I mean... does someone start off with higher reps in order to spread it to a few people, who in turn spread it a bit? And therefore there's like a heirarchy of a few people who get some rep at the start or something?

I wondered that since the reset of the rep.
When the reputation levels were reset, everyone started off with 10 points. That was enough to get things going. Slowly but steadily, the more people repped others, the numbers increased.

Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Why my mind didn't even comprehend thinking about this little detail is due in its entirety to my lack of sleep. Whoops. Thanks for clearning that up anyway

Everyone was reset to a reputation of 10, *but* if the box is grey or not is not based solely on reputation. It is based on reputation power and because of the other factors that influence reputation power (number of posts, length of membership, being an admin/mod/ps) quite a few people started out with enough reputation power to give red and green dots.

So... people who:
  • have a higher rep
  • have more posts
  • are a p/s or a mod or an admin
  • and have been members for longer
have power over the new members? I always just assumed it was only reputation power that made you a bit more "powerful" with the rep system. I didn't know there were other factors involved there. I'm not really surprised though.

Have power over the new members? Not quite. Rep, post count, being a PS and length of membership do not give power over anything. Granted it gives the people more *rep power* but I don't equate that to power over another user. Yes an individual can influence another individual's reputation but the degree to which one user can effect another's reputation isn't that significant. Negative rep's only do half of a user's rep power and when you combine that with the requirement of having to spread rep around before repping the same person again and the limit on number of reps per day it would take a good amount of effort to abuse that power to make a significant effect. And doing so would leave a trail and the person it happens to would probably be bitching their heads off about it (there are enough people that get bent out of shape over one neg rep, I can't imagine a user ignoring repeated neg reps) that it would be found out and rectified rather quickly. I periodically look through the reputation comments and look for anyone giving out neg reps under dubious circumstances.

Oh whoops, I meant that only with reference to the rep system, not the rest of the board and its aspects.

Is it likely that the rep system will eventually get back to how it was before the crash?
