I just saw their video late last night on Mtv. It wasn't bad. Probably something I'd have to listen to a few more times to really warm up to. At least it wasn't the same old punk thing that a lot of bands are doing now. That's starting to get old :)

The only song I've listened at length is Girl's Not Grey, a song I love to death. The singer kind of scares me though. I downloaded a few other songs, but none of them really had the GNG sound to them, and uh... I didn't really like them that much. Maybe one of these days I'll buy one of their CDs and actually give it a good listen, though.

I love AFI. May go see them in a couple weeks, don't know. I don't really think Davey is a "Trent Reznor wannabe" but think what you want, using a couple lyrics isn't trying to be someone else, it's like a homage or something. And they're far from "nu-punk" which is a fake genre anyway. They've been kicking ass for 11 or 12 years now. Sing The Sorrow is their sixth full length. Give it a go. I got it when it came out having never listened to them before and loved it, neither single was out at the time, at least I hadn't heard it. The Leaving Song Pt. 2 was always my least favorite track on the record. The best being This Celluloid Dream, I'm still not sure why but it reminds me of The Great Gatsby. I'm not sure if that should scare me or not. Also great are The Great Disappointment and ...but home is nowhere. If you're looking to check out some older stuff God Called In Sick Today and Days Of The Phoneix are great, and of course the vinyl-only 36 salute to the greatest food ever to grace the planet, Key Lime Pie.

I really like them. I downloaded "Sing the Sorrow" from bit torrent. They have 9 albums though. I have only listened to StS, but love it to death. My favorite songs from that album are, "Leaving Song pt 2," "Dance Through Sunday," and "Death of Seasons."

I'm a big All Hollow's fan myself. There's also various singles and split LPs floating around but those are the major releases. Oh and the Special Edition of Sing The Sorrow that has a hardback book and DVD, that, along with Fallen, is the only CD I've ever bought twice. On the same format at least. I've got the LP boxset that has the first five records but I'm afraid to listen to them on the stupid old record player I have. There's only 1950 of those badboys, and old 950 of the edition I have. :D

I quite like them. I hadn't heard of them until girls not grey which a friend put me onto. I managed to get a copy of art of drowning which sadly i haven't listened to as much as i would like to have, but what can i say, i got a hold of it at the same time as the new coldplay and ben harper cds and i just haven't been able to go past either of those of late.

I love AFI! They are so cool! 'The fighting (or is it leaving?) song part II' whatever it is it's a good song!... so is 'Girls Not Grey'!

Ev is not my favorite band either, but I wouldn't tell someone they don't know anything because they assumed that since you are, in fact, on an Ev board that you like Ev a lot. I don't think that is very far out there... so I think "you don't know anything" is a little harsh. Perhaps you should try using something called "not being a bitch" next time.

i AM openminded, and i *have* listened to the art of drowning and black sails in the sunset in their entirety, and not found them particularly exciting. the lyrics, while interesting, were not especially prominent in the songs, which were sort of bad nu-punk.

i asked a question on the afireinside message board about the source of the lyrics and the song. i got two types of responses. one was kind of like yours, immature and havok-worshipping, and the other was "well, trent reznor did it too..."

so, for the record, i will state the case. nin has a song called "a warm place" which is an uncredited sort-of cover of a rare david bowie song called "crystal japan" the difference is as follow: david bowie and trent reznor know each other, and have worked together. and trent has never denied trying to immitate skinny puppy's "dig it" with his first single. and he got written and creditted permission to use the carly simon lyric, that if you don't know, you should be shot. (he even GRANTED fred durst permission to lambast one of his songs, which was another obvious parody)

this is not an obvious parody, and i have heard nothing about permission. show me that, and i won't call davey havock a theif or a poser.

now, my problem is with genius fans like yourself. i'm sure davey havok likes to express himself and be himself and blah blah blah. but he seems to trying to express trent reznor, not himself. take a look his material and it's sources, who he's trying to appear to be and image he presents, and compare it to the actual sound of the music, and who he thanks and supports in his liner notes.

Dude, calm down. You have to realize when you are asking people about their opinion, they aren't gonna lie to you. If they don't like it, they will say that (most of the time). Don't get pissed off about it, there isn't a need for that. People say how stupid Maynard is to me quite a bit, and I continue to run my Maynard site day in and day out.

