How is the vocal performance now?

Hello everybody,

When I have time to kill I sometimes read old threads, especially those written in 2007 (the Year of the Drama, as I like to call it). (It is funny, btw xD ) Among them is the following one:

http://www.evboard.com/amys-performance-36272.html

Now it is clear that Amy hasn’t wrecked her voice like many people in this thread were afraid she would. But has she improved vocally? Before the new album came out I thought so based on the Legends & Lyrics snippets and the videos of the NYC concert in 2009. At Rock in Rio, however, she seemed to struggle and the performance was not as flawless as I had expected. So I’d like to ask you guys’ opinion: do you think Amy’s singing still has the flaws it used to have or do you think her technique has actually improved and at RiR she was just having a bad day?

I think she has gotten better, I just think she really pushed herself vocally on this album. The vocals she wrote have some notes that are quite hard for her to hit every time.

Notice that when she sings the old songs, she does well. It's only the new ones she really struggles with.

I'm not quite sure about this question... I think she quite remained the same.. but you are right, TheSignSaysLeave, the songs of the new album seem to be harder for her.. especially at the beginning of the tour (e.g. Rock in Rio).
If you compare her performance of MHIB then with it now, there are huge differences (especially in this song, I think). Although I have to admit that they sometimes play it in a lower key now.
Besides, I think that she likes My Immortal better now.. at least the performances sound like that (if you compare to 2007).

Could it be that she just hasn't yet learned them perfectly? I know little about singing, but with the piano it is pretty normal to struggle with pieces you have just learned, your hands aren't used to the movements required by it yet.

I noticed that at the beginning of the ToD tour people would say pretty much the same: that she struggled with the new songs. Now the then new songs have become old and she has apparently mastered them but has problems singing those that are new now.

I remember the first time I heard Amy live. It was awful. Like really, really, really, really awful. Evanescence was the first band I really listened to and it was such a shock to hear the massive differences between in studio and out. Naive of me I know but cut me some slack I was like 12. Acoustic live versions usually sounded much better, I figure Amy doesn't do so well running around and singing.

I dunno how well she does now and I don't care, I'm happy with the in studio one.

I think she's actually improved over-all, but I don't doubt her voice gets strained too. I mean, just look at the extensive touring she's been doing and is set to do. Any performer, no matter how seasoned or trained, would start to show signs of wear after such a long time.
But when she's more rested, her live performances are better quality, I think. It could just be the new writing, but it seems like it's easier for her to replicate what is on the album for live shows. Like, she's more able to hit all the notes and stuff . . .

That's just my opinion.

Haha. I actually think their recent RIR performance was one of the best broadcasted show they've had recently. Yeah, her voice got more strained by the end of it but all in all she did a much better job than she usually does. I was surprised when she sang new songs so well (Sick is one of the examples.) She used to sing worse during the TOD era, so I really think she's improved considering their crazy schedule. I'm surprised she still can sing.
