I think Big Bro can be funny sometimes. I don't really care for the eviction shows, but the highlights are good to watch - I'd love to watch replays of good parts of my week. I wouldn't say I'm obsessed, but I'm definately not against.
It seems most people over 25 don't like the idea of reality TV shows. In fact, I've seen like 4 or 5 people express their disapproval of the idea, and then proceeded to discuss happenings in the house a couple of weeks later. It's not doing any harm, it's just good ole entertainment and the occasional police phone call...

I think it's pretty much pathetic that people watch the lives of other people for entertainment. People obsessed with those shows seriously need to get a life. To me, TV is a way to get away from reality.

I'm not really against them as such-just the popularity of them, really...people talk about Big Bro all the time, and all the others-the only one I enjoy watching about is I'm A Celebrity-Get Me Out Of Here. Otherwise, I don't enjoy them at all. It's sooo annoying how much publicity they get-I mean, BB, what the fuck is so interesting in watching people sitting in front of the tele on their fat asses doing absolutely nothing, apart from futile attempts at flirting and trying to get sex off of some other housemate?!
Personally, I couldn't care too much that they actually exist-the people who actually are involved in being filmed are (I hope) at least intelligent enough to know what they're going into, and what the job entails, and they'll very probably be ridiculed in the process. So long as they know (and are probably stupid enough to know and still do) what they have to do, why should it bother us? As I said, the only annoying thing about them are the publicity they get.

My absolutely against. I see how people changed by these programs. They are unnatural. They do what people want to watch. I think it's a bit better show than zoo. Everyone from these programs like Big brother are too cute and ideal. They are chosen by jury (read: by program's rules). They are put into comercial layout. I don't know what people see in these shows... At the beggining I liked watching first edition of big bro, but the next editions were, ekhm, just a shit. Maybe sometime i will chane my opinion, but it might be really good show, without "monkies".

I'm against reality shows... There really is absolutely NO POINT in ANY of the shows I've heard about, or even watched an episode of. TV is being ruined by reality shows. Although one show that I watched a few times was Last Comic Standing. (That might not even be a reality show but I wouldn't know 'cause I never watch TV)
But, yea, I'm totally against reality shows.

I don't tell others what to watch or anything, but I don't like these shows, and I don't understand what makes them so popular. For this reason I have trouble watching Fox News. Since Fox owns them, they cover what's going on in these shows. I wish they wouldn't mix standard news with entertainment news like that. Of course, other TV news organizations have their own problems. Fortunately I have the internet--the EvBoard feels like a show with me as a character...heh...
Most sitcoms bore me too. I find myself watching mostly movies and animated shows like South Park. But why watch "reality" shows? I find reality all around me--when I turn on the TV I want something different.

I think reality shows are entertaining, but I also think they're an invasion of people's privacy... Sometimes some shows go waaay too far with what they put on TV. I think reality TV producers should think about what all they put out there and how it's gonna affect the stars' lives.

I am so glad that most of you agree with me! :D Reality is all around us, we do not want to watch also in television! I get really annoyed when at the late news instead of politics or other important information about social matters the channels talk about new flirts at "fame story" or "Big Brother" I think we should really worry about the quality of today's Tv shows! In my country things are worst cause there are also gossiping shows where all kind of silly people(being false called reporters) just sit and analyse the personal life of the players at reality games! Every lost relative or "friend" just calls to talk about them to gain 5 minutes of publicity! It is just a pity!

In my opinion, they are not moral. Take "Fear Factor" for example, those people have to eat bugs, drink cows blood, eat pig hearts, etc. to compete for $50,000 (or $500,000, I forgot lol). That's insane that you would put some of your own values to the side just to win some cash. "Survivor" has become very phony in my opinon as well as "Big Brother". I also couldn't stand the "Swan". Those are the shows that bother me the most. I don't see the point in them. Those shows just prove in the end that the average human will do anything for money...that's what it all comes down to doesn't it. I wish the whole reality show fad would just die down already :( .....

