Breathe No More

I've been looking in the mirror for so long
That I've come to believe my soul's on the other side
All the little pieces falling shatter
Shards of me too sharp to put back together
Too small to matter
But big enough to cut me into so many little pieces
If I try to touch her and I bleed
I bleed
And I breathe
I breathe no more

Take a breath and I try to draw from my spirit's well
Yet again you refuse to drink like a stubborn child
Lie to me
Convince me that I've been sick forever
And all of this will make sense when I get better

But I know the difference
Between myself and my reflection
I just can't help but to wonder
Which of us do you love?

So I bleed
I bleed
And I breathe
I breathe no -
Bleed
I bleed
And I breathe
I breathe
I breathe
I breathe no more

Hey, hasn't anyone else noticed that Breathe No More lyrics are wrong in Ev's official site?

I was wondering if it could be fixed there. One fan didn't believe that the lyrics here are right because they're different from the official site....

Oh so its

"I just cant help but to wonder"

In the video from Cologne it sounds like she says

"I just cant help but to ponder"

 So.....I don't understand this part of the song:

...Take a breath and I try to draw from my spirit's well,
yet again, you refuse to drink like a stubborn child.
Lie to me, convince me that I've been sick forever,
and all of this will make sense when I get better...

The reason I don't understand it is b/c she sings of seeing her soul on the other side of the mirror, the glass breaks, and physically, she bleeds, but her soul on the other side of the mirror 'breathe no more'. The lines i put  I don't see how they fit in the song..
 !?!PLEASE HELP!?!

This is my interpretation. If you haven't formed your own opinion yet, don't read it.

The girl in the song paid too much attention to her appearance and suddenly realized that her 'self' is turning to only be her face. She tries to change it by showing her boyfriend (or whoever she talks to) her true self, i.e. her soul, but he refuses to see it because he only likes her look, nothing more. Finally she asks: "Which of us do you love?" meaning: "Do you love my soul or just my face?".

I think every line fits the song perfectly.

Might as well through my thoughts into the pot... I think perhaps "yet again you refuse to drink like a stubborn child," was her real self talking to her artificial self, and feeling powerless that the superficial part is taking over without listening to her soul.

"Lie to me convince me that I've been sick forever, and all of this will make sense when I get better." I love these lines, partly just because Amy sings them so perfectly on the live dvd. It always meant alot to me though because I often go through very dark phases and wonder if it's mental illness that makes me feel so bad. 'Breathe no more' just makes me feel less alone in the world.

Breathe no More (AbH version) is the most beautiful song I've ever heard. I just couldn't stop listening to it. Soooo wonderful. I really love when she sings "Lie to me": my heart breaks, it explodes because of the strong emotion.

I partly agree with Lisathewitch's interpretation. I think the two 'selves' are not her face and her soul, but two complete persons: the real one and the one she continuously lies herself she is (I hope you understand this sentence..). She's afraid to change because she fears the person she loves won't love her anymore. Maybe the line "yet again you refuse to drink like a stubborn child" is a sign of his refusal to accept a change, or it could be the real 'self' speaking to the false one. It's a bit confused and poetic because there are three characters in this situation and their relationships are so hard to understand, so fragile and so strong at the same time. I just think this lyrics is wonderful.

Just so I'm clear, as far as I know there's three versions of the song - the live version on Anywhere But Home, the piano only version on the Elektra soundtrack and the demo version with guitars and drum machine in. That right?

I love the Elektra version, but it's too slow for my liking. But I just listen to it on the computer and speed it up SLIGHTLY with windows media player, so everything's OK. LOL

I think the song needs to be slow.

It's slow and haunting. Gorgeous. I learned the song by ear from the Elektra soundtrack and It's such a simple song, but beautiful.

I agree! and the line: "lie to me convince me that i've been sick forever" means: convince me that i've been sick, just caring about my apeareance, and it will make sense when i wake up and see what is important!...

I love this song! i prefer the demo version rather the ABH acoustic version. because there in my opinion is the best amy's vocal ever!

When I first heard this song (on ABH) it fit what was going on in my life so well, that it instantly became my favorite Evanescence song and has stayed that way. It is a beautiful song, and the way Amy sings it invokes so much emotion.. it's just so powerful and amazing.

i this song
again it is one that is haunting, the lyrics amy's voice it really strikes and burries deep in one.
bnm has been a favourite since i first heard it on abh.
i have used the lyrics and theyheavily influenced my art work one term last year on duality.

to add my thoughts to the meaning. i believe and agree with Alpha and Lisathewitch's interpretation of the song.
to me it is one person two identities.
the one that want to break free and change and the one that is traped to conforming and following the expectations. it really is a sad song.