This is getting a bit rediculous man. Trent Reznor does not own the words i hurt myself today i am becoming, believe it or not these are all very common words in the English language. Think what you want, but Davey Havok and AFI do not look or sound like NIN. They don't need permission to use the same phrase, and even if they did, it's just two lines, let it go. Besides, NIN did a Queen cover. By your logic Reznor is a Queen wannabe. Please note that I love NIN but I don't really see the purpose of this arguement, not likeing the band, that's fine, but hating them because they used six of the same words as NIN once did?

butch vig's the biggest unknown in the music industry. he drums or drummed for garbage, produces and remixes like a whore.

i feel the need the randomly point out that he remixed for nin back in the day. becuase, in fact the ONLY underground thing butch vig has ever done was a nin remix, which never made it out, and is only available because someone uploaded a really low quality aiff or something of it, and took it down the next day. and it's really good too.

I just borrowed my mate's AFI - Sing the Sorrow album the other day... I just can't get into it. The more I try to take it seriously, the more Davey Havok's singing/screaming makes me want to laugh. He sounds a bit like Weird Al Yankovic, especially in the first song! I guess I should've known when my mate begged me to 'hang on to it, please, don't give it back'!

I'm a big fan of AFI's music. As for the NIN rip-off thing, I wasn't aware of anything of the sort, and it's certainly wrong of them to do so, however, The Last Kiss is one of my favorite songs. As for the list someone posted of the CD's they have, they also have a lot of vinyl out there, but most of it is pretty rare, and very expensive. Their first EP, called Dork, went for $2,000 on EBay recently. They also have some stuff that isn't on any CD or album(The Chicken Song, anyone?). The hatred in this topic doesn't affect me, as there are a lot of bands that people listen to that I don't like. If you enjoy them, look the other way.

I also really love the song after the the two spoken story/poems at the end...the bonus track on Sing the Sorrow. All the guys are pretty scrawny. Davey is the one who's gained weight...which I may add I love and think looks fabulous. He used to be a scrawny little thing.

OK, I LOVED a lot of stuff about the 80's which makes me weird, being that I was 6 when it ended, so I'm going on video, magazine, and tv shows from the time, and I can say, that aside from some bad clothes, and bad New Wave music, the 80's were awesome! Especially when it came to metal. Van Halen, Ozzy, Dokken, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Cinderella, Ratt, Warrant...I love them all!

back to AFI, you guys need to see the new video for "Silver and Cold"! Everytime I see it, I like it more. oh, and all the jumping in the first video...that's just typical punk energy! :evilbat:

Ok, I heard AFI for the first time a year ago, because I saw the video on MTVla, Girl's Not Grey, and I liked them a LOT!. That was ok, until I saw The Leaving Song Pt. II O_O omg, great band. But much later, I saw Silver and Cold... I almost died. lol. I love that song!! after that, I started searching for the album on internet, I downloaded all "sing The Sorrow" tracks (Sorry for that. Believe me, I searched for the CD everywhere, and I just couldn't find it!! I can't buy it on the internet either). I simply love that CD, I litsen to it every day. I also downloaded "God called in sick today" and "the days of the phoenix",I like them a lot, but they are not as good as the ones in Sing The Sorrow.
Anyway, I have a question. I saw on Launch the other videos they have, and the guitarr player and base are not the same :confused: . Am I right? What is the story?

I love AFI...I have for about 6 years. I love everything about them, from their music to their lifestyle. They're awesome guys. I've met Davey Havok, and he's a kick ass guy. I love their lyrics. They're just a great band. Davey is the reason I am now Straight Edge, which means no alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, or casual sex. They've had a very positive influence on my life.

AFI are great. They just reentered their studio so theyre preparing new stuff, cant wait to hear that!

Some of my favorite songs are: This time imperfect (with the piano intro thing), god called in sick today, Days of the Phoenix and Miseria Cantare. But all their stuff is really good in my opinion.

Some say their lyrics dont make much sense, thats because you have to dig beneath them and try to understand. ;) I remember at first I didnt really like Davey's voice but you just get used to it.

