View Full Version : Another LAN problem

I searched my threads. I posted a LAN problem before but my thread may have been deleted. So, here it goes again. A different problem though.

Finally, my mom bought a wireless router and I bought the card. It's a linksys router. My sis and I installed it and works fine. We got a signal but it keeps saying "Not connected to internet." I got a signal and everything. It says "Signal Strength: Excellent". I don't know why it won't connect to the internet. Internet explorer keeps saying "Page can't be displayed". We did the Setup Internet option through "Tools-Internet Options". Does anyone have the same thing as me and know how to fix it? Or, someone is very good at wireless connections and knows what to do. I don't want to return it just yet. I really want internet and my mom is being a bitch on letting me back on hers. I finally got XP so now we all have XP. I also don't want to call Linksys. I heard they charge you for their service. Eh..fuck no?! Someone please help! :(

In XP try going to Start / Run

type ipconfig /release

then ipconfig /renew

That should fix the problem. If not post back and let me know.

If you have broadband that is always online, you won't need to set up anything through tools / internet options unless your ISP/Building has specific connection / proxy settings.

My sis tried that. She says that it's fine. But, when I did it, it says that it's already been released. Then, when I renew it, it says error. I dunno what that ipconfig thing does. :/

When it comes to internet setups, I'm clueless. Broadband? ISP/Building? lmao. I'm so sorry. *Hits head*

Oooh, also, when I look at the internet status. When you know you have internet, it has those bytes in the "Receiving" part. I got that one time but still didn't connect to Internet Explorer. Blah!!! I hate this! :(

EDIT: Btw, I'm at work now so I can't really do anything. Just to let ya know. ;)

Have you checked that your network card is set to DHCP, and have you set that up on the router to act as a DHCP server? If it doesn't have that you might have to add it to the router. Most wireless routers have a DHCP server.

Also does your router have a DSL modem built in? If not you'll need to buy a DSL modem and plug that into the router. Feel free to PM me if your still having problems, I use a Netgear ADSL Wireless Router for my connection.

Hrmm, this is so strange.

What brand of Linksys is it?

Did you follow the install instructions for it exactly?

Oooh. I dunno. I'll ask my sis. She knows more than me. She was the main one trying to fix it.

We have DSL. My mom's computer is the main computer. DSL is on her computer. My sis shares with a wire and I'm trying to run from a wireless connection. I'm going to try again tonight. I'll PM if my sis has any questions. Thanks for your help. :)

I think this is the one (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=1174843) we got. Looks like it lol.

And this is the card thing-a-mah-jig. Here. (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2620285)

Yup. I followed everything. I reinstalled it like 6 times. I just don't get it. :/ When we put the new router in, my sis and my mom still got internet and I don't. Do you think it could be my internet explorer fucking with it?

EDIT: *Jumps around and does backflips* I am now at home with fuckin internet! I'm so happy!! My sis called Linksys Help Service for me and I love that guy who helped us! See yall muthafuggin 24/7 here on Evboard! :D

Thankyou guys for trying to help me. I love yall! :)

What did you have to do to get it working?

I was around her for a little bit. But, she told me the Windows Firewall was blocking it and she was typing some IP address in the Internet Protocol. The Linksys d00d was telling her what IP's to put in. She typed in from "IP Address" to "Alternate DNS Server". That's the only part I caught when I got home. I don't know what she did before that. I'm so glad I got internet now. :)

Might have been a port forward.

Never heard of IP to DNS ;p

Ports 80 / 8080 are the web ports.

OoooOooooOooooh! lol Dunno what that is. Ha!

LOL! I couldn't explain it. If I'd took a screencap of it...you will say "Aaahh!!!" :p

My sis got pissed at me now that I'm on the LAN. She got a virus. LOL! Her VirusScan was outdated when she had her old computer. So, she installed the new one. I had 625 viruses. BWAKAKAKAKAKA! That's a record.

Holy hell

625?

Lay off the downloads :p

If she had to change the IP / DNS that probably means yours is static and Windows can't detect it on it's own. It would have to be manually set because there is no DHCP
