I'd have to vote for SNES. It brought us some of the best games in history, especially for RPG fans. Early FF series, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Lufia 1 and 2, Tecmo: Secret of the Stars, Breath of Fire...

SNES or PS2 would be my top choices, I'd lean towards the SNES, you can't beat FFIII and Chronotrigger.
The NEO was a nice council, but it lacked games. I also like the Dolphin (gamecube).
The Xbox has very little to recommend it in my eyes.

Yeah, Squaresoft pwnz. I'd vote PS1 as a runnerup to SNES because of games like Chrono Cross, the rest of the Breath of Fire series, The remake of Ogre Battle, Xenogears, FF Tactics. I probably should have changed the topic to "Best RPG console". :P

I bought both the regular playstation and nintendo 64 a few years ago and really never used the nintendo so I got a PS2 so I could play my old games on the new one. Plus I love that it plays DVD's.

Super Nintendo. *_* Those were the days. Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Mario RPG... wow. I'm a huge RPG fan though, so I guess my opinion on that system is no surprise.
SNES all the way! The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is one of my alltime favorite games. Although the PS1 would come in a close second (since it has Suikoden 1 and 2).

COLLECOVISION! :P
No...
SNES...was the best.
My favorites was the Donkey Kong Country series, the Mario games, and NBA Jam Tournament Edition.
Also spent countless hours (more than a week if you counted the hours, probably) playing WWF Raw and WWF Royal Rumble.
Mario Kart...Super Bomberman 1 - 5 :D my cousins had the Japanese one, Super Famicon?, and a disk converter, where you put in those 3 1/2 floppy disks in to play games. We had the incomplete version of Super Bomberman 5 - I'm guessing the full version never got released :? I don't know tho. Cause the rom was the same. That was illegal in the US tho...
Donkey Kong Country 2 - that ice level. My fingers hurt a LOT cause I was mashing the buttons to prevent myself from slipping and hitting bees.
Some time ago, Electronic Gaming Monthly gave Donkey Kong Country for the Game Boy a not so good review :? cause it wasn't as fanciful with graphics or something?...I played the game at Kmart and liked it...
Super Nintendo, ALWAYS :D second, Nintendo 64, third Playstation series, and then the NES...Kirby and Mario on the NES was so fun with friends.
Nintendo 64 - it took me 2 - 3 years to get tired of Mario Kart 64. I played it last week too...still fun.
Playstation 2 - Smackdown series is the best. My game broke tho :( I'll have to send it in to THQ, hopefully they'll replace it cause I just bought it recently and traded in Smackdown 4 for it.
Whatever systems come out in the future can't beat the Super NES controller and its games...
Forgot to add...I played every wrestling game for the N64, and own every one but WWF Warzone and WCW Backstage Assault. Backstage Assault was fun for...a short amount of time.
Warzone was fun...me and my friends didn't know how to play...except for one of us. So we had trouble playing. I lasted 15 minutes in a handicap match  everyone was shocked I did so good. Fun times :D

Yeah, Bubble Bobble :D
I have Puzzle Bobble on my computer...it's like Bubble Bobble 1 and 2 I think haven't played it in a while...
I used to play this arcade game at a local ice skating rink (hockey..) with the same little dinosaur characters in Bubble Bobble. I can't remember the name of the game, but there were robots..
Also, that one Marvel game...with Captain America, uh, Iron Man?, forgot the other characters :? it was an arcade game, 4 players, side-scrolling game, you fought enemies on the way...you could fly sometimes over an ocean and stuff, it was REALLY fun. We played, all 4 of us, had to take turns too, and we got pretty far :D
It's a shame arcade games are getting less and less peoples cause of home consoles now. I read they might be getting rid of arcades in the near future - not in Japan and amusement parks tho obviously....I guess? Arcade machines are FUN. In 94, I played The Simpsons with my cousin at the arcade and Street Fighter...olllld version. Good times.
I used to love video games but not as much anymore. Only sports games mostly. But I'll always remember older games...

Well, I went for SNES because it had the best games on it EVER. I mean, me and some of my friends were sitting there switch-hitting Super Mario World just the other night. PS1/PS2 is ok. PS1 is what had the games, PS2 is just a fancy looking PS1 because about 85% of the games out for PS2 suck wang. Gamecube, as low price as it is right now, and has taken over in the console war since the price drop, doesn't have that many good games, but what good games is has is "Nintendo good." Xbox, there is a joke right there. All it has riding for it is Halo. And for this system about 95% of the games suck wang.
Here is something that shouldda been on the list. The GBA. That is the best system out right now.

ok, so it technically isn't a console, but the pc is and always will be the true gamers platform of choice.
After all, the pc is the only device that is able to evolve beyond its original capacity.
Sure, every once and a while a console will come out and outperform the pc for a while, but soon enough the evolution will continue and the humble pc willl pull away again, (six months seems to be about the time required)
Thank fully the intel/amd and the Nvidia/ati battles are always pushing the boundaries of performance and this my friends is why all of your favorite consoles will eventually be consigned too the cupboard while the pc will soldier on.

