Heya, thought I'd get my own thread again..
.. and show you my newest drawing. The scanner screwed up though, the right side is a bit distorted (in shape I mean).. but oh well. The person on it is Rosa Blasi - she's not really really famous, but I'm her biggest fan haha. She stars on a show called Strong Medicine, and she was in The Grudge for like 5 minutes.. in case you're wondering.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/rosablasiclub/rosa3.jpg
And here's a drawing I did (and posted) earlier, of the lovely Jorja Fox who you probably know as Sara Sidle from CSI.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v85/madangelina/jorja.jpg
Aaaand last but not least, a drawing of Anastacia. That I also made and posted before it was gone.

Hiya,
No new drawings yet.. but I did do some graphics and wallpapers. Please leave your reviews :)
+ rosa blasi; might be one of my best ever. it took me ages and I'm quite satisfied with the way it turned out.
+ michelle horn; she was in this film 'hostage' and her performance was amazing I thought. so I made a graphic of her.. these pics might just be the only good ones available though.
+ princess alexia; newborn Dutch princess. thought she was cute and decided to make something with her pics, sort of a congrats/tribute piece.
+ jorja fox; went for simplicity. guess that's all I have to say about it, too, hehee..
+ sara sidle; yeah, jorja fox again really. I like the way the spatter and all turned out. this is a 800x600 version, the regular 1024x768 was too large in filesize to update.

Amazing wallpapers there. You have a solid graphic design style and sense. I really, really enjoyed the one I re-posted the best.
Outstanding drawing as well. The darkest-darks could be stronger in value (like on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is complete darkness) like more value 8s and 9s. Technically wonderful and subtle details abound.
Hope you post more soon.

Well the scanner seems to have made it a bit lighter, the pencil on the actual drawing looks darker than this. But thank you so much for your comments, I have this smile on my face now :)

I think you did great! I like it that you're more daring than, for instance, I am with the dark tones. And the hair looks really natural in Jorja's portrait.
The face though, I have to admit, the first is your best. I don't have a phothoref to compare it too, but every details is really well done!
I'm sorry I didn't show up sooner. I did wonder where you were and I looked :p I'm always very curious about fellow artists' work on Evboard. We're sort of a little sub-community on this board.

You don't have to be sorry for that! Haha.
The first drawing I posted is my most recent one, took me the longest also. And cuz she's my favorite actress ever I tried extra hard. And the daring-with-dark-tones-part is also quite recent - if you were to check my site http://illuminated.color.nu and check out the earlier drawings, they suck mostly because I didn't shade all that much.
And in case anyone is interested, I heard that Rosa herself thought the drawing was amazing! w00p! *big proud smile*

I edited my previous message with a progress shot of a new drawing, but it never showed up so.. here it is again, taken after approximately 3 hours (with my phone lol). The drawing might just be my best one yet.. and it's taking me ages! I worked another 2 hours on it after I took this pic but I can't get my phone software to start up right now and I'm too lazy to reboot. Teehee. So that'll come tomorrow..
And I won't tell you who it is just yet, maybe someone of you will recognize her? Otherwise it'll be a surprise..

Booya! Finished my drawing of that girl the other day.. and she's MICHELLE HORN. I used the picture in an earlier graphic of her actually. She's an actress, recently was in the film Hostage with Bruce Willis. She's soooooo amazingly talented, and very friendly (I met her in Oct 2004), and she's only a couple of months older than me.
Anywayz, here it is:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/rosablasiclub/michellehorn.jpg
Again my scanner slightly distorted the drawing shapes though. *sigh*
Wow!!!
Excellent work here. I especially like the hand and the hose. The 'depth of field' effect you have there is working very well.
The face is also very well rendered. That and the shirt/torso are very well rendered.
Critique-wise I'd say just get in some more darker darks! Again you mentioned the scan was kinda tweaked. I'd rather hold judgement on the value scale unless I saw the actual drawing I guess.
If you have Photoshop try opening the scan in that and go to Image-> Adjustments-> Levels. Move the little arrows if they are in an area where you see no graphing on the line. Basically the far right arrow = whitest-whites and the far left is blackest-blacks. Levels allows you to alter the black to white range of your image. So if it comes out pale you can boost it up.
Anywho, I'm rambling. Awesome Job!!!

