Due to some ongoing abuse of PM's, chatroom, and posting privileges by some new folks coming in I've decided to tighten up the noose alittle on new members.

When a new person registers, they will still have to complete their 5 probation posts prior to becoming a normal member. During this time we have also disallowed chatroom access along with limiting their PM storage to 1 message. If the issues continue we may decide to turn PM's off entirely for a new member but we'll first see if these new adjustments will curb some of the stupidity running rampant around the site.

how will this affect the said noobies abilities to pm thier friendly neighborhood (assigned) welcoming committe member? i know when i was new there were a lot of questions i had that werent covered in the FAQ. i can see where the potential for abuse comes in, but in turn i would hate to have a source of needed info cut off as well.

just curious.

also, having reread the FAQ recently, there is some out of date info there, such as instructions concerning how to become a paid subscriber, and sections about the now non existant talk to the band forums.

an update would be VERY helpful, IMO. i would also not object to being asked to help with said update if you thought it was prudent.

Good question - how about three messages for the Inbox, and allow them to send three PM's?

I like the idea of having to make 25 posts before use of the chat room, then we can establish whether you are someone who has something interesting to say, or someone who will be like a Choirturd.

It gives the new members a chance to get fimiluar
with the site, and forums, posting, ect, ect.
Gosh, I remeber asking so many questions, like a hundred times a day,
and still do.
But seriously, I think this might help newer people, and its great, its going
to be on a trial basis, to see how things go!!

I think that if you can't figure out how to use and function in the forum properly than maybe you shouldn't be on it at all? Honestly, I think that if you read the FAQ than you should be able to roam and post pretty well. Unfotrunately I didn't read the FAQ when I first came on and acted a bit stupid.. Maybe if you made it so that all new members are required to read the FAQ before they are able to post and pm, and then if they really need to, let them have a few pms before they become a regular?

I second that thought. BUT it would create quite bit more work for the WC and the mods to actually pull off. kind of a judgement thing to see if dealing with stupidity outweighs good old fashiond proactive instruction on the part of the WC.

Guiding the new members to the FAQs and being proactive is the responsibility of the WC members. Of course Brainy, you are correct in pointing out that noobs need to have a certain amount of storage to be able to communicate with their designated WC guide. I also have ha a few run-ins with some beligerent new members in chat that were harassing members (particularly females.)

i very much agree. chat is a privledge not a right.
the amount of n00bs who come into chat and are disrespectful towards older members who are having intelligent conversations, rude and vulgar and just cross the boundary of decent behaviour is unbelievable. when a mod will boot then from the chat after warning they come straight back in and harass the hell out of everyone again. there are varying degrees to it, it could just be constant why aren't you talking to me sort of things to calling members whores etc etc etc some of you will know who i am thinking of here (a repeat offender under different accounts)
i also think 1 pm space is a little extreme if they are trying to reach their guide therefore 3 or 4 would be more then adequate due to the harrassment that is also ongoing through pm's

The 1 PM rule is a non-issue. The stipulation is that they must first delete a message before sending or receiving a new one. WC members who are mods have priveledges to over-ride this rule. As long as the WC member makes this clear to said n00b it shouldn't create a problem.
