Hurricane Gustav

This hurricane is hitting the impoverished nation of Haiti this afternoon, with winds up to 90 mph. But, this storm is forecast to enter the Gulf of Mexico later, and the very warm waters will cause it to grow into a category 3, 4 or even a 5. And, It's path also shows it might threaten New Orleans later on. Article. Projected path by The Weather Channel.

Price of oil went up $5 a barrel today, and gas prices might go up about 10 cents by Labor day.

Wow. How does this turn of events make you feel?

Wait... do you mean the hurricane or the fact that oil went up? Because lately the price per barrel actually fell several dollars (it was a bit more than $5)... even those gas prices didn't drop. No surprise though that it's starting to go back up to where it was for the holiday.

And... hurricanes happen every year? I hope New Orleans doesn't get hit by this... they seriously should have a ten year free pass from hurricanes after Katrina.

I mean all of it. Oil went up $5 on the mere threat of hurricane disruptions today. Might skyrocket here in a bit when the disruptions are actually happening, like in Katrina, Rita and Wilma. And will New Orleans look like Haiti or another third world country again? Hopefully people can get out of harm's way in time (and the busses can be staged away from a flood prone area).

Yep. Those speculators in Switzerland love to play havoc with the stock market, and this is as good as an excuse as any.

Katrina was supposedly a 500-year event storm for New Orleans. What are the odds of two 500-year storms hitting the same area 3 years apart? We'll see if those odds come into reality sometime early next week.

I wish we could use atom bombs on hurricanes and get rid of them that way. BOOM!

I would be absolutely horrified, to live where there are hurricanes
happening every so often. O.O
I am very greatful to where I live, where we don't get very many storms
or any such things even close to that.
My family lives in Florida, and has already been through, and surrvived
a few huricanes, and their home hardly got touched.
Miles.....if only that were possible, to blow them out off the planet, so they
would never come back.
I get the news, and whenever there has been one, I start crying, because
of all those people, and children who died because of one.
After Katrina happened, I donated alot of money in huge support of
all the people, and animals......VERY PROUD SUPPORTER!!!

Gustav has forced New Orleans and Louisiana to declare a state of emergency. I sincerely hope people don't take that to mean stocking up on HDTVs and Beer like last time. They better make a run out of town while there's still a bridge and levee. Good luck and God's speed, people of New Orleans.

Well I hope it doesn't hit New Orleans again, those people seriously need a brake. Luckily I live in SA where there are no earthquakes floods [ very rarely ] hurricanes, tornadoes [ very rarely, never very serious ] or volcanoes.

Maybe you all should come live here, you know if you people can survive the wanton crime, and by that I mean if you can survive from the plane to a taxi

But seriously best of luck to you all, and pity for those who lost friends and family.

It came ashore today as a strong category 2 or weak category 3 at landfall.

Guess this isn't a repeat of katrina, who was a strong category 3 or weak category 4 at landfall.