A-m-a-z-i-n-g!!!!
That drawing is gorgeous!
And you have a taste for good photorefs as well :)
I love the nose - you do a GREAT job with noses and it's one of the most difficult elements to get. I still struggle with it.
The eyes are just awsome and the lips are perfect!
And i can't believe you had the balls to draw water! I'd totally stay away from it.
Really REALLY well done! *claps and cheers*

07-13-2005, 05:05 PM
orgo - thank you thank you thank you! I was happy with the hand and top of the hose myself, it was a surprise turnout for me. And her forehead, too, lol. As for the darkness.. I did adjust it a bit, but really merely a bit. If I get the chance I'll try editing it again, try to make it look more like the drawing. The darkest shadows are darker than on this picture... I used mechanical to draw most, and 6B to "help" with shading, getting it darker. And to try and create different textures (which you can especially see next to her hair, there is a little bit of background that is much rougher than the skin and hair).
narya - *claps and cheers right back at ya*
You know.. the water I guess can be compared to that big black amy skirt you did (and amazingly well done, might I add). I just had to do it because the picture was so pretty. But yeah, it took me about an hour to draw just the water area (of the 6 or 7 that the drawing took me in total I think).

As for your question, I don't know if you mean drawing in general or this drawing only so I'll answer both; the drawing took me 6 or 7 hours and I have been drawing all my life.. but I started drawing portraits about 3 years ago I think.

a new drawing.. made it in Italy, the picture is from a dutch newspaper (de Volkskrant). finally figured out how to properly manipulate the scan so that it looks the way the drawing really is ;) as I was drawing it I was reminded of orgo's "darkest darks" comments cause it's a dark face, hehee.. I drew part with 6B and part with mechanical pencil; I tried to create a difference between the blanket and the blouse fabric for instance. I hope you like it.

Thanks! there really is no reason for "admiration", though. The fact is, I think you've already come much farther than me. I find myself observing and learning. :) I mean this, wholeheartedly. Not only you are much younger, but you already reveal a GREAT sense of proportion, shadding and texture. And it's all natural in your drawings: I can tell, you don't overthink things as you do them.
Plus, I like how you can retain the main aspects of your photoref without bothering too much about surrounding details, making us look precisely where the whole core of the piece is. In your latest, that was the baby's eyes.
Kudos, really.

What I think is funny about those Strong Med icons is that some are completely different from what I usually do, and I would've never made them like this if it weren't for the art piece I used for them. But some of them don't reveal at all that I used an art piece to make them, they look just like another bunch I've made recently. Which I just decided to post here below:

Muuuu ;__; no comments on my icons?
Ah heck. Move on. I made a sketch of Marg Helgenberger as Catherine Willows - and I mean sketch because it took me 2 hours and I didn't particularly try hard to make it more perfect. Which is visible in her face.. (sorry Marg! You're really a lot prettier than I just made it look!)

Hey!
It's great work for a two hour piece! The thing about her face is probably the eye on the right. It'a possibly a bit too high and to the side, making her face look assimetrical. Great job on the hair though. Simple and effective!

I love the texture all of your sketches have - it's really cool. Is that something to do with the paper, or... not?!
The icons pwn;)

Hey,
SoundOfSilence - thank you! I appreciate your comments even if you don't know what to say.. I have that too sometimes ;)
Narya - new siggy, prettiness! It really displays your skills! I think the problem in her face is that I didn't get the angle right; her one eye is supposed to be higher than the other, but because I failed at getting the right angle it looks really strange. Aw heck.. just a sketch.
BlackMagic - the texture.. hm. I have sketch book paper with a light texture, and I drew this with a 6B pencil trying not to smudge anything. That gives the texture I guess.

