haha me too! I was planning on going to watch it this saturday, but it's been a few days after it has been released and it's still not showing in the theatre near my place to which I bought a discount ticket of. At this rate, it looks like I won't be seeing it in quite awhile =_=. *sniff* ah well. *crosses fingers*

My mother and I are now officially planning to see 'Memoirs of a Geisha' on New Year's Eve. Our family has a tradition of going to the movies every December 31st, so my dad and my younger brother want to see 'King Kong' then.

Last year, Mom and I watched 'Spanglish' on New Year's Eve. Didn't really care for that movie. But this year's choice is going to be much better than last year's. I can already feel it.

I don't know about everyone else, but I really enjoyed this movie. I didn't hear as much about it as everyone in this thread seems to have heard so I was quite surprised to read all of this. I was wondering whether or not a few of the actresses were Chinese (throughout the film). Kind of struck a nerve in me and for a bit I was puzzling myself thinking if they were Chinese (just by their accents and facial features).

However, I didn't worry over that much. Didn't really bother me, because the movie was well done. I could feel a bit of tension go through the theater when the movie began due to the Japanese-without-subtitles beginning. I felt as if a lot of people were freaking out thinking, Shit... I hope this whole thing isn't in Japanese. I was thinking, Oh sweet, maybe this whole thing is in Japanese! lol... it wasn't (obviously), but no big deal.

Beautiful movie. I'd wished for a better look at all the kimono. And oh my God, the dancing, the gestures, everything was so well done! The actors and actresses did a wonderful job. The culture was captured very nicely, in my opinion.

This movie did remind me a bit of the recent Harry Potter movie. It was a great movie, and you didn't necessarily have to read the book to follow it and enjoy it; however, I do think a couple things may have been easily overlooked/misunderstood had you not read the book. Not really that big of a deal... and I did admire the way they were able to chop down the book and make it into a suitable movie. (I kept trying to guess ahead of time what they would do... it was a very fast-paced beginning! Similar to that of the Harry Potter film - I mean they wasted no time in jumping right in and getting their hands dirty, huh?)

The near-ending after Nobu came for Sayuri up to the part where Pumpkin tried to foil things was a little bit bumpy for my tastes... but the movie itself was great... and as captivating as ever. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.

End.

I am SO SORRY if someone else posted it, but I only had time to read the first page. But what rating is it? Because I want to see the movie this weekend, but if it's R than I might not be able to. Sorry if it's been asked!

Well kiddo, you're totally in luck (I think) - it's only PG-13 - if my memory serves me correctly. There is a lot of suggestive content in the book, but they handled it all very well in the movie. I was afraid that the movie would be too trashy if they tried to show too much, and they didn't... which was perfect, and I'm assuming that's what kept it from being rated R in the first place.

And a few of my nitpicks... because I've been thinking about the movie:

1. Nobu had two arms! I mean... WTF?
2. Sayuri's eyes, I thought, were far too saturated. I'd always imagined them being more of the grey-blue rather than that deep, cerulean blue. It was hard at points to tell they were blue at all. I thought they should have been lighter and more transparent...

End.

Hehe. Nobu was meant to have one arm... the other was just sort of a stub - he'd lost it in a war or some gay thing like that (lol)... they had intended to make him as repulsive as possible, I imagine. But in the movie, he didn't seem all that horrid at all! It was a disappointment.

The book is something that is just great for the detail and imagery. For things like this - especially the descriptions of the kimono - you'll enjoy reading it a lot.

End.

Samrita is on a distinguished road
i saw the book in the the store one day and I was thinking of getting it because it sounded cool but I didn't. then I saw the trailer for the movie and went to see. It was an awesome movie. I've always loved Japanese culture and media. It's amazing how they can walk on those shoes!

I have to resurrect this thread because I received the book and DVD for my birthday (early) and I just finished watching it and most of the featurettes.

This movie is so spectacular. The book outstrips it. It does. It's an incredible book and I was astounded that Chiyo/Sayuri was not a real person at all. I read it once and I intend to read it again ASAP.

And, even though the movie takes some liberties with the book, it stuck to the love story very well...and I just loved it. It was so moving and so emotional. And I probably wouldn't have noticed the slightly different accents of all the actors, and how the language barrier worked against them, if one of my classmates hadn't done her film review assignment for my COM writing class and pointed that out. I thought their choices of actors were excellent.

I would've liked to see Hatsumomo's downfall like the one in the book instead of the fire. That was such a dramatic destruction of her; I truly think that it shows how the repressive society and manners expected of her broke her in the end, how she just went crazy. The fire was more over-dramatic, if you get me, and for a minute I was completely confused as to why the okiya was still standing (since another okiya burned to the ground in the book, or was talked of).

Also...they just did an INCREDIBLE job with the world of the geisha itself. What a world. They got it down so beautifully. I'm no expert, but just watching the lengths they went to behind-the-scenes shows an amazing authenticity that they wanted to, and did, bring to the movie.

So yeah. Officially on my 'favorite movies' list What a movie. And what a book. Read the book, see the movie. Both are amazing.
