What are you lots favourite horror movies?
Even though it was low budget and a lot of people had nothing good to say about it, i was genuinly freaked out by the blair witch project when i was watching it rather late and had to desperately venture to the bathroom.
I've seen hellraiser and candyman and all that and havent found them that scary so does anyone have any suggestions of REALLY scary films?

i hate to admit but scary movies aren't what they used to be.. i remember when halloween and friday the 13th scared the shit outta me. i dunno..maybe because i was like 12 but still.. i guess my fav horror flick that recently came out was freddy vs. jason. i liked that movie lots! another that messed with my head was signs.. just for the fact that it seemed so real. but i dunno if that would be classified as horror.. OK i'm shutting up now lol

Honestly, I can't really think of any movie that's really truly scared me...like made me jump, cuz they always give away what's going to happen with the music. Some horror flicks I enjoyed though were Poltergeist, The Frighteners, Waxwork, Carrie, Fright Night, Jeepers Creepers and so on.

I thought Signs was great BTW. Even though it's not a slasher style horror flick, M. Night Shyamalan does a great job in his films of creeping you out without having to get all gory. He's working on a new film to be released next year. Can't wait :)

Yeah i thought jeepers creepers was a really good film, it wasnt incredibly scary but in a sense it was if that makes ANY sense.
I like the part at the end where the demon thingy mibob is looking through that nifty little hole where his eye once was, ahhhh.
Most horror movies have a way of 'working out' in the end in that the move itself is one big scary chase and the ending is disapointing in the sense that nothing really comes off the story. It's like they have a good plot and waste it, they dont stretch its potential. At least jeepers creepers DIDNT work out well in the end, people died but it wasnt a gorefest and that's what made it work.

Okay. So, I know you're looking for scary films here, but I feel the need to mention Bleeders. It tells the story of a couple going to an island to find out more about the man's ancestry because he has some weird heart disease or something.
Little does everyone know, underneath the island in the sewer/cave/things, live scores of inbred mutant hermaphrodites who feast on the flesh of the dead. While, since it is an island, the island-folk are soon forced to ship the newly dead to the mainland for lack of room in the cemetary, causing the inbred mutant hermaphrodites to search for food elsewhere.

DUNDUNDUN.

So of course they start attacking and eating live people. How they accomplish this, I don't understand. They are mutant inbred hermaphrodites. They walk on their asses because they don't have legs. I think I could run away from one if it tried to get me. But then, I am not a resident of Retard Island.
Yeah. I only rented it because the cover looked scary. The movie is supposed to be scary. But when the first scene is a love scene between a brother and sister, and you throw inbred mutant hermaphrodites into the mix... you cease to be scary and just become downright funny.

Scary movies... I really liked the Poltergeist ones, Friday the 13th, Halloween... but I don't really think they'd scare me now.

anyone else like Identity?

abearatemyparents
10-04-2003, 04:28 PM
I don't think Identity counts as horror.

Why has no one mentioned Evil Dead?

Only two movies ever realyl scarred me, one was Stephen King's It, I'm sure it's really lame now but I saw it when I was five or something . The other one, Willly Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. I'm terrified of Oompa Loompas.

Did anyone catch The Eye? Like Ring, a Japanese horror movie soon to be remade in the US. It got limited release here a few months ago. I liked it. Or how about Audition? Another great Japanese movie by Takeshi Miike.

edit- I forgot Night Of The Living Dead and all those other George Romero movies.

Also, I hated The Blair Witch Project.

i've studied the evil dead series in depth and i have to say that they pwn all. that's my expert opinion. i have a hard time deciding whether i like the first of second one best, tho. cenematically, i like 1. but it's hard to beat the hand bit + the chainsaw...

also, has anyone seen brainscan? edward furlong, 6-8 yrs ago i guess. that movie had a pretty good soundtrack. i really liked it.

and about the blair witch project...i know a lot of ppl hate this movie, but from the stand point of an amateur filmmaker, i hafta say that blair witch is a thing of beauty.
This film was in the Guinness Book Of World Records for Top Budget:Box Office Ratio" (for a mainstream feature film). The film cost $22,000 to make and made back $240.5 million, a ratio of $1 spent for every $10,931 made.

