For those who don't know what a mashup is...a mashup is when you take the music of one song and mix it with the vocals of another.

Mashups have recently gotten very popular.

Such as the infamous Grey Album...mixing the music from the Beatles' White Album with Jay-Z's Black Album.

There's a mashup show on our alternative station that debuted last week.

It's featured some mashups including:
Linkin Park's One Step Closer's (Reanimation version) with Jay-Z's 99 Problems

Nine Inch Nails' Closer with 50 Cent's In Da Club

and

Three Days Grace's I Hate Everything about You with J-Kwon's Tipsy.

We even had a mashup of our own on the Evboard.

Goddess K's mix of Bring Me to Life with Ben Moody's The End Has Come.

The questions I have are:

Can you think of any vocal parts of different songs that would fit well with Evanescence's music?

Conversely can you think of any of Amy's vocal parts that would fit well with the music of other contemporary songs?

Also, if you have the capabilities to try a mashup, go right ahead :)

Wow, that sounds interesting. I've never heard of mashups before. I'd have to hear some before I could say which songs would go well together.. o_O

Ok hows this sound-

In the song "They" by Jem, I could picture the part where she goes "I'm sorry, so sorry" in Evanescence's "Missing."

Another brilliant idea from teh panda-mod ;)

Personally, I've been listening to a lot of Alter Bridge lately (and as a result, went back and dug up some of Mayfield Four's work -- Myles Kennedy's old band prior to AB). I really haven't liked an album this much since Fallen so it's probably fair to say they're now my second-favorite band, right below *surprise* Ev :p

Anyway, assuming I have the right idea about what Cfw's talking about here, I'd love to hear any possible AB-Ev "mashups". I think the most obvious one would probably be:

In Loving Memory (Alter Bridge) and My Immortal (Evanescence)
ILM was written by Mark Tremonti about his mother (who passed away). It's the "softest" track on AB's One Day Remains album and not only fits well in theme with My Immortal, but also shares a similar background: both were emotional lyrics written by the respective band's lead guitarist (or former lead guitarist in Ev's case, if you want to nitpick)

A few other ideas:

The End Is Here (AB) and Whisper - Live Version (Ev)
This one I'd really like to hear. Starting this with the intro that Ev performs live for Whisper (the "Egyptian-sounding" part before the guitars come in) would probably make these two songs mesh well.

Eden (Mayfield Four) and Ev
Slowly turn the page and say goodbye and walk away from everything
That we worked so hard to save
"Eden" should fit in with a few Ev songs; musically it might go well with Imaginary (Origin version) but lyrically might work better with My Last Breath with a little creativity :) It's from MF4's 2001 album "Second Skin".

There's a few others that would probably work too, so if there's any other AB+Ev fans who have the talent to do this kind of thing, I'd love to hear it :)

... On a side note, a certain label is actually in the position to legally do this, and milk both fanbases, but I'm not sure how well the two bands get along right now. But I guess that leads to a whole other discussion that's probably better held elsewhere :p

EDIT: To Mashu -- I was actually thinking the same thing when I first saw the topic :p

Sounds kind of interesting, never heard of a mashup before. Those sound like very interesting choices to put together. I can see how some would be really cool while others might sound kind of lame.

I actually made one a few days ago, its a bit dodgy because I used sound recorder.
I mixed the first 2 bars of Lies and a song by 36 Crazyfists called Bloodwork.

I don't know how to put it up here, so if anyone could tell me that would be good.

Nope. But if you're able to get K-Rock clear, they'll prob'ly play it again. If you get a chance to listen to it, it comes on Friday nights at 10 PM...you know....when no one is listening

Until then, go here:

Yeah, those are cool. I have one on a CD of Sean Paul's Like Glue with a Beenie Man song, forgot which one. They also put a live version in the middle of Like Glue for the chorus, it was pretty cool (well they had to make it sound more interesting considering the album was released earlier this year and that the song got old last year). I've heard a few various other ones and like many others, bootlegged that Grey Album  it's all good stuff. Too bad none of my local stations do this shit. At least I don't think so (considering that I don't even listen to the radio much)

Is a mashup the song that Eminem did with parts of Aerosmith's Dream On??

'Cause I'm really trying to imagine what a mashup is, but have no clue... lol

Not exactly.

What Eminem did was a sample of that song.

Use that link. There is a forum that has links to some examples of mashups.

You might like it and you might not, but it's worth listening to just to get an idea.

