GO USA!

*Disclaimer - This picture is from the movie "Team America: World Police". In said movie, there is a song called "America! Fuck Yea!" I thought it fit in nice with the country I am from and will be supporting in the Olympics. I also thought it was a bit funny too! In no way am I condoning or implying American Olympians should start a war in Beijing.

I didn't think they were stopped. I think they were just set up in a place where there was no wars going on, like in Beijing. There's no wars going on in China.
I could be wrong. But yeah, I'm not rooting for any certain country. I don't like sports anyway. There must always be competition in everything, right?

Leave your circus in the Evbored forum, this is what it was created for. I'm pretty fed up of seeing it in almost every thread.

i really dont see how that was bringing in the circus. it's a commonly known movie and plays at the whole team america bit and how ridiculous we are with wars. however, he just took the image out of that context to use as a humorous way of showing his support for the american teams.

no one said anything about war until you did :/

i dont usually watch the opening ceremonies. ive just never really given a crap about the olympics. occasionally ill watch a few things but im not that involved with it.

and i dont like the idea of it being held in china for various reasons, but that's a whole other story.

In Olympic news, team USA soccer(men & womens) have already played their first game. Why they did before the opening ceremonies I don't know. The women lost and the men won.

I'm looking for the USA mens basketball team to own this year. The past few Olympics we've gotten owned. That just shouldn't be.

It was derailed in the very 1st post. If you don't know how to start a thread on a serious topic, which isn't in the Debate forum, then don't start it.

And this is the last off-topic post in this thread. All future ones will be deleted. Discuss Olympics.

...this year all the propaganda and resulting bullshit is wasted on a country that does not deserve it.

Actually.. think of all the attention the problems in China are getting BECAUSE of the olympics. Stuff that the international community would normally ignore or be unaware of is now center stage. China is finding it hard to hide the distasteful side of itself with all this international attention. THIS is how change happens, and it's a huge step forward that such a reclusive, xenophobic society has not only embraced the international community and hosted the olympics, but that the world is now able to get a first-hand look at life in that country. I think having the Olympics there is absolutely brilliant.

That being said... GO USA! I echo the sentiments of my countrymen (and women) in this thread, who so elegantly said:
AMERICA.. FUCK YEAH!

Yeh, think about the good things that can come because it's hosted in China.

After the athletes have blackened their lungs from the smog and soot, they can probably expect a new set... harvested from live Fulon Gong members, and other prisoners. Win Win at the expense of the environment and other people!

I'd rather be a loser in this case, and not winning at the Olympics. I don't know how these athletes can sleep at night from the moral choices they are making right now.

I don't understand you Miles. These athletes train and live their whole lives for the chance to compete in the Olympics. The events are the same, the competition is the same, they have been preparing themselves for these moments for so long, why should the environment hold them back? If anything, it may just encourage them to work harder toward their goals of victory. I just don't understand why an entire, universally popular, competition between nations should be abandoned simply because the country the Olympics are being held in is a bit distasteful in its moral codes.

You're telling me that instead of supporting your fellow athletes you will condemn them for living their dreams and condemn the rest of the world for actually coming together on the rare occassions they do? I'm sorry, but in matters such as these, I strongly feel that politics need to be set aside. Let's just forget the shitproblem that is China right now and focus on the spirit of the Olympics. Seriously.

First day of games and it's currently basketball. Who the fuck wants to watch basketball? There are so many sports that should not even be considered sports, or sports that shouldnt be in the Olympics.
Syncronised swimming for example - you telling me thats a sport? Its like watching paint dry.
I have heard there is Olympic hopscotch. Tell me it's a joke. Please.

Anyway, I missed the OC last night but the papers had reports of it, nothing too flash from what I could tell.
Pity they couldnt do enough about the smog, 'oh its fog' yeah sure...the only thing the athletes will arrive home with is a throat infection and maybe a medal or two.

Now apparently Miles has said something and I believe I will agree but I will have to check to make sure first...

EDIT: Never mind. Post has obviously been deleted.

Carry on.:)

im sorry but what?!

i only watched about an hour or so of it but it was pretty involved and quite the thing to watch. i dont support how much money they spent on it. it is beyond obscene regardless of whether or not the country has the money to spend on it.

but they had thousands upon thousands moving in unisons, lights, fireworks, a huge ass led screen that showed stuff while they moved and did their different performances.

it was quite the thing to watch and i dont typically watch the olympics/opening ceremony.