I like my x-box, but they do need some more great games for it. They have Halo, soon to have Halo 2, I enjoy my Spider-man game and Dead or Alive 3 has some awesome graphics, but I also don't do a lot of gaming(not a lot of time for it) so no point in me having multiple systems anyways. Maybe one day I will get a ps2, unless they are planning on coming out with a 3rd one soon in which case I should wait.
I just wish they made resident evil for x-box...damn nintendo having the market on that.
Nintendo is too kiddish for me to like it. They market most of their games(from what I see) towards the younger crowd.

So far, I honestly cant say which of teh next gen. consoles I like the best.
Gamecube has: METROID PROME!!!, Ikaruga and I much prefer the GC version of Soul Calibur 2, and the Rogue Sqadron series.
PS2 has: Ico, Final Fantasies, Silent Hill series(though the Xbox version of SH2 is better), Sky Gunner, Xenosaga.
Xbox has: Gun Valkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Halo.

I thought about it some more. The GBA is DEFINATLY the best system out there. They are making (or have made) SNES games on there AND it is portable. The GBA SP is back lit (effectivly), has a 10 hour battery with the light on (18 hour with it off) and takes 3 hours at most to charge up (Because it has a rechargable lithium-ion battery). The GBA has a higher percentage of getting a good game when randomly picking than any other system out there.
GBA is the massa of games.

Eh... while the PC almost always outdoes console when it comes to graphics and sound quality, what good does that do you when it rarely comes out with any decent games? With a few exceptions, most of the PC games I would want to play had already been available on console for months beforehand... x_x
But, again, I guess it's just a matter of taste.

The Xbox is by far the best, I mean take a look at Halo for a start. And Halo 2, sure it may look better on PC, but on an Xbox does it need to be installed? And it totally owns the PS2 and Gamecube in terms of hardware. I'd like to see Sony or Nintendo get Morrowind on either of their systems.

My vote goes for PS2 anyway, it is the best current console, but you could have at least stuck in some more of the 'classic' consoles into that poll...

o.o Yeah, what the heck. Add ALL options next time. Or at least a few more. Atari, Xbox, PSOne, PS2, Gamecube, SNES, N64, Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, Sega Genesis, NES, Gameboy, GBA, and lots more.
I vote on PS2. I dont like the XBox- It really doesnt have much more going for it other than Halo and Halo 2 as far as I see. Those're the only games I see getting good reps for the X Box. And infact, I'd like to see XBox get some big franchise games, like Resident Evil or Final Fantasy or even Zelda (Though GC has Zelda...) or Sonic stuff.
I also think the machine looks cheesy. Thats all. =| The PS2 has a wide variety of games...but i see the gamecube has childish games (aside from Resident Evil- Which is basically Gamecube's only claim to the Mature rating) and XBox has competitive games.
Bokuho
04-17-2004, 07:41 PM
Good point you raised there, with the GameCube and it having 'childish games'. Indeed, it's only even vaguely non-'kiddy' game are the Resident Evil games, and hey, even those are just slight updates form the original Playstation versions... it's sad that the GameCube's only good games are just re-hashes of games from other consoles - and the few 'original' good games it does have are also on other consoles or on PC too anyway. It's a shame, Nintendo used to be great, then after the SNES they just lost it....

On that thought- I loved the SNES. I still play FF2 and 3 on the SNES (I dislike loading times, so i often just play it on the SNES instead of PSX). And I never thought about that- The Gamecube does have a few games that are just rip offs/spin offs, or complete remakes. Heck, the GC's only original Resident Evil is Zero and that didn't even sell well. Then you have these Metroid things and...blah- I think that if the GC is gonna just refurbish games from other consoles, it should make a GTA for GC. =|

I agree on all counts... Shouldn't have left out so many systems. I also voted for PS2, but I really like Gamecube too. True that most of its games are remakes of old ones, but a lot of those are still fun, and I'm sure they made many improvements (with the exception of the new Mario Party games). And you can't forget Super Monkey Ball! That's not a remade game (as far as I know), and it's awesome.

Well, if GBA was on the list, then I would say that, but since it isn't I went with GameCube. GC has a GBA adapter which you can play all the GBA games on. Some of the greatest games were on SNES and either have been or are being remade for GBA.
GC doesn't JUST have kiddy games. If you would actually look for them, there are other games out there, and if you open your mind you will realize that most of the games that which you view to be "kiddy" are actually really fun games, so up in ya.
I guess some people just haven't heard of Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Eternal Darkness, Ikaruga, or any of the Nintendo Franchise games. The only possible way that GC could be any better is if it played DVDs, but since they use the minidisks, it can't do that, which is fine by me. The DVD player is one of the only reasons that I have a PS2. Hell, its one of the reasons that PS2 is doing so well in Japan! The cheapest DVD player in Japan translates from yen into about 400 to 500 dollars where the PS2 is right around 150 to 200.

Heh.. bad me for not responding to the "kiddy games" thing before. I definitely agree. Just cause they're bright, colorful, and cutesy doesn't mean they're not fun for adults too! Super Monkey Ball, Bomberman Generation, Smash Brothers Melee... all cute, all FUN. And yes, lots of remade games, but this isn't a bad thing, since they're classic and even improved.
And how could I forget Eternal Darkness! I loved that game, although I only ever watched my boyfriend play it. I was too scared to play it myself! -_-

Well, GC does have a modem and broad band adapter, but not many games use it other than Phantasy Star Online.
I just wish that Megaman Anniversary Collection would hurry the fuck up and come out. First it was supposed to come out 4/5, then it go pushed back to 5/20, now it is pushed back till 6/22. I think I am going to go fucking insane cause I can't wait for this game.
Also I would like to add to my list of likes for the GC is the Wave Bird controller. No other system has a first party wireless controller, and all the other systems have 3rd party wireless controllers that are ass and cost twice the amount of the Wave Bird. The WB lasts on 2 AA batteries for right around 40 to 60 hours, although the package says 100 hours, but it may last that long, just the batteries that come with it are crap.

