I know for sure that ToB is into it and I know there are a few others on the boards that are. I used to study Tang Soo Do but I lost interest. I've actually been thinking about getting back into it here recently though.

my father is a fifth or sixth degree black belt in judo and jiu jitsu (martial arts where you actually earn your rank), and teaches both at the largest and best standing dojo in, i think, the state.

i dunno. i stopped doing it a long time ago, and don't really follow what he does in that area.

well.. i used to do karate.. i ws like a yellow belt. in like 1st grade. my dad was a teacher at the studio and a 4th degree black belt, i believe. tehn he gots himself in a car wreck (not his fault)and he had to stop. so. yeah. sucks. i would have liked to have stayed in it.. stayed in better shape, y'know ? i'd be more toned.

I'm a master of the art of Judo. Judoknow if I got a bat, judoknow if I got a gun...

On a serious note, I did do Judo for a while... but lost interest. I was so much bigger than everyone else in my skill-level that I could just be a jackass and like pick them up and drop them and stuff, and they could never throw me because I was too big. Was fun though.

Essentially, yes. I remember this one particular kid who was kinda lanky, so whenever he'd go in to throw me, I'd just grab him by the lapels and hold him like a foot off the ground. The instructors didn't like that... but damn, it was fun.

I just started into Hap Ki Do... it's a close relative to Tae Kwan Do but with more throwing... pretty fun. I chose it cuz it's supposed to be a sort of balance between the punch kick stuff and the throw stuff.

AND Scorpion uses it in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance therefore making it supremely cool and you all should envy my skillz0rs

I always wanted to take some form of martial arts. I think the ninja turtles made a huge impact on me when I was younger, but I never got around to taking anything serious. There was some guy that was teaching a self defense course down at our civic center, but then he just left one day. I found out later that he wasn't even a blackbelt and wasn't supposed to teach anyone around here or something like that. But I REALLY wanna take some form of martial arts. My friend, when he was younger, went to this thing in California and took Marsido (sp?) at a place where he lived with his master for a full year training every day and catching up on school work and stuff like that. I think it would have been supremely bad ass to do that, other than being whacked with a stick to be woken up each morning. My friend said that the master was trying to get them to be aware of surroundings when you were asleep, and by the end of the year, he hoped to have the kids catch the stick before it hit them in the face. Only one kid was able to do it by the time they got out.

I did Karate for a long time (at least 7 years all up) But that was a few years ago through high school and i was actually pretty good at it. I managed to get my black belt a few months before i went away to university where it seemed to take a back seat to alot of other things. I found one club close by but it was the complete opposite of what i had spent years learning. For example, my original style taught to move to the side or back and fight at a controled arm/leg distance while this new style said NO! step into the attacker and fight as close as possible using trips and throws. Well it was impossible for me to change my mind set after 7 years so i gave up on the new style. One day i would like to get back into it but currently where i live there is no club so its not going to be happening any time soon.

I studied Shotokan Karate when i was younger, and got up to green belt before i stopped. I've been thinking about picking it back up - something constructive to do, and i could certainly use the exercise!

Here are my combat skillz:

2 years of boxing

5 years of tae kwon do

10 years self taught

10 years wrestling

6 months combat training/sparring w/brother; an ex-Marine

Summary: I can take care of myself.

Did I mention I'm a biter?

I took a year of it in High School.. My instructor had a 2nd level black belt in Tae Kwan Doe, but he mainly taught us Akido. Akido is awesome. I could beat the red belts when they were foreced to only use TKD.

I only made it to yellow, I had my oragne belt test coming, but I dropped out of the school.

Since then, I've combined my gymnastics training with my self taught weapons (read: too many movies) with the "real" training I had. Throw in a little ballet from like ten years ago, and it's pretty fun.

I can do Neo's triple kick (a la first Matrix) with a full twist. Me and my friend were always doing the most insane things in gym. We scripted out the entire dojo scene, and then did it.
Ahhh.... good times.