OK.. so I finally have a decent new drawing. It's a cambodian girl of which I unfortunately do not know the name.. the picture was on the cover of our TV guide and it turned out to be taken by the husband of the lady who gave me painting classes for a while. Hehee.
Anyway, here it is:

OH yeah and before I forget to say it, both of my websites have new layouts! Links are in my sig. All my art stuff is located at illuminated color, it's a collective now (expose is my graphic portfolio, that's my favorite layout of the bunch, paint the town red is the nondigital art area, square peg is the icon section)

My next drawing is going to be from Anastacia's new video. Just decided. I'm addicted. Funny enough she plays a complete freak complete with white jacket and a psych ward isolation type of room. It's so pretty with the song, how a broken relationship (or friendship) can screw someone up like that. Even if it's just for a while.
If you wanna see the video, click here (http://mfile.akamai.com/1689/wmv/bmguk.download.akamai.com/1689/anastacia/pieces_256k.asx) for a stream.
I made a batch of icons using screencaps from this vid, but since I already posted them on my journal I'll just post a link to my entry there: clicky (http://www.livejournal.com/users/fanaticfreak/17025.html#cutid1)

Here's a link to a picture that I took with my phone. I decided to draw a different picture after all.. it's charcoal on A3. A better quality version will come soon, I took a pic with my dad's camera but now he has it so I can't upload it. The original has been given to Anastacia on Nov 2 by her background singer, yay! I don't know what Anastacia thinks of it though.. hopefully I'll find out.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/rosablasiclub/30-10-04_1247.jpg
Also, I made a new flash layout for my art website: http://illuminated.color.nu
It is the first time that I have used video clips in flash. It features clips of Lu (Rosa Blasi) and Jonas (Nestor Carbonell) from my favorite series "Strong Medicine". It's going to be cancelled after its current season - in fact, this is the last week that they will be filming - so it's kinda like a tribute. Oh and the music is from the American Beauty soundtrack in case you're wondering.

My advice: scan it in like... 4 pieces. Reduce their size. Then use a pic program to photomerge them (photoshop does it for you with the photomerge option). Fix the light and voilá! :) I did it for a few of mine that did not fit the scanner.

I gave it to her background singer and she passed it on. I saw her the day BEFORE the EMA's in a very small but famous venue called the Paradiso. It was a quite exclusive concert. I've seen and met her a couple of times before tho'.. with any luck I will see her again next week at Domino Day. She is really nice! And funny. And she's got a VOICE! My god. lol.
Got my new drawing scanned.. it's definitely not my best but hey.. they're recognizable lol. I'm gonna send it to them soon, I promised Tamera I would write her anyway. I'll post a link this time cause 1000 px wide inevitably stretches the page...

As for the new work, I can't say I know who they are, but I like the technical work. It is not your best, but the faces are very expressive and you did a good job with the graphite.

Thank you guys! I'm glad you like it. It looks a lil' more like a sketch to me. But anyway.
Narya.. I think its 'cause drawing is becoming more of an outlet to me at the moment, which is why my most recent graphite drawings are a bit more sketchy. Now I feel like doing a "good" one again though.. maybe for Rosa's birthday (Dec 19). I wish I could make her a family portrait cause I know how important her family is to her, but I don't have a picture of them... meh. Anyone have any ideas of what you could draw for an actress besides herself? I already painted her wedding picture once.
And I wanna start painting again. Haven't done it in more than a year.. I keep avoiding it for some reason. Grabbing a pencil is easier than all the stuff I need to paint. Maybe I'm too lazy. Ugh.

The only thing I can crit is the black frillies on the middle-top left...it'd be nice to see those more fluid and organic...french curvy kinda frillies.

Wow I haven't been on here in a while! But I've got a new drawing in the works.. here are some progress shots (taken w/ my phone so they look odd and not as dark as it really is):
after 2 hours.. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/rosablasiclub/15-01-06_2328.jpg) after 4 hours (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/rosablasiclub/16-01-06_1238.jpg) and after 6 hours. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/rosablasiclub/16-01-06_1600.jpg)
It's graphite on aquarel paper, hence the texture. And the subject is once again Rosa Blasi. Heh. I think I'm going to try and sell this one to raise money for a charity she supports.. how much should I ask for a drawing, can anyone give me a direction there? This one is on A3 (about 30x40 cm) but I also have drawings that are half that size I'm planning to sell.
Speaking of Rosa - my fansite for her is now her official fan club! She bought the domain http://www.rosafans.com for it and it has a whole new look now with flash :) I'm soooo excited about it! Wishful thinking coming true!

