Hey guys. I searched but did not find anything so here goes.
Who is your favorite author/authors and what types of books do you enjoy reading? I basically read books from a bunch of different authors (mostly horror writers though) I guess I don't have a lot of time for reading but when I do Stephen King and Richard Laymon are my first choices.~Silvermist~

Anne McCaffrey. she is fucking awesome, in my opinion, she writes the best Sci-fi/fantasy books.
her most famous books are probably "The Dragonriders Of Pern" books, thats what hooked me onto her writting.
her son Todd McCaffrey is now continuing the series but instead of it being the 1st/6th/9th pass of Pern, hes writting in the 3rd. ;)
my favourite books by her would be either the dragonriders or "The Tower And The Hive"
those 5 books were amazing :)

CHUCK PALAHNIUK. Invisible Monsters, Fight Club, Choke, Diary . . . basically every book he's written, I've loved. :3

DARREN SHAN. The Cirque Du Freaks series! Mmmvampires.<3

JKROWLING. Harry Potter series. I'm a huge HP nerd . . . so, yeah.

Fantasy and horror books always appeal to me. Books that are very strange, make you think, and go WTF also do too [Chuck Palahniuk's good for that]. :D

My favourite author of all time would be a man by the name of David Icke. He is basically about as fringe as one gets conspiracy-theory wise. He argues that the world is controlled by a reptilian race of somesort that passes themselves off as human. If you are at all curious about this, I highly recommend the book Children of the Matrix. But I will warn ya, don't get it if you are not willing to seriously question your own religious beliefs and beliefs about reality itself.

For political, I highly recommend 1984 by George Orwell.

I also enjoy reading books by the old acidtrippers like Timothy Leary and Robert Anton Wilson...they are really "out there" like Icke, but quite fascinating.

Other than the above mentioned authors, I really like Stephen King. He is truely awesome. Insomnia being my favourite book by him. I also like Louis L'amour. (I've read most of his books, i think. i always like a good western every now and then.) and I like a bunch of other stuff too like Harry Potter, Star Trek, etc. lol

[edit] Tolkien as well! *Can't believe I forgot Lord of the Rings!*

I'd say I far prefer books over movies or tv.

I absolutely love fantasy! My favorite book of all time - The Last Unicorn, by Peter S. Beagle. This book really is a fantasy classic, and I highly recomend it. The story is beautiful and sad, with a sprinkling of humor and some neat allusions.
I also like humorous fantasy - my favorite in this subgenre would be the Xanth series by Piers Anthony. Has anyone else ever heard of him? He writes some funny stuff, and it's even funnier if you live in Florida like I do, because the author himself is from FL and based his magical land on our odd state. Xanth is a fantasy land w/ humans and magical creatures just like many others you will find in books, but the unique idea behind it is that every human has a special power, a "magic talent." Instead of there being just wizards and mortals, everyone has something, which means things a whole lot more interesting. The other distinguishing feature of Xanth is that everything is literal - for example, a nightmare is actually a horse. The series is full of hidden jokes, innuendo, and an endless supply of puns. I reccomend it to those who like humor and fantasy. The two combine suprisingly well in this series, because fantasy allows you to have an unbridled imagination. The neat thing about the author is that he has such a connection w/ his fans, they send him ideas and puns they have thought of and he includes many of them in his stories. One girl (Jenny) who was a big fan was hit by a drunk driver and paralyzed, so Piers Anthony began writing to her and even made her a character in the series.

She really is great with the imagery... her writing is just so sensual. I got all sad when I heard blood canticle is the last of the vampire chronicles. I guess it makes sense since Stan Rice died. I wonder if she's sold the house yet. I knew it was up for sale... but I never heard if it got sold. I should go visit her website. I haven't been there in forever. I don't know... of the annie rice fans I know, I'm possibly the ONLY one that doesn't love it only for the cult/vampire aspects of it. I'll love the philosphy and the general themes. Who knows... I'm odd... but I've loved her work since 3rd grade.

