I swear it sounds like Kelly Clarkson in the beginning. If I heard it on the radio I would think it was her based on the first 2 lines.

I think I really LOVE 80% of the song. but the opening, where they try to blend her voice for "make up your mind". Very weird. Doesn't sound good IMO. Once the guitar kicks in it's absolutely fucking great.

I like the heavy piano in the background. Especially right in between the first and second verse, before "couldn't take the blame..."

The pre-bridge "you never call me when you're sober....", sounds like a Cheryl Crow song. Then the actual bridge "how could I...", while it's kind of our of the blue, which I found distracting at first, but now like, reminds me of "Fallen" evanescence.

I think this song will get alot of air play. Does anyone think there will be a "radio edit" of the song? Sometimes they do that to shorten it up.
What's in blue is exactly what I had been thinking when I first heard this song. I couldn't quite describe it.

Edit: in reference to what DhammaSeeker said below me.....
Some people aren't liking the change. But think....are you the same person you were 3-6 years ago. Or have you changed. Has your taste in music changed, grown over that period of time. I know that I have changed and that the type of music I listen to now isn't the same stuff I did years ago. As with Evanescence, i didn't expect the same thing as fallen or their earlier stuff, because they have evolved as a band. And each individual of the band has changed, grown up, has a life, been through some tough things. Those types of things influence your life and how you go about things in the future. Change is good. Welcome it You may not like this song, but don't down the album till you hear it in it's entirety.

Question

I wish I could get the people who are let down or disappointed by Call Me When You're Sober into a room and have you articulate what it is you were expecting or hoping for. Please comment on that in this thread if you're so inclined. I'm genuinely interested to hear what you have to say.

I'm no music expert, uber-aficionado, or snob, but I think it's a pretty good effort. I didn't have any expectations as to the next album, and in fact, some of the rumblings on the grape vine had me somewhat concerned (a hazard of the occupation I guess).

There's bound to be a shift in the Evanescence fan base with the release of The Open Door. The cross-section of the fan spectrum that is attracted to Fallen is so diverse that is can't be replicated exactly by The Open Door (without just rehashing the elements on Fallen). Some fans will fall away and they will be replaced with new fans attracted by something 'new' in the sound. That's okay. It's part of the evolution of the group and fan community.

Well I've been reading through many of the pages, and there's something I don't seem to understand. I'm interested to know why you guys think this is a more gothic, darker version of Evanescence? I personally don't see how this new direction is heavier than that of "Whisper", or "Going Under". It's still dark, but I don't see it as being nearly as dark as Fallen. Perhaps the rest of the album will be darker though. I am hoping for that.

I think this new song is great. I love how there's a bit of a fusion between rock and jazz in the beginning. Amy is so passionate, and I think you can really hear it in the song. It's beautifully crafted.

As for those of you who thought this sounded like Kelly Clarkson, I understand what you mean. Kelly has a certain style where she fuses high vocals and low vocals at the same time which creates a very unique sound to her. Amy did the same thing in the beginning, and I think that's how you're placing her vocals to Kelly's.

yes i have heard it, but i was talking more about the whole album ,not just this first single. I mean, i haven't heard the whole album yet...obviously...but like, we have heard 30 seconds of lacrymosa, and that was going in an awesome direction, and i trust Amy when she says that this album is going to be heavier and better than fallen.

There is only 1 thing that puts me down about the song. its that she goes stright into the song without like a little intro to it, but i love her voice i love how stronger it has changed and i carnt wait to hear the rest fo the album its gonna rock also i believe the rest of the guys dnt get enuff credit for the work they do there is more to evanescence then just amy lee its just a shame sum ppl dnt see it has that. i hope the other guys use there voicers for backing singing for other songs, that be gd to see like in other songs iv heard eg My Immortal ( band version ).

I can't speak for everyone, because I'm sure everyone has their own reasons for not liking the song. And I wasn't "disappointed" by the entire song, because some parts are great.

But the beginning threw me off guard. Like when writing a good book, you have to get your audience on the first few pages. With a song, you have to get your audience immediately. And until the guitar kicked in, I thought "what the hell is THIS". So, the first impression kind of tainted it, but I actually resisted posting my thoughts on the song when i first heard it and gave it about a dozen more listens. For me, it took a few tries for me to appreciate it for what it was.

