Edit your profile. Pop-up notification of PMs is an option. Yours is probably turned off.

My fault, I have a pop-up zapper on that I forgot about entirely lol.

Oh, another suggestion based on experience at my other forum: the threads that you can "Watch For Responses," is there any way to get links to those threads into your profile or list of "subscribed" threads? Right now, it's not a huge issue, but if the volume of the boards increases much, it would be helpful.

The one useful hack I put on phpBB for Ze Paying Customerrrrrs is a reworked 'view posts since you last bothered to visit'. At present it ties across to the user session data but there's no easy way, once the session variables update, to go backwards in time. If you close your browser by mistake, your 'unread posts' reset to zero as your session restarts.

'View posts in last hour' / 'View posts in last 24 hours' - sexah!

I do it via a hack in search and a passed 'id=newposts&delay=xx' session var, just subtracted from the timestamp b4 the SQL.

As mentioned, when a session times out or a window is closed (accidentally on purpose) then the next time you login the new posts are those entered since the moment your session expires. Would it not be possible to maintain the list as it stood when there was last any activity in the window? In other words, if there were 10 unread messages when you login, read 5 of them and then get disconnected, even if you login immediately, those 5 unread messages are no longer flagged..... fixable?

Please please a better search engine. Definitely difficult to tell whether or not to post a new thread or not based on doing a search.

A search for "Guitar World" yielded nothing within the past few days, yet Lauren posted a thread with it in the title.

Damn and drat. I even read that thread, too - I think you posted it just after I joined but of course it wasn't relevant then. As it happens, that isn't quite what I was after, but by the sound of it what I would like isn't even possible - rather than it being based on the session for each post to be marked on a per-person basis so that "last read" really does mean just that.

But hey - it's the best board software I've seen so I can live with this - and of course there is that workaround!

Just read a locked thread where a person was directed elsewhere with the word "here" which linked to the appropriate place but this got missed by the person being so informed. Whenever I add URL tags I habitually use underline tags also so that the link stands out. However, could this not be the default when the parser interprets URL tags, thereby making links "visible"?

I know this has been talked about before, but after one stops being a newbie, can't he or she look forward to a better title than "Post Whore"?
It doesn't have to be customizable, of course. It would just be nice to have something to which to look forward. :)

Hey, is it possible to look for all posts by a member within a thread? The main reason I ask is for the pic thread, but with threads getting to 20 plus pages, it's sometimes hard to find the post you're looking for...

---A place where, THE original topics about questions that have been repeatedly talked about and asked about, can be moved into.

Basically informational topics that does not need further explanation/comments, and have been dead for awhile, but are still asked about. A place where new and old members can look quickly for answers, because we all know how much people DON'T use the search function. So all the original topics, about the BIG questions that have been asked so many times, could be moved into that topic.

Everyone keeps asking for sheet music and tabs. Why dont we have a musician forum where all of the [e]musicians work together to transcribe all of the ev music. Someone submits a transcription and then everyone discusses it until it is as accurate as we can make it. Once a song is finished, it can be put in a tab section on [exodus]evanescence. That would definitely add the icing to the cake that we are the best ev fan-site. We should put in the tab that it came from this site. If someone posts it on another site such as mxtabs.net, they will know it came from here and thus spread our name and prestige.

As an added bonus, if the band members were so inclined, they could tell us how accurate the tabs were, although they certainly dont have to since the have precious little time.

Tis true. I have seen it done. But I go to those sights regularly and other people do to and so we should be able to tell if they copied us, unless it is an amazing coincidence. We should at least be able to talk to the person and find out. Sites like mx actually have a rule that you cant copy from other sights. They have moderators for popular bands and we can talk to them if we feel someone stole a tab.