If anything, it may just encourage them to work harder toward their goals of victory. I just don't understand why an entire, universally popular, competition between nations should be abandoned simply because the country the Olympics are being held in is a bit distasteful in its moral codes. If they want to put themselves at risk, so be it. But, they could have trained for the 2012 Olympics. So, yes, they have a choice. I disagree with the location, and I'm far from alone with voicing some concerns. It also remains to be seen how the 'permitted protests' will unfold, as well as how the authorities will handle any 'unpermitted protests' during the games.

You're telling me that instead of supporting your fellow athletes you will condemn them for living their dreams and condemn the rest of the world for actually coming together on the rare occassions they do? Yes. Do the ends justify the means? Is it ok to say, "Ok we'll compete in China as long as we can't have certain liberties"? "Let's support achievement but without the ability to state the glaring problems of the immoral Communist government, such as population control and forced abortions for having more than one child per household." I'm sorry, but in matters such as these, I strongly feel that politics need to be set aside. Let's just forget the shitproblem that is China right now and focus on the spirit of the Olympics. Seriously. Let's set aside, also, the Berlin games of 1936. And forget that 3 years later was the Blitzkrieg in Poland.

I will agree that the very hot world spotlight on China's problems may eventually lead to a betterment for the country. But looking back on history, I'm not sure the status quo of world order will look favorably at China hosting an Olympics while at the same time expecting dissent to go quietly away in the name of 'world unity and harmony'. Sorry, but if everybody jumps off a bridge, that doesn't mean I have to.

I know this isn't debate forum, so I have had my say and will let it go...

Since you think those who participate in them have no morals, you'd be quite the hypocrite for watching them.

And Mary, the opening ceremonies were probably one the best ever. You should of checked them out.

^ I saw about a half hour of the highlights last night as I couldn't watch it on the night. It was okay - especially the drummers and they turned the lights off, and those people in boxes or something that had something to do with the earthquake, that was good, but I honestly prefered Sydney and Athens. Guess I'm the odd one out here. Oh well.

Oh and yes our uniforms were shithouse, I don't know who decided to dress our people in those blue outfits but they should be shot. What happened to our traditional green and gold? Those are our colors, we are not blue, never have been and never will be. What an embarrassment.

The US has never done well in synchronized diving. In fact, they've never even medaled in that event. No surprise they struggled tonight.

I absolutely LOVE how the French swimmers talked all kinds of smack about the US before last night only to lose. lols. Silly Frenchmen.

Boy did they look stupid. Especially since it pretty much looked like they had it in the last leg, and considering that their last swimmer was the medal/record holder. :P What losers.

We fail at anything synchronized because we're Americans. We're told, Do this together and we're all, I DUN THINK SO BITCHES. I mean, did you WATCH the opening ceremonies?? Could you imagine trying to gather hundreds of Americans to pull that off? Exactly. Impossible.

China just wanted to look good, period. And they're pulling every string to make that possible. That's really just so typical of China and it doesn't surprise me in the least.

In other news, the U.S. is maintaining a lead in the medal count; however, China still has the most golds. And surprisingly, Russia is quite a ways down the list!

Phelps also tied the record for career gold medals last night... and is going to be looking to hold that record alone coming up soon here.

And I think it's also worth noting how the men's gymnastics team did last night. China pulled out the gold, because they were essentially perfect, but in a surprise twist, the USA claimed bronze, which was a phenomenal stunt! No one expected us to medal in men's gymnastics... but we were on our game enough to keep the Japanese worried and to beat out the Germans. Hooray!

So, China takes the gold in Women's Gymnastics, winning by 2.235 over the US, but it was said that a big reason for that was because nearly all of their routines were more difficult and had higher start values.

Seriously though, raise your hand if you had a tiny orgasm watching Nastia Liukin on the uneven bars. Or Shawn Johnson on the beam. *raises both hands* Amazing.

Also, USA got the gold in the men's 4x200m free relay, and during the national anthem portion of the medal ceremony Mike Phelps was just laughing his ass off at whatever the guy next to him was saying. Of course, I'd probably be giddy too if I'd just gotten my 11th career Olympic gold medal...