I have a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon-do. Did it for seven years, but it started to get very repetative and I wasn't being challenged any more. I still practice at home, don't want to lose those skills. I loved breaking boards, and I was unbeatable in sparring. :D

I studied Ishinryu Karate for two years until my school expanded which caused the quality of the school to take a major blow. I've also studied some grappling (judo/jiu jitsu)...I'm currently trying to get in good enough physical condition so that in a year or two I can join a pro wrestling school...hey, we can't all be doctors! lol

I'd like to learn staff and sword. What I've seen of Wushu I really like, but am also partial to learning Aikido. In a combat situatio where it's down to hand to hand I usually just go non-linear on the opponent. You know feet, elbows, knees, forhead, teeth, fingers, all at once. Though I prefer t keep things from getting that close.

Well now, this is just a silly question...What do you think? Do you think I do martial arts? Being that I'm the all-powerful ninja board admin and all?

Hmmm maybe.

Yeah only backwards. I was the little brother who had three big brothers who loved to rough house with iddy biddy me, so it was a matter of survival. I come from a rough and tumble family. As for the ex-Marine brother, I learned pressure points and certain maneuvers...nothing as extreme as, say, killing someone with a looseleaf notebook.

Wow, I guess I should of checked the response to my question hahah! I did Kempo for 2 years. Taekwondo for 5 and earned a black belt. Now I use Bruce Lee's philosophy of Jeet Kune Do and don't think really think of myself as a black belt anymore because its lost it's meaning. JKD just builds yourself up to your own limitations and improves who you are. So I guess I've touched on a lot of other martial arts (like kali, wing chun, etc) to get the most efficiency out of them using JKD principles. Right now I'm also exploring the internal martial arts and energy manipulation. Did a snippet of Tai Chi and had a small intro to Pa kua (Jet Li uses it in the ONE).

so THAT'S what he used.. it's different from his other movies. (Romeo Must Die, etc.) I was wondering, but too lazy to look it up. My personal favorite was the Kali they used in The Bourne Identity. I wanna see a movie fight with Akido.... it rocks.

Btw, does anybody know what style Seraph used in Matrix Reloaded?

For your info, the Bourne was using Kali. It's a Philopino martial arts that specializes in stick and dagger. But when you don't use the stick and dagger, it works on destroying limbs (with elbow strikes). Its a very no shit style and fun to do. Hehe. I couldn't figure out the matrix. There was a lot of sticky hand and leg trapping. I know Collin Chou was stunt man in a lot of Hong Kong films. Jet Li was actually supposed to play the role but he didn't want to do both movies. Oh yeah and in the One, the bad Jet Li used Xing Yi, another form of internal martial arts (tai chi and pa kua are the other two).

Duh. I said that I liked it, not that I wondered what it was.. :P

I couldn't figure out the matrix. There was a lot of sticky hand and leg trapping.

I know there was such a combination of styles used in that movie... it's hard to isolate one in particular. But I was wondering if Seraph had one that he used exclusively.. but since he didn't script his fights, he might not have been able to use his own.

Btw, was it just me, or does Neo not know how to use a sword? That was the weakest moment in all those fights, IMO.

I used to take, what i'm assuming was moneyate, or would be karate, but just a school to teach you to punch. It was cool for awhile, but then after my leg went through a wall, my head dented a very large board, and my stomach was punched outside my body, i began to lose interest. That, and it was like $200 for my black belt test, and i didn't want me parents spending money so i can learn how to twirl a stick and prove to a bunch of old idiots that i can too.

The tissues filled up bloody noses, the spit mopped off the floor, the many times i hit my head, before i walked out the door.

Martial arts...my dad tried teaching me a little bit of stuff at an early age...he really didn't want to teach me but I insisted...he was afraid I'd use it in fights all the time.

