The Open Door, Track #5
written by: Amy Lee and Terry Balsamo

We next dive into the soundtrack of a dark movie, with Amy’s mumbling and singing that lightens us up. The very gloomy atmosphere lasts throughout the whole song. DJ Lethal’s samples once again perfectly match with the song.

Credit for translation goes to julie.

Taken from The Open Door News thread. (http://www.evboard.com/showthread.php?t=31982)

---

"Cloud Nine"
A vocal tour de force, using strings, studio effects and Lee's own layered moaning.
It's about breaking up. There are a lot of relationship struggles on the record. I always write about what I was feeling, because then it's genuine. I was struggling with a relationship and felt like a waste of space. The first lyric says it all, "If you want to live, let live/ If you want to go, let go/ What are we doing here?/ Because I can live without you."

----
CLOUD NINE

If you want to live, let live
if you want to go, let go
I'm not afraid to dream- to sleep, sleep forever
I don't need to touch the sky
I just want to feel that high
and you refuse to lift me

guess it wasn't real after all
guess it wasn't real all along

If I fall and all is lost
its where I belong

If you want to live, let live
if you want to go, let go
I'm never gonna be your sweet, sweet surrender

guess it wasn't real after all
guess it wasn't real all along

If I fall and all is lost
no light to lead the way
remember that all alone is where I belong

In a dream
will you give your love to me
beg my broken heart to beat
save my life
change my mind

If I fall and all is lost
no light to lead the way
remember that all alone is where I belong

This song is totally amazing, How Amy said the album was sexy...This song just totally sums up that sexyness.
I think this along with other songs are much more in depth and what I would say is heavier than fallen. I'm loving it!

IAW Ben...this definitely shows that sexy/soulful side. and the beginning chants are very reminiscent of Haunted in a way. Amazing.

I get such a vivid mental image from this song. I just want to draw it.

You know, after CMWYS, I was a little afraid she'd gone completely into a more commercialized, blunt sort of thing. This has completely cured that for me. Hell do I love this song, and Amy.

Edit: It reminds me of Imaginary.

Am I the minority who had a huge expression of WTFness on their face while hearing this song for the first time?

Ghetto Fabalus
09-04-2006, 06:45 PM
I did, until the weird chanting went away. wtf is that, is that actually Amy or is it some kind of instrument? *confused* It sounds like it might be her or a choir amplified crazylike.

I'm trying to appreciate its role in the song, but it's taking a little bit of work. Wasn't this song called the most "pop" song on the album in one of the early magazine reviews? I have no idea where they got that, lol. This is a whacked out song--not in a bad way, it's just... different. I'm liking it the more I listen to it, which has been a trend for a few of the songs so far.

Oh, I am LOVING this track. It's so haunting and heavy, absolutely brilliant. I also had a WTF expression at the choiry thing in the background.. it was a very weird haunting ghostly sound.

I was worried too than she'd gone commerical, but the album should not be judged on CMWYS.. this wasn't what I was expecting at all.

It's so complex, lavish and really creative.

Hollee Ann

when i heard the chanting the first thing i thought of was Missing. It sounds so much like it. I had a somewhat WTF look, but it was a good WTF. if there is such a thing?

As I was going through the TOD discussion thread, I saw that a lot of people didn't know what to think about this song. It's one of my favorites and it's hard saying that since I cannot pick on one single song on this album!

I'll just do it and say that this is my #1 right now! I can't get the "if you want to live, let live--if you want to go, let go" out of my head. And the chorus just pwns my soul :).

Wow! My hair is frizzing while I'm listening to this song! (Oops...I just remembered that I'm curly anyway :D) it's so hard and different from everything I've expected from Evanescence. Amy has improved her voice abilities very much. She shows the really wide range of her voice in this song.
Great song but I'm trying to forget about the lyrics because they make me feel strange.

I almost skipped over this song entirely based on how annoying the beginning was.

But, now I think it's one of the better ones. I just hate the moaning in the background, and Amy's voice distortion. But, the ending of the song is great, and the chorus is one of the better ones. After the song hits the 2:00 minute mark, it's great.

cloud nine is a term similiar to having a sense of euphoria, or total happiness. pretty much you feel invincible like nothing can go wrong.

When someone says they're on cloud nine, that usually refers to daydreaming. Like "Oh, I was off on cloud nine again." Meaning you were daydreaming. :)

I can't get over how amazing this song is, especially after listening to it on my mp3 player! It made me love it that much more and I so loved it before as well. The strange thing she does in the background vocally, is one of the best things about this song. The chorus is what sticks out the most for me though. :)

Honestly, This was the only song that I would skip over after hearing it the first time.