The Ring is the best horror movie I think I have ever had the pleasure of watching. It was terrifying! I'm sure people who saw it at home first won't agree with me. I liked it best because the story was so deep. It wasn't just about a tape that kills you in seven days. It was much more than that. My favorite slasher movie is either Urban Legend or I Know What You Did Last Summer. I was never into those 80s movies that had gore with a side or horror i.e. Friday the 13th, Freddy Movies, ect. Cube was also a really good movie. Oh, and the movie that Evanescence took those clips from in some of their earlier songs. Damn, I can't remember the name of it. I must remember! :x

Evil dead is teh kewlest.

I have no idea what "pwn" means, forgive me, I am trying to be cool. And failing...

Anyhoo - scary movies. Has anyone seen a film called "The Premature burial" starring Ray Milland? It was made in 19mindyoueownbusiness and was (rather predictably) about a guy who was buried alive. It was also the first real horro film I ever saw...

I featured these two gravediggers who lept whistling "Cockles and mussels" all the time... I didn't sleep for weeks. Seriously, it scared the living crap out of me... ( I was only about 7 or 8 when I saw it... to this day I think that my parents letting me watch it was tantamount to child abuse)

Years later, I was in a music class in high school and the teacher said we were going to sing "Cockles and Mussels". I tried... but the memories came flooding back...

"In Dublins fair city, where girls are so pretty
I first laid my eyes on sweet Molly Malone..."

I swear to fucking GOD I ran from the class in terror.

I am sooooooo weak.... :?

Really? You thought it was terrifying? I dunno, that movie just did nothing for me personally. It had all this hype about it like it was the best thing since the invention of toilet paper, and I was really let down when I finally saw it. I was all excited to finally be getting a chance to see it too :( I realize I'm definitely in the minority here about my opinion of The Ring, so I shall shut up now :)

"pwn" is a derivitive of "own," which in the implied context means to dominate as if in competition.

ex. let's say that you and i are playing chess. and i lose. badly. i could say that you "pwned" me.

this may vary from person to person, but when i use this word in conversation (yes, i'm that much of a dork), i would pronounce it pone.

Oh, Jumping Johnny Jesus... people have actually thought about this enough for it to have a definition.. Not only that, but a definition that has made a virtue out of being unable to spell a very basic word... (my previous mis-spellings this evening do not count, I am exceptionally drunk. Again. ;) )

To get things back on topic, greatest horror movie of all time - THE THING. I hope everyone here has seen it, John carpenter at his absolute best. HOTC was possibly one of the most screwed up cinematic undertakings in history. Props to Rob Zombie. Great movie.

I personally like Final Destination and FD 2. However, they center almost solely around people making violent and untimely . . . er, exits. I don't know that this storyline constitutes "horror," per se.

Jeepers Creepers was pretty good, though i dont know of any movies that REALLy scare me. Ive been to desensitised (sp?) by the world around me to give a thought to the scariness

Ally, i was screaming so hard because Ab's hand was on my leg and she was squeezing it pretty damn hard, it had nothing whatsoever to do with that freaky, deformed woman with those freak ass eyes, okay, so there was ONE scary part. The woman in the film was trying to hard to show off her clevage and look sexy to be a convincing victim and besides that was candyman 4....contrary to the tone of voice i used above in reality, i love you in a non sexual way.

Mine is rather old but it still cared the poopies right out of me although the book is much scarier. Rosemary's Baby. The transformation Mia Farrow makes in it is rather startling, Of course if I would have had to eat raw chicken and meat while I was preggers I don't think I would've been glowing either, :D
Carrying the spawn of Satan sure must've been tough on her :P
The whole plot to this movie just scared me.
I had never seen it until a few months ago, but I must say it registered in my mind similar as the Omen movies and those scared me too. Just the subject matter. Movies about the Devil and satanism have always frightened me. .
The first time I saw the Exorcist I had nightmares for a week straight! Prince of Darkness, too.
Signs straight made me scream when the alien was in the living room. My kids all thought I was stupid cuz they weren't scared at all. All the Alien movies had me shaking for a while after.
The Nightmare on Elm street movies 1-3 scared me pretty good too.
I have to be pretty careful what horror flicks I watch. I have a very over-active imagination. They give me horrible nightmares that last for weeks on end. :x

Yea, The Ring, did nothing to really scare me. It's the Japanese version that pwns all. It's originally a Japanese book with became a Japanese movie, and then the Americans ran out of ideas for movies and created The Ring. Ringu is wayyyy better, and in my opinion, scarier.