Another two hours of working on it.. the pic was taken after dark tho' so it's not really good - the contrast is a lil different from the real thing. I think I should be able to finish it in about an hour now. I'm going to try and do that tonight.
Does anyone know what I could ask for this if I'd sell it? I know it's not entirely done but still.. cause I have completely NO idea. Not even a certain price range. I just don't have any experience with those things.
Outstanding work! Really nice value range and very appealing texture. The anatomy is what's most intriguing esp. the hands.
I charge $125 an hour for work like this with a 3 hour minimum rate (that means for example if something only takes me an hour to do I still charge for three hours of work). So figure out how many hours this took to complete then multiply that times your hourly rate and add in any supply costs (paper, pencils, etc).
If that seems too much then adjust the rate. If your new to the market and don't have many clients then I'd say $50 - $75 an hour. You don't want to scare anyone off with sticker shock!
Again, amazing work!

Craig -- thank you so much for your comments! I'm quite happy with the way the hands turned out actually. It was hard to shade them; it'd look stranger and stranger, but the end result made sense haha.
I am entirely new to the market lol cause I've never sold anything before. Even at the cheaper rate you suggested it's 500 bucks, that's a lot in my eyes, haha. Mm... figure drawings from Craig...
LOL yeah I'm impatiently waiting for those too.. but it's your area of expertise I'd say!
The drawing was done on my usual sketchbook paper.. for most of it I used a 6B pencil, but I used a 2B to sharpen it up a bit, especially for the hair. Which took a whole lot of patience really. The entire drawing took me about 4 hours - Rosa's face was done in less than one and the hair took me about twice as long.
myimmortalenemy

Hair... hair is a test to one's patience! I used to wish I would finish all the face's shadows so I could do the hair. Now I wish the people I draw didn't have so much hair on their heads. LOL!
You did an amazing job - especially with the shaddows on the forehead and hair. Great highlights too!
You use 6B?? Wow... I seldom use such dark pencils. But maybe I should give is a go one of these days. :)

Yeah I use that one a lot. For my previous drawing I used 6, 7 and 8B actually, hehee... I think they are easier to shade with, but it doesn't get as precise so I always use either a mechanical pencil or some random sharpened HB/2B pencil to add detail.

Funky. I usually use 5B, I don't think I did for the last one though. It depends how lazy I'm feeling.
It's such a beautiful picture, I keep having to look back at it! Still can't get over the hair!
LOL yeah I'm impatiently waiting for those too.. but it's your area of expertise I'd say!Lol, I don't know about that! I just know it's fun and I can't wait for tomorrow.;)

Absolutely I did. They're amazing. I can't get over that stuff.. my skills are limited to drawing from photographs really. I've been looking for some figure drawing class but no luck so far.

I'd love to see what happens if you can find classes, that'd be really interesting!

Damn! I forgot about your work. I'm having an Evboard artist feast today. It's interesting how your pencil work has a different style to Narya's even though you are both using photos as reference. You've got better too, I've noticed there's more contrast between light and dark in your drawings.
For your information it was your signature that brought me back to the thread. I'm subscribed now.

I just took a look at your drawings and only one word comes to mind: perfection !
The effects of light and shadows, the proportions, the expressions, just everything about them seems to have been done with a perfectionistic approach and that's just the way I like it. Amazing stuff!
Keep up the good work!

Here's little girl Arwen.. charcoal sketch-ish.. took about 2 hours and the ref was a pic I took w/ my phone so that explains the lack of detail. But surprisingly enought that wasn't the point of this drawing -- I love how the charcoal kept the picture as vibrant as Arwen really is. She is so adorable. And believe it or not, I used to look quite a lot like her when I was little.. hehee..

