View Full Version : Evanescence is upbeat, entertaining, if a little skimpy

New article, basically the same old stuff, but entertaining...

One can excuse Evanescence singer Amy Lee if she came off a little grumpy during her band's concert Friday night at UMB Pavilion. As she sat at a piano for a segment slowing up the show's upbeat pace, she chastised fans who quickly left their seats for assorted relief. "This is the wrong time to go to the bathroom. I see you guys. You're haters. I hope you're not coming back!"

Shortly afterward when she stopped the show after her piano pedal went awry, requiring a tech to fix it onstage, she told the crowd, "You love it. Just stand there and watch."

But of course, it was all in good fun, and went along with Lee's "I'm a little drunk tonight" revelation (hey, it's rock 'n' roll). And this was the next-to-last night on a never-ending tour for the rock band, and they were feeling especially celebratory - if also in need of a long vacation. Evanescence has been on the road forever behind its durable debut, the 5 million-selling "Fallen," which after 16 months on the Billboard 200 refuses to live up to its title.

Still, after the UMB set, it's hard to imagine Evanescence is the Best New Artist of 2003, a title lavished upon the band by Grammy voters early this year. The goth-inspired act's concert, like its CD, is solid and entertaining, though not particularly special, save for the fact Evanescence is the rare A-list female-fronted rock band making noise these days. (It's sad and telling that this is noteworthy.)

Last year, Evanescence was rocked in ways it wasn't looking for when founding member and guitarist Ben Moody abruptly left, allowing Cold's Terry Balsamo to step in. On Friday, Lee, Balsamo, guitarist John LeCompt, bassist Will Boyd and drummer Rocky Gray rocked in perfunctory fashion.

Lee, in particular, isn't such a commanding presence in such a large setting, and the set didn't thrill the way it should have. But the band got its point across as they unveiled, for the umpteenth time, brooding "Fallen" songs such as "Everybody's Fool," "Taking Me Over," "My Last Breath" and "Tourniquet." Piano ballad "My Immortal," a real detour for the band, made way for "Bring Me to Life."

The show came and went after a swift and skimpy hour, perhaps a hint that Evanescence doesn't have enough material to support headlining major amphitheaters so soon (though the decent crowd of about 11,000 dictates otherwise).

Seether, whose latest CD is "Disclaimer II" opened the concert, along with Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin. Seether is clearly grunge-inspired, not a bad thing in its case. And that's why it made sense for the band to do both Pearl Jam's "Immortality" and Nirvana's "You Know You're Right." But the highlight might've come when Lee joined Seether, which features boyfriend Shaun Morgan, on stage for "Broken."

This doesn't make much sense... "upbeat?"

I hate critics.

I really wonder what these reviewers are looking for in a concert, because obviously an amazing voice, great stage presence, and moving songs don't cut it!

They're just stupid ;)

Don't worry, as soon as the new material comes out they'll all be falling over themselves to praise them.

Um..upbeat is a good thing.

And that review was pretty good if you ask me.

I've seen ev live 3 times, and I think they all have a pretty good stage prescence, but it's nothing great, and there IS still room for improvement if you ask me.

Hell ya! I would have to say this a pretty damn good review if you compare it to other ones I've read.

It's completely positive. He just has a problem with the length...which he cites at just lack of material.

Cracks me up. I mean the shows only an hour anyway, they couldn't wait a few more minutes? On the other hand, maybe Amy needs to relax and not take it so personally. I mean sometimes you just gotta pee!!

But of course, it was all in good fun, and went along with Lee's "I'm a little drunk tonight" revelation (hey, it's rock 'n' roll). OMG!! A rock star a "little drunk" onstage?!! I'm shocked, simply shocked!!!

Having said that Aerosmith plays much better sober - trust me. Don't let it be a habit.

That was a good article. But I thought that most bands get 1 hour for their sets...meh I dunno. lol... and yes Amy drunk OMGOMG SHE CAN'T BE!?!?! OMG *dies*

When I'm drunk, my words come out all wrong, and when I try to sing to songs I mess up the words, so although it'd be weird me singing in front of thousands of people, it'd be even weirder if I was drunk doing it (or trying to). Still, I suppose it's different. My ex was a drummer, and she had stage fright, so she was always drunk when she performed on stage. It calmed her nerves and helped her play better, so I suppose the same could be said about Amy. Also, I dunno about everyone else, but I'm more upbeat when I'm drunk anyway. And I definately say things worth hearing. Hehe.

Oh, and maybe Taking Me Over is an exclusive song for the concert. ;)

I hate people. They say in there own way that Eva sucks, and it pisses me off. I have seen Ev three times, 1st with Ben (it was good for a band in discord), second, not long after Terry joined, and it was mediocre to say the least (maybe my seats were too bad to get a good view), and then this last time, 2 weeks ago, and it was the best concert yet. I can tell that the reviewer knew nearly nothing about the band, misnaming songs, and saying they don't have enough material. If they could, I am sure they would be pulling 2 + hour sets playing the Origin and ep stuff. I cannot believe how these people are! My thong is in a bunch now.

It wasn't just a few going to pee though!!! there was a ton of people who got up and went to go pee or do whatever, I saw them all... so I don't blame her!! It was really funny though when she called them haters and told them to not came back and that we didn't want them here anyways :)

Heh, that was good. There must of been alot of people that had to go use the bathroom. Hey, if ya gotta go, ya gotta go. :p

But yeah, that was a pretty good review, compared to some I've read. Though, I'm interested as to what this "Taking Me Over" song is like. Maybe a new song.

It was funny, I just cheered her on and the people kind of stopped when she said it and were like Uhhhh.... If I were one of them (But I would never be considering she was doing my favorite song Breathe NO More and my eyes were glued on them until I the concert was fully over :) ) Some of them then kind of hesitated to go.. hehehe she got em! But I agree who in their right mind WOULD leave.. the nerve!

This review wasn't too bad, but honestly, Amy does have a really good stage presence. Like seriously, if you compare her to so many other rock acts out there... she's really great. She's really dramatic and works the stage, great voice and serious emotions. On a lot of live shows after some long notes and after certain songs, you can see how much effort she puts in when she has to catch her breath or is sweaty. Of course theres always room for improvement, like Will and Terry could work the stage more for sure, but I don't think that aspect really stands as a good critique.

But MAN oh man, am i looking forward to their next tour. Just think of how awesome, like, new material and all sorts of new ideas and different set lists and effect, a new frikin set too. Plus, the boys will have helped write this own more and will so be more into it. Day-Um!!
