I just logged in for a few minutes, and it turned out I had just automatically logged out. While still browing the W&C forum. The gray box at the top was a "log-in" section, but I had not logged out. It kept on happening for a few minutes.
I just changed my password, so hopefull that's helping...
And then I try to rep someone and I come up with this message:
"You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
You are not logged in. Fill in the form at the bottom of this page and try again.
You may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation. "
Is it just a temporary bug in the system or is something happening to my account?

That happens to me sometimes when I'm on my sis computer. I think it's your cookies and internet settings. Try going to Tools-Options. Check security to see if its high. Lower the bar to medium. Play around with it. I hope that's helpful. :)

Yay, finally something techy that I understand. Thanx, I will try that. For a second I thought someone was being bored and decided to log me off at intervals just to piss me off....

I know exactly why that is happening. You become idle. First, enable cookies. Then, when you sign in, click on the box next to "Remember Me?". That should do it.;):D

The only reason is because I have think out loud before I post, so i don't sound like a complete moron, and some times it will error out and not post.

If you want to ensure that you don't timeout while posting, use the 'Preview Post' button every few minutes. I have to do that myself, as I often take more than 15 minutes for anything other than a quick message.

i never have seen a "keep me loggged in" option either....if there is one please tell me..
There's one... :)
I'm not sure if it's the way the site protects your identity or if it's just my computer but when I log in on my laptop it always remembers me, though when I log on using the computer it never remembers me even when I tell it too. Though like I say, that may be due to the site keeping my stuff private.
Just thought that might help on the subject your on.

The "Remember Me" check acts as a "keep me logged in" function here. I just couldn't remember which terminology EvBoard uses because I haven't actually had to sign in for quite some time.
I don't know why some of you don't get remembered. Maybe your internet security settings don't allow cookies, which is what EvBoard uses to remember you.

I...don't quite get it, though. I've never gotten logged off of EvBoard at any time...I'm not usually online at 2 AM (EST), but I haven't experienced any problems when I've been on at that hour.
eBay has a "Keep Me Logged In" check box, but it will log you out when you close the browser. EvBoard's "Remember me" check box just remembers you all the time.
The other message boards I go on have a "remember me" check, too, and they all work the same. This is what it says for that option on one of my other boards: "Remember me? If enabled, you will be automatically logged in again when you visit."
You seem to be saying that the 'remember me' is not as good as 'keep me logged in', but my experience has been the opposite. So I'm kind of confused right now.

So... I'm typing this reply earlier... and I'm quoting sources and I'm looking stuff up, and when I'm done, I hit the handy "preview post" button, to make sure everthing looks all nice and pretty, and I get evboard saying
"Hey guy, you aren't logged in, please do so now."
Sure.. no problem... here's my username, here's my password... and I get:
"You have followed an invalid link. Please send a message to the admin." [flushing sound]
All that work... gone.
Is there any way to prevent this from happening again?

I've been to many sites that have had both the "Keep me logged in" and the "Remember me" option. In my experience, there is not a set difference - as has been said, eBay has the "Keep me logged in" option, but it doesn't keep you logged in forever. MySpace has the "Remember Me" but that also (at least, from what I've seen) doesn't keep you logged in after you close the browser or log off the internet (if you have dial-up like I unfortunately do). But here on [e], I've always been kept logged in even after closing the browser or logging off the net.
I'm guessing it all depends on the site and how they keep their security options - I really don't believe that there's a set way of doing things, i.e., "Keep Me Logged In" always means one thing and "Remember Me" always means another.
I used to have problems with staying logged on here in the past, but then I realized that I didn't have cookies enabled, and it's worked ever since. Perhaps that could be the problem?
Also, if you delete your cookies/temporary internet files frequently, each time you do so you will have to re-login.

When I write a long post, sometimes it will tell me to sign in again when I'm done. I'm guessing that's to do with the page being inactive for more than 5 minutes. Can't say I've ever had a problem like yours.
I know it sounds stupid, but when I write a long post I copy what I wrote before I post it just incase something goes wrong.

It doesn't sound stupid; I do that too, hehe. Sometimes I even use a word processor if I know a post I'm writing is going to be extremely long. There's been times when I'd write directly into the message box, then hit backspace to delete something and instead would be directed to the previous page in the browser. After hitting the Forward button, all my work is lost. :(
But yeah, the best thing to do would probably be to take precautions like this. I don't really know what causes the time-outs, other than heavy traffic or what Carmen mentioned, but I'm unsure if there's a way to fix them.

