laptop S-Video output.. and input?

my computer has an s-video output which ive used many times. recently my uncle came over and happened to mention that "its not a one way street", and the connection might be capable of video input as well. "cable ready" i think he caled it. i tried hooking it up as such, but nothing happened. since i didnt really know what i was doing, i decided to unplug it for fear of burning something out. so i didnt give myself enough time to really mess with the software side of the issue.
i have an HP pavilion laptop running win XP and a Radion graphics card, if that means anything to you. can anyone give me sone advice on how to get this working, or to at least find out if its possable?

Many video cards, including several I've had, have had S-video outputs, but that definitely doesn't mean it's an input. If your video isn't labeled as a tv input, then I can almost guarantee you that it's only for displaying the screen on a tv or something similar.

both my laptop and desktop have TV out, which allows you to hook up to the tv to play videos and such. There is a way to reverse the process, but I have yet to figure it out. I think you need a specific INPUT device to do it. It is not something that all the computers come with, it is not standard.

one thing i do know about this stuff is the only way to really damage anything is by conneting two outputs together, which is probably what i was doing. my uncle said in some cases the software will detect the input and make the appropriate change. but without the correct hardware i might burn it out.
so thanks for the feedback everyone. youve convinced me to hold off on doing any more tests.

Mine doesn't have one of those... I really only have 2 USB inputs, a mic and headphones input and a pink and blue pin inputs that I have no idea what they are for. I wish I could export the videos I make onto my computer, as I want to be a video editor myself... and I create and make movies all the time... but unfortunetly I have never been able to connect my camera to my computer... so nothing is original.

Some of the Radeons came out with VIVO (video in video out), which would allow you to capture video. To be sure, what's the flippin' model number?

If you can fit an S-Video plug into the socket for use with the TV, then no, your Radeon card doesn't have it. The VIVO plugs look a lot like S-Video, but they've got about double the pins inside.

Tell your uncle to lay off the crack.

The world needs to break away from S-Video anyway. It simply sucks

Let’s progress to something that does not produce noticeable color separation on screens.

S-Video doesn't do audio. If that videocard was an All In Wonder(video in capable) you should have a little purple box that let you connect RCA cables and S-Video. If you only have one S-Video plug, it's an OUT.