Seriously? Wow..
I know they sell a GameCube that plays DVDs. It looks tight but it's about $500.
http://image.lik-sang.com/images//large/panasonic-gamecube1.jpg ($489 according to lik-sang)
(now I can give insight on the Gamecube :p)
I bought a GameCube last...February I think? Two months ago? It was weird. I bought at least 15 games but sold about 5 and lost around $200 total. Not very smart, and I'm not very good with handling money, am I :p
The games are okay. A lot more kiddy games, but they do got mature games as Trogdor pointed out. Personally I like the Gamecube better (maybe that's just cause it's newer and cause I've had my Playstation 2 for 3 years or somethin)..I say the XBox doesn't have the best games but it looks great, no doubt. Playstation is still the reigning console I believe..(today)
I still think the best of all time is the SNES, simply cause it had a lot of games (okay so maybe not as much as the Playstation?) and it was THE SHIT at its time. I remember playing NBA Jam, Mario Kart, Mario All-Stars, Bomberman, Donkey Kong...the most. Great games. NES, Kirby and Mario. Those was good times. They are actually releasing a limited edition NES looking Game boy SP? and re-releasing 5 games I think such as Duck Hunt and the original Donkey Kong out for $20 each for the Game boy SP. That looks like it might sell well, simply for the fact that it's retro..:)

@Cyra: yeah, I have seen the DVD playing GC but it is by Panasonic, not Nintendo, so who knows how well it works. Plus from what I understand, it is made only in Japan and is region locked (won't play American games).
In Japan, they released a Famicom looking GBA SP.
They are releasing at least 7 classic nintendo games for the GBA coming up soon: Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Ice Climber are the only ones that I can remember though.

Yeah, Panasonic, but from what I've read on lik-sang it's good, but on other sites like IGN it's not worth it unless you're rich. I didn't know it was region locked for American games. However, it can play DVDs of any region I think (which is why some people purchased it, just for that..)
Yeah..I wonder if anyone will buy them tho (as in will they be a success). Today's generation really has no patience for old school games and they're spoiled with all these new graphics and huge storylines and complex controls and stuff..(or maybe I'm just stupid ;))

Thing to remember about video game consoles is this:
For Graphics : Gamecube

However, my brother got a gamecube for Christmas, along with the Legend of Zelda games.
Now, I am THE most game console-illiterate person in the world. But I can operate the Gamecube controller with no difficulty. Not to mention that I  the Zelda games lol. SUCH good games :). I cannot operate the XBox controller at all. Too many buttons and levers; it's so confusing.

Awesome. I have the SNES versions of Donkey Kong, Yoshi's Island, and Super Mario World for my GBA :D How would Duck Hunt work on the GBA? I can't imagine a gun being sold... but it wouldn't be the same without a gun!

I'm really into the old-school games so I love my SNES....but if I had to pick what's the best console its my PS2..cause it has such great graphics, you can play PS games on it, and there's no need to buy extra equipment for DVD's

It will be played with a target that you move with the D-pad then more than likely shoot with the A button.
Also I just looked it up and I was mistaken about the Panasonic GameCube. Apparently it plays both Japanese and American games and you don't need a Free Loader. Also it plays Region 1 thru 6 DVDs and has multiple audio and video settings on the system itself.
If I was rich, I would definatly have to check one out.

That's a pretty tough question ...
I'd say the SNES because I kind of grew up with that system. And my fav games are on it. My fav game of all time if FF6, then Secret Of mana, Zelda, Mario, StarFox, SF2, etc
After that I'd say the PS1 because of Castlevania - SOTN, Metal Gear and FF7 and GT1-GT2
Last is the PS2....with GT3.
Note that I love my Dreamcast as well.....Tons of (burnt?lol) games. It's a hardcore gamers system.
Nintendo has been weak since the SNES. I own every of their consoles but....nah.... it's not for me apparently.

This is an old thread but where is the gameboy? I have all of them except for the sp. I liked the sega genesis because it has Nights, but for the current generation I'll have to say Gamecube. It has the best games, Zelda, Metroid, Eternal Darkness, Super Monkey Ball, Super Smash Bros., and many many others.

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Amazing game
This title on Xbox is a bad shadow of the 1995 classic Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. It's like Morrowind, only better... if you forgive the fact of it's graphics, but in 1995 they were pretty damn good graphics. So for the Elder Scrolls series PC (not even a console) takes winner. :p
I love the Playstation series. It was an amazing break in graphics and redefined the level of games altogether. NES was the big break of it's day and then some one got the idea to stick two NESs together and the SNES was born, yay! Oddly Sony has taken an odd queue from the idea of sticking two consoles together, and pushing it over the top with their To Be Released system, sticking not two, not three, but a shit load of them together!
If Sony were a girl I'd... wait there are minors on here...

