The Orphan Work Bill 2008

This was just brought to my attention on another message board. In short, there is propsed legislation going before US congress to strip all automatic copyrights away from artists, forcing them to register their work (for a fee) in order to have it protected. No only that, but unless you are able to catch someone else registering your own work within a specific period of time and deny them permission, you lose all rights to your work and you could then be sued for using/publishing them.

The bill can be found here.

And this is a good article.

I am just so appalled right now I can't even form cohesive statements.

As some of you know, I am currently studying graphic design. If that bill gets passed I don't think I would ever work in the United States, EVER.

The idea that my govt could do what they often do and cry 'me too' just makes me sick to my stomach. I beg every citizen of the USA here, PLEASE write to your congressmen/senators or whoever it is you bitch to about this. The consequences this would have on not just the art community, but anyone who likes taking happy snaps are enormous!