Ref the 'archived topics' section - the FAQ has been updated, and over the next month or so it will be expanded to cover a lot of the stuff noobs ask over and over again, so that should cover your request. Transferring some of the material (like the interviews) to static pages has already been done, but for promotional reasons as well as ease of access. A lot of the 'informational' threads claim to be accurate and guaranteed, but without specific research we can't rely on every scrap of info posted, unless it comes from the person themselves. (and with Priest, even then it's iffy :rolleyes: )

Ref tabs - there are hundreds of tab sites on the net that specialise in such things and though a database of tabs wouldn't be a bad thing, we would be competing against established and very well-ranked sites, so for the effort involved we wouldn't get much benefit. Ev tab sheets can be found easy enough, without the band's input there's little chance ours would be any more accurate as all you need is a musical ear or a PC with track analysis.

I have noticed that when you go into the 'Memberlist' that more than half of the "members" haven't even posted anything! EVER! Is there anyway that we can delete the names of the people who havn't posted? I'm not saying delete their username from the system, but take it off that list so there would be less clutter when someone tries to findd someones name. :? Doubt this will happen, but it's worth a try.

Just a little suggestion. Do you think you could increase the max length for private messages? They're like what, 1000 characters max? Especially since it's wiser to take an argument to pm's than do it on the forums you need more than 1000 characters ;). I won't lose any more pm's now that I know how short the max char. limit is but it would just be easier, heh. Kind of pointless I know, but this is the thread for creeping featurism. Ironic that a post dealing with extending pm lengths is so brief.

Hi ToB, I love the new site and awesome Advanced Search feature options, but would it be possible to add a "Modify Search" button and/or have it remember Advanced Search criteria? Last night I was updating the "Show Your Stuff to the Band" links and ran about 30 searches, all with the same criteria (minus one variable: username), and was sleepy, so I kept forgetting one field or another and having to go back (which resets everything), then I'd change the missing field and forget about another or something. I know that's not your problem, but if it's easy-ish to implement, that would be great! :)

The italics is fine, but in the pic I attached, you can see how hard the quoted text is to read, whereas the original is fine.

It's simply how your eye sees a color such as purple against a lighter background.
The text appears brighter, though it's actually the same as the original.

Therefore my request is: please enable me to add myself to my ignore list and end this missery :( .

Its frustrating when you go to check your posts etc and every thread up there is locked! Maybe im just bitching about something that doesnt really matter... but I still find it a nuissance!

Try the "Subscribed Threads" option in the Quick Links Menu.

I have to agree with that one... perhaps make it possible to search in different categories...ie: if you click on a person's nick it makes it impossible to search for their posts... idk about the rest.

I think there should be a forum for Items for Sale. This could be for people seeling miscellaneous things or things they have collected from the band. It could anything that they are selling personally or through ebay, that type of stuff.

Well if you're looking at gaining store points at the expense of rep points, try stealing. You're still at risk to lose store points yourself, but you can also gain as long as you don't care about rep.

Then of course you could alway make sure to rep other people, using the rep system encourages others to use it and increases the odds of you getting repped in return. And being repped is one of the ways to gain points.

As for skins, there are some mega-talented people here who could make a decent skin for this place. Just look at somewhere like digikitten.com for an exceptional forum design. You just need the right sort of person for the job, I guess. Oh, and said person needs a fair bit of time on their hands. But optional skins would be a fantastic addition to this place. Grey is frigging dull as hell, serious.

The "Ev" in Evboard does stand for Evanescence but if the theme was changed to something Ev-related, I think some people would be "turned off". There are people on the board who aren't big fans of the band and there are people here who don't even like the band. I think using different colors would be great but I'm fine with the way the board looks right now.

Nobody ever said "thou must change design immediately or we shall all leave at once!", this is a feature request topic... we are requesting features. One feature that would be nice, is an option for people to change from grey to blue, or whatever.

No. I like the band, and I like the grey. If I was greeted with a huge-ass pic of Amy upon pulling up the board, I would not consider it a good thing.

I mean, we have 23432747433249 members with Amy/Band in their avatars, usernames, sigs, etc. We know it's an Ev-heavy board. That would just be overkill. Black and grey are classy.