I really love The Ring. It wasn't scary in the least bit but it was really creepy and I liked the plot. I kind of prefer the american version to the japanese, though, and the book really reminded me of something Michael Crichton would come up with minus technobabble.

Signs freaked the crap out of me and I love the movie to pieces. When they were in the house... I really like the kind of horror that leaves things to your imagination. It freaks me out way more than the in your face boring slasher movie.

Yes exactly. That's what I loved about Signs. The director basically made parts like that get into your head so to speak and made ya freak yourself out with your own imagination. Now that's cool ;) He's also really good at using sound to freak you out. Like the aliens running around on the roof of the house, or them rummaging through the upstairs of the house when they get in, glass breaking and so on...Or when they started hearing all those weird noises on that baby monitor. That was cool :)

Well, I do agree that the Evil Dead movies pwn all. :D

As does The Thing.

The only horror movie I've seen that got a pretty good rise out of me was probably Event Horizon, mostly because I wasnt expecting a horror movie when I went a nd saw at the theaters, neither was my sister and she still hates me for it. Especially the string up scene, which was really cool.

I recently saw Dead Alive (well recently as in, about two months ago) and GOOD FREAKIN' GOD, I have NEVER seen a movie with this much blood. It was a severly fuc*ed up film. Not saying it was bad, I kinda liked it. It just had an ass ton of blood (ie. Man walks into crowd of undead with lawnmower blades exposed and by the end of it he can barely keep his balance because it's so slippery:D ). If you can find it, I recommend it, I saw it on IFC, so it may come on again. Best part of the movie: Priest going after zombies, or, as he put it, "I kick ass for the lord!".

Edit: Forgot to add that I've seen some pretty funny reactinos to the spider walk sequence from the re-release of The Exorcist. My friend was watching it and when it came on, see screamed and jump out of her seat, much hilarity. :D

Did anyone but those two guys that liked it see House Of 1000 Corpses? Cause I hope I'm not the only one that didn't like it. I don't know about today, but back then, when I was eight or nine, I would say the scariest movie I ever saw was Exorcist. That movie gave me nightmares for months! And, if you believe in possession; like I did back then, It scares me even more cause I thought it could happen in real life! My sister knew this (she's older then me), well, she played this one prank on me that scared the living hell out of me!! She'd turn off all the lights and imitate the girl's voice in Exorcist;with my adolencence mind, I was extremely golible. Well.. Lets just say she scared me so much that I was hiding in my room's closet with a loaded nerf gun in one hand and a plastic bat in the other.

Currently "The Ring" is the scariest and best horror movie ever imho. I also really love "Signs" and "the Sixth Sense" b/c M. Knight S--(won't bother trying to spell it) kicks ass. I loved "Dawn of the Dead" though it was more funny than scary to me. Umm...as for movies from my childhood that scared the bejesus out of me "The Gate" and "Poltergeist" prolly take the cake overall.

The scariest movie that I have ever seen is Flatliners. It was directed by Joel Schumacher and it's about some medical students who stop their hearts for fun. They have near-death experiences, but things they see from the past during them, like the evil things, begin to cross the line between death and life and attack them in real life. I was terrified while watching this movie. I'd reccomend it to anyone.

Yea, The Ring, did nothing to really scare me. It's the Japanese version that pwns all. It's originally a Japanese book with became a Japanese movie, and then the Americans ran out of ideas for movies and created The Ring. Ringu is wayyyy better, and in my opinion, scarier.

Ringu ,IMO, sucked. To me it looked EXTREMELY low-budget. I bought it at Circuit City and it dissapointed me severely. Ringu wasn't that scary; They had no special effects other than the girl coming out of the TV.

My favorite thriller:

The Others
The Ring
Thir13een Ghosts

When I was younger I used to think that Village of the Damned was the scariest thing in existence.
I saw it again a little while ago and I'm not sure why it used to terrify me to death. But the kids are still freaky as hell.

I still to this day love that movie. lol

I loved Labrynth, and Dark Crystal is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Beetlejuice is a good one, I like alot of the New Age stuff; Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Wrong Turn, Cabin Fever, Thirteen Ghosts (It could have been better though.) and since I'm obsessed with Rob Zombie, House of 100 corpses. It's not scary but I just love the movie. Signs and Blair Witch were kind of sci-fi but by far they were creepy.

The ones I hated were Sixth Sense and The Ring, Sorry, but that movie totally sucked I mean what's scary about some chick coming from a t.v.? Like that's ever going to happen.