Last year, my dad showed me some stuff. One of my friend's found this hilarious and laughs every time I mention it..or he mentions it or however the topic comes up. My dad was 72 or 73 last year (I'm not too sure about his age.. :? and don't say I'm a bad son, he was a bad father most of the time, I don't live with him, and he don't even know his own birth date for some reason, or so he claims)...he used his finger and poked me in my adam's apple really hard and said something like "well, it's supposed to hurt, what did you expect"...that was rude..I had trouble breathing after that and was choking sort of and he was just standing there watching me. And then after I calmed down a bit, he told me to hold one of his arms behind his back...then he threw me over his shoulder and I went flying onto the ground. My dad was really in shape for a guy in his 70s. He still had a 6pac last year and when he flexes, his biceps are huge and he's got veins popping out of his arms. He's one of those slim guys whose muscles are all...well you know...tight? :? compressed? Can't think of the right word. He's like 5'6" and only weighs 115 lbs and could kick a lot of people's asses a long time ago in the military and in fights and stuff...but back then he weighed more of course..he was in the military for like 10 years and knows a ton of stuff about building electronic stuff for emergencies or something...knows tons about guns and other weapons in general, etc.

Anyway, I wish I had the chance to learn martial arts when I was a kid. This friend of mines in high school - he knew this adult guy who took judo lessons in his 30s or something and in just 6 months, he broke all his fingers and his leg and some other body part I think. It sucks learning this shit at an older age :?

Wado aint that strong - there are yellow belts in my club better than black belts that do wado. Still its a martial art and its good though.
I've been doing kyokushinkai karate for 5 years now, im a 1st kyu brown belt just waiting until the time has passed and i am allowed to go for my 1st dan black (you have to wait a year after getting 1st to go for 1st dan) 4 hour grading to get first kyu, no rests, no breaks, just pure stamina, technique and will power. And lets not forget the week before me and my friend imogen came second in the national team tournament with half a team.

I love martial arts, we had a pe day once at school and we did judo for an hour. That judo teacher was bludy shocked when some little 12 year old had him on the floor after only 1 hour of judo training ;)

When I was younger, my next door neighbour was doing some sword stuff on the back lawn, any hows I bugged him like a 10 year old kid does and he began to teach me his art.
there was almost no combat oriented stuff there just meditational type stuff and a few different 'Kata' ( is that the right word?)
He never told me the name of what we were practising and it wasn't something that you could use in a confrontation,
but those moves, the frame of mind that I used to enter when repeating them, easily the most calming almost enlightening experiences of my life.
I owe a debt to Mr Reid for taking the time to set a young mind on a decent path.

More stamina, stronger, more accurate technique, fast technique and good dojo etiquette. I have a friend who fought a wado black belt when she had only been training a year, she won and the scoring was adapted for both styles.

This is Dojang/Dojo dependent. I have met a 2nd Degree black belt in TKD who has sloppy technique (such as always dropping his guard when he kicked or hanging his kicks), is disrespectful of higher belts, and seems to run by the philosophy of "if the lock doesn't work the first time, put more force into it." We had another 2nd dan and a temp black in TKD join us and they were the exact opposite: good technique on what you would expect, receptive to criticism and respectful of higher belts in the different martial art.

So there may be a lot here which is specific to the students of the teacher and not indicative of the art as a whole.

I have a friend who fought a wado black belt when she had only been training a year, she won and the scoring was adapted for both styles.

I distrust any kind of "we can beat them" system since the emphasis of schools can be so different and, in the end, "who beats who" proves nothing (take the meditative Tai Chi people as an example). In a ring using tournament rules I get slaughtered by TKD people. OTOH, if we take away the formality of the tournamen the situation reverses because my martial art is centered around self defense.

I'm pretty into it... I've been into it off and on since I was 8 years old. I taught for a little while too.

My thoughts on it are a mix of negative and positive. It seems like Martial Arts is slowly walking towards it's grave and "fighting" is taking over. Ground fighting / wrestling is getting really popular now. You know.. the cage fighting crap. They teach no moral value's, no honor, no discipline. All they teach is strike and break.