And the pre-bridge and opening are the ONLY parts I don't like. it's just not a style of music I'm into. Although Amy's voice sounds amazing in both, I'm just no into bluesy-sounding music.

Hello fellow Ev fans! Gosh, I managed to get on at last! I registered a while ago and did a few posts and have only been glancing back here for updates for the past few months. Once I knew CMWYS was becoming heard by people I was desperately trying to get back on to talk about it, and sent many emails to get my login details because I'm ashamed to say I'd forgotten them. Anyway, I managed to get back and I'm going to post regularly now.

Before I talk about the song, thanks to Evboard for all the great updates. It was here I found the track listing for The Open Door a few weeks back, which was very exicting to see. Secondly, I liked the avatars that was made for the new video and used it in my avatar, I hope that's ok for the person who created them. If it's not let me know and I'll change it.

Even though I haven't been able to post I've read all of the pages here and every response. I'd like to agree with what was said before, some people aern't going to like it and I agree their opinions shouldn't be put down, because of course nor everybody is going to pleased. I, like many of you, have been waiting for the return of Evanescence for over a year, with the album release date being put back a lot, but now it's finally arriving and it's so exciting!

After seeing the official trailer, I was really excited. The music in that sounded amazing, and it just got me more excited about their new music. When I heard the trailer for CMWYS, to be honest, I was a bit worried.. I didn't like the sound of it. On first listen of the whole song, I thought it was okay, but not amazing. My heart was racing when I heard it the first time, I dont think I took it in properly.

On second listen, I loved it and it clicked for me. I agree that the her voice in the opening lines remind me of artists like Kelly Clarkson, but I don't really think it sounds that mainstream. In comparison to other songs by Evanescence, this definately sounds mainstream, but I still think this CMWYS has something special and different to other current mainstream songs.. might be my bias opinion. The intro was a little offputing for me, but as the piano progressed leading into the guitars I loved it. I love the use of strings in the background, in the second part of each verse.. when she sings "Can't keep believing, we're only decieving ourselves". It sounds like a jazzy/techno/metal sort of sound, and I absolutely love it. I think it sounds all over the place but flowing at the same time, and I love the use of piano before it goes into the second verse.

I can definately see how there has been a change, and I don't like change, it makes me weary, but the great thing for me is that I can still hear hints of Fallen in this song, so it's a slow progressive change that I'm quickly warming to (It's just how I see it). Although I think this is a great song, from what I've heard of Lacrymosa I prefer the sound of that. I'm hoping other tracks on the album will be dark and heavier than this track, because every track is different in it's own way, and from what I've heard of Lacrymosa I think that's where we'll find our more experimental and darker tracks, which I'm really looking forward to hearing.

The caps from the video look promising. The image I'm getting is the sort of image I associate with their music.. dark, forest type scene, and Amy is looking better than ever.

Sorry I've rambled, it's just I haven't been on here in so long and had so many things to say after reading various responses.

My first issue is this...

Quote:
The first single, "Call Me When You're Sober," has remnants of Evanescence's old goth sound, but with woman-scorned lyrics
Personally, I didn't hear one tiny bit of "Evanescence's old goth sound" at all in this single.
Another article quoted it as "one of the heaviest songs" on the album... and well, if this is one of the heaviest, I hope it's the LEAST heaviest of the heaviest because It wasn't exactly making me want to rock out to it.

My main issue with the song is that to me, it sounds like anything else I'd hear on the radio (which is a good thing for Ev, as a first single, especially for a band that's been out of commission for so freaking long). It struck no emotional chord in me... I can relate to it, yes, as I'm sure almost everyone can, but I don't feel a connection with the song. So I guess all in all to me, it just sounds like any other thing I'd hear on radio and dissapointed me as I expected something to break the mold. (Though, as an above poster mentioned, perhaps some of us were expecting TOO much...)
Though, I still hold out on Amy's word that each song has a life of it's own, and I hope that at least half of these songs will side opposite of 'Call Me When You're Sober'.

((The song has been growing on me the more I listen to it, and I can never seem to get the damned thing out of my head, so they obviously did something right in terms of sticking this in people's heads when it hits radio.))

I do admit, this song is the perfect marketing tool, though.

i absolutely love it, to be honest i don't hear that old goth sound you're talking about, it sounds different, i think that amy is trusting more and more on that amazing voice of hers, i just can't wait to hear the rest of the album... love that giggle and the end...