"Take a breath and I try to draw from my spirit's well
Yet again you refuse to drink like a stubborn child"

to me these lyrics kind of open up the idea of two selves.
"yet again you refuse to drink...child" to me is tring change oneself back to make one whole. to me it is drinking from the soul, revitalising one making them whole and healthy. it is just my impression of the soul used in the lyrics

this song makes me cry, it reminds me of my life when amy sings I've been looking in the mirror for so long, that I've come to believe my soul's on the other side... , like the song says I've been sick forever, it's sad to recall my past...

*quotes George Forman* I liked it so much, I put my name on it!

well not quite, my fave song so I thought I'd have the honour of having my personal site named after it! (points to sig)

I love the lyrics and the music. I can't decide which version I prefer because to me they all seem like different songs.. The Demo I like due to the electronic sound and that's the version I first fell in love with, The live version is also beautiful because I like the guitars and stuff.
and I REALLY love the acoustic one on the Elektra soundtrack. Plain, yet gorgeous. hehe, don't i sound all critic-y lol...

No. There's only two. The Anywhere But Home version and studio recording (Elektra soundtrack) version are the same. Anywhere But Home is just faster paced and has a guitars and drums for effect. And, of course because it's live. I don't like to consider live versions as a different version because they're the same as the Album versions.. The only exception are cover versions that were originally done by a different band...

I dunno if anybody else realized this...but at the end of the demo version of BNM.....you hear the same exact morse code effect as you do in My Immortal.

Yea I've noticed that the first time I heard the demo. I actually posted something about 6 months ago, when I didn't have any rep dots so it didn't post. :( It also has sound effects and it has a "Bloop" noise at the end, which is really cool.

Hey, I was listening to Breathe No More and I heard:
"... yet again you refuse to drink like the stubborn child you are"...

Is this what she actually sings or not? o_O. I swear it sounds like it.

Hey well see here i go poppin up again damn it dont u hate noobs?

Anyway i like sharing opinions, helps expand the mind so heres my go..

I believe that she is lookin in the mirror at a so called perfect self .. when it shatters obviously her self she see's that under neath all of the artificle she is falling apart inside slowy (as in too small to matter) when she trys to touch the subject or what ever to pursay put herself back together she hurts more and more.. thus bleeding

She takes a breatheand trys to draw from her inner strength (your spirit is supposively you stongest being) but yet again she cant do it (takes alot of mental strength to get over stuff as we all know) Lie To Her so she can pretend she will be alright but has been mentally ill and everything will be alright when she is cured but she know already that she is not mentally ill already knowing her truself.

then she asks which us her do u love the fake "Mask" she wear's or the tru self she hides deep inside that only a tru love could possibly see. and the rest is obvious.

Hey i may not be right or understandable to you but it all makes perfect sense and i hear all the same pain in her voice as others.

and incase no one gets it: breathe no more .. take a breathe and i try to draw from my spirits well... get it?? lol just playin laterzzz

There are several versions.

The Demo has a Drum track in it, Several effects, and I believe there's backup vocals... I wouldn't quote me on the backup vocals, though.

The Elektra Soundtrack version is Just Amy and the Piano.

The Live Version uses the whole band. It's VERY Different to The Elektra Soundtrack Version.

There are 3 versions of Breathe No More.

Does anyone know if Amy ever discussed the story behind "Breathe No More" or how she was inspired to write it? I'm using that song in a paper, and I was wondering if she had ever talked about the song in an interview, a post here, or a chat or whatever. If anyone knows where I could find something like this, I'd really appreciate it if you could steer me in the right direction.

I've been thinking about the song "Breathe No More" and its really getting to me, but in a good way. I think its either about split personalites or the price of being something you are not or who you want to be. I was thinking of writing a short stroy about a celerity who has lost her charisma and her life is spiraling down after the public loses intrest in her, so she makes a deal with a demon (my stories always involve demons or other supernatural things), to make things "better again" but they don't go as expected, its not too cliche is it? Or I could add more tension and drama in it, or it could be about the actress as she tries to commit suicide, but gets killed in the end. All of this from listening to a song! LOL! Sorry if I babble on and on.....:words:

Can't help but notice that recurring theme of duality in this song that i find in some of their other songs as well...masks..

Anyway, one of the incredible things about this song is just the way that Amy Lee carries it, she emotes so well, you can really feel the emotion seeping from her voice, from the song. Kind of reminiscent of "The Last Song I'm Wasting on You" Never ever heard another artiste that can do what she does with a tune.

Yeah and i love the lyrics as well \o/

"Too small to matter, but big enough to cut me into so many little pieces"

Not every song that's on a movie soundtrack is featured in the film. Breathe No More was never released as a single so tht's why there was never any video made for it.

I do believe, you can listen to this song on youtube, but the video
you see, is just different clips of Amy, Evanescence, edited together
playing with the song.

I tried to play this song on YouTube, and all it ever keeps saying......
This Video Is No Longer available....Just WTF?

What is with that?
I would always say, this is definitely one of Ev's most gorgeous
songs, out of everyone they have ever done!!