I thought Sony did that with 9 PS2s to make playstation equivalent of a cluster computer. What were they even trying to accomplish with that? I read the article like a month after the PS2 came out in a PSM or OPM, one of the two.

I've got Fusion downloaded, but haven't played it, I heard that Zero Mission was much better. I have the actual game of Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced on the SP. I have 295 missions complete right now (5 away from getting Cid).
The only reason that I use ZSNES is because it came in a zip file with FF6 (which I have yet to play much of). I had the game for PSX when it was released in FF Anthology, but didn't play much of it then.
I really want to get a PS2 to USB controller adapter so I can use my PS2 controller on my computer. Here is a link to it if anyone is interested in getting it, its only about 10 bucks:
I would have to say ps2 and xbox, cause theres more range of games on the ps2, but xbox has a hardrive and more controller ports.

well, I like a few of them for different reasons.
I used to have the regular nintendo, and that was the shit! before it stopped working... awww
then i got a sega and played really cool games like the haunting and of course, sonic! (im a girl)
I have a PS1 - I have enjoyed the games I had for it such as Tony Hawk, Dave Mirra and FF8 but i found it to be difficult.
Along came Gameboy and i was all into the pokemon - who wasn't, then that got old
I dont have any of the newer consouls, however i love PS2 (when it works) because I am a Tony Hawk FREAK and i love the games for it.
However, i can't stand X-box because of the 25 buttons that do 25 different things like make you look one way while walking another... i think it sucks. Especailly Halo lol. Sorry guys, i cant stand it. :o

What I think is funny is that lots of people complain that the X Box has "too many buttons" when infact it has exactly the same number of buttons as PS2.
PS2 has :R1 and 2, L1 and 2, X, O, triangle, square, start and select
Box has : R, L, White, Black, X, Y, A, B, Start, and Back
Both have 2 sticks and a digital pad.
The "fatty" XBox controller is kinda bad because you have fucking bear hands to hold it. There is a smaller controller that is a lot better IMO out called the "S Type" controller.
My favorite controller is still the Wave Bird for GameCube. Next favorite is the PS2's controller in at a distant second.

the best console EVAR will be PS3. not just because it's the newest but because it will be EXTREMELY hard to beat it. i have an xbox. but you have to modify it to burn cd's. fuck modification!! with PS3, cd burning comes standard, as well as in internal hard disk, ethernet connection, ps2 and ps1 games compatibility, THE WORKS!!! not to mention TEH CONTROLLER. it's so comfortable and has basically remained the same during the first 2 generations. the processor is INSANE!! i forgot how many bits it spits out but i remember reading about it and going WHAT THE FUCK!!! *jaw drops*. i can't wait. i heard it's gonna be like $600+. better start saving!!!

It's happened to me a few times where I'm down by a few points and then I get a 3 pointer at the last second and..WIN THE GAME :D I got a lot of memories with that game, it's one of the games I've played the most ever besides wrestling games and Bomberman...and Mario Kart 64.

Yeah, we had a debate on the PS3 in the Final Fantasy thread a long time ago. I don't think they are going to be able to pull off half of what they say they are going to do with it. They said that the speed is going to be something fucking insane like between 100 and 500 GHZ. There is no way they can do that cause the fastest processor known out right now is between 3.4 and 3.6 GHZ.
Then, just because it is all beefed up, it doesn't mean that the games will definatly be good on it. If the system is going to cost 600 bucks itself, game companies are going to be hesitant to make games for it because they may not get any profit because not many people would own the system.

