Listen to McNair because he's serious

By Phil Simms
Special to NFL.com

(Nov. 30, 2004) -- After Tennessee lost to Houston last week, Titans quarterback Steve McNair made headlines by hinting that this might be his last season playing in the NFL. Many observers have chalked up McNair's comments to frustration over a disappointing season. But to hear him talk the way he is, I think it's real. I think McNair is starting to seriously ponder that decision.

Field Pass

Listen LIVE to NFL games, plus watch video news and features of your favorite team.

I started thinking about McNair in this light a couple of years ago. He just takes so many hits and has suffered a lot of little nagging injuries. Nagging injuries always lead to bigger problems. They wear you out both physically and mentally. Emotionally, it's always hard just fighting to get onto the field.

In his 10 NFL seasons, McNair has always played hard -- and he plays such a physical game that the end probably will hit him pretty quick. He's the opposite of a Brett Favre, who really doesn't take a lot of hits. I watched the Monday night game against St. Louis, and I don't recall seeing Favre hit the ground all night.

On the other hand, if McNair goes the first quarter without getting hit, then he'll have to run into somebody just to get going again. I'd compare him to a running back that prefers to deliver the blows, who fights for the extra yard and stays in bounds all the time. Problem is, those players hit a wall a little earlier in their careers than others because of their style of play.

As a quarterback, there always comes a time when you say, "Okay, I just don't want to get hit anymore." And when your style of play has been the opposite of that for so long, I don't know if you can be successful by trying a different style of play.

Would McNair have said what he did if the Titans were winning? Maybe not. But regardless of the record, the pain remains the same. This hasn't just come about because they've lost a few games of late. This has been developing for a while.

i dont want to see him go.. but i think he has enough money and his wife is a nurse pluse he is never 100% anymore..*cries a river*

He's been out part of the season with a bruise sternum, or something around that area. It's a hard injury to cure, even more with a physical player like he is. It would be sad if he leaves, but the Titans aren't going anywhere now. A change might be a good thing.

They've been building around Mcnair for a few years now and never got far into the playoff. Well at least they never won the Super Bowl. I doubt the fans will be happy with a few more years of rebuilding.

I really don't know why they did that, maybe his contract was coming to an end and they didn't want to give him a raise.

Your sig isn't working because HTML is turn OFF in sig. Just use the standard [url] and [IMG] tag
