I don't think anyone here could justify, which FF was the best. It's all opinion.
Okay okay, everyone loves 7, so I won't get into that argument. BUT! 9? URg... I can't stand you bastards who loved 9. In my opinion, 9 was the worst of the playstation ones. I'm a girl, and I didn't think it was cute. It was fucking annoying. How old were they in that game? Zidane and Dagger? 12. Eiko? 8. Zidane was too cocky and annoying. Steiner was wearing eye makeup! I know it! But Vivi, was the shitz, black mages rock. Freya was okay, and the rest were unimportant enough not to remember. The game was entirely too easy, and I can't remember much of it (I remember catching the frogs with Quina). The ending was so disapointing after playing 8, which had a 5 minute movie scene at the end. I mean, a 2 minute movie scene... of Daggar running downstairs. WOW! EXCITING! [/sarcasm] ... They had the use of cool graphics, and didn't do much with it. I mean, FF8 had that awesome fight with Seifer and Squall. 9 had scenes of Dagger flying away in an airship, and her cutting her hair. WOW! [/sarcasm] All the charachters in 9 were kinda wimpy. I think what I liked about all the FF games, was the aspect of each main charachter. But when they put someone as naive and young in the position of leader (Zidane) of a gang of people to fight and save the world, I couldn't find it believable. I couldn't immense myself in a story, led by someone I was more mature than. Note: I don't know their actual age (does anyone) for fact. But by height, looks, and the way they act, they can't be more than 14. I couldn't look at any of the charachter in 9 and say, 'this is someone I would follow. This is someone I could fight with.' Each Final Fantasy game had such a variety of colorful charachters that were good at certain things. Their different charachter strenghts would mesh together to make a team. FF7 for example. You had a leader, you had fighters, you had the smart intellectual ones, you had someone who had good morals and was all around a good/nice person, you had the slightly cocky/funny charachters, you had the dark mysterious one, you had a sweet girly charachter, etc etc. But in 9, you just kinda get these random clueless charachters. I just couldn't see the strengths in each charachter. For me, I have to be able to relate to these people in some fraction of a way, or actually believe these people are capable of saving the world. Nine, was the one Final Fantasy I couldn't pull myself into, and get into the story and charachters. WOW! I babble, and I don't think I made much sense at aLL! Blah... |

I haven't played any video games in a LONG while since I've lost intrest in alot of video games but I'm going to do this from memory.
I would have to say that my favorites were FF6 and FF7. 6 having to be the best FF game, ever. Almost all of the charachters had their own back story. The intresting job system. I Loved the Esper System. I thought this game was amazing. and yet I've never been able to beat it. FF7 was great too. The charachter Delevopment wasn't as deep ass FF6 but I still loved the charachters. The Story was GREAT. The materia system frustrated me at times but I thought it was pretty good. My two least favorite FF's would have to be 8 and 10. FF8. I could not stand that game, IMO worst game ever. The Junction system confused the hell out of me. The charachter development was horrible. There's basically only back story for 2 of them. The rest you basically knew their name and that was it (note I'm exagerating). The story line was horrible too. Maybe I just didn't really get into it but I thought it was just too weird for me. It did have some cool mini games and summons but for me.. that was the highlight of it. FF10 I was a bit disappointed. The game never really did it for me. And it was riddicoulously easyI hated how you had all the charachters with you at all times and could switch during battle. The challenge of the other games was making do with the charachters you had. The sphere grid was a great idea, but I didn't really like it that much. I liked the whole level up thing and gain new abilities as you go but that's just me. 10 after reaching a certain point in the game all your characters would be the same minus their special abilities. And The Story line.. I thought the storyline was just sort of meh. Like 8 didn't do a whole lot for me. I guess it's because I never really got into it but blah. |

i disagree about 8. i spent a while learning the junction system and i actually got to the point where i understood and enjoyed it very well. if you do all of the sidequests and play through with different teams, you learn the backstory and personality of all the characters.
i really liked and connected with eight and i liked the way it was set up. i think the reason a lot of people dont like it is because following up seven with something better is like trying to make a zelda game better than OoT. the end. |

Yeah, 8 did kinda take a while to get into the story. First time I tried to play thru it, I got stuck on Sorceress Adel because I was like about lvl 54 or so when I got to her, so I couldn't beat her. Next time I got to her, I had squall at lvl 100, selphie at level 84 and Zell at level 85, and I stomped the hell outta her. I wasn't really into the story the first time I played it, but I liked the gameplay of it, so I started again and really got into it.
I was a master of the junctioning system. When I got to Tiamat in Ultimacia's castle, I had 100 firaga's equipped for the elemental defense, so when I fought her, her "DARK FLARE" GAVE me 8,500 life. I fucked that game all up. Loved it to death, and yes, my copy has died. |

eventually ill go back and try to finish ff8...it was just too hard in my opinion.
I mean the enemies leveled up with you, so to me it kind of made leveling up your character pointless. That and drawing your magic from enemies and the junction system made things a little more difficult than i liked. And then there is the bosses. Its just not right when the third boss in the game keeps kicking your ass over and over. And im no rookie to rpg's either. However, ff8 does have the best graphics of any final fantasy game, and one of the bests overall in that department still.

Hmm... pretty much all of the reasons Squirrel listed for hating IX is why I loved the game. Sure, the charactor designs weren't the prettiest thing out there, especially when compared to VIII, but there's more to a game than how it looks. (Again, I point to VIII) Generally, I think Final Fantasy is a pretty lame and over-rated series. Mainly this is due to their habit of recycling the same charactors with new looks and maybe a little twist (Cloud/Squall, Yuffie/Selphie/Rikku), and I prefer the more traditional, medieval setting for a role play game. IX was like a breath of fresh air, a nostalgic trip back to how RPGs used to be. Charactors were super deformed, it was in a medieval setting, gone are the boring and grumpy lead charactors replaced with someone actually cheerful (yay!)... it was different and that's why I liked it.
When it comes to FFVIII... the game looked great, and I loved the battle system. The story was mediocre when compared to other RPGs, but it wasn't bad. I'd probably have enjoyed the game if I didn't make it to the end of the third disc and get stuck with no way out, followed by the deletion of my save. -_-* |
