Origin, track 7

Amy Lee says that this song is about loving someone so much that you’d bring them back from the dead. 1 of 5 pre-Fallen songs to ever be played on radio (the other three are Lies, Understanding, a demo version of Whisper and Give Unto Me). Only pre-Fallen song ever performed live on radio.

--
Even In Death

Give me a reason to believe that you're gone
I see your shadow so I know they're all wrong
Moonlight on the soft brown earth
It leads me to where you lay
They took you away from me but now I'm taking you home

[CHORUS:]
I will stay forever here with you
My love
The softly spoken words you gave me
Even in death our love goes on

Some say I'm crazy for my love, Oh my love
But no bonds can hold me from your side, Oh my love
They don't know you can't leave me
They don't hear you singing to me

[Chorus]

And I can't love you, anymore than I do

Lyrics by: A. Lee, B. Moody, D. Hodges

At the end of the song Amy says: "People die, but real love is forever".
THis is actually from the ending of the Movie "The Crow"

It's a Voiceover and it says something along the lines of "Fires Burn, Buildings Fall, People Die...But Real Love is forever."

Anywhen its good to know that i'm not the only person that can image the video!!! I do it with a lot of evanescence songs!! I imaged this women dressed in a white dress, (kinda ripped at the ends) with wild black hair, stumbling through a graveyard ( if you've seen the White Stripe's video for Blue Orchid (think thats the name) the women is kinda like the women in that!!)!! Very dark and eerie!!! I have a very ober active imagination + the song is so detailed you can't help but imagine it!!!

This is one of my favorites, but really there all so spectacular. The whole quote from The Crow goes ""If the people we love are taken from us, the way they live on is to never stop loving them. Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever." Though at the end of this song i believe it goes "My darling real love is forever"

I just finished reading Wuthering Heights and the more i think about it the way Heathcliff is so passionate for Catherine, that he dug up her own grave just to see her, this song kind of goes with that theme. If anyone knows what i'm talking about please respond.

Wow, that is pretty interesting about the whole ending part. I hadn't known/noticed that (I've seen the Crow a few times)... That's pretty cool, but this is one of my favorite Evanescence songs. I kind of wish it made it's way to Fallen, just so every Evanescence fan could hear it.

I love this video, think its far and away the best version of the song i've heard. Its also slightly touching when Amy and Ben stand centre-stage together, him shredding and her singing. Its just a poignant reminder of what we won't see from the band ever again.

You know, there was something familiar about the opening of Even In Death, but I could never figure out what it was. Then I thought back to a show I used to watch when babysitting my cousins. It was this kids show called Roughnecks, which was a g-rated version of the Starship Troopers film, basically. I downloaded an episode, and the sound effects of Even In Death are at some points identical to the closing music of that show. Does anyone know if Ev sampled from that show? Or maybe its just a coincidence?

Isn't it, "I will die, but real love is forever" ...?

Ghetto Fabalus

^That's what I used to think it was, but everyone kept saying it's "People die," so I was like, "o. okay." Personally I like "I will die" better. More dramatic?

Nope. It just sounds similar.

Or I could be completely wrong and it could be "I will die"

Either way, IT was influenced by The Crow.

This song reminds me of a Episode of Masters of Horror... I forget the title of the Ep but if anybody's seen it you probably know what I'm talking about... Its about a lady and her lover who is a dead...It's pretty twisted...It was written by Clive Barker

Is it just me or does Amy sound like Janet Jackson in this song? I'm not playing she really does. I love both their voices so it is interesting. This song makes me think of my broken heart. So sad.

You know, some people say there is a chior in the chorus, like when they performed this at Rock Am Ring 2003. And some say that you can't hear the chorus in this song that well. But I disagree with both, there is no chior on the "Origin" version and I can hear the chorus perfectly.

Everytime I hear this I get "people die, but real love LASTS forever", I keep seeing is on here and it annoys me, even though theres a slight possiblity that Im wrong, although I'd still think "last" would be better either way

I don't hear an "l" sound. Or a "t" sound. Plus the word is kind of a bit too long to be "lasts" (since she pauses between "real love" and "is/lasts").