Yeah, now I know. Thanks.
I've listened to Beastie Boys' Ch Check It Out over The Party Boys' He's Gonna Step On You Again and it's pretty cool !
Now I will think in some mashups for Ev :)

I personally don't like mash ups, I get krock here in NYC, and when they play them, it kinda drives me crazy, cause I really don't like them. the last one I heard them play was no doubt's hella good with a female rapper, it was like painful, please stop....
at project revolution, they had a dj there doing that, he mixed Tool with Outkcast...needless to say Maynard would not approve...and the audience there wasn't fond of what he was doing either...but hey if you guys like em more power to you, I just never knew that ppl actually liked it....

I can see where you're coming from; it really comes down to a matter of personal preference, like anything in music for that matter. That said, I actually agree some mashups do sound more like a disrespectful butchering of good music to me, but I also think that--done right--it could actually play on meanings and strengths of both songs.

There don't seem to be many of them that use Ev songs, but I did hear Goddess K's The End To Life which I liked (and thought was a cool idea just from the way the titles combined :) )

I listened to "Hella Good" with "Without Me" and it's really well done. I just always feel bad for Moby when I hear "Without Me," so it's not exactly my favorite song.

Look at the link that Mastermind has. That gives you a great idea of what a mashup really is.

Eminem's use of Dream On was a sample.

For it to be considered a mashup, it's got to be from 2/3 already existing songs.

Think of it this way....a song has "sex" with another song to make either a beautiful new song or a buttugly new song.

Some mashups work and some don't.

Edit: My analogies suck and I apologize.

Nah, that's a good analogy for mashups.

Actually, the first thing that came into my mind when I read it were those celeb "what if they mated" pics that Conan O'Brien does :p

Generally, most artists that like their stuff to be remixed either come out with instrumental tracks of their music...or a capella tracks of their music. As a matter of fact, ever since the Danger Mouse Grey Album controversy with Jay-Z started, he released an a capella version of The Black Album to support Danger Mouse's artistic freedom.

Otherwise, there's this post from the Mashup Radio board:

One (albeit dodgey) method I've found that can sometimes work is to get a CD single that contains the instrumental, reverse the phase of (or invert) the signal and mix it over the top of the completed track effectively subtracting the instrumental from the song and leaving the aca behind. To do this you will need a very good sequencer that can zoom into the signal so close that you can see each individual sample that makes up a digital signal, I use Steinberg Cubase SX. The results of this are very mixed, I found Breathe by Blu Cantrell worked perfectly but other songs have been a huge dissapointment. For example, When trying this with Lowrider by Cypress Hill I found the tempo of both tracks vary ever so slightly but that is enough to cause me much grief. To combat this I sliced up the instrumental into EVERY SINGLE BEAT and then painstakingly pasted each slice into the mix. This took a lot of spare time to complete (yeah I know, I don't have a life!) but it was worth it because now I have the advantage of having an acappella that no-one else has. One point I found of great benefit doing this is that it leaves a slight chirping noise where the hi hats used to be and this makes a very handy reference point when it comes to mixing it with another song. If you would like to try this I suggest you grab a copy of Breathe by Blu Cantrell (it must be the CD version and not the vinyl) and practice as I know it works well with this song.

Sounds complicated.

whats wrong with the vocals now???

Nothing. I think you're missing the point. The vocals for mashups generally remain unchanged.

Only time that I've heard a DJ mess with the vocals is with the 311/J-Kwon mashup they have on the site that Mastermind mentioned.

Instead of J-Kwon's original vocals:

One, here comes the two to the three to the four

the DJ changed it up to make the song as if they were actually collaborating with each other:

Here comes the three to the one to the one...

I assume you can all spell that out.

Going under and Everybody;s fool would be easy to do since there are already instrumental versions of those. i think it would be more interesting to hear to vocals of amy with other songs though.

I didn't know Muggs was a DJ on K-Rock. That's cool.

That shit's a bit complicated but it would be fun as hell to learn and do. Man, I wish I had access to that kind of equipment and the money as well.

The J-Kwon/311 mash-up's nice. Already heard the rest on the site befo (most of them)..

According to this, somebody did a mashup between Ev's Everybody's Fool and Method Man and Redman.

They said it was executed well, but the sound was off. I am definitely curious as to what it would sound like.

K-Rock has just played the first "professionally" done mashup featuring Evanescence.

It was Everybody's Fool mixed with a song by Cypress Hill. Not surprising, when the host of the K-Rock mashup show is also a member of Cypress Hill. I hope that that mix ends up on that mashup site next week :)

They have the Evanescence-Cypress Hill mashup that I was mentioning before.

Just go to www.mashupradio.com then go to Hot Mashups and it's the first one there.

I tried to give the direct link but apparently it wasn't working.