well, i'm not gonna go with any of the poll options. when i first saw this thread i thought i was refering to current consoles. we'll here's my opinon and breakdown.
Xbox
it is well known (i think) that xbox is more powerful in performance than ps2 and gabecube. MS really did their homework before they put this one out on the market. if you look at games that span all the current platforms (the same game on ps2, gamecube and xbox) the xbox is far more superiour. ti comes with a hard drive, no memory card required unless you wanna share with your friends. it comes online play ready, although a credit crard and a periphial is required. xbox really tries to sell it's online capabilities. it's good to play together i think the xbox is great if you wanna play the console online. but the damn thing is still pricey $129 or $179 < with out of the box online play.
PS2
sure it isnt as powerful performace wise as the xbox but the sheer mulititude of titles surpasses that meager detail. you won't see ffx on an xbox. gt3 and vice city came out first on ps2. yes you can get online but you gotta spend a lotta extra cash to be able to do so. recently with the introducion if it's HD, which is a little pricey (if you include the price of the ps2 consoles itself with the price of the HD and the network adapter you have to buy aswell) sony is trying to push it's capabilities with downloads, memory card saves and such. in short if it's a game you want to play it's probably gonna be on the ps2. the ps2 compete with xbox as pricing goes. you can even find ps2 on ebay for $99
Game cube
GC is way down on the list in terms of hardware performace. the damn thing doesn't even play dvds. but the inclusion of it's nintendo only titles will make it a must buy for fanboys. besides it's ubercheap. it's only $99 US. you won't see windwaker and mario on ps2 or xbox. GC is last on to the race of onlineness. many of their titles do not promote online play.
PC
i'm not gonna get into this much. I've noticed with the new games you need an uber pc just be able to play these new games. yes the PC does have good tiltles and excellent online capabilities, but if your willing to shell out the large amouts of cash. cash not only for the games but for hardward specs and such. i mean c'mon do you really play everquest with the minimun requirements? so in order to enjoy the game you gotta buy $500 video cards and overclock your pc. i feel like these all the new pc games that have yet to come out (doom 3) will require large amounts of proccessing speed and top of the line graphics cards. it almost seems like they do it just so you'll have to buy the next generation graphics cards.
i still do to play emulated nes and snes games for nostalgic purposes. ahh i remeber those days. it's like my dad with pinball.
Azlex
04-23-2004, 05:11 PM
I don't think consoles should have online stuff on it, that is what a computer is for. A person must already have a computer to get online with any system, you can't just plug up a phone line and be good to go.
Xbox can only get online via broadband modems, sorry dial up people.
And jux, i think you are a bit mistaken on the hardware specs. The GC is more powerful than the PS2. Sony makes their own graphics cards, but Nintendo has ATI making theirs, while Microsoft has Nvidia making theirs. The GC has a faster processor than the PS2 as well.
Why does everyone burn on the Cube for "not having good games" when it just lacks GTA games and a mass quantity of RPGs? I never really understood the infatuation of those GTA games anyway. I didn't really like them at all.
jux
04-24-2004, 12:45 AM
you may be right, i don't know the exact specs. i probably have it mixed up with quality of the graphics. in my opinion GC has more family friendly titles, but they do have a great games, particulary windwaker, metroid prime, mario kart, mario sunshine to name a few. games that unfortunately won't make it onto other consoles. unless of course nintendo pull's a sega.
Azlex
04-24-2004, 01:53 AM
Nah, Nintendo will never pull a Sega. Nintendo has been around since the late 1800s making card games. Everyone knows who Nintendo is and it doesn't seem Nintendo's momentum is slowing anytime soon. Also, last I heard since the Gamecube's last price drop, GC was leading in the console wars. That is consoles sold, not based on games sold. I haven't checked that in a while though, its been a couple of months
Cyra
04-24-2004, 02:02 AM
Yeah, around Christmas time, the sales for the Gamecube were much higher than those of the Playstation 2's and Xbox's. I think they sold around 500,000 Gamecubes, don't remember entirely..but it raked in a looot of money for Nintendo thanks to I'm guessing that Mario kart Double Dash game. I was one of the few who bought it and didn't like it apparently..traded it to EB games for 20 dollars store credit. I hate trading in games (which is why I do more research now so I won't lose money again..like the $200 I lost due to trading in/selling last month)

just thought i'd mention this (since this is mostly about more retro stuff)..i got the Namco Arcade Classics TV Games Video Game System today. $18.77 at Wal-Mart, not too bad. Pac-Man, Rally X, Galaxian, Dig Dug, and Bosconian. pretty fun actually, except when you hit the Reset button by accident. they did an alright job bringing this back since all you do is plug the A/V cable into the tv and put 4 AA batteries in. it doesn't beat any systems but it's a contender i guess somewhat :D just for the fact that it's got great classics on it that makes is retro.
but still, the SNES was the one mainly for me..

There are a few new consoles to add into the mixes that were announced at E3.
First off is the PSP, this is a hand held gaming machine from Playstation. It seems that it has more hardware "wows" than software. It is an mp3 player and all kinds of stuff, but the only decent game that I have seen that is to be released on it is Metal Gear Acid. The screen is quite large and the graphics look great. Not sure of the price of this.
Nintendo is kicking it with more hand held systems. They announced the DS, which stands for Dual Screen. This is aimed more for new gamers that are afraid of playing due to all of the buttons on other systems. The bottom screen is touch sensitive and comes with a stylus, this makes for some really new and cool games. The way the games are done is on a cartidge with the technology to fit more than 1 gig of information onto one cartridge. This technology is also less expensive than previous cartridges. This system is also rumored to have a digital camera built in. One of the games that I know of is a version of Metroid Prime, and everyone knows how good that looks. I think that this can play Gameboy and GBA games as well, not certain on that though. This is going to retail for 199.99
Nokia is making another mistake in remodling their N-Gage which was a super flop last year. I haven't heard of anything good about it other than that it is going to be 20% smaller than the previous model, which is good because it doubles as a cell phone and the other one looked plane goofy held up to your ear.
Now for the new console entering the console wars, The Infinium Phantom. This system sounds pretty neat so far. The system will cost about 200 bucks, but to play it, it will cost 30 bucks a month, a huge drawback to any system. All the games will be played by access from the internet. The games will download to your system on command, then you can play them. The pros: can play games early and don't have to go anywhere to get them. Cons: must have internet access; monthly payment for playing. Doesn't sound like this will do that well on the market, but here is a link for anyone who is interested:

i think i've heard of that Infinium Phantom in EGM if it was like a year ago (i stopped subscribing like..well a year ago)..expensive..i like how when you put the mouse over the parts of the sites the water is all wavey and a nice blue..T_T ok back on topic.
those handheld systems...some mad prices. people are going to have to be some hardcore or rich gamers to be buying them, along with the Playstation 3 if it is really going to be $600. if enough good games come out then i may purchase one and if i have the time in the future, but aside from that...uh, no.
i'm still waiting for that NES version of the Game Boy SP or whatever. i've been playing that Namco thing tonight and the Sonic Mega Collection, and those older games are by FAR better than today's games, aside from the DDR/Eyetoy and some sports/RPGs mostly. many games are just garbage today.

