If you can, get hold of the CD or video of the stage version. It's AMAZING, seen it twice in London and my school did it. The story might be slightly different but it'll give you the kind of feeling and an idea of the times and emotions they felt.

el_cid has a spectacular aura aboutel_cid has a spectacular aura about
IMHO Les Miserables is the pinnacle of musical theater and, when performed well, can be a deeply moving, emotional experience. if you can get a hold of one of the theater recordings, do so. Otherwise you might want to consider buying a used cd off of amazon.com and listening through it to get an idea of what the story is like. I haven't read the book yet but ive seen it performed numerous times by different acting companies. its stellar. I havent read the book yet, but, unfortunately, ive heard that the book isnt nearly as good as the performance. Still, with a production like Les Mis, even being able to hold a candle to it is quite an artistic accomplishment. Happy reading!

mrslovett will become famous soon enough
Thumbs up

i absolutely LOVE the book - but then i love victor hugo in all his hugoness.
the first time i read it i was a bit to young i think, i skipped over a lot that i realise now was really awesome stuff. i've read it twice since.

the point being, if you really aren't enjoying the writing you can still get the main bits of the plot, if not all the intricacies. and in my experiece that's all a high school english class ever asks for, which is sad but that's an entirely different rant. (hmm maybe i'll go post a thread in whine n cheese)

and if you really get into it, it's an AWESOME novel.