Personally, I can't stand most of them. One of my best friends is addicted to them and it drives me crazy cuz she always talks about them.... my feelings are like this on reality shows:
They are not REALLY REALITY. The are cropped, edited, and slanted. Let's say in the course of one 40 hour week you have one 5 minute "snit" - well, next thing you know, in a 1-hour show, they focuse on tht 5 minute "snit" and next thing you know, you are the beeyoootttccchhh of the show.
Not to mention the reality of it all is not a group of people with perfect figures in a mansion.
I watch TV to escape reality, to watch a story, not to be bored with so-called reality shows on who is hooking up with who.
HOWEVER- there is one I watch from time to time.. I don't follow it tho, don't even know the name. But it is on PBS or something like that and it is a group of people who are forced into a colonial period and have to learn to live life in that type of setting -making your own food, sewing your own clothes, building your own homes, no currency, only barter, no plumbing or electricity, etc.... to me, I like that show because it is educational and I really think about what our ancestors had to deal with in living during that time period.

My answer is pretty simple. So I'll do it the fun way:
Big Brother (Aus):
Series 1: Lets put some people in a house! Get all of Australia to become voyuers and spend all their money on their mobile phone bill so they can pretend they form some kind of difference to the outcome of this show!
Series 2: .. Let's do it again!
Series 3: ..... Err, let's spilt the house in to two, that's original, and it will get us more ratings!
Series 4: Fuck guys, we are running out of ideas, let's just do the exact same thing that we did with the last three seasons except make the grand prize a million dollars! Yeah, we have lots of money, that'll make people watch us!
Survivor:
...actually, I'm not going to go anywhere near this pile of piss for a show
Oh, I nearly forgot Celebrity Big Brother, where they put washed up actors and TV hosts in the house for a short period of time, but also give them privacy in the showers etcetc. Because we know that Tv stars are actually better people then us plebs.
Wait, no, but these great Tv stars are doing it for charity! They are perfect role models in society. Waitaminute, don't they get paid for some of the air time, and don't the producers of the Tv show STILL pull a profit into their pockets after the show gets aired?
See why I don't like reality TV.
a) it's fucking pointless
b) it hurts my head :/

I'm probably the only one in this thread who loves reality shows, but oh well, I do. :D
As far as it being an invasion of privacy, I don't agree at all! These people know when they apply for the show just what it entails - so we really aren't invading ANYTHING in my opinon.
But I love Big Brother the best out of all of them, in fact, I even subscribe to the live feed. Oh and American Idol, but that's not really a reality show, is it?
Now, there is ONE type of show that I think is TOTALLY wrong. I forget what it was called even, but the one where they told this lady she was going to be in the house with all these good looking guys and they were the dweebiest guys ever. To me, a persons looks don't matter, but some people it does matter to and that girl just seemed really shallow. It's not HER that I care about getting hurt, it's the poor guys who really fell for that girl and genuinely liked her.
Well there ya have it, that's my two cents. :)

Some reality shows are okay. For instance, I really like Real World and Road Rules, and maybe even the first season of Survivor. But it has gotten out of control. Fear Factor, for instance: what the hell is the point of a show about eating gross stuff and jumping out of planes? And what does that have to do with reality?
In particular, the "reality show" I most hate is Extreme Makeover. How can you take somebody with low self-image and self-esteem and tell them that they're RIGHT? Some of these women were beautiful before the knife even touched them. Instead of responding to "I'm ugly" with "yes, you are; now let's fix it," shouldn't we be asking why they feel that way, and counseling them to love themselves for who they are? And one moment in particular that I loathed was the "honey, it's a scalpel, not a magic wand" moment. I thought she was pretty. And so did a bunch of little girls, who were probably thinking "wow, if she wasn't pretty enough, and she's prettier than me, what does that make me?" Great. Another thing to make our young girls insecure about their weight and appearance. Oh, and another way to depict false reality. Good one.

It's TV companies appealing to the very unnattractive "Bread and Circusses" side of the public. What shocks me is their popularity.

Reality T.V. is really one of the world's guilty pleasures, methinks. Almost everyone watches them, whether they're a fan or not.
Over the years, reality T.V. has gotten dumber, and, unfortunately, more numerous. In the beginning, we only had Survivor. At that time, it was clever and different.
Compare that to what we watch today-- like that stupid talent show where they give the record deal to the worst singer. Television Execs. put shows like 'Fear Factor' and 'My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance' (or whatever it was called) which have absolutely no point whatsoever. They're not particularly entertaining, and it's kind of sad that people would put themselves through something like that for 15 minutes of fame.
Reality T.V. isn't 'reality' either-- not conventional reality, anyway.
How can you possibly act normal if you've got cameras in your face, and you're put in unnatural situations?