Well, I'll tell you one thing: every single system since the Nintendo 64 has had racing wheels.
I would also like to comment that PS2's DVD player pisses me off because it alters the volume of the DVDs. Some DVDs it doesn't mess with the music sound, but all the sound effects and dialouge are turned way down. Other DVDs it turns everything down.

Yeah, I don't like the PS2's DVD player but I didn't have any other choice at the time..about a year ago.
You had to go through the setup while playing the DVD and change the volume to +1 or +2, and that would only make it have a lot of static, even tho the volume was louder. It was really annoying. It did that for pretty much all my DVDs I think..you had to have a stereo system hooked up to it in order to have "working" sound. And if you used the A/V cables with the VCR the video would be messed up. I don't know how to fix it but when we got a new tv, I just put all my consoles on video 1..everything worked better. Just experimented I guess.

is there a way you can upgrade it without buying a mod chip? i really need to know. My PS2 doesn't even have a menu that you can change the volume. I only have language, time, screen size, digital out (optical) and component video out.
it says my version information is:
Console SCPH-30001 R
Browser 1.20
CD player 1.20
PLaystation Driver 1.10
DVD player 2.10U
how would i go about upgrading that?
Well Eli, you have a first edition ps2 system first of all... like wow. What you need to do is go out and buy a new ps2... my idea was not to upgrade your existing ps2.. (as without using a mod-is not possible) it was to buy a new one and... the rest I cannot say outloud. ;)

Duude, what model do you have? That's just crazy, and I've never heard of that. :/ I should cry for you, because that seriously sucks. You may want to look into upgrading that baby if you have a chance <can tell you some neat tricks on how to go about doing this ;)>
I like how the new ps2 have stuff like progressive scan, DVD playback enhancements, and reduced fan noise. It's almost like... a DVD player.. .. only not.
wow, a lot of trouble to upgrade oO (kind of) maybe if you buy the remote control it will upgrade something? it comes with a disc of "drivers"..it takes a few minutes to install.
uhh, no clue what model i got..i just ended up buying a sony dvd player for $100 like 3, 4 months ago and it works fine. i like the feature of when you hit the stop button, it resumes where you left off even after you've turned the dvd player off for days...and regardless of whether you switched dvds, it still saves the memory of that one dvd..:D (talking about the sony dvd player..if this was in the ps2, that'd be nice..)
y gracias, but i don't even play my ps2 much anymore aside from Eyetoy and Smackdown. i play the Sonic Mega Collection on my gamecube now and pac-man, dig dug, and bosconian a lot again :D these new games suck, i'll just go with the retro stuff...:) and i didn't even know the ps2 is that much upgraded now. it's $149 now i think, saw a commercial. about damn time.
i hope the ps3 and stuff won't have stupid dvd players like the ps2's. the thing is, if you don't have a tv with audio/video jacks and have to use a vcr, you can't get good picture quality..it changes from regular quality to funky red and then...it's weird. no clue how to fix it, has something to do with the input/line stuff. that stuff is confusing.
and Eli, yes, do what Fallen Angelia says, quick, fast, now, hurry...yours is sooo outdated =P

The sony-made DVD remote won't help you. to use it you need to own one of the newest models (ver.10 and maybe 9 aswell) which has the infared sensor built in, otherwise it is useless.
As for not having audio-video jacks, there isn't much you can do. buying the sony-made RF-unit is the best way to go, the third-party noname (madcatz etc.) brands use cheap parts and give you crap picture quality. other than that, the oldschool connection you are using (called RG59) on your TV is not capable of transferring a very high-quality picture no matter what you plug into it :(

in that case, i must have one of the newer models?...i got mine's in i think 2001 or 2002.
yeah, RF adaptars suck compared to A/V cables. i don't know much about it at all, but i bought a Monster 3? S-video cable. i think it's just plugged into the tv/directv and not the game consoles..i have one of those things where you hit switch 1, 2, or 3 and there are different A/V cables in each one. much more convienent.
all these versions give me a headache haha...i remember hearing about ps2's would completely break if you dropped it and stuff, into pieces...and the cd drive would get stuck..i was hesitant to get one until i got a hook-up in new york and got one for $100 a few years ago so :D they really need to find some way to make the picture quality better in the tvs...but then again, they probably already know how to do so which is why we have so many optional expensive cables that improve the picture quality, along with plasma screen tv's. it's madness, and they're just ripping us off like bush with his mad gas prices. damn them all..

Well, I am sure there is a way to upgrade them. I bought mine used and never had a problem out of it. A lot of the first edition ones that I have heard of had a problem with the laser-eye so you had to crack the system open and readjust it.
Also, I have no cash for a new PS2, plus I don't really think it is worth it since all I use it for is a DVD player, I only have about 3 games for it.

You can slightly fix your existing ps2, nope you cannot upgrade it. Yes you can crack open your baby, hope for the best, and don't forget nothing you upgrade it with is Sony, meaning you don't really know what you're getting. Yes you can upgrade your laser, but it's not easy and if you happen to fuck up... oops, there goes your system warranty.