But we totally deserved to lose after all those mistakes we made. We just made way too many screw-ups. We had plenty of chances to beat China. It's just that Johnson and Liukin kept having to make up for that Sacramone's mistakes. ::Sighs:: It was just a bad choice putting her on the team, but oh well.

I watched the womens weightlifting last night...did anyone see that Chinese women with a name like Lilu or Lulu or something? I think she got a WR by lifting about 150 kilos. You know how they usually lift the weight then balance it on their shoulders before they lift it up? This woman, seriously, just reached down, picked up the weight, flung it up over her head, and stood up with it. She made it look so easy!!! It was amazing, although, you know, I was thinking how can that be possible when no one else can do it that way.
Oh well, she was quite good to watch.

The diving as well, our Aussies came last in the five meter - I think - dive thing. We kept making too many mistakes and China won that one too. One of the countries divers made a huge mistake and one ended up twisting out of time with the other one. Looked really odd.

Oh, and Leisel Jones won another heat (i think it was a heat or s semi or something) so I am sure she'll take home another gold.

Not only is all this news not surprising, but it also doesn't matter. So China cheated... big deal. Seriously. Olympic officials aren't going to bother to correct these kinds of mistakes/errors; it just won't happen, especialy since China's the host country this year. There's just no way. It doesn't matter. There are a variety of tests that could be done to guess age within a few months... x-rays, for example.

But in the end, it just doesn't matter either way. The medals were awarded, end of story. So the Chinese come out looking a little worse for it, OH WELL. Basically, the IOC isn't going to renig something like that. I recently heard a story (sorry I don't have a source) during the Olympics last night, where THEY were responsible for actually mis-scoring one of the Korean athletes and it cost them a medal (something like that). They ADMITTED to the error later, they accidentally gave the routine a lower start value than it deserved, by a whole point. But even after they admitted the error, it wasn't corrected and the medals weren't adjusted accordingly.

So will it happen in this case? No. It's a shame that there are people out there that aren't exactly willing to play by the rules, but shit happens. And it's not just my opinion... that's just the way things ARE right now with the Olympics. That's just how they deal with things. And I never alluded to the fact that the other teams look worse off, because they do... that's just obvious.

I don't know anything about the synchronized swimmers, specifically, but I found an article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7562840.stm) on Michael Phelps' "unusual diet"--seriously, look at what that man eats for breakfast. I heard him say in an interview a while back that he needs to eat between 8,000 and 10,000 calories a day. I don't know if that's just during the height of competition or if it's all the time, but damn. Talk about eating like a horse.

It was a mistake to be rocking my son to sleep during the 100m fly final last night--I was holding Dylan and at the same time screaming "GO! GO! So now women's gymnastics is over too, and apparently there is a modicum of justice in the universe because Shawn Johnson got the gold and Nastia Liukin got silver.

TBH, I'm more than a little bitter about that ridiculous, convoluted "tie-breaker" method they used last night, when Nastia and the little 12-yr-old Chinese girl had the same score, but Nastia still got silver. Even after having the "tie-breaker" rules explained in no uncertain terms, it seems more than a little ridiculous that what's-her-name got a gold when her routine was CLEARLY not anywhere near as solid or well-performed as Nastia's.

The short version of the tie-breaker rules for anyone who missed it:

Both Liukin and He had start values of 7.7 for their routines, and the six judges who rated their performances on a 10-point scoring system, deducting points for form breaks and errors, also rated them in a dead heat.

Liukin’s scores ranged from 9.3 to 8.8, with deductions ranging from 0.7 to 1.2 points. He’s scores ranged from 9.3 to 8.9, with deductions ranging from 0.7 to 1.1 points.

Under FIG rules, the first tiebreaker was to drop the highest and lowest deductions for each gymnast and average the remaining four deductions. But in this case, Liukin and He each had an average deduction of 0.975 points for the middle four scores.

The second tiebreaker calls for the remaining highest deduction to be thrown out and the final three averaged. As a result of that computation, He had an average deduction of .933 points to Liukin’s .966 points and, thus, was declared the winner.

Apparently part of the problem is that there can't be any judges from the same country as any of the competitors, so you get judges from countries with smaller, less established gymnastics programs--and therefore, the judges aren't totally competent to fairly judge the skills they're watching. Nice job, IOC.