It pisses me off when I hear their old fans saying they "sold-out" just because they appeared on mtv or whatever. :( They deserve the atteintion they get.

Wow...this thread is kinda old. To answer your question, yes, AFI is in the studios currently. New album I think comes next year (not sure though). If you go to afireinside.net, you can hear their new Nine Inch Nails cover "Head Like a Hole" which I can assume will be on the new album. (the song is featured on the soundtrack to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas)

Ok, am I the ONLY one that sees a giant problem in the AFI wants to be NIN theory??? I can see them admiring them. But, uh...lots of bands admire other bands, thats USUALLY why they get into music in the first place. I mean, TECHNICALLY all modern rock ripped off Led Zepplin, Joy Division, The Cure, The Beach Boys, and The Beatles. In fact, you can often hear stolen lyrics in their songs from those bands...kind of...strange...how that works. But that's not my giant problem...my problem is AFI and NIN sound NOTHING alike. NIN is one of the founding bands of Alternative Rock and Industrial Rock. AFI is the result of Gothic and Punk Rock re-fusing (Goth Rock was partially derived from Punk) and becoming what we now know as Emo Rock. THEY SOUND COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. I mean, they sound as similar as Smashing Pumpkins and Evanescence...Ev is probably a bunch of Pumpkins wannabes, right? Just because a band covers another band's work or even borrows a sentence, phrase (musically speaking), or chord progression (Greenday stole Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4" progression) doesn't make them theives. When a someone steals another band's material it is obvious...like Vanilla Ice and Queen...now that was just stupid.

Anyone else like that AFI's new album comes out on 6/6/06. :D

ok. I just got the album today and I have to say it's growing on me. This album, like all of the others, is a change of style for the group. That's what holds my intrest though. I am going to get the album when it comes out on June 6th...but I just couldn't wait to hear it. The first listen though I was kind of hesitant about weather I liked it or not, because I had fell so deeply in love with the sound on STS...the more I listen to this album though, the more I like it. It creates an atmophere just like STS did, perhaps even a better one. Ok...now to go though the songs...

1) Prelude 12/21- this is the little part played at the begining of the Director's Cut of the Miss Murder video. I like this opening for the cd really well, sets the mood for the album.

2) Kill Cuastic- this was just released on the AFI website and myspace, this is one of the more "punky" sounding songs of the album. I think that it's interesting that they decided to put this song in between "Prelude 12/21" and "Miss Murder" because when you watch the Director's Cut "Miss Murder" vid those two sound really good together. Not that this order takes away from the sound though.

3) Miss Murder- the first single-the moment I heard this song...some long amount of weeks ago I fell in love with it, and it is becoming one of my most played tracks. It reminded me so much of the sound that I loved on STS. When I first heard it I had hoped that the album would sound like this track, but now I realize that would have been like releasing STS II and that's not what I wanted, so I'm glad that it didn't turn out like that. I love the video for this song too.

4) Summer Shudder- Great chorus. Catchy little track. But not a track that stands out in my mind. This song sounds like it's about a troubled romance.

5) The Interview- quickly becoming one of my favorite tracks- a very beautiful song. This line struck me, "For a change, I'll refrain, From hiding all of me from you. (here's my lullaby.) Pray for rain, lose your name. And watch all your dreams fall through. (hush now)". I love this song. This is the song that has the album title in it, " I flee to decemberunderground. As you exhale, i breathe in and sink into, The water underground, And i grow pale without you."

6) Love Like Winter- really great sounding song, love the special sounds, and the guitar work.

7) Affliction- another one of my favorites- more "punky" than some others. This song sounds like it's about an unrequited love. It features Davey's lovely screaming! Great guitar riffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

8) The Missing Frame- very melodic. Davey's vocals are exceptional on this track, the vocal style reminds me of "This Time Imperfect". Kind of a sad song, but a really good one.

9) Kiss and Control- i like this song the more I listen to it- great lyrics!!! The ending is really great. This song is hard to explain it is just awesome.

10) The Killing Light- an alright song, nothing really as outstanding. The lyrics are pretty cool though. I think it's refering to self-mutilation but I can't be sure

11) 37mm- sounds really cool. Great lyrics, once again. Davey's voice is once again displayed beautifully. Love the industrial kind of sound.

