MIAMI, September 1, 2004 - Hip-hop, R&B, rock, film and television artists all beat to the same drum this weekend at the pre-MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) luxury suite at the Loews Hotel in Miami Beach, FL. Celebrities played against each other on the highly anticipated Donkey Konga video game exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube available Sept. 27. Artists including VMA winners and nominees Outkast, Lil' Jon and the Eastside Boyz, MatchBox 20, Fabolous, Chingy, Good Charlotte, Steriogram, Evanescence and music video director Bryan Barber drummed along on the DK Bongo controller to music arrangements of popular songs featured on the screen.


"Celebrities are a great litmus test for what will be a hot game; we were pleased to see all types of celebrities from rock to hip-hop enjoyed playing Donkey Konga," says Perrin Kaplan, vice president of marketing and corporate affairs. "It's not often you get to see Billy Martin (from Good Charlotte) playing music with (rap artist) Chingy!"
While the suite provided celebrities an array of hot products, celebrities did give back. Top of mind in Miami were the victims of Hurricane Charley. Big Boi from Outkast and award-winning music video producer, Bryan Barber, participated in the Donkey Konga Challenge. A ,000 donation to the Red Cross was made on behalf of Big Boi, the winner of the friendly competition.

Additional guests of the suite included recording artists Christina Milian, Lil' Scrappy, Adina Howard, Omarion (B2K) and Lea; music producer Just Blaze; actors O'Ryan (You Got Served), Erika Christensen (Swim Fan), Brian White (The Shield, Mr. 3000), J.D. Williams (HBO's The Wire), Michael B. Jordan (All My Children) and Paulie Shore; Frank, Carmen and John Gotti (Growing Up Gotti); and music industry tastemakers including Fonzworth Bentley, MTV VJ LaLa, DJ Clue, DJ Sno, and Lisa May (KROQ-FM, Los Angeles).

If you don't know what donkey konga is, its a video game were you use a bongo controller to play along with the beat. Im sure there is a better explaination, but Im not the one to give it :)

Yo they got that game for playin in Gamestop stores. It's to that song, "Wild Thing," I can't remember who it's by right now. It's just a demo tho but the congas is still there and all...

That game is funny as hell and it's fun. And the band's expressions are pretty funny too.

It's like you clap for the blue circles, the left half of the drum (yellow?) you hit the left conga, right half (red? or it's vice versa) you hit the right conga, pink is both congas and the long ones called Freeze (from DDR) is where you keep on clapping/banging till the color ends. Funny stuff.

I tried to play the game at GameStop today, but i think something was wrong. After I selected the Donky Konga demo, I hit the bongo and it went to a trailer for the tiger woods game. I hope it works next time i see the little booth thing

For the record, everyone who is saying they're going to get that game.

It's fairly easy and it's mainly aimed towards the younger audience (obviously) but of course, you can still have a lot of fun with it, regardless of your age. I've read previews of the game from sites like gamespot.com...with their Hands-On preview, and they said it was fun, but easy and gets pretty repetitive fast.

Not trying to spoil anyone's fun or anything, cause once I played it, it got me thinking about buying it. I already have EyeToy for the PS2 (the game where you play mini games with yourself on the screen with the web cam) and three DDR games as well as the mat, so yeah, I love these type of games. The game drops on the 27th of this month by the way.

Donkey Konga Hands-On


Once thought to be a Japan-only release due to the limited alternate uses for a bongo drum controller, Nintendo is currently showing off a pretty complete-looking North American version of Donkey Konga.

The unique part about Donkey Konga is its controller. The drum controller consists of two separate drums and a microphone that picks up clapping. The game asks you to hit one of the two drums either separately or simultaneously, in addition to clapping in time to the music. The game is playable by one to four players and offers three modes of difficulty, though most rhythm game aficionados shouldn't have too much trouble with the game's harder songs.

Along with the translation into English comes a new list of songs. The North American version of Donkey Konga features some music from Nintendo's licensed TV shows, like Pokemon and Kirby: Right Back At Ya. You'll also find licensed music, like "The Loco-Motion," "Wild Thing" (The Troggs version and not Tone Loc's, unfortunately), and "Louie Louie." Additionally, there will be some modern selections, including "All The Small Things" by Blink 182 and "Impression That I Get" by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

All in all, Donkey Konga looks like it will make a good rhythm game for the younger set. It's fun to bang around on the drums, but the lack of difficulty in most of the songs will probably prevent rhythm-game junkies from being hooked for very long. Donkey Konga will ship to stores in September.
They got some strange songs on there. It's retailed at $49.99...if I get it I'll probably end up still playin that new Def Jam game over it for weeks to come...:D this game is best played in multiplayer obviously, which is something I don't do much, so damn T_T

For the record, this game is very easy to play. I picked it up a few hours ago and was having fun until I was interrupted and just left the room.

The song list is weak...how you gon have some fun playin to a song like Shining Star, and how does a cover of We Will Rock You work out...I don't get that shit. They got a song that's the Happy Birthday one?! and other wack shit.

But overall it's fun and the other songs make up for those horrible ones (play to see how bad they are, then you'll know what I'm talkin about). I hope they release the other games that work with the bongos soon. Them bongos are limited at stores like EB Games and Gamestops, they only got like 2 or 3 in each store. Not sure about Best Buy or Circuit Citys, but Wal-Marts received around 7 or 8 copies to each store last night. It's $29.99 - $34.99 for a bongo, depends where you buy.

It's worth pickin up if you like active games I guess (or not?). I'm always pickin up this shit, whether it's DDR, Eyetoy, or playin some Time Crisis or some shit like that, if it's hot, then I'm down for it. This is like some Sambo De Amigo shit.
