I'm not saying this is a bad film. I'm just saying this is not remotely a film that will exhibit Japanese charachters/culture. But then again, determining if it is a good movie has nothing to do with how faithful or authentic it is to the original context. I'm not attacking the film, and saying it is going to be a bad film. I'm attacking its credibility as having any resemblance to Japanese culture/charachters. Could it be a good film without any substance of exhibiting the Japense? Yes. A good film is plot, acting, directing, etc not... oh well the kimonos aren't authentically accurate, this is a bad film. No. It's just not very good at showing the realities of the Japanese. Of course geishas marry. I've read loads of books about them. And besides, not all geishas have sex with their clients. It's a Western misconception that we have about them. Only the lower class geisha do that if they're desperate but then they get landed by that taint against their character. They're most susceptible when they're still in the maiko stage.
They do get sponsership from some clients, but it is not payment for sex of anything like that. Has anyone read "Geisha of Gion" by Mineko Iwasaki? It's rather hands-off but it is still very clear about the culture of the geisha. I also know Japanese people who get annoyed when people assume that geisha sleep with their clients. Some may, but it's clear that it differs from area to area if it happens at all. Anyway... Zhang Ziyi, due to all the makeup that geisha have to wear anyway, I don't think that the fact she is Chinese will make a huge amount of difference with the concern about her ethnicity. She's a good enough actress to pull it off in my opinion, and although the problem with the actual speaking Japanese is bothering me (I hate how Hollywood change the language of the films to suit the audience, if it's in a different language, then it should have subtitles and no dubbing. I for one am one of those who watches a foreign film in its respective language rather than the dubbed version, especially if the accent of the dubbing is profoundly different than the original language). I'll probably see this film when it comes out, because I'm interested to see what it turns out like. However, I would much rather watch a Japanese film about geisha than a Hollywood one because I think it would be more authentic without the Western misconceptions already mentioned in this thread. amy

Well, we may think that a Japanese language film isn't an issue, but many people I know would never pay to see a film that had subtitles. Sadly, that's not a mainstream concept.
As an amateur film maker I can tell you how important an audience is. .A story will be equally beautiful in any language, so they pick what will help them break even. |

Memoirs of a Geisha: The Movie
In Italy is coming out in 8 days, and i'm so excited about it,because the book(same title as the movie) is amazing, wonderful!
Have u ever read the book?Do u think u r going to see the movie? The only thing that i didn't like was that the only japanese actor is Ken Watanabe, but Zhang Ziyi(as Sayuri Nitta) and Gong Li (Hatsumomo,Sayuri's enemy) are sooo cute and wonderful! |
