be better.

Let me get this out of the way first. Amy is a great talent. Not only does she have a great voice, but she also knows how to sing (great control). In some ways I also think she is a musical genius in terms of melodies and as a writer of lyrics.

That said... I often wonder why she appeals to an audience that is mostly much younger than herself and why I feel there is always something missing when she sings.

So here's the deal. I think the feeling of something missing comes from her putting up an emotional block when she performs. It seems like when she is first creating the music and writing her lyrics the block isn't present... it is a true emotional release which is why her music is so powerful in the first place. However when she records it or performs on stage... I get the feeling like she is singing someone else’s song. As if she emotionally detaches herself from her own art and puts on an "act" to perform it. Maybe it's just me but I always feel like she sings VERY well and always has a lot of energy, but her performance is also devoid of emotion.. or the emotion she tries to express is being faked.

Maybe some other people can chime in if they have felt what I am talking about...

Also the problems that she writes about, and how she deals with them are pretty much the same as when she first started creating music... and a lot of time has passed since then. She has a tendency to be hurt easily, which is fine and is something that everyone can relate to, but she often reacts to being hurt by holding anger, and writing about how terrible it is instead of how she overcame it or became a better person through it. This is something that most people find as they get older... it's what matures people.

You can sing a song about how your boyfriend was a drunk and how much of an ass hole he is and appeal to young people who are dealing with it for the first time.

Or you can write about how drinking affects you, what you learned from being in a relationship like that, and hopefully became the better person and forgave the drunk... that would appeal to an older audience.

But a true artist can only write what they feel, and she if hasn't reached that point in her growth, then she will continue to appeal to people who are like her.. which are apparently those that are younger than herself.

Just my two cents...