I used to find them somewhat amusing - until I saw the Stepford Wives. There's this scene in the movie where the main character, Joanna {Nicole Kidman}, was showing the crowd her new reality show ideas. There was this one called "I Can Do Better" and this guy lost his wife to a bunch of male strippers. He got all depressed and I thought that even though that particular clip wasn't reality, people that really do that shit could be going through the same stuff. I just don't think it's okay to put this one person up with 20 of the opposite sex and have that one person choose only one. Because what if all 19 other people or at least some fell for that person, only to see them choose one? It's wrong. And this "For Love Or Money" shit is the WORST reality show I've seen in years. Fucking. stupid. All of it.

In my opinion i think reality shows have gone too far. I mean in the beginning they were ok because they were just starting out and had new fresh ideas to do. now they have made so many that they make one reality show and then every other network creates one of their own and they are like the same show. i am just tired of seeing them all.

What I still just can't believe is that they cancelled Wonderfalls (which is way more better) just to make way for The Swan.

the one i REALLY hate is WB's superstar USA. My parents watch this all the time. They actualy have to nerve to say at one point that the show was to basicaly make fun of all the cookie cutter pop stars coming out of shows like american idol, as if they're trying to make some sort of point with this show. PLEASE. horrible singers being humileated over and over again on television and then having their little dreams of superstardom crushed in the end when theyre told its all a lie = the show making lots and lots of money.
It's just the fact that they tried to tell people that they were trying to make some sort of point with this show. arghh. the only reason i watch tv now is the occaisional ep. of family guy and to see music vids. ....*cough* okay and canadian idol...But, like someone mentioned earlier, are the idol shows and stuff like last comic standing actualy reality shows? everyone kinda puts them into that category but it's really more of a gameshow isnt it? I'm against reality tv. Shows like Last Comic Standing are okay, considering it
is about real people and it's for a career, not a get rich quick scheme. But the
shows like Survivor and Big Brother are about a bunch of backstabbing half-

watching the next show. And where is the reality in half of the challenges?
It's just stupid that people get obsessed over this kind of crap.

The only reason anybody watched or is watching Big Brother is in the vain hope of seeing a real, live sex show, a punch up or a suicide attempt. Could you imagine the headlines?
"Dickhead in the Big Brother house realised the futility of his own pathetic existence and was found hanging from the light fitting in the kitchen area this morning. Channel 4 to retain sole video rights. Twatface, who discovered the limp body of Dickhead, is currently too traumatised to negotiate a book deal."
C*nts.
LOL Fuck iv missed you head!!!! I agree compleatly. These people are picked for there self absorbed nature. I was forced to see some of the first big brother and the people were half normal. they picked a dominatrix chick and she was out first go! but now when my missus puts it on, all I see is a bunch of good looking young wankers acting up for the camera!

So-called 'Reality' TV is total rubbish and should be discarded where it should be...in the freaking dumpster (or if ur in the country like me, the burn barrel!)
I agree!! It is total rubbish!

Most of it is pre-scripted or picked in a way that will most likely cause drama and conflict, making the show interesting, when maybe 25% of it is true "unscripted reality".

i think we have completely crossed the line. it all just seems so fake now and i wouldn't wanna sit around and actually watch someone elses life and all the drama. it's just not my type of fun. and we have totally over done it. it seems as if people on the shows overexagerate or do alot of it for attention. like for example the real world. too much fake drama for me. i can see fear factor but that's about it. other thatn that we all need not to be so into these shows. in my opinion. i don't mean to offend anyone but im just saying. it's fake entertainment to mean.

seeing as though i was on one, i can't truely be against them. I'm against people dedicating a whole hour of their short lives to watching other peoples drama... entertainment today.......

i think alot of reality shows are pointless, stupid, and downright dirty, but some of them are very entertaining. i love the ultimate fighter on spike tv, it's entertaining, and you see they are actually working hard for their dreams. they don't vote people out simply because they don't like them, they have to fight for it, and then the losers goes home. it's one of the few reality shows that actually caught my attention.

