RULES

This karaoke contest will run for 6 weeks. After the first 5 weeks, the weekly winners will compete in a final week 6 throw down for the fame and glory of the EvBoard RockStar title!
Each week (on Monday), a selection of 5 karaoke tracks will be made available to you. Participants get to choose which one of the 5 tracks best suits their taste and range.
If none of the supplied tracks is to your liking, then you may submit a track that you find yourself. You may only submit that track once, so the next week you'll have to pick one of the 5 supplied or pick a different one you find yourself.
Participants have until 11:59 pm (MDT/GMT-6) on Thursdays to email their mp3 to me.

Every Friday I will make a new polling thread with the hosted mp3 tracks for all of EvBoard to vote on for 72 hours after the poll is posted.
Tracks WILL NOT be identified with the EvBoard username that submitted it. This is to encourage you to listen to the track and evaluate it on its merits--not simply by who is your friend. We hope this will encourage the more self-conscious of you to participate.
On Mondays, the weekly poll will close and the winner will be declared and their identity revealed!
If a person wants to "out" themselves after a week has completed, they may do so. Officially, the anonymity of participants will be maintained until the very end of the contest to encourage participation from week to week.
Caveat about auto-tune: The use of auto-tuning software is prohibited. If it is discovered that you use auto-tune for any submission, you will be disqualified from the competition.
PRIZES

Weekly winners will receive 5,000 points.
The overall (week 6) First Place winner will receive a 3 month paid subscription or 50,000 points and the Runner Up will receive a 2 month paid subscription or 33,000 points. The winner will choose between the subscription or points. If a winner is already a paid subscriber, their subscription will be extended by the appropriate length.
But where's the 'fame and glory' you ask? The overall (week 6) First Place winner will also receive a special banner under their username designating them as the EvBoard RockStar Karaoke Contest winner!

FAQS

Q: Do I have to participate in every week?
A: There's no obligation to participate every week. Just submit for the weeks you can.
.
Q: If I win a week, can I continue to participate?
A: Yes. If it ends up that one person wins multiple weeks, then we'd also take the participant with the second highest vote count for that week to participate in the week 6 final.
.
Q: Are we allowed to add echo or reverb?
A: Yes.
.
Q: Do we have to record in one segment (as in record from start to finish), or can we record some parts one day, some parts the next, and splice it together?
A: Splicing and dicing are allowed.
.
Q: Where should I host my mp3?
A: I will be hosting all the tracks on my own web server. When participants email me the track, I will upload it to my server. I have plenty of bandwidth to burn.
.
Q: Are we allowed to record tracks with harmony on them if we want to?
A: Yes.
.
Q: Is singing a capella allowed? Or with the ORIGINAL track playing very faintly in the background?
A: Yes.

Hey, I'm away this week and have no way of recording, but I'd REALLY like to join the contest.

Is there anyway I could jump in on week 2?

Just want to clarify; in a situation where one individual wins round 2 is that individuale unable to enter rounds 3, 4, and 5?

I see no reason why they can't enter. If it ends up that one person wins multiple weeks, then we'd also take the participant with the second highest vote count for that week to participate in the week 6 final.

I have a few questions:

1: Can we add our own touches to the songs? Like inversions of the voice but still they match with the track?

2: If one does not win in a certain week, can that person participate in the forcoming weeks?

1: If by "inversions of the voice" you mean singing different notes than the original singer, then I think that would be fine. It's your interpretation.

2: Yes!

Are we allowed to add echo or reverb? Adding reverb is normally flattering to the voice, but pretty much everyone does it (omfg even amy lee :o.) Also do we have to record in lump (as in record from start to finish) or can we record some parts one day, some parts the next and splice it together?

I'm waiting for the house to be empty (and my brother to give me MY microphone back) before I record.

So, if one week I decided to do a different song, do I post just that song, or provide the karaoke version for everyone else to try as well?

DhammaSeeker
08-23-2006, 01:41 PM
You're under no obligation to post the karaoke track for others to use. If a participant isn't choosing from one of the 5 provided tracks, they are on their own.

