You know what I think would help you? Perhaps you draw a bit backward. By this I mean some artists tend to work generally and then focus on the specifics. You, on the other hand, seem to draw and focus a lot on the detail and work your way into the general picture. There's nothing wrong with doing it either way, if it works for you, but I think when you start out with the details (as I've learned, I myself tend to do)... you need to make sure to keep the general picture in your mind.

It appears as if you either press really hard when you draw... or you just work on one area at a time. When I first looked at the picture, I could see what you mean about it not looking too good yet... it's a bit too dark and too cartoony. To avoid this you could either use a lighter pencil, or just try and draw lighter yourself. If you can't avoid pressing hard, you might want to try a different thickness in the lead until you find something that will compensate for your pressure.

I also think that making your drawings a bit lighter will take away the harshness and make them look more realistic.

If you're forced to do pieces of your picture in lighter and lighter shades, as you move into the more general picture you'll notice that it will be much easier for you to go back and adjust certain features so that they go well together. Good luck with the drawing and I hope that bit of advice helps.