I taught Tang Soo Do for a little over a year and got into a HUGE on-going battle with my instructor. All he'd ever talk about is sex, strip clubs, etc... and he's married with 2 children. He's still sleeping around and from what I heard doing drug now... yet he charges 75 bucks to parents hoping that he can teach their kids discipline.

Basically anymore it seems anyone can earn a belt. Pay your money, get your belt. Doesn't matter who you are... and that's sad.

The true martial arts isn't about status, it isn't about winning or losing, and its not about belts. These things are all relative depending on how you were trained, where you were trained, and what kind of culture you were brought up in. The only universal factor is how you are able to develop yourself as a whole. I find it interesting on the progression of how people evolve in the martial arts. Most people start for self confidence, self defense, or just plain to "beat everyone up." But those that find the true meaning of the art, know it becomes something higher than that. Marterialism leaves and something else comes in. But that is up to you to discover because every individual path is different.

Yeah.. see the problem around here is that the ONLY remaining schools are Shotokan, Tang Soo Do, and Tae Kwan Do. It's mainly about belts. There was a Tai Chi and a Ninjitsu school going but they both recently shut down. TSD, TKD, and Shotokan are WAY too similar. Too mechanical too, and they don't let "you be you".

That's a point I always brought up. The one thing I'm tired of with instructor attitudes is that they try to turn you into them. Think like me, fight like me. I think that's very wrong. You're not supposed to make people like you, you're supposed to learn about them, and make them stronger them's.

Like me, I'm a passive fighter. If I'm in a situation I wait for somebody to make a move. My old instructor is active... and he's also a bully. So he'd try to turn me into one.. and it just wouldn't work.

I do Tai Shin Mun Kung Fu, I've been there for about eight months. Not so much lately though since I got a job few months back and it creates a bit of a timing issue. But I intend to continue, my job ends at the end of May.

My boyfriend got me into it, he's been doing it and other martial arts stuff for years. I really like it, I've been meaning to get into stuff like this for ages. One of the things that really intrigue me are the "hardening" exercises, if that's what you're supposed to call them. You hit certain bones with somebody else's bones and then massage them with this special oil and eventually you'll have really hard bones so you can kick the crap out of anybody :) It takes a lot of time, though, to get that far.

It has no belts or competitions or anything like that, we larn series of movements and when you've learn enough you eventually get a certain status and you can teach others. I kind of like that it's not that competitive and you can just do your stuff at your own speed.

FunkyChicken
05-01-2004, 11:17 AM
You're supposed to use oil after those exercises? Oops ;)

Also having no rank or competition allows you to focus on your training and not some piece of cloth. It's more effective that way :) And what type of martial arts is that exactly?

Here's a very short list of other martial arts that covers some of themore well known styles of karate out there, among other things. There's many different styles out there. I do Goju Ryu, which I enjoy, but I've been considering learning Kali. Only thing is, I'd have to give up Goju Ryu unless I wanted to get nowhere with both martial arts.

I did tae Kwon Do for 3 years- uh, made it to black belt. But i moved so much, i just quit all together, because different masters and stuff use different belts and...yeah, stuff. Its best to get acustomed to one master (or a few) at one place, ya know, so I just stopped.

It doesnt interest me that much anymore, either. I won a lotta trophies though. And medals.

You're supposed to use oil after those exercises? Oops ;)

Also having no rank or competition allows you to focus on your training and not some piece of cloth. It's more effective that way :) And what type of martial arts is that exactly?

Yeah, it's this massage oil, we call it medicine, though. It has some herbs and things, the recipe is a secret, I think. Smells a lot like curry :) It's supposed make the bruises heal faster. Somebody makes it back in Malaysia, the grand master of the whole show. He's actually coming here in a couple of weeks to teach us, I just won't be able to make it... :(

It's Kung Fu, I'm not sure if Tai Shin Mun is very known or popular around the world. Shaolin, I think is the most "common" type of Kung Fu. I really like TSM, it's kind of graceful and well, careful, but has these really powerful little moves. I don't know, I'm still learning :D But I seriously recommend it to everybody.