12) Endlessly, She Said- a great last song. About a lost love of sorts. very touching song. Really sad when you listen to the lyrics.

13) Unlisted(outro)- you thought that was it...ha. Though this technically is just an instrumental outro, this is a good closer for the cd. Very short, but it doesn't take away from the album.

All in all---it is a worthy album. Will probably end up one of my favorites of 06.

Mashimaro: AFI never said anything about trying to be NIN. Just because a band covers a song or two from another doesn't mean they're trying to become that band. AFI is AFI and they change their style on every album. Also, I've been yelled at this enough. Emo = dead. AFI is not emo. My Chemical Romance is not emo. Hawthorne Heights is not emo. Don't hate the messenger, just understand the message. I'm still confused as to what true emo rock is, but whatever. I give up on classifying music because everyone has their own way of doing it. Now, let's not make this any bigger than we have to. Does the new AFI stuff have more electronica in it that resembles NIN some? Yes. But is it enough to say they're trying to be NIN? No.

When I listen to AFI I am not reminded of NIN at ALL(I am a fan of older and newer NIN)! AFI reminds me of...AFI.

I'm glad to hear that someone else thinks that MCR and Hawthorn Heights are not emo...even though emo is hard to define, if you listen to the first bands that coined the term...that is emo. MCR is more of a punkish-pop and Hawthorn Heights reminds me of a more mainstream hardcore. I would talk more about this...*clears throat* ...but this is the AFI thread.

The new album is really good, yea. Some people are upset at the different sound, but I've kind of come to exspect that.

That is really low down that someone would do that. But it is not uncommon. 5th Column is the shiz!! I can't wait until the 6th.

I think that the cd is friggin awesome. I've heard all of it like 6 times now (listened on the leak as well). My favorite songs at this point are: Interview, Kiss and Control and Endlessly, She Said.

I think 'Kill Caustic' is an alright song...I just think it's the wrong place on the album...or maybe it sould have been a b-side. It really doesn't add that much to the album. And I liked in the video how Prelude 12/21 and Miss Murder kind of went together.

Does he normally sing with a different style for all of his songs? Because he sounds completely different on "Miss Murder" compared to his other songs like, "Rabbits are Roadkill" or "Silver and Cold".

that's the thing about AFI they change a lot. it really depends on what era the songs are from. the older ones will sound more punk than the new ones... personally i like the new stuff better. i hope that helps :)

The older stuff was before they got signed to Interscope and like Evanescence, they probably never got to fully bloom until they had the freedom of a larger label.

As for the fact that Davey's voice is so different...I sometimes think there are 4 or 5 lead singers! Depending on the range he sings in, it sounds like different people. It makes for a lot of very unique songs.

Also, on AFI's myspace, you can now download the very weird, techno remix of Miss Murder. I personally don't like it, but I'm not a big fan of techno either, so that could explain some of it.

For a good sample of all the older albums, buy the Retrospective CD. It's got some great songs on there. For Sing the Sorrow, try Silver and Cold, Girl's Not Grey, and The Leaving Song, Pt. II. For Decemberunderground, I personally love the whole thing, but I think the main favorites are Kill Caustic, Miss Murder, Summer Shudder, and Kiss and Control (these would be my big ones, so they vary).

Also in regard to Davey's "emo" haircut. No. Just no. First off, hair isn't emo. It can't cut itself. It'd be nice, but it doesn't do that. Also, emo is dead, has been dead, and always will be dead. Simply cutting his hair to one side and dying it a few colors does not mean it's emo. In that case, several people now sport the new "emo" hair-do. Sorry to seem so gung-ho about the whole emo ordeal, but it bothers me and I'm always snapped at on the issue. So, here's to saving you guys on other boards/wherever the issue may arise. Don't take it personal.

If we had a drooling smiley, I'd place it here right now. I love the new video. I also loved the Making of LLW. Very funny and it had more interviews with the band members than the Making of MM.:mrgreen:

AFI have an EP coming out in December, most likely, and one of the songs can be found on Guitar Hero 3, entitled "Carcinogen Crush" [I probably spelled that wrong.] Can't wait to hear it. I've loved these guys for about 4 years and aside from the very first two albums, they never repeat themselves, always something different. :]