Wowie. I started looking at this thread from the beginning, and looked at the first picture and thought 'Nah, that's too good to be a drawing'...but then I realised it was a drawing and my jaw dropped. (Considering I had my chin resting in my hands, that was a considerable feat.) I loved the one of Michelle Horn with the hose; the water is brilliant because it looks EXACTLY like water. That most recent one is also spectacular. I don't even know who most of the people in your drawings are, but I feel like if I met them in the street, I'd recognise them straight away based entirely on your drawings, and that's quite an achievement. Well done! :p

rainbow chaser - you're right, I don't often draw very very well known people. Dakota Fanning and of course teh Amy are on my to-do-sometime list though ;)
Lizzie - back at ya! Well, who knows..
Narya - I like mechanical pencils for their precision mostly. My Michelle Horn drawing (with the hose thing) was also mostly done with one. And I tried to keep this recent drawing softer, sort of experimenting with that.

try it all, it will be amazing
Charlie,
I'd like you to try something out since you're in an experimental phase. Do some work like these last two pieces but try this:
Canson Mi-Tientes paper. It comes in loose sheets and also pads. Basically it's pastel paper BUT works incredibly well with Prismacolor pencils.
Actually, you can get not just vibrant colors of that paper but also solid neutral and light, whitish hues somewhat like drawing with graphite on white paper. I'd love to see what you'd do for example with a light-medium gray paper and a very light gray or even a white colored pencil...
Give it a go. I plan on doing a portrait of Narya like that. It's an amazing medium combo once you mess with it a bit.
If you end up trying it, please scan and post whatever you come up with.
detail.freak
05-18-2006, 03:49 AM
Hm... I'll have to look for that, it sounds like a nice idea! I also love working on dark textured papers with pastel crayons btw, might try that soon too. If I get some money to buy the paper, lol.

Nice work with the colourpencils, though I think your work is more powerful in b&w.

This morning I heard that the El Faro fundraiser would like to include two drawings of mine in their silent auction!! YAY! I hope they raise some money. I am going to use the one of Rosa Blasi with one of the orphans (the one in my sig) and I am going to draw another picture of a child from there. I'm so excited!
And I recently "stole" my sisters old camera, which is completely suck-ass but better than my phone.. I like taking pictures but I'm no expert. I had two flowers in my room.. one was dying and the other fell apart. Hence:

It was sorta experimental but I kinda like the style. It has lots of room for interpretation and therefore goes as fast as you want it to go, and I can stop at any moment basically. The scan didn't come out too good tho' - the paper is actually slightly colored, the recycled-type of paper. So it's a little darker, while the colors look a little softer maybe. Little less "bits and pieces" than on the scan.

myimmortalenemy-- yeah I think she is adorable ;) Last saturday she kept saying my name, and I would answer, and she'd say "hello!" and giggle continue playing. Too cute.
Matise-- I'm glad you like my work!
OK back on topic. I made an illustration yesterday that is going to be in a book! It's a book about music, and for a story about the song "Rocket 88" I was asked to draw one of those cars. So I made a pencil drawing, and edited it in photoshop to make it look like one of those 50s posters. It's probably still going to be photoshopped on an old paper with a little bit of text along the side, but I can show you the drawing and the edited colorized version.

"Have you got any Limberger?"
"No."
"No, that figures. It was pretty predictable, really. It was an act of purest optimism to pose the question in the first place. Tell me something, do you have any cheese at all?"
"Yes, sir."
"Now I'm going to ask you that question once more, and if you say 'no' I'm going to shoot you through the head. Now, do you have any cheese at all?"
"No."
(shoots him) "What a senseless waste of human life."

teh update! I just spent 11 hours on an A4 size drawing. one word. circulism. gawd o.O
it's a birthday gift for the lil girl on the picture, she turned a year old today! it was a surprise for her parents and were very happy with it. and the girl is so adorable, too. she had never seen me before but she wanted to sit on my lap when she got out of bed. and spent half an hour unwrapping her gifts with me. kawaii ^__^
*tries to upload file* "Exceeds forum quota by 267.07 MB." -- what the heck?! the file was only 95 MB o.O oh well.. off to photobucket then..

I don't plan on stopping at all... lucky you :P
I made a quick sketch of one of the new Amy pics last night. Took me an hour exactly. I'm planning on making a good drawing of one of the "repfoto" pics but so far they're too tiny and watermarked. But they're dead drop gorgeous. So I'll have to draw one. This pic was gorgeous but blurred... nice sketch material for me.
Anyhoo, the scanner is still being an ass, so here's a crap phone pic.. I did it with an 8B pencil so it's darker than it looks.