Cracking the system open is voiding the warranty. I don't even have a warranty on it since I bought it used. I did some searching and found out that you can upgrade the DVD player by buying the PS2 remote with the plug in remote eye. It comes with a disk to upgrade the drivers, but you have to have a free memory card so that it can save them on there. The DVD is the only thing that I ever use my PS2 for anyway, so whenever I get some money, I will prolly just get that.

Normally PS2 lovers will make the "better games over better graphics" claim. Actually, the Gamecube has better graphics and processing power than the Ps2. Check the specs.
As for me, once again I say: the PC still owns all. (If you can afford it;) )
-------------------------
As for the modders above, are there any Xbox:D modders on the board? I modded mine last summer with an Xecuter lite chip (almost nuked my motherboard while trying to solder the 9th wire  ). I also put an 80 GB hard drive in to hold all the apps, media files, and games I ripped to it. The region-free DVD app rocks almost as much as the game-ripper.

You can get a warranty put onto your system by calling Sony. Also, what you described with the remote, doesn't really qualify as an upgrade.

True, on paper the specs are much better. They should be considering ps2 came out well before Gamecube, and therefore Nintendo had the luxury of upgrading the standard that Sony had set. Anyways, I think what XvalospoisongrlX was trying to say, so far as graphics go, is that Sony usually releases games that are more realistic looking, where as Nintendo leans towards a more cartoonish look (which often ends up looking like upgraded n64 graphics).

I should personally beat your friend:p . Hasn't "bothered" to fix it in a year?! Sheesh. Eh, that's what you get for using a Xbox instead of a PC. Well, I guess Fable, Soul Caliber, and DOA3 are legit reasons;) . Come to think of it, it's really a shame that Fable isn't being released on the PC. I mean, almost ALL rpgs are normally for the PC... so it's not like there is no market for it. Also, high-res graphics (1600x1200? tasty :) ), faster framerates, and modability(custom designed faces, skins, weapons, etc.) would make that game OWN on the PC. Shame.

xbox is the worst out of all the systemsNow I shall have to personally give YOU a beating. WORST system?! Read: Halo, Halo 2, Fable, KOTOR, Sudeki, Jade Empire, Ninja Gaiden, DOA3, DOAU, and countless others. Not to mention that Doom 3 and Half Life 2 are being ported from the PC to the Xbox ONLY. (Although the graphics will have to be tuned way down from the PC.) The reason for this is not because idSoftware and Valve are Xbox fanboys lol, but because the Xbox has SO much more power and many more capabilites than the other 2 consoles. Other than Tekken and Final Fantasy, I see no reason to even bother with a PS2, or with a Gamecube save for Zelda. The Xbox, in my opinion, wins even if it's UNMODDED. Now with a modded Xbox, you can have movies, high quality MP3 rips, emulators, and pretty much anything want on your HDD. It's just like a media center PC... only with Xbox games.
But, argh! Why am I, a PC user, getting invovled in petty console wars. Tsk Tsk;)
Azlex
05-22-2004, 01:52 AM
Well, ok, let me rephrase that. If you have all of the systems, then the xbox is the worst out of all of them. The only games that you mentioned that will ONLY be on the box are Fable, the DOAs, and Ninja Gaidan. I can live without all of those. Fable, I thought it was pretty cool when I first heard about it; however, that was back at the xbox launch. DOAs were cool, but I'm not really into fighting games, however those are the best that I have played. Ninja Gaidan, I played thru the first level and it was kinda cool, but I lost interest quick. There are very few games that are on ONLY the xbox that aren't on another system or on the PC.
Not true, the Game Cube could handle it, I mean, it doesn't have an ATI card in it for nothing! The reason these games are on the ONLY the xbox is because Microsoft has a license to those games, thus, they are the only ones that can put it on console. Power has nothing to do with it yet. I agree with what I saw on G4 the other day. A person said "a system's optimum performance isn't seen until near the end of the console's life." Remember back when Playstation games had neat looking things like Gex? That was no where near the greatest that it could do, but at the time, we thought it was the greatest. Near the end of it's life, games with great graphics started coming out like Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy 8 which blew the hell out of Gex's graphics, so if history repeats itself, we haven't seen half of what these systems can do yet.

Well, I would look up some new info dude. That stuff you just linked was 2 years old!
The PS3 will not come out anytime between now and the next E3 or else they would have had some sort of prototype at this year's E3. So I am expecting that system to come out in about 2 to 3 years at the earliest. PS2 isn't spent yet and they are going to get as much money out of it as they can.

o.O But how many ppl will buy PS3 when it first comes out? x.x I for one, wont right away. I'd wait a year, or 6+ months.
Im still gettin used to the PS2 and Gamecube- not that im still caught in old times with the SNES- but I dont see the PS2 as all that old. I still play many many good games on it- and I think some of the games on the PS2 are as good as id like them. I dunno, but for some reason, even when PS3 comes out, I'll just stick with the 2 for a long while after...

Yeah, the PS2 is long from dead so I don't expect the PS3 anytime soon. Hell, the PS1 isn't dead yet. They are still making new games for it all the time. The Final Fantasy games on PS1 are all down to right about 20 bucks or less now and that is great for 2 games in one pack.