But then again what are the odds of the dead rising and walking the earth devouring human flesh (Dawn of the Dead). Very unlikely, but still a terrifying thought.

I'd say my top favourite horror film is Resident Evil. Seriously. I know most people think it sucked, and sure it wasn't scary, but it was still 'a good film' as far as I care. The acting wasn't half as bad as people said it was, the script wasn't half as bad as people said it was, it had alot more to do with the games then the Resi fanboys admit to, and the effects weren't half bad either. In all honesty it's a seriously horror/action good film. If you want a really disturbingly creepy horror film, go watch Silence Of The Lambs. If you want to see a horror film with amazing acting, an amazing script and generally good production values, then watch The Shining. But as far as I care, Resident Evil is the best for just slapping in ya DVD player, sitting back and having a nice cup of tea with. Thus, Resident Evil is my fav.

I like the Alien series and the Poltergeist series (especially the second). But the scariest movie for me was Very Bad Things, even though I don't know if that counts as 'horror'. That scene where the security guard bled to death got to me more than anything I've seen. It's not so much scary as horrifying, if that makes sense.

OOoooo I love scary movies...have since I was a kid. Thats prolly why my Mom's friends called me the "high preistest" when I was lil... **Evil look** hehe anyways ok...the only movie that scares the living SHITE outta me...is The Exorcist. I just think that movie is ugly and disturbing and it bugs me to no end, I can't watch it. "IT" scares me too, that whole clown thing...ugh! Pet Cemetary is pretty good...even though its sorta sad since I love aminals (animals ;) ) aaaannnddd of course Friday the 13th, Prom Night, and all the Halloweens are classics ;) One I thought sucked was "13 ghosts" or something like that...wasn't scary at all. And the only scary movie I about cried in from bein scared was the remake of Chainsaw Masacre...but that was basically because I was one of the stupid ppl that wasn't sure if it was real or not. Any movies where things like it could actually happen freak me out.

Love,

The remakes of House on Haunted Hill and Thirteen Ghosts ae some of the worst remakes I've seen. Sad because both had a great deal of potential, though the ghosts in Thirteen Ghosts were pretty bad ass. Both endings completely ruined everything, which made the ending to Gothika all the more predictable and disappointing (it was from the same prod. company).

Jason''s Ladder while more a psychological horror/ drama is a great movie IMO.

I am looking forward to The Village from M. Night Shyamalan. The trailer paints a very intriguing picture.

As I've stated elsewhere, I think the only movie thats gotten a rise out of me was maybe Event Horizon, mostly because I wast expecting a horror movie. :)

Oh I agree! I saw The Exorcist when I was really little(and the second one which was just dumb). I can't pick a fave though because I have seen way too many! I saw the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" in theatre and it made me jump a couple times lol. But it wasn't that scary. All the "Scream" movies are ok.. the "Halloween" movies are good too. Blair Witch was cheesy but thats what made it good from my point of view. I loved the ending to that movie. All the "Leprachaun" movies are kinda funny in a scary way. I didn't really like "The Ring" but maybe thats just because I was at a b-day party when I watched it so I didn't get the whole effect. Aww screw it... I can't pick:p I just love horror movies all around:) Love, Stacey

Btw, I don't mean this as a crack against you in any way. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

'Tis hard to find a good horror film these days. For me, probably a toss up between The Ring and The Exorcist.

Also, while it's not a horror film, per se, I thought there were some fantastic touches in Jacob's Ladder. As I've previously mentioned, the "nightmare hospital" sequence is the most frightening thing I've seen on film. Ever. Also, Adrian Lynne was intimately involved in creating the look of the demons and their tortured "whipping" motions. Since he usually sticks to sexual thrillers, I really must give Lynne his due for stretching himself out in this film.

Fav scary movie is Stephen Kings "IT".

Now, this isn't that bad if you watch it now, but for me it represents everything a scary movie should be. I saw "It" when I was 7, and to this day I can still vividly remember the entire plot. A movie whos images stays in your mind for 10 years is a GOOD movie.