Oh I know! I got so many music videos written for so many songs... lol. Ones like: "So Close," "The End (Outro)," "Give Unto Me (Both Versions)," "Forgive Me," "Field Of Innocence," "Even In Death," "Anywhere," "Eternal," "Haunted," "Tourniquet," "Before The Dawn," and "Bleed (I Must Be Dreaming). lol. A lot.

Here's my concept of the video: The text in light blue is the video.

Intro to the video is that we hear a faint eerie choir with and “Ooh” type of noise as someone is walking in a misty/foggy cemetery with a flow-ful white dress on blowing in the wind, along with her jet black, long hair. The camera goes into a close up of her running her hand over the top and front of a tombstone. As this is happening you can hear the wind howling and blowing. You hear faint eerie bells and static. They flow into the intro to “Even In Death.” The first six seconds shows a candle lit room with shadows dancing on the wall with the dancing flames.

Give me a reason to believe that you’re gone [As Amy starts to sing “Give me a reason...” you can only see the left side of her face on the screen.]
I see your shadow so I know they’re all wrong [As she goes into singing “I see you’re shadow” there is a shadow of someone along the wall and a sound as though someone was walking fast. When she sees the shadow she jerks her head in the direction of the shadow. As she sings “So I know they’re all wrong” you can see her get up and walk past the camera in the white flow-ful dress. Then you see her walking through a dark yard.]
Moonlight on the soft brown earth [As the moonlight on the soft brown earth leads her to where the loved one lays you see her walking into the entrance of an eerie graveyard and you see a moon on the top of the screen
It leads me to where you lay and the moonlight shows brown earth and shows the freshly covered gave site as she walks towards it.]
They took you away from me but now I’m taking you home [As she is singing this line she is kneeling on the fresh dirt and looking at the tombstone.]

I will stay forever here with you, my love [As she sings these words she is closer to the tombstone and she is stroking it in an order of someone grieving uncontrollably over the lose of this loved one.]
The softly spoken words you gave me [Her forehead is now resting on the front of the tombstone with her left hand on the dirt and her right palm flat on the front of the tombstone, with her eyes closed, as she sings “The softly spoken...” When she starts to sing “...Words you gave me” she opens her eyes and lifts her head up.]
Even in death our love goes on [As this line is sung she moves back a little from where she was and sings this line with a grieving look on her face.]

Some say I’m crazy for my love, hmm my love (my love) [The camera is now a few feet away and Amy is now standing as she sings this line.]
But no bonds can hold me from your side, ha-ah my love [As she sings the word “Bonds” she falls to her knees and hits the dirt with her fists and she does in the “Everybody’s Fool” video.]
They don’t know you can’t leave me [She is now in the crouching stance with her left hand on
They don’t hear you singing to me the ground and she is crawling slowly back to the tombstone.]

I will stay forever here with you, my love [She has her hand on the front of the tombstone again and supports herself as she turns and puts her back onto the front of it with her knees up and her elbows resting on them.]
The softly spoken words you gave me [With her back still on the tombstone she looks up at the moonlight sky.]
Even in death our love goes on [As she sings this line she is now looking to the left and gradually through-out the line she moves her head and looks forward.]
And I can’t love you anymore than I do, ahhh [She is now supporting herself to turn to the tombstone again and the words “And I can’t..” are sung. When “...Love you anymore...” she is kissing the tombstone. As the words “...Than I do, ahhh” come up Amy sings them. When she sings “Ahhha” she goes down to hit the dirt again and as the symbols of the drum set sounds her fists hit the ground.]

2:26-3:23 [After she hits the ground she stays there for a few seconds then comes up with tears streaming down her face. She gets up and walks around the back of the tombstone and to the left side she is looking at the dirt and tombstone. She then sits and is resting her elbows on her knees and her head in her arms she is mourning the death of this loved one. As she is sitting there crying the loved one slowly appears into view but is the faint, foggy color of the mythical ghosts and comes over to her and kneels down and puts his arms around her and kisses, what’s showing of, her cheek. Amy knows he is there because of the cold presence that is felt. She looks up and knows he is there and looks where we see him. As we hear the guitars and the drums we can see the band playing some ways away from the site that we are seeing. Amy and the loved one are still in view. We can also see a small choir standing there next to the band but aren’t singing yet.]

