Flyleaf Aren't Evanescence, And Boys Smell
Wednesday June 28, 2006 @ 06:30 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

Flyleaf might be a hard rock band fronted by a woman, but singer Lacey Mosley says the comparisons to Amy Lee's band should stop right there.

"We get a lot of comparisons to Evanescence and stuff like that. I think that's just because it's rare right now to have a female-fronted, heavy, darker rock band. As far as the musical sound, I think we're a lot different."

The Belton, Texas quintet — which also includes guitarists Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann, bassist Pat Seals and drummer James Culpepper — formed in 2000.

"We've been together, all of us, since we've been playing in James' garage," says Mosley. "We still play in James' garage, actually."

An element that sets Flyleaf apart from other heavy rock bands is their infusion of hopeful lyrics into their dark music. "That's one of our goals, to bring hope to the front of suffering, despair and all that stuff that heavy rock songs are usually about," Mosley says.

Mosley finds inspiration for her lyrics through her experiences and faith. "I used to be an obnoxious atheist," she says.

"When I was about 16, I planned on killing myself that day that everything changed for me. And there was a miraculous sequence of events that happened to me, and then I knew that there was a God.

"I didn't really know if it was Christianity or not, so I studied it for myself to find out what Christianity is all about. The pieces totally fit together with the miraculous experience I had. And then I understood that my faith tells me that I'm created for a reason and that there's a reason for me wakin' up every day, and it's not about myself. It's just about the fact that I have some sort of purpose, and hopefully my story will help other people."

Mosley grew up listening to grunge rock bands like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam, and she's influenced by their raw and honest sound.

"I think the most important thing in music to me is that it's honest," she says. "It is what it is, and people liking it is a by-product of doing what you love."

Honesty is also carried into Flyleaf's music. "We're honest and we're not ashamed of who we are," says Mosley.

"If our music has to do with love and grace, which is pretty much what our faith is about, healing and being saved from abusing yourself… we hope that it comes to the front, because I think everyone deals with it.

"And if we're going to write a song, we don't want to waste the moment on something that is not life and death because there are so many kids out there that are asking those questions."

Aside from P.O.D., U2 and Coldplay's most recent albums, Mosley is listening to old jazz music. "If you don't grow up listening to jazz, when you hear it, it's so unpredictable," she says.

"It's almost a new way of thinking. And as a vocalist, when you write melodies, you need to know those different ways to put notes together. It's really opening doors."

Flyleaf are busy touring North America and gearing up for the Family Values Tour later this summer, including an August 28 stop at Toronto's Molson Amphitheatre. While Mosley can't wait for a day off, she says the hectic schedules aren't the worst thing about touring — it's being on a tour bus full of guys. Although there are several females on the road with the band, including Mosley's best friend who does her hair and makeup, the singer says that it's still hard dealing with the male stench.

"I think the worst part about being with boys is really and truly the smell," Mosley confesses.

There was a really convoluted interview with Flyleaf done for the new Guitar World magazine, and what the band has to say about it can be seen here in their Myspace blog.

I'm not sure that Joe Bosso heard us correctly during this interview, or maybe we said something to make him angry. If we were offensive to you is some way, Joe, we're sorry. I just want to make some things clear that might have been confused.

About our history. Jared and I did meet in our Christian youth group. However we didn't, "Within minutes.." stop discussing the Bible and begin discussing guitars. How could we? We didn't even know how to play guitar. We were 12 and 13 years old and just played video games together with some other friends. I, Sameer, didn't even purchase a guitar until I was 14. What's more! I never said, "our fate was sealed: we would form a band". Though we did form a band when I was 17 and Jared was 16, it ended just after a year because we starting college and other things by then.

"And their Gospel is spreading to Regular Joe heathens, too.." Regular Joe heathens? Our music is for all of us. We all need to hear a message of Hope in all the hopelessness we see and experience every day.

About Jared's quote in paragraph three, "God loves the sound of loud, crunchy guitars. Otherwise, He wouldn't have let man invent them." Jared never said such things. If God was pleased with all that man invented we're in trouble. Man has made some evil inventions throughout history. Just watch the news and read the histories of wars and civilizations. This quote is not Jared and doesn't reflect his charactrer or personality which is much more tasteful than what was printed here. Not one quote in this interview was correct.