I love her work. And My sweet Audrina and the Dawn series are awesome. I think my favorit is the Dollanganger series and not just because Flowers In The Attic became a movie. I don't know why but I just love it. Either way it makes my parents mad because I have so many books and no place to put them. VC Andrews, Anne Rice, Dean Koontz, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Stephen Kind alone fill up 3 book cases. But I'm happy because now they want to give me a library. So then my manga can go onto shelves too.

Sure have, i liked them as they actually combined quite a bit of 'fact' in them amongst the fictional story, for example the sabbats. I liked them up until the last one that i read, i think it was 15 or something???? The one with morgan's daughter, i didn't like it. Heh, probably i just didnt like it from not Morgan's perspective and her daughter was a bitch, although i liked the ones from Hunter. wow i forgot those books existed.

I loved the Vampire Chronicles. Actually, i'm still reading them, awesome books. Yay for Anne Rice.

Diana Gabaldon - Cross Stitch (but its called Outlander in some places) is the first in a BRILLIANT series.

Jean Auel - The Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of Horses were wicked, then they slowly got worse in my opinion.

Tolkein (duh)

John Marsden - The Tomorrow Series, plus all the other books he's written Checkers, So Much to Tell You etc. Letters from the Inside was great. Has anyone read the Elle Chronicles? they come after the Tomorrow series, i haven't read any yet.

Anne McCaffrey - i've only read a couple of her books but they were great.

When I was younger i really loved Tamora Pierce, they are great books for maybe 12 - 14 years i think. Really cool storylines, especially the Alanna series.

Dean Koontz - I'm really getting into his books at the moment, more so than Stephen King. I jsut read The Taking and now im reading one called The Face i think...

I am missing heaps i'm sure... but in general they are my favourite authors :D

Oh and i saw the movie of Misery when i was younger, haven't read the book but i heard it was really good.

EDIT: How could i get the Da Vinci Code? it was fantastic. Oh and i once read a book called Sabriel by Garth Nix, i haven't been able to find the sequel. Once a bought a book for a dollar at the Warehouse called 'The Forbidden Game' by L. J. Smith. It was a really good book. hmmm i forgot about that book too. dammit. too many good books in the world. i need to read more.

Oh and biography wise, read Heavier than Heaven, a biography of Kurt Cobain. okay now thats not about an author.. oh well.

Stephen King

J.R.R. Tolkien- because he didnt just write LOTR and The Hobbit, he created an entire world, complete with entire histories and cultures. that trilogy was just the tip of the iceburg for him.

E.L. Doctorow- Billy Bathgate. about a kid who grew up in the prohebition era and dreamed of becoming part of the overly glorified mob scene. he gets himself trusted by a mob boss named Dutch Schultz, which turns out to not be the origional, but still just as dangerous. i thought it was intersting how the book was narrated. Doctorow doesnt have Bathgate describe any emotional reaction to even the more violent scenes. and the lack there of just makes it more shocking because you fall back on your own. after a while you realize the narration is comming from him as an adult, and though it never says outright, its implied that he never actualy got out of the business.

last but not least, Douglas Adams- The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy :D. do i need any further explanation?
for those of you with the misfortune of not being familiar with this story, this whole series is like Star Trek on crack. funny as hell. if Robin Williams, Mel Brooks, and Monty Python were to team up and write a sience fiction, this would be the result.

the main characters's stolen ship ran in an 'improbably drive'. it functions on the basis of Murphy's law, rather than the laws of physics. Murphy's law states that whatevers more improbable, will probably happen. so this improbability drive calculates the odds of the ship jumping to the other end of the universe for no apparent reason, and suddenly itll happen. but it also does other stuff.

2 missiles are headed toward the ship. they fire up the improbability drive. one of the missiles turns into a sperm whale, the other into a bowl of petunias. and Adams proceeds to describe the last thoughts of the whale as it tries to comprehend its own existance, including "whats that comming toward me? ill call it 'ground'. i wonder if it would be friends with me.."
but he doenst stop there. he described that the last thoughts of the bowl of petunias were "oh no, not again..". apparently it carried the reincarnated soul of a creature that the main character keeps accidently killing without realizing it.

i could put all that in context for you, but i probably wouldnt make any more sense. its great :)

Personally I love any mystical magical books, like Harry Potter. My Favorite authors are J.K. Rowling, Anne McCaffrey, C.S. Lewis, and Eoin Colfer. All of them write series on something rather magical based.