Most of them are just a waste of my time. My poor brain hurts when I look at some of those people

I go to high school. That's all the reality TV I need, right there.
Also, I find shows like The Real World incredibly hypocritical. You call these people "real?" They're all beautiful people with designer clothes. Sometimes they throw in the token black guy or the token gay guy just so it's more "diverse." Yeah, okay. And yet, HOW many seasons has this show ran?
It kind of scares me that people really like watching other people get humiliated. That's really bothersome.

Theres really an algorithm for the cast on the show.
1) The loud obnoxious party frat boy.
2) Gay man (sometimes the aggressor, known to keep grudges the entire season for some fag joke)
3) Ethnically proud person (normally hispanic/black man or woman, often talks about "where they came from" like anyone other than Oprah cares)
4) Innocent virgin (sometimes a Mormon)
5) The aggressor/instigator (sometimes the gay or ethnic person)
6) The thinker/artist/philosopher (normally arrogant when they talk)
7) The drama queen (sometimes the most drunk)
Each season has staple characters that follow the above list.

In its first few seasons, the Real World was real . . . er, at least as real as it could've possibly been. It just evolved into what it is today, unfortunately, because it did tackle real issues early on (ex-- abortion; HIV/AIDS; and I think one cast member had a family/friend commit suicide). Nowadays everything is just so disgustingly typical and repetitive.

There are so many reality shows on these days, featuring every topic you can think of (except maybe highschool  ) that I will not be surprised if they come up with a reality show called:
Living in Reality: The New and Improved Reality Series. (or something of that nature) Or, maybe they'll make up a cable channel called: "The Reality Channel" :p
And the people on the shows are all so damn annoying and hypocritical..not to mention stereotypical...why bother calling it 'Reality' when in fact its nothing like reality at all?
(if any of that made sense....:p )
In other words, they are wastes of valuable TV time. :p

I think that reality shows are examples of our society heading toward the crapper. Most of the shows are mean spirited, and specifically designed so that audiences can watch people suffer.

In some respects- this is why I cant watch reality contestant shows- American Idol, for example. I cant watch real people fail, fall, lose, be humiliated, get their dreams squashed, etc.
Frankly, pisses me off that it airs in the first place, but I personally cant watch stuff like that.
Except, I do enjoy when Super Sweet 16 girls cant get that $525,000 car they asked for, and think their life is over.

I've skimmed through most of these threads and I've also read a few posts and here is what I have to say,
I love reality shows. I really hate how people are always stating that viewers who watch them are looking for some porno or drunken behaviour. That is just a clouded opinion on what most people like watching reality shows.
I personally love the show Big Brother (American, the English and Australian ones are ridiculous) and they feature a wide range of people. I watch it because I find it entertaining to see how they can live a house and evict one another to see who gains the grand prize. I would love to be a contestant because I'd like to see how far I'd get and if I was good at competitions physically and mentally. Does it mean I crave attention? No. I got really upset when someone mentioned that those who go on these shows want attention, and it's mostly because they want the prize at the end (At least in BB that is). The situations about sexual harassment and what not have happened in other BB's, but the one I'm talking about is the American BB who I believe is the best out of all of them.
And the first reality show wasn't Survivor, it was Big Brother and it was first shown in Europe. I can't remember the country, but it was the FIRST reality show contrived and I assume Survivor came from that with a twist. Simple.
Please stop generalizing reality shows and the people who watch them, it's like you're trying to insult us viewers when we just want to watch the show for the pure fact of entertainment, not some cheap ass porno or drunken party.

Honestly, if people want to humiliate themselves on TV for the sake of 15 minutes of fame, I cant stop them, nor can anyone else who isnt personally involved with the person.
Its still amusing the watch though ^_^. Humans can do the silliest things when in the spotlight.

I think they maybe can be interesting in some point but there are a lot of"reality" shows that aren't real at all sometimes they fake the things to make them interesting =S

'Yasmin's Getting Married' was axed from Australian TV last week. It was a reality show about a woman who had to find a husband in just 9 weeks-then she would marry him on live TV.
With all the religious cranks preaching about how 'sacred' marriage supposedly is, it is a slap in the face for them to take a back seat with this program.
I really hate programs like this-they get someone married, then less than a year later they head for the divorce courts.

both, some reality shows are entertaining and tasteful, shows that help people overcome issues or make their lives better are great...i hate when people just fight the whole time...tv people are so dramatic, if i were on a reality show, i would not steal someone's shoes
