loosely inspired by Crusader's 'jokes' thread, i thought i might open up this one for those of you who like mind games.
every couple days or so (assuming theres enough interest in this thread), ill post a new brainteaser, riddle, or puzzle of some kind, as well as the solution to the previous one. if you have your own brian-benders that youd like to share, by all means, feel free. im always open to hearing some new ones. (hopefully thisll get enough interest so people do that before my own supply runs out..) the rules of the game, for challengers and players: 1) if theres more than one challenge going on at a time and someone has a question about one, remember to quote it to aviod any confusion. 2) perfect grammer, spelling, and capitolization will be used for anything in the 'riddles' catagory to avoid any confusion on what's a subtle hint, and what's a typo. the following only applies to the challenges that i post. if someone else feels like putting one up, they make their own rules. if they choose not to, mine remain in affect. 3) necessary hints for the riddles that arent part of the riddle itself will be placed in parentheses. 4) if you come up with the answer before i post it, color it black so it appears invisable to those who havent figured it out yet. durration is at my disgression. to avoid spoiling it for anyone who wants to keep working on it, i too, will color it black, so the only way to read it is by highlighting it. 5) after i post each one, you may ask only yes/no questions about them. ill make some exceptions on this rule, but try to keep it to that anyway. ill check this thread about once each day to try and keep up with answering them. 6) hints will be given at the request of several people. hints will not be given if several others contest those requests. so withough further adieu, the challenges: usualy itll be one at a time, but ill start with a few this time: puzzle- place 8 queens on a chess board in such a way that none of them are capable of attacking eachother from that spot using traditional chess movements. riddle- Put an olive in 'stine', mix it up, and get the equivalent of a fool's London subway. (the answer is something that can be found at home) brainteaser- a black dog stands in the middle of a dark road under a broken street lamp. a car with two broken headlighs approches the dog, but somehow turns to avoid him. how could the driver have seen the dog in time? i checked your answer to the chess puzzle. youre definately on the right track, but the bottom left, and top right one are still in line of eachother. got another one for ya: a farmer has three sons. to decide which of the three should become heir to the farm, he poses a challenge to them to find out which is wise enough to manage it. he tells them whomever can fill the barn the most, will inherit the farm. he gives them each a small amount of money with which to buy something to fill the barn. the oldest son goes to town and buys a bail of hay. he brings it back and dumps it out over the a small corner of the barn. the middle son goes to town and uses all the money on a bag of feathers. he brings it back, and it fills slightly more of the barn than the hay did. the youngest son goes to town and buys two small items. he brings them back and fills the entire barn, and becomes heir to the land. what were the items, and what did he fill the barn with? Tell me if i am right or not! My riddles: The answer is in black right after the riddle. Is it legal for a man to marry his widow's sister who lives on the east side of the Mississippi while the man lives on the west side? How can a man marry if he is dead? Think about it. A boy claims he can rush over to a lightswitch in his bedroom, flick the light off, and run back to his bed, and be in bed, asleep, even before the room actually gets dark. The bed and light are 50 feet apart. How can the boy accomplish this? Sunlight. I have two US coins that equal a total of $.55 (cents). One of the coins is not a nickel. What are the two coins? (This one has stumped MANY people...i dont know why ><) One is a half-dollar. The other is a nickel. A man and his son are driving down a freeway and get into a horrible car crash. THe father dies instantly. The son, barely alive, is rushed to a hospital nearby, off the freeway. In the hospital, the son's surgeon comes. The surgeon says "I cannot operate on him- he is my son!". Explain. The surgeon is the boy's mother.
