View Full Version : Cable connection problems?

Okay, so my computer messed up and I had to erase it. With the little I learned in my computer classes in high school I was messing with these partitions and was like  "I broke my computer!" but somehow managed to get by all that.

Anyways, my internet was working earlier today. After I reinstalled Windows ME (pure garbage might I add)..I noticed my cable modem's orange light wasn't flashing no more. So now the internet won't work on it

Whereas previously befo on my laptop, the internet wouldn't work. And now it does! What the hell? The second I plug in the cable into the laptop, I see a green and orange light. As for the computer, it don't do shit.

I'm glad to have the internet working on my laptop again (since I can hook up the monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse and cause it's more powerful than the computer and it's Windows XP) but I'm absolutely clueless as to why my cable modem refuses to work on my computer. Any help?

My cable wire is connected to a $15 network card on my computer if that helps any. Thanks.

Have you checked the device manager to make sure the network card is working right? (At least, that the computer SAYS it's working right... it lies sometimes) How about the lights on the back of the card? What do they do? You might try re-seating the network card into a different slot on the motherboard too. Uninstall and reinstall all the network settings pertaining to the internet and the card. Oh, and FIRST, make sure it's not the cable, unless you're using the same cable for both computers. You might check in the system information to see if there are any reports of IRQ conflicts or such as that. Is it possible to try the network card in a different computer? Often times I remove all the unnecessary hardware from my computer and only put in the problem device, and work my way back from there, seeing what works and doesn't as I go. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm positive it's not the cable, I'm using the same one for both.

I just remembered that I didn't install the CD yet, maybe that's why. Haha. I'll try taking the card out and putting it in a different port? later tonight if installing the CD won't fix it. Gracias for the help :D

Haha, thanks :D

I finally got around to messing with the computer/laptop today. My laptop had to be reformatted to factory settings cause it had a bunch of shit popping up on it randomly  it was getting annoying (wasn't that bad, but I had nothing on it anyways so)..now the internet worked on the laptop during the Windows XP setup, but not when the computer is working (as in when I open Internet Explorer and stuff. Oh well, I'm not concerned about it at the moment)..the only weird thing is my internet on the computer is pretty slow right now. Usually a page will completely load in maybe 2, 3 seconds. Now it's a white screen then it takes awhile to load  maybe it'll speed up once I mess around with the computer or something.

Also, anyone know what this thing is?

"Press Delete for the computer to run" or something. I always got to press the Delete button in order for my computer to start  even after I reformatted it. It's confusing as hell..sometimes it'll go away for awhile but then it'll come back. Makes no sense at all to me.

This is at the very beginning while your system is booting? If so, that's just a message to tell you how to get into the system BIOS. You shouldn't have to to do that to get your system to continue to boot. If that is the case, then there might be something more serious (hardware level) wrong with your system.

Yeah, then maybe there is something wrong with my system then  cause I have to press the Delete button in order for the computer to go back to starting up, otherwise it stays at that screen. It's one of them black screens with Keyboard: Enabled, Mouse: Enabled, etc. all them things and this big Dell logo. Plus after reformatting a few times it's always like that still.

Maybe I just have bad luck with computers  and my internet speed is back to normal now somehow. I doubt it was something wrong with the service but it might have been. Now I just need to figure out how to get the damn internet working on the computer again (already switched that card around and stuff)..I'm not concerned with it at the moment, as long as I got this shit workin on my laptop for awhile, I'll be aight. Thanks for the help everyone.

Hey Cyra, you might try heading over to these forums --> http://www.broadbandreports.com and make a post in the appropriate forum for your cable internet provider. I usually find that there's some pretty darn knowledgable folk over there. They seem to have answers to just about every problem I see people throw at them :)

I really can't suggest much else, so nitecrawl3r's suggestion might be the best. The fact is, it's just real hard to diagnose something like this from "way over here". It's like a medical doctor trying to diagnose an illness by email. Without being there, able to test things, look at the screens and get an accurate patient history, there really isn't much to do besides throw out random suggestions.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm not really concerned with the whole pressing Delete thing since it's been like this for a few months now...as long as the computer works fine, I'm alright (and I'm just on the laptop for now)

Thanks for the site nitecrawl3r...and thanks again to everyone else too.

When you reinstalled ME did you also go in and reinstall all your drivers? And when you "erased" it, did you debug it or did you do a dirty install overtop of the ME that was already on your drive?

Yeah, I reinstalled most of them drivers, mainly the ones that are necessary, like the sound card one and the monitor one...I think that was it. Didn't need to install the ones for the network card (that I use to get online)..not befo anyways (since I can't get the internet working now..)

Debug it? Does that mean typing in them numbers and all? I'm not sure how to do that, the times I done that, I had a Dell support technician tellin me what to do over the phone. And by dirty install I'm guessing you're meaning just reinstalling over it or something...what I did was erase a primary partition and made a new one (don't remember what it does, I just remember learning that we was supposed to do that in computer class in high school), then I put in that WinME reinstallation CD. I formatted the drive and then installed Windows ME, that was about it...

Maybe debugging would fix the whole Delete thing screen while starting up?..unfortunately my Dell warranty expired years ago, so...I wonder what would happen if I called and gave them my computer ID # or whatever # it is. I had to call two or three times befo and each time, them #'s was different. I'm talkin about the ones that's like FC01 0001 or whatever. It worked with the same #'s a few times, but then they stopped working (I had them written down)..confusing stuffs!

The format and install was the right thing to do. None of that, though, would have anything to do with the behavior of your cable modem. Have you tried, at any point, resetting the cable modem? There should be a "Reset" button on the modem somewhere that should, effectively, reboot it. Do you also have a router between the modem and your computers? If so, you should also reset that (after the modem) to make sure that it gets a new IP address and DNS and all those other settings. Once that is done, you should boot up your computers on the network so they, can then, get all their settings refreshed.

I suspect that your PC problems and your connection problems are not, entirely, related.
