It turns out that today, was in fact Melbourne's 171st birthday (who knew? (not I)). Anyway the mX had a few bits 'n' pieces on it including this which I found amusing.
Reasons why Melbourne is Australia's best city 1. We take pride in stopping work to watch horse racing. 2. You can't beat the scenery when you're stuck in a tram jam on St Kilda Rd. 3. We've stolen every major event worth srealing from every other capital. 4. We make a beer named after our own city, and our state. 5. Our CBD layout makes sense, unlike Sydney's. 6. Football is more important than anything else. (as it should be.) 7. We don't mind having a laugh at ourselves (we kept the Yellow Peril after all). 8. We're not Adelaide 9. Our winters are warm (well, today is). 10. It has a great, free afternoon newspaper. |

first of i love melbourne. i love pretty much everything about it. except the weather. the winters are icy and then the summers sweltering. my sister and i in summer would have to move downstairs to sleep. it would be to hot.
another downside. football is seen as way toooooooo important. like a religion and you know it is bad when people paint their houses to show their teams colour. eg black and white for the magpies but it wasnt just the exterior everything inside was black and white her hair included. i think that is just a bit obesive. and well no offense to ppl in adelaide. i have never been there but i have to agree melbourne gets points as it isn't adelaide. on a happy note anyone else get tickets to see the red hot chili peppers.

THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.
He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest. He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured. Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20349888-2,00.html