I'm going to start taking hostages until they start some freaking production. I knew that stuff was old but most of it was still good, but the disk size may have changed? The very first system they had shown at an electrionic convention in like 2000 or 1999 was a huge ass cube shaped thing. It was bigger than my television at the time.
SNES made the best games. Now people are just trying to make a visually pleasing game. Devil May Cry 2... What the hell was up with that story?! It didn't make sense! Man, I still crack up when the old FF characters flip out, that is freaking hilarious.
Edit: Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
Edit 2 (The Sequel): I just realized Xbox wasn't even a choice in the poll. Now that is a bias survey.

I know what you are talking about I think. They were doing some work with networking PS2s together to make a cluster. I think they had about 9 PS2s in the cluster.
Well, now in other news; I got Metal Arms: Glitch in the System the other day and it is really cool. All kinds of blowing things up and robot parts blasting all over the place. It's on all of the consoles and is down to 20 bucks now. Check it out people!

The PS2 is better because of its audio capabilities. True, the X Box has full Dolby(R) Digital playback even during gameplay whereas the PS2 only has it on cut scenes. But the PS2 has an optical digital output for dts(R) sound which the X Box has nothin' on. dts(R) or Digital Theater Systems, is a very amazing surround sound develepment company and like I said, the PS2 is the only system with that. Also, there are many games out for the PS2 and now with the addition of the 40GB Hard Drive (which also comes with Final Fantasy whatever) it now has more storage than the X Box.

Um, there's no NES in that poll. Or XBox. Or Dreamcast. And there aren't any of the old Atari systems listed either - those rocked, given the time they were made. My vote goes for PS2 anyway, it is the best current console, but you could have at least stuck in some more of the 'classic' consoles into that poll...
I agree, because my brother has a Dreamcast, and I like to play the old Sonic on it, except you can't save...that's a big drawback. Out of the ones up there, probably PS2 and then Gamecube.

Got news for ya buddy. I just checked and GC also has Digital AV Output. Also the Xbox is the only system that actually utilizes the capabilities of an HDTV, added to the Xbox's 5.1 surround. PS2 has a couple of games that does, but Xbox as a system does. And you say that the the PS2 has a bigger harddrive than Xbox, that is cause you have to spend 100 bucks on it. Sure, you could modify your Xbox and get a much much larger hard drive for it for the same amount it would cost for just the hard drive for PS2. The PS2 also has games that make it almost required to have the HD to play. From what I understand, Resident Evil Outbreak is almost unplayable without the HD because without the game saved on the harddrive, it has about 2 minute long loading times.

AMIGA!
I had a Amiga, Megadrive, PS1, N64, GBA and i own a PS2. Sure with PS2 you have all the fancy graphics and special effects but Amigas rock do doubt about it. You have Frogger, Pacman, Donkey King (Donkey Kong rip-offs) and loads of other cool games and i'm not on about the crappy remakes on the ps1 with more than 5 colours. AMIGA POWER!

Uh, obviously I put them there accidentally when the thread was first started, or they wouldn't be there.
I think it was when the site got changed from the old board to this one is when all the poll results got switched up to some weird choices. Like some polls about, ie favorite sodas, would have choices like, 'armpit' and 'dogs.' Weird but anyways I remember there wasn't no 'yes' or 'no' choices but other ones, I think.
And hey, video games can't die so why should this :p

I would have to say PS2. They seem to have the best games, and the easiest controllers to use. I can't believe I neve saw this thread before.

I like ps2 better than any other console unless if I don't know much or anything about other consoles. Gamecube is the 2nd best

I would have to say Gamecube. Only because of the Zelda series. PS2 comes in at a close second because of DDR though.

My vote goes to PS2. My friend owns one and I love the graphics and controllers. The ability to also play DVDs doesn't hurt either.
I own a GameCube. Graphics are also very nice, but the severe lack of games available for the console is very disappointing.

I think the best console is the xbox 360,but I also love the ps2 and it has some of the best games and series.

I'd have to go for PS2 and SNES, along with the classic Nintendo system because of the classics they brought. PS2 brought some breathtaking games and provided us gamers with an amazing experience. It's wide range of games also makes me chose it over X-Box or Gamecube. X-box usually features a wide variety of sports games over other generes, and Nintendo feaures games with its original characters, and are these are sometimes too "cartoon-y" for my likes. PS2 has games of all geners, making it very diverse and the DVD playing feature is very nice too.

Well the PS2 deffinately has had a longer life than the xbox and GC, and it does extremely well holding down the fort now that the X360 is out and PS3 is still in development.
I also loved the N64, but we're talking about the BEST, and that's a good question.
At the moment, I would say the X360, but the moment PS3 comes out -although it's sickeningly expensive it will be the best on the market.
The new Nintendo console the 'Wii' has a good idea in allowing people to just download ANY previous Nintendo game and even sega megadrive games for free but I'm just really not a fan of the whole 'wand' controller, I like a good, comfortable and solid controller to hold onto when I play a game. I suppose there is a retro controller option, but nah.
So yeah I would vote PS3... except no one is going to buy one for a long while, except rich SoB's ofcourse. So i guess I'll vote x360, Xbox Live is still great and that's what tips it over for me.