Mr. Bosso went on to address how many bands "..make secret of their faith, to disguise their purposes, lest they alienate secular music fans." According to Joe Bosso, Jared and I "dismiss this practice as weak", while I supposedly asserted, "Most of those bands suck, anyway. I'm Christian and proud of it!" How terrible! How could I say "most of those bands suck, anyway" and say I'm proud of anything. If I ever said such things I should be ashamed. We never said any of this! I believe bands have different reasons for not being seemingly straight forward with their faith. It could be that they are being totally open with their faith, but the rest of us are too dense and jugdemental to see it! Who knows? I heard it takes a genius to recognize a genius. That applies to art and music as it does to math, science, literature and a number of other things. Not all of us will understand what someone else is trying to express, and that's ok. We do not believe that it is "weak" by any means.

We were referred to us as "angels of goodwill". We are not angels at all. We are screwed up people like everyone else who love and listen to the Deftones, Korn, Pantera, and all else that rocks. Not just musically, but lyriclly as well. There is a perceptible honesty and grasp of how real life can be in their lyrics, whether it's frustrating, angry, intimate, loving, or whatever. Though we may not agree with all of there views, we all deal with the same temptations.

I've written all of this to say that we believe words were put into our mouths and a false perception of who we are and what we stand for was fabricated. I apologize to anyone who was offended by our Guitar World interview.

Fully Alive video article

Flyleaf Aren't Diva Rockers Yet — They Love Making Videos

Singer for Family Values Tour band gets her own statue in group's second clip.

by Corey Moss

After shooting their second video last week, Flyleaf would like to officially debunk a rock-world myth.

"Everyone says videos are not fun to do, but ours are always fun," bassist Pat Seals said. "Maybe we're privileged."

Or maybe the band's just been lucky enough to find the right chemistry with a director right off the bat. Flyleaf have, after all, shot both of their videos — for "I'm So Sick" and the upcoming second single "Fully Alive" — with the Brothers Strause, the team behind Linkin Park's "Crawling" and Nickelback's "How You Remind Me."

"Most definitely," Seals confirmed. "Everyone on that crew is just really, really cool."

In following up "I'm So Sick," the Brothers Strause wanted to show Flyleaf in another elaborate setting — or "create iconic imagery to match the song's message of rebirth and rejuvenation," as they wrote in their treatment — but tell more of a story this time.

"The band is playing in this garden-type place, and there's a statue set up of [Flyleaf singer] Lacey [Mosley]," Seals explained. "And as the video progresses, the statue kind of crumbles, and Lacey climbs her way into where the rest of us are playing and eventually replaces herself as the statue and comes to life, so to speak. It's like a metaphor for what the song is about."

"Fully Alive," which Flyleaf wrote in an hour — "It wasn't a toiling song," Seals said — is inspired by former Trust Company singer Kevin Palmer's wife, Layla, who is now in the band Amity Lane with Kevin.

"She was faced with something pretty adverse, and she still found strength to be happy and be uplifted and full of life in the face of that," Seals said, choosing not to elaborate. "It was just a really powerful thing. I guess, kind of through that, the statement of the song is just enjoy what you have. You know, don't take it for granted. And be thankful for just being alive."

That's not much of a challenge for Flyleaf at the moment, considering the band's been riding high since "I'm So Sick" took off (see "Flyleaf Embrace Family Values, P.O.D.'s Christian Mantra"). Now the group is about to leave for the Family Values Tour (see "Korn Resurrect Family Values Tour With Deftones, Stone Sour").

"Deftones are probably my favorite band, so I'm very stoked," Seals said. "We all have a lot of respect for the bands that are going to be there, and it's going to be the biggest thing that we've been a part of. ... We'll be a little bit more out of our element, but I think it's gonna be really good. It's gonna be a chance to hopefully make some new fans."

Flyleaf will likely keep touring through the rest of the year, but they're already starting to write songs for their next record.

"It's pretty sporadic, but we've been fortunate these past couple of months to actually write some more songs," Seals said. "We got about three songs finished. We don't have 'em in the set quite yet, but we're not totally blinding ourselves to the next record. I think now, when it's not, like, a demand time, we're trying to get into really creative ideas. And when it is time to pay the piper, we won't be empty-handed."

Wee! News on Fully Alive. Hopefully that thing gets released soon.

In other news, Flyleaf did an acoustic set for Rolling Stone. The videos can be streamed here or downloaded in non-realplayer format here.

You can purchase the audio from that set here and I think you can download the interview for free if you sign up.

Is there any other way I'd be likely to get the audio for the Flyleaf stuff, seeing as I can't get Real Rhapsody, and am in the UK

p.s. Flyleaf Online's new layout is HOT! (it's new to me, I've not been on in a while). Beautifully designed.