Well, luckily for you, my idea just includes alternate colour styles for members. It's not unheard of in the message board world to have more than one skin, and since this is one of the few boards that actually make money, I think it's more... what's the word... fitting for a profit-making board to have at least one extra skin. But hey, I might be completely wrong here. There are just some boards that offer lots of different skins, and it'd be cool if this board caught up with the craze, is all.

Your attitude just seems to imply that you have some god-given right to request changes to the board. Why don't you just accept what you have been given, and what you obviously aren't willing to pay for, and enjoy what ToB has provided? It does cost money to operate a board of this size as well as purchase options such as having different "skins" for different members and groups. If you would like to see more options than I do suggest that you donate to the board. This will provide ToB with the means to accomodate yours, and everyone elses's personal desires. If, however, you would like to visit this board, and accept it as it is, than feel free to visit without donating. :) :cool:

In one of your previous posts, you stated that a "profit-making board" should "offer more than one skin." ( you assume that this board is making profit)

This seems rather contradictory to what you just said. If, as you say, it doesn't cost any money to make other skins, and you would like to see variable skins, then I suggest you design a set of skins and offer them to ToB as an option. Since it doesn't cost any money you won't negate your previous statement, and you can get what you want.

There are boards out there that don't make profit, they still offer a wide variety of styles through skins.

This board does make profit, therefore I am led to believe that ToB takes the board seriously, and puts a lot of effort into the maintenance, etc. Therefore, for a board that takes the running of itself so seriously, it seems only fitting that it offers skins, that appear regularly on your average board.

And I don't see you saying to other people that they should code the board settings to THEIR requests. Why should I be any different?

Yes, you were right to request a feature, BUT the manner in which you did it came across quite confrontational, and a little bit rude. And don't give me this shit about "that's just the way I am"...If you want to coexist in a societal structure with other humans, you need to make certain concessions in order to sustain peace in said structure. If you can't do that, then by all means, find some other place that is more tolerant of your rude behavior. Until then, however, be prepared for confrontation and disrespect from your peers.

Also, about this board making PROFIT, that's a load of crap. I barely get enough to keep this place running. So don't give me any more of that profit crap.

Not to mention you would have to understand some code.

I assume you are talking about a colored style, and not a REAL Vb skin then. A real skin would make the forum look 100% different, where as a colored style would just change the overall colors of the forum, and maybe a few of the graphics.

Unless you are using all premade graphics, in which case if you knew what you were doing, then ... it might look ok. But with 3 hours of work, I highly doubt it.


That whole 40 hour thing I said comes from designing all the graphics, and then testing them out on your site. They probably won't look good at first so you will spend a long time testing out different graphics and colors.

Personally, I like the board and the colors as they are. I also like the fast loading time of the board. I think adding more "bells and whistles" and colors would greatly slow down the load / surfing time. That would be very frustrating, expecially for people like me who have dial up.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is no problem with suggesting something, but don't get mad when people don't go along with it.

But thats just my opinion. :)

I'd say don't worry too much about it. The problem wasn't the suggestion but the way he argued it, illustrating his inablity to accept no as an answer. Had you not made your suggestion he probably would have found another to get behind.

In the user profile for different people we can make an individual a "Buddy." This causes a + to show up by their name whenever they are online. Two suggestions:


Let us see people who add us as friends when they sign on invisibly (or at least give this as an option). This would allow people to log on anonymously for most people but still allow people who they choose to see that they are online.

Currently when an individual posts in a thread, that thread is marked with a black dot. How about giving the icon a little "+" sign in the upper-right-hand corner if a person we have marked as a "buddy" posts in that thread.

This is a pretty advanced modification, though, I think. But, yeah, this would be a neat little addition, I think. More buddy stuff is a good idea, perhaps go one step further with some sort of list of your buddies last three posts or something, in the CP.