Plus, the boys who do it have reeeaaally nice butts :D

Whoa never saw this thread till now.

I do Tae Kwon Do. I really enjoy it, but I haven't been fighting tournaments as much at the moment coz of uni crap and all...I just don't have time to do the intensive tournament training:( So I guess I'm slacking off a bit.

I still really love it though. Martial arts are teh cool.

I used to do Tae Kwon Do, I stopped at Black Belt- i lost interest. Mostly the people.

Now, I play ninja and stealth games and learn how to break bone and torture =D

Psh, j/k.

Um, yeah, I used to do Tae Kwon Do in Texas, North Carolina, and a bit in Florida. Technically, I might be below or farther than Black Belt, because all the different places I went to had some different belt rank scheme going...

Hehe, one of the black belts (he's in his 30s now) did kick-boxing for a year when he was 15.

He decided to do Goju Ryu karate once someone snapped both his elbows in practice...

It's a style of karate. There are lots of styles. Goju Ryu is one of the main four styles of karate.

Goju means Hard/Soft, Ryu means Way.

It's heavily influenced by Chinese White Crane Kung Fu.

Kempo (or Kenpo depending on how you spell it) is fairly similiar to it actually from what I know

I do Tae Kwon Do, well now, for the moment, I don't because I got my ankle twisted and the ligaments hurt so I can't do any sport for a time.

I miss doing Tae Kwon Do, I do love it.

I'm a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. . . but I haven't been training for over 4 months since I just got in to Crew at my school. So I've forgotten a lot of things and lost a lot of my keenness.

I think I remember most of my traditional forms though, does anyone else do these forms? (I'm not sure about the spelling on a lot of them)

White Belt- Chun-gee
Gold Belt- Tang-goon
Green Belt- Tau-sang
Purple Belt- Yul-gook
Blue Belt- (Forgot this one)
Red Belt- (Forgot this too. . .)
Brown Belt- Fo-Rang (or something like that. . .)
Black Belt- Jai-Shin

I also do musical forms to Beethoven's 5th Symphony, Exodus, and Granada.

Besides musical forms we have combinations, various kicks and punches, grappling, sparring, self defense, submissions, and using sticks.

I took tae kwon do classes for about 3 months. It was more of a humiliation sessionn than anything else, with 2year old black belts beating me up every session. Cos you know, I'm not allowed to hit them

LOL! I know what you mean. I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and back in the day I was a little arrogant with it. Now I don't even consider myself a black belt or consider my status with a piece of cloth. Jeet Kune Do showed me a lot.

Oh and I'm sure there's plenty you can do while still injured. Remember, Bruce Lee recovered from his back injury even though no one thought he would and became a better fighter and philosopher from it.

What's humiliating is being a 7 year taekwondo practitioner and being schooled by someone with no martial arts experience who has been learning the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do for a few months. That's humiliation. (which is why I do that now :) )

That's odd, practically everyone I know who does martial arts (I'm talking about a huge range of MAs btw) isn't boastful about it at all, usually they're quite humble and honest about their skill level

I'm very realistic about my level and fighting skill, both in a controlled situation and in a street fight: I've only been doing Goju Ryu for about a year or so, I'm certainly no expert at it, and I need to work on my blocks in sparring in particular. I've been considering doing traditional jujitsu, or Kali Ilustrismo alongside my karate, although that could lead to a situation where I get nowhere with both very quickly.

The only Martial arts I know is Tai Kwan runna-wieh-doe :D I'm a passive kind of guy if thats any consolation.. Hope I spelt that right and if I didn't, theres a dictionary, prove me wrong. ;)

I am a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I should be testing in the fall for second degree. I've been doing it for 7 years now, since I was 12. I think martial arts is awesome and everyone should learn it so they know how to defend themselves.

I also know a staff (bo) form my dad taught me (he takes kung fu) and I have some training with eskrimas (Phillipino bamboo sticks).