Or maybe thats just post-traumatic stress disorder ;)

That and the scene in The Ring where she's crawling out of the TV. I'm 'blessed' with a very image based memory, and for some reason every time i need to go to the bathroom that image will flash in my head. Freaks me out really quickly :)

My favorite horror movie is Gothika. I liked it because usually in scary movies, they play that music that builds up to the scary part, so you know when to cover your eyes and stuff. In Gothika, there is no music. It's just plain silence, so you cover your eyes, but you don't hear anything, so you peek and then out of no where something jumps out or something. I got scared after seeing that movie.

Some of my favourite's are The Evil Dead trilogy (for comedy value), Alien, The Exorcist (although it makes me laugh now), Ring (Japanese version), Hellraiser, House Of 1000 Corpses and Poltergeist which I watched when I was far to young and believed every second of it to be real

The film which I consider to be the scariest is Event Horizon. I couldn't get the images out of my mind for ages. The acting is top quality, the effects are great .... and a rarity in the horror genre ... this film gives you something to think about.

The most disappointing horror film I've seen is The Last House On The Left. Mainly because it was banned in the UK up until a couple of years ago and and I had waited a long time to see it.... I just thought it was wrong ... I know the whole point of the film it to leave the viewer shocked.... but I at least want to be entertained at the same time.

As stupid as it sounds, House On Haunted Hill actually scared me a little, but I don't really like it all that much. My favorite scary movie... hmm... I'm gonna have to say it's a tie between A Clockwork Orange and Cradle Of Fear- a low budget film starring Cradle Of Filth. :D

I picked up a copy of Cradle of Fear a while back. Indeed, very low budget. Still, wasnt all that great, but not all that bad either. :)

Oh yeah, Event Horizon is definitely the scariest movie I've ever seen. In fact, there was one part where I actually cried I was so scared. Not like blubbering or anything like that, but a few tears leaked out.

I agree that movie REALLY creeped me out also...I really don't watch that much horror flicks since i'm kinda squeamish LOL :D But i DID watch Ginger Snaps last weekend....It was rather bloody but i really like the relationship between the two sisters and how Ginger's transformation changes all that .So yes i like it....I havent seen the sequel however...

The whole Scream Trilogy was classic. I love how the whole story was woven through out the movies and all the classic "rules" of horror movies that it followed.

I loved the Scream trilogy! The Ring and Signs were also really good. I loved the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre too. hmmm Halloween has always been a good one. It doesn't scare me anymore but the series is still fun to watch.

I LOVED the Child's Play series too. I used to think they were so awesome. Hell I still do haha.

Darkness Falls wasn't very scary to me...at all. The acting was pretty bad too. That's just my opinion though.

Agreed.

I'd like to see other Barker books on the screen.

I think Imagica or Weaveworld would be fantastic to watch now that the technology could duplicate his fantastic ideas and worlds.

I'de like to see, more of Stphen King made into horror
movies.
I have always admired his work, and I have actaully read a few of his books
surprisingly enough. ;)

My next movie I want to check out in theaters, is Mirrors.
I want to see how freaky it really is, compared to the previews
I watch on tv right now.

If you are talking just pure HORROR my favorite is The Ring (The American version)

If you are talking GORE I love all the SAW movies, I even love the ones that haven't come out yet LoL.

I love Stephen King too, Pet Sematary is one of my favorite movies, although it's horror I don't really see it that way, I see it as a kick back and relax kind of movie LoL I know I'm weird.

^^^I give alot of those movies number 1, in my top list as well.
Although, alot of the ones from long ago, I actually like the remade
ones alot better.

I can definitely say, I put Mirrors on my top list now!
As well as, Prom Night...that guys face is just plain creepy
IMO.

Prom Night? Really? Are you talking about the recent one or the original?

The remake sucked ass, seriously it would have been way better if it was R instead PG-13, I mean the one part where the boyfriend was laying in the bed and his throat had been slit and there was NO BLOOD....um you can't slit someone's throat and leave just a tiny scratch and no blood! That pissed me off, among other things.

:D

Does anyone like Stephen King's IT? OMG I LOVE That movie, I'm going to watch it tonight I love it so much, and the book rocks, but that's for another thread.

The Ring is my favorite I guess. The way the girl moves is what gets me.

Paranormal stuff is what freaks me out. Cause ya know I have a chance against a psycho with a knife, but if you can't see what's after you you're pretty much screwed.

The thing about The Ring was that it was universal. I mean in a way that it could happen to you too. Also the supernatural aspect of it. You're right Kalin, I'd rather face off against Michael Myers or Jason Vorhees than Samara (The girl in the Ring) any day of the week. LoL!