I will stay forever here with you, my love [We can see the party of the choir take a breath as amy gets up, follows the loved one, and starts to sign again. But this time it’s to the loved one’s spirit that she can now see and is following. Through out the lines we can hear the faint choir singing a beautiful but eerie “Ooh” at certain parts.]
The softly spoken words you gave me [She is showing great emotion and is still crying. As she is singing “The softly spoken...” she does the thing with her left arm and brings it to her chest as she does at most live performances. As “...Words you gave me” are sung she pulls her right arm up and makes a fist as doing this action and put is to her head, closes her eyes, and brings her other hand up wile making a half fist and lightly grazing the left side of her head near the top.]
Even in death our love goes on [As these words are sung she is still crying and throws her arms down and then back up to show emotion and then back down showing she is serious about this line.]
And I can’t love you anymore than I do [As this line is sung you can now see Amy the part of the graveyard the faint, foggy spirit and the dead tree next to the grave site. The spirit of the loved one is hovering over the middle of the site and is looking at Amy. We’ve seen her walking toward to camera with her head down. She turns to face the spirit of the loved one and sings the line.]

“People die, but real love, is forever.” [Then we see Amy mouth the words to the quote and then the spirit of the loved one apparates away. We see Amy turn back towards the camera and look towards it as though looking at something that caught her eye. The camera fades out.]

this whole song reminds me of "Wuthering Heights." How heathcliff is obsessed with Catherine after she dies. Catherine haunts him to no end as he keeps seeing her in the shadows
"Give me a reason to believe that you're gone
I see your shadow so I know they're all wrong"
At one point he lies in her coffin
"Moonlight on the soft brown earth
It leads me to where you lay
They took you away from me but now I'm taking you home"

I will stay forever here with you my love
The softly spoken words you gave me
Even in death our love goes on

It completely reminds me of "Even in death." An excellent novel by Emily bronte

This is definitely the most descriptive song. I can actually "see" the song as it's played. It reminds me of a dark hill in a cemetary at night. It makes me think about the death of a friend of mine. I miss her.:( :( :(

It makes me think about the death of a friend of mine. I miss her.:( :( :(

I just recently lost 2 of my friends. They were cousins. One died on the 5th of September in a motorcycle accident, he was 19, and the other, he was 14, committed suicide about 5 or 6 days after because he lost his best friend and couldn't live without him. The second one wasn't really a friend I just knew him from the friend who died in the motorcycle accident.

I'm sorry for your lose. Did she die this year?

I read this on wikipedia:
The intro to "Even in Death" is basically the same intro to White Zombie's "Ratfinks, Suicide Tanks and Cannibal Girls" which was released four years prior.

When I first heard this song, I thought, "That beginning scares the shit outta me, but it's kick-ass!" Then, I heard the rest of it and it brought me to tears; the power and emotion in her voice made me feel as though I'd really lost a loved one. One of my favorite romantic Evanescence songs and one of my favorites off Origin, too!

I'm a n00b when it comes to Origin, but days after I first heard those songs, I'm still kicking myself for not listening sooner. Is the intro of "Even in Death" sort of related to that of "Snow White Queen"? I know they are very different, but I just get reminded of SWQ everytime I hear that synth sound. I heard they play this live sometimes? Anyway, I like this song a lot.

Actually in "Snow White Queen" is some kind of organ or guitar with a lot of effects and a loop on it.

In "Even In Death" they're just effects made with a sound board.

yeah I think it could be an obsessive love but I can't entirely agree with you since my aunt passed away and everytime I hear this song I remember her and I wish she'd still be here with us and I love her and everything but I'm not obsessed... but of course it's only been 2 months since her death, if in 2 years I keep remembering her with pain then maybe I am obsessed XD
