Not to mention highly unlikely, due to the backup brakes on pretty much every elevator manufactured in the last hundred years...if the cable breaks, there's a spring that pushes prongs out into notched tracks on either side of the elevator car, thus holding it in place and preventing it from plummeting down the shaft