Somehow the opening/closing vocal effects seemed somehow cliché gawth.

Then today *pouf* I get the song somehow stuck in my head, and now I really like it.

Why is Ev being so weird to me like that?!?!

Ooo yes. I love how she sings that. <3 I'm loving how she sings a lot of the stuff on this album. On Fallen, it always seemed obvious that she was focusing on making her singing sound all perfect. But on this album, she seems to have kind of let her voice go and be controlled more by emotions. Yay for Amy!

And on a different note, from looking through the album discussion threads, it seems like this song is on a lot of people's least favorite list. Haha. This one was one of my immediate favorites upon first listen, and I have decided that it's my third favorite on the album. And songs that a lot of people are listing amongst their favorites, are my least favorites. It's so interesting to see how varied everyone's tastes are with the songs on this album.

God, the bass in this song kicks my ass. Oh, Will. :(

I concur!

I really like the drumline.. and the growls.. and the "high" of course. And as if that wasn't awesome enough.. then she goes into the "guess it wasn't real after all" part and the progression of the music and vocals are perfect.

I don't know. This to me is the best song on the album.. my favorite atleast. And I think it'd be a really good second single.

I can't say that much of this song really because I don't even understand the lyrics, I don't know what she's talking about or what she means, anyway here I go.

Amy's voice in this song sounds amazing, you can easily say that she has evolved into a better singer, he puts a lot of emotions in this song and you can get it by listening how she actually sing it, it's amazing. Musically it has also evolved a lot, it sounds good and the guitar-drums combinations make an excellent background for Amy's voice in this song, I love it ;)

This should've been the first single, in my opinion. But, since it wasn't chosen, it should most decidedly be the next one. It's heavy enough to draw people in, and it's not too alienating or experimental.

Oh, and the fact that it kicks large amounts of ass helps as well.

It's nice to have a completely different Ev song. They're a variety. It's like a bunch of different, yet similar bands together in one, but with the bonus of a perfected voice. This is perfect for Evanescence to try and I wish they have a few more songs like this in the future.

other than the chorus I don't think this one is that 'poppy'
the chorus is fairly poppy, however. Not a bad thing, it gives some stability to an otherwise very creative song, but maybe that's where they got the 'poppy' thing from?

I remember hearing the streaming sample from the site and thought it had a cool and different style. I liked her voice at the beginning with the special effects. I can't wait to hear this one live, especially with the rolling guitar riffs, and her voice hitting those high notes and then coming back down. I also love the slow guitar notes halfway through. Gives this song a great sound, I love how a lot of the songs combine both heavy rock and creative melodies. I definitely don't miss the structured crunchiness of Fallen. I love how the guitars and piano just go where they want to on the song. This song actually reminds me at the beginning of Kidneythieves...Great song. I like how its strong and pulsates.

This song rocks my socks. After two listens that was me. Cloud Nine mania. :D As Oceanic says, there are many layers to it, and I, too, appreciate them all. I love that there's so much going on. The introduction is so exciting. It's - *Gail waves hands up and down in a mysterious, floaty manner* sounding, non? I love the straightforward nature of the lyrics. They're so frank; Amy putting her cards on the table. It's so catchy, full of frustration, but when I listen to it I always feel filled with relief. It makes me think of an annoying and upsetting situation I'm in with a friend right now...I think it's a pull-yourself-together song.

Although the last lyrics - 'remember that all alone is where I belong' - are pessimistic, I seem to derive some morbid hope from them. I can't quite figure that out. But I like it. Cloud Nine is great.

Oceantron

Heh. that's so true. I too, get an optimistic vibe from that even though it's pessimistic (i'm sure it's supposed to be like that). I relate to this song as well and that's what really got me into it at first. The way it 'sounds' is just a major bonus for me. The weird vocal thing she does at the beginning and throughout the song is just the coolest thing, it always makes me smile. Good stuff, this song.

Although the last lyrics - 'remember that all alone is where I belong' - are pessimistic, I seem to derive some morbid hope from them. I can't quite figure that out. But I like it. Cloud Nine is great.

I agree. It's like she's saying she doesn't mind being alone- she even feels happier that way. I relate completely.

I'm in love with this song! It sounds incredible live. Ties with The Only One as my favorite song from The Open Door.

Exactly why this song annoys the @$%* out of me.

I'm not trying to offend anyone who likes a majority of the ToD stuff btw.
Just adding my honest opinions.

why does everyone seem to hate this song the oooooooo parts make the song more interesting to listen to. plus the energy in the chorus is immense. I love this song, it's so powerful and for some reason it always seems a bit longer than it is, weird.