That is correct. The first 5 weeks are open competition. The participants in the last week (week 6) will be only the winners from the first 5 weeks. We'll probably have all 5 sing the same song for week 6.

Erm, week 1 (http://www.evboard.com/showthread.php?t=34445) voting has already begun. But you can enter next week's contest as soon as Dhamma opens it up. He will post 5 song suggestions, but you don't have to do them.

1. Can we send in multiple tracks for the same week?

2. Can we sing a song in a foreign language (not english)?

1. Can we send in multiple tracks for the same week?

Each week (on Monday), a selection of 5 karaoke tracks will be made available to you. Participants get to choose which one of the 5 tracks best suits their taste and range.

I'd say from that rule, only one track is allowed per round. You are allowed to choose outside of those 5 tracks, but keeping it to one submission per week seems fair.

2. Can we sing a song in a foreign language (not english)?

Whatever floats your boat. Although, EvBoarders might be more inclined to vote for something that they can understand clearly as far as language. Either way, it's your choice.

Okay so here's a question. Are duets allowed?

Sure, why not? In the event of said duet winning though, I would say instead of double the prizes being given out, the two winners would most likely have to split the reward.

Well, I not a good singer, but I wanna participate in one contest. This is just gonna be a karaoke contest or you guys are thinking in add more different "contest"?

We will most likely have contests of different kinds after the karaoke contest ends. For example: avatars, banners, graphic arts, writing, etc. We will use this forum to help keep them organized and out of the way in the main COT forum.

If anyone has an idea for an EvBoard contest, please PM me or any moderator. We will take your idea and consider it, but please do not send follow-up PMs asking if we're going to do your contest idea.

Question: does it matter if the audio quality of a track submission is a little less-than-perfect? My microphone can sometimes be a bit temperamental and crackly, but you still 'get the gist', and I don't really want to get a new one.

No. It does not matter. Some people have access to professional recording equipment, some people are recording on their cell phones, some people are using cups and string! It's just a contest for fun and participation of any kind is encouraged.

Xilisoft has a free WMA to Mp3 converter, which does 2 songs per session. I use that a lot.

Also, in SoundForge you can change the Microphone sound intake so it doesn't get as loud and crackly as normal. I use that a lot too.

~Your Future King~

EDIT: Also, I think Mp3 was less spacious than WMA...

I'm only guessing but I'd say that would simply be a case of you recieving half the prize and your friend/buddy or whatever would get...well nothing! :p

I'd say that though because it's a different case than everyone else who has put the effort in by themselves if you get what I mean.

Actually, though I've never done it myself, my understanding is that recording, syncing, and mixing a duet (presumably by 2 people in different locales) is double the effort of a solo performance. ;)

Let's just say that both participants need to be members of evboard. Registration is easy. (http://www.evboard.com/register.php) Do it today! /shameless plug

For this situation, it won't be that much effort, she lives across the street from me, LOL. The only reason I wanted to know was because I wanted her to get credit.

I'll tell her to join, she is a fan of the band, and I know she been lurking around here a couple of times.

Since we allowed CMWYS, it would be illogical to prohibit the remainder. /Spock

If I'm not going to be beaten, I'd like to object to using The Open Door songs. Some people may actually want to wait for the album, and will be unable to vote in the contest as you must listen to ALL the tracks. Just a thought...

Right-o then. I hadn't considered it that way, but Saphira's argument is convincing.

Rule reversed. No TOD tracks other than CMWYS. You'll have to wait for the next karaoke contest to tackle The Open Door.

I've been thinking about this Dhamma, and since we've been getting duets, I want to share my feelings.

I think that if one or both of the participants in a duet has won a previous week, then in addition to the duet winning for the week, I feel that the runner-up should also be included in the final week.

Such as was the case in Week 3, and I thought to bring it up since we might have another duet winning this week. What do you think? I think it's a nice fair way to make it the more the merrier in the final throwdown. Why not give one or two more people the extra chance to prove themselves, eh?

::Prods:: Please consider it?

The karaoke contest is no longer open to individual members. This was the last week to submit. There were no length requirements; however, the only week left is where the winners of the previous weeks will duke it out for the title. Sorry, you'll have to wait until the next one.
