Mrs Bhutto's body has been taken from Rawalpindi General Hospital, an air force plane is flying her body to the city of Sukkur in the south, for burial at her home town of Larkana.

Benazir Bhutto was born in 1953 and educated at Harvard and Oxford she followed her father into politics after he was executed in 1979.

She was twice prime minister of Pakistan, from 1988 to 1990, and from 1993 to 1996.

On both occasions she was dismissed from office by the president for alleged corruption.

At the height of her popularity she was one of the most high-profile women leaders in the world, but after her second fall from power, her name came to be synonymous with corruption and bad governance.

Mrs Bhutto went into exile and returned to Pakistan two months ago after President Musharraf granted an amnesty from corruption charges.

World leaders appeal for calm in Pakistan

World leaders have appealed for calm and warned that extremists must not be allowed to destabilise the nuclear armed nation.

Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has strongly condemned the murder and expressed his condolences to the people of Pakistan.

He says Mrs Bhutto had shown great courage and defiance throughout her life in her resistance to extremism.

India, has expressed its shock at the killing.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says the subcontinent has lost an outstanding leader who worked for democracy and reconciliation in her country.

Mr Singh said that the manner in which Mrs Bhutto was killed was a reminder of the common danger that the region faced from terrorism.

He called for the need to eradicate this dangerous threat.

India's foreign office also described Mrs Bhutto as a leader that worked for strengthening India Pakistan relations, which for the most part of their history has been a strained one.

A sad day in Pakistan indeed. I wonder if she was killed simply for being female?
From what I have, from speaking with as few Islamic friends, being a woman 'ruler' is not acceptable in Islam - still, this is no reason to murder her.

I just don't know what to say about this. The first I heard about this was only about 10 minutes ago. I was just so shocked, although we did know, as she did, that something like this may happen, but she stood up for what she believed in, and look where that got her.

i couldnt believe it when i heard it... i was at work feeding one of my residents and i just kind of paused with the spoon about 4 cm from this poor womens face.
not only is shocking that she was murdered but that so many supporters who turned out to see her were also killed or injured in the bomb blast

If you want to know what to make Benazir Bhutto’s murder in Pakistan, take well note.

There is the Pakistan of our illusion: the burgeoning democracy in whose vanguard are judges and lawyers and human rights activists using the “rule of law” as a cudgel to bring down a military desk.

Then there is the real Pakistan: a recent CNN poll showed that 46 percent of Pakistanis approve of Osama Bin Laden, I mean 46 percent an enemy of the United States and the West.

Scary.

Bilawal Zardari, now known as Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, is head of the PPP. He is the son of Benazir Bhutto. He is only 19 years old.

He is an Oxford student studying history and political science.

As an almost-19-year-old, I can say this honestly: my God. I can barely keep my room organized. I can't imagine that much pressure. Heaven help him, his family, and of course, Pakistan.

^ I agree, also take in the fact he knows nothing about politics, and will be at school while his father runs the party, only helping out on his days off and that.

Unlike other political fields of endeavor, he should be an “master” in the martial arts and furthermore, he would probably like to be a shotgun expert.

I don't dislike the board.
But what I heard about Benizar is that she may have been the lesser of two evils, but she was still evil. She embezzled money and hid it away and then when she went into hiding, she fled to the USA and preached democracy.
If nothing, she was a freaking genious.