But major w00t to Shawn and Nastia. They both did amazingly well and they deserved it.

Is anyone else a little sad that the big, huge events of the Olympics are pretty much over? It's kind of a bittersweet feeling to know that it's drawing to a close soon, and it's made worse by the fact that the stuff I was interested in is done with. :( I'll just have to spend the next 4 years getting psyched up about the London Games, LOL.

*The reason I kept putting "tie-breaker" in quotes is simply this: I think if two competitors have the same score, there ought to be a runoff where they do another, shorter performance/skill set. It seems a bit stupid to just throw out this score and that score till you come up with a winner.

I'm glad that they are investigating this further; however, I'm somewhat upset to hear that Olympic officials waited until someone actually dug up evidence on this girl's age instead of conducting their own investigations before-hand when there was so much question. There are plenty of ways to test for age, and I'm somewhat astounded that they refused to do so until someone actually showed them government proof going HEY THERE IT IS IN BLACK AND WHITE!

How many medals do you Aussies have again? Currently they have 45: 14 gold, 14 silver, 17 bronze. For me, That's a fairly decent haul for a country of only 21,000,000 people. But as long as the US beats China in overall medals, that's the biggest thing the medal count tally should state. We have 1/6 of their population, but we can still whoop all those commies. :D

And maybe in 8 years, they'll reduce the number of medals awarded to china once they get to the bottom of gymnastics and other sports where they used disqualified or doped up athletes.

It's well known that Olympic officials test many athletes for certain drugs. They also keep vials of blood/DNA to be tested at LATER dates, just in case we develop the technology to test for even MORE performance-enhancing drugs. So, theoretically, athletes that competed in the 2008 Olympics, could be stripped of their medals 20 years down the line if a performance-enhancing drug was found to be in their system back then. They're pretty serious about it.

THANK GOD the Olympics is over!
I'm kind of sad. :(

Ugh, especially watching the Closing Ceremonies and having to be reminded of how awful and gaudy that damn 2012 logo. -.- Whoever designed that needs to be shot.

I know we had a thread about it here back when it was first announced, but there's no way I'm going to try and search for it. :P

I'm sad that it's over! Damn. I actually cried a little bit when the torch went out. :/

But did anyone see the interview w/ Michael Phelps in London right at the end of the ceremony, and just before they showed coverage of the Athlete's Party? I can't decide which I like better...seeing him wear normal-person clothes, or just the teeny-weeny Speedo. ;)

WOW @ the "Memory Tower" they brought out, especially when they climbed it and made it look like the torch. I also loved the montage of great moments they did during the credits, that was pretty freakin' awesome.

If I start saving like, yesterday, I could maybe scrounge up enough cash to somehow hitchhike my way to London in 2012. Who's with me?

I know about the rejected comment, but are you serious about the colors? I think the bigger problem is the entire design over the color choices, lol.

Eh, I saw it. I'm not a fan of Phelps when he's being interviewed. The boy just doesn't know how to string a sentence together very well. I mean, it's cute and all... and he strikes me as being very genuine, but whatever.

I definitely prefer him in the speedo because he looks like such a dork, lol. When he's in the speedo at least I can stare at his wonderfully toned body. :P

ZOMG! They are actually still going to use that thing? And I thought I would never have to see that creepy-ass logo again. *rofls*

the colours were the first thing that really hit me. the design is obviously flawed it looks like a school art project gone very very wrong. it is London you think it would be more suave and tasteful

Believe me, the whole of the UK is bemoaning the decision to use that logo, because it's horrible. A while back, before they announced it, they printed some other designs out and there were far better ones, so why they didn't choose one is beyond me. The rest of them were brilliant, and they picked the worst one, wtf?!

This is another one that was popular:

Wow, China improved by 40 medals since there last Olympic appearance. So nice they won whilst hosting as well. Pity the Olympic officials are to tight to drug test every medal winner. I know thats what I would do.

Yeah, and too bad they won't check into the ages of certain gymnasts. Guess their pockets have been sufficiently lined now by the Chinese government. ;)

As for the 2012 official logo... HOLY CRAP that gives me a headache.

But seriously, it is, at least in MO.

As for the logo, I think it could be better then that one
shown above.
That looks to simple, thye should put a little spunk into
it at least, make it really catchy to the eye! :)
