Adeline Yen Mah-her books chinese cinderella and falling leaves. What makes them so sad and gripping is that you can't say to yourself "oh it's only a book it's not real" because every word of it is real and it must have been so hard for her growing up.

Charlotte Bronte (yeah old fashioned I know)- Jane Eyre is probably the best book I've ever read.