If you guys look in the "thoughts about EvBoard" thread, we've discussed the timeouts. ;)
When you login, check the box that says "Remember Me," and it should keep you logged in and remember you when you return to EvBoard next time. If that doesn't work, your browser's security settings may be set to reject cookies. You can either allow EvBoard's or set your security settings lower to accept them.

xoust a thought..... i use internet explorer myself. IE is famous for locking up and causing said problems. (see my posting in thoughts about evboard thread)
i wonder if folks on opera or fierfox have the same issues ir if the problem has to do with IE being retarded???
Well, I'm an Opera user (been so for the past year), and I've never had trouble with staying logged in. I'm willing to bet that IE has something to do with it. Which is another reason why you should upgrade to a better web browser. OPERA FTW!!!

the fact that a moderator has to manually reset the timer by using the preview option would seem to indicate, at least to me, that there is no "keep me logged in "option.
I should clarify. I never get logged out of Evboard unless I do it manually. I closed this browser window and shut my computer down on August 28th, 2005 as hurricane Katrina was about to brighten my year with her blessings, and I plugged it back in and got back on Evboard as if though nothing had ever happend sometime in October, when my internet finally came back. I was still logged in like always. The 'Remember Me' box on this site is designed to make your cookie so that you don't have to log back in to the board unless you either delete the cookie or log out yourself. I also use Internet Explorer. The main thing I keep the current session alive for is because every thread on the board is marked as if though you've read it once you time out, as of your last activity time. I usually want the stuff that happened while I was posting to still be bolded and such, so that's why I use the preview post thing.

I have Firefox (with "Remember Me" checked) and the only problem I have with logging out is when I click on a link to another post. For example in the "Classic locked threads' hall of shame - Pt III" thread, clicking on any link to another thread logs me out in the new window.

Darn it.. I even searched before I made a new thread like a good user. Nuts.
Anyway... the cut-n-paste idea is a good one, and I never thought about using a word processor first... both good ideas.
I've tried that "remember me" box, so far as I can tell, it didn't do squat for me. My IE settings aren't restrictive about cookies, so I don't know why.
Good ideas though, thanks!

If this is really such a problem I'd suggest writing it in Wordpad or something beforehand, so you can have all the time you need. Or else copy it before hitting the "preview" button, so if it gets jacked you can just paste it back.
It's basically "enable cookies" and don't deal with it or "don't enable cookies" and deal with it. I can't recall a time where I've been asked to log back in with cookies enabled.
Once in a great while it'll try and eat my post for whatever reason; but I almost always copy lengthy posts before previewing, so it isn't an issue for me.

why then is it that myself and others get kicked out and have to log back in if i take more than 15 minuites to post?
My only suggestion is that anyone who has trouble with it is most likely experiencing a local issue with their browser/cookies. I've used evboard with remember me checked in several locations and it's always worked the same for me.

I agree with Machinehead. For what it's worth, here's some voodoo steps you might try:
Log IN to EvBoard
Click the link to Log OUT of Evboard.
Close the browser
Start the browser (but don't open evboard.com)
Delete all cookies related to evboard.com
Go to evboard.com and Log IN to EvBoard
Wait and see if this helps
It [the random log-out problem] usually happens because of those who are behind transparent rotating proxies that change between requests. If this is the case, there's nothing that can be done other than getting a new ISP.
Also, if you have more than one person logging in to EvBoard on the same computer, I highly advise you set up separate user accounts on that machine so that the browser history/cookies/etc/ are all cleanly segregated for each user. Otherwise, you're just asking for trouble.

Also for people using Firefox you can use the Profile Manager to create an additional user profile within Firefox if you don't want to bother with seperate Windows Profiles. Directions for doing this can be found here (http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile#new). You can even set up separate icons to launch Firefox in the appropriate profile.

If you want to check for a transparent proxy you can do so here (http://proxyjudge.org/prxjdg.antibot.cgi). If the IP Address of your machine doesn't match the REMOTE_ADDR field then you might be behind a proxy server (the othe alternative being you're behind a NAT router but odds are if you are you already knew that).

For those who like to compose their posts in a separate word processor, I found this nifty free utility called Fass.
Fass is a (f)orum (ass)istant, providing an enhanced, offline alternative to the post editor in forum software and an automated, template-based post generator. Features include: saving/loading drafts, post preview, 100 level undo/redo, menu and colour customisation, branding options for webmasters and much more. Originally designed for use with Invision Power Board, Fass uses standard bbcode that is compatible with most forum software.
You can download it from here: http://www.pawsoft.com/?p=fass/home
