I was having problems at first so I checked my BIOS. As it turns out, my CPU's frontside bus was clocking at 100mhz as opposed to 166mhz (what it's supposed to be). After changing this, the game ran like a dream.

To Luna: the 2.5ghz processor thing maybe true when it comes to Intel, but AMD's run at slower clock speeds. My 2600 athlon xp clocks in at 2.1ghz, but that is the equal of a much higher pentium 4 (not sure of the exact speed on the pentium).
2.5ghz P4 = 2500+ AMD

So slower clock speed "should" not matter, b/c AMD is more effecient. They gave it the 2500 name because it's able to keep up with a 2.5ghz P4 in most cases. The whole AMD naming scheme is based on what the chips are able to run up against. 2600+ = 2.6ghz

AeroFennec, if you have a DX 8 or DX 7 video card, that might explain why you get such good framerates. The card would be unable to draw out most of the advanced features, letting you get more fps vs extra details.