All of the authors you mentioned and the books are amazing. I love A Clockwork Orange. It's among my favorites. It is written oddly, but like other's it's oddities serve a purpose. I remember I used to read that novel over and over and over again. I never tired of it. Now that I'm thinking about it I should reread it, but I'm somewhat afraid to. I've read it so many times that the binding is getting messed up.

I also love stuff by Flannery O'Connor and Edgar Allen Poe although, admittedly, I don't really read their stuff that much lately. Oh and I also read some really good books from some Tales of the Otori series by Liam Hearn (I THINK that's his name) about feudal Japan (well, they are really in a fictitious setting that just CLOSELY resembles feudal Japan haha). I haven't read for pleasure in QUITE some time b/c I'm in graduate school and always busy reading my (in general) 1,000+ pages of homework per week (that's just the reading part of the homework..not the research for and writing of papers and everything else..blah)..ahem..but I'm on vacation now for 2 more weeks so I want to buy some new books to read for pleasure. I just finished reading Jung Chang's memoir/historical account of China around the time of the Cultural Revolution called "Wild Swans" which was reaaaally good and fascinating and sad.

Adeline Yen Mah-her books chinese cinderella and falling leaves. What makes them so sad and gripping is that you can't say to yourself "oh it's only a book it's not real" because every word of it is real and it must have been so hard for her growing up.

Charlotte Bronte (yeah old fashioned I know)- Jane Eyre is probably the best book I've ever read.

Charles de Lint.
He is the best author ever. If you have never heard of him, GO CHECK HIM OUT NOW! He won the World Fantasy Award, and has out a bunch of collections out including "Waifs and Strays". Also, he recently wrote a book called "The Blue Girl". He has also written books like "The Riddle of the Wren". That was a good book. It reminded me a lot of LOTR.

Flowers In The Attic was a horrible movie compared to the book. It was all wrong. I don't have that many books, but I have a library very close to mah house and a friend who owns pretty much every book I've ever wanted to read...

I think manga is fun...

I Know! They completely screwed up the book. Which is why I don't like people thinking I like the book just because of the movie. Anyway, I love your avatar. My Sweet Audrina is possibly my favorite of the VC Andrew's novels even if it doesn't have a series. I wish I had friends like yours but mine generally don't like to read all that much. And the library here is of no use.

My two favorite are Anne Rice and V.C. Andrews. I know most of you know who Anne Rice is. (duh) But if you're not familiar with V.C. Andrews, she wrote Flowers In The Attic. It was turned into a movie sometime in the 80's I believe. She also has a book called My Sweet Audrina.

The type of books I like to read are horror stories and murder stories. ;)

Well, it used to be Jk Rowling until I realized harry potter sucks. no offense to any fan out there. I tried to be into Anne Rice but it didn't work out, the books aren't even scary or enough disgusting/gory for me. My fave book is The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler. So Carolyn Mackler I guess. And Poe of course.

I love both Anne Rice and V.C. Andrews. I've loved them since I can remember. I love My Sweet Audrina. I didn't use to... I used to have to just stop reading it and put it away... but it's now my favorite of her books. And the Dollangager series. I didn't like the movie based on Flowers In The Attic. It was too disappointing.

My favorite author is William Gibson. (see sig)

I've posted about him a bunch of times here before. Lemme recap ...

He invented the word "Cyberspace", and forsaw the internet.
He's considered a forefather of much of what is common in Scifi today (The Matrix, etc.)
I collect hardback copies of his books, some in 1st editions.
I got to meet him at a signing about 2 years ago, and he signed my copies of "Pattern Recognition" and "Burning Chrome" (which is very rare in hardback).

Oh yeah ... I'm a big scifi geek.

