you can plug the tape player headphone jack into the sound mic jack in the sound card in the back of your computer.
there are usualy 2 jacks there that would fit the same cable. theyre labled, so careful not to plug it into the speaker output.
other than a cheap cable, you dont need any special equipment. and most cd burning programs can convert the recorded .wav files to mp3s. there are also programs you can download what change .wav to .mp3 and back agian,

here (http://www.mp3-converter.com/cool_edit_2000.htm)s a good site for you. it has free downloads for mp3/wav converters, and a basic sound editing/recording program.

A few tips for when you are recording to the computer from a cassette:

If when you play what you have recorded and it sounds extremly crappy, check the volume on the cassette player isn't too high. Doing it from my stereo needs the volume turned to the lowest setting.
Make sure you've got a decent cable to do it. If you aren't sure, they look like this (http://www.x10.com/electronics/allcategories/electronics/accessoriescablesmedia/videocables/sony_RK-G136.html).
Muenks' link was for Cool Edit 2000, which I find a little too confusing for direct recording. Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net) has about three options. Play, record, save (ok, and a few filters). The online help for it covers pretty much the entire program too.
Save your files in .mp3, not .wav. It will give you an option but most sound recording programs default to .wav.

Any questions, just ask :p.
