Actually, I just became a PS a few days ago and only recently have started seeing who's repped me, and everyone has left comments.

Okay, thank you. I had been wondering about that.

I think that was mainly the reason why ToB did it, to refrain people from posting anything anywhere just to get out of the mod queue. It's a great idea, it'll probably make people post only when they really feel like they should, making the board a better place to be. And the rep points are there to show that what matters is quality, not quantity.

xxlostforyou7xx will become famous soon enough
After reading this thread, I finally understand. I think it's a good idea, although it does seem a little annoying at first. That's good though, because it weeds out all the crap.

I have a question...

ToB, or any of you mod-types... would it be possible to turn off the rep system for one of the forums, specifically the debate forum?

It is kind of counterproductive; I mean, the whole point of a debate forum is to encourage people to post conflicting opinions on a subject. Being able to blindly give someone neg reps is a strong deterrant to people posting there. If someone doesn't agree with you, they don't have to post their opinion, they can just gig you. It defeats an adversarial system if you have to worry about people flinging rotten tomatoes from the sidelines.

Just my opinion though.

I think you can disable your reps in your user cp?

I can't say I'm sure though.

You are able to disable the display of the reputation in your post bits (), but you're still subject to receiving reputation comments.

I'm not a mod or anything close, but I don't see that as being very necessary. People are not going to negatively rep you simply for having a different opinion, they MAY negatively rep you if you say something that could be harmful to other people that might read it, or if you are abusing your sources, or posting irrelevant information, not backing up your opinion with fact - just plain out actions that go against rules spelled out in the FAQ.

If there are still people that are negatively repping you for having a different opinion (only), then just don't worry about it. If it becomes excessive you can let a moderator know, because I'm sure that would cross into being harassment, but I hardly think it would get to that kind of level. Besides, I don't believe negative reps do much harm to your reputation, unless you get a shit load of them from different people (and if you do, then chances are you probably are screwing up). So if you get one or two from some ignorant asshole, because you posted a countering opinion in the debate forum, just brush it off... it's no big deal.

And as Dhamma and someone else said, you can disable your rep so that others can't see them, by going to your User CP and choosing to disable them. I think that you'll still receive reps and such, it'll just prevent others from seeing your rep status (i.e. those little green/red dots under your name).

End.