Sounds interesting, i have to have alook. I love books that wont let you put them down. Its like that with J.K Rowling's books, but the only problem i get is getting into the book takes me ages to get into the book and when i dont i usually end up not finishing it or forgetting about it. A problem i have... grr

Phillip Pullman, I love His Dark Materials Trilogy and it's being made into a film

Really?? when/where did you learn that? It will be so awesome if his books became movies... especially if they are GOOD movies (like LotR or something) and not poorly made ones that flop at the boxoffice.

I like Tamora Pierce (Anyone read her new books about Alianne?? They're awesome... nearly halfway done with the 2nd one... don't spoil it please), Philip Pullman, Lynne Ewing (Daughters of the Moon series) as well as a bunch of other fantasy books I can't think of right now. Oh yeah, and JK Rowling. How could I forget her??? And J.R.R. Tolkien, too, even tho I've only seen the movies. Don't have time to read the books right now even though everyone says I should.

I also like other authors too, of other random books that aren't fantasy. I'm always into trying new books at people's recommendations. One that sticks out in my mind is Gone With the Wind, which is TOTALLY different from the movie. Can't think of the author's name right now, but that book was cool. So was a lot of other American Literature. As well as the author S.E. Hinton (The Outsiders) and Lois Lowry (The Giver).

Hey..another good reason to read it is there's going to be a movie based on the book coming out next December I think...Starring Zhang Ziyi from Crouching Tiger, Hero, and House of the Flying Daggers (amongst other things) as Sayuri/Chiyo, the main char. of the book.

My Favourite author is Terry Pratchett. His books are comical and merge a lord of the rings fantasy world with modern day ideas in a medieval era. Like a vampire camera man who uses flash photography which is lethal to him as it turns him into a pile of ash. To bring him back to life the vampire caries a little bottle of blood around his neck which he has to rely on bystanders to pour on him!
When people die, or get seriously injured, you can tell the persons injuries were fatal if the speach of another character is capitalised. This character is death and it's always funny when death appears in the book, because you're never sure if someone is dead and when something like, "OH DEAR, THAT WAS A BIT OF A NASTY FALL" suddenly appears THEN you know:) . Pratchett does it more subtle than that though!

Does anyone else here read Terry Pratchett?

In response to Spiderfall I love Terry Pratchett too, the last one about the post office was very funny! I once met him at a book signing and I got really excited I was bouncing round like Tigger!

My other favourite authers are Laurell K Hamilton, Robin Hobb and her alter ego Megan Lindholm, Anne Rice, J K Rowling, Richard Layman and Sophie Kinsella (brilliant for Chic lit), My book cases are actually spilling out to piles on the floor now I think I need a tidy up!

George Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series (starting with Game of Thrones) is some of the best fantasy I've ever read with some of the best characters.

Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters trilogy is also right at the top for me. The books are very emotional and really make you feel close to the characters. Son Of The Shadows (book 2) actually put me in mind of My Immortal.

I also really like alot of Robin Hobb's work.

I love these two authors. Their works are very original, inspiring, and powerful. Once you've read 1984 you're outlook on society will never be the same again. And Garth Nix should recieve MUCH more praise then he gets. He's earned it. Hands down one of the best fantasy, sci-fi writers of all time. ^ I read a book by Dean Koontz once...was it Lightening? I can't remember, but it was about time travel - a guy comes from the 1940's during the war, to present day, this chick is married to some guy who sends her frogs and they have a son called Chris, anyway Stefan, the guys name is, the time travel guy, he keeps going back in time because these bad guys also time travel, and are trying to change the past to change the future, and make it so Hitler won the war, and they have to try and stop it.
Awesome book, I loved it, especially at the end, with all the time travel when the lady and Chris are being chased by the bad guys, and Stefan has to go back and forth in time to save them...:)

I really like Marya Hornbacher, even though I've only read her book "Wasted." I'd like to read "The Center Of Winter," her first novel. I like her style in "Wasted," of course it was a memoir, so it was probably a lot more raw and real than what it would be like in "The Center Of Winter," as that one is fiction.

I like Dean Koontz too. My favorite from him is "Velocity." That one really sucked me in.
