View Full Version : FINAL FANTASY VII: The Movie [MOVIE]

Has anyone else seen the article about this? I found it in a Japanese mag at Mitsua. I can't read it, but the pictures and some English text confirm the rumors. There will be a FFVII movie released next summer!

Cloud and Sephiroth look fucking awesome!

From what I've heard, it's a sequal to FFVII, not a remake. I'm super excited. Anyone heard this yet? Any links?

i haven't gotten a whole lot of sleep recently so excuse me if the following is a complete brainfart.

the final fantasy movie that was released a few years ago ... someone help me out ... was that based on a game or what? was there even a final fantasy movie released?? and is this new movie a sequel to the one that may have been released a few years ago that may or may not have been based on one of the games??

:?

It appears that the new movie coming out is based on Final Fantasy 7 the game, and nothing to do with the movie that was released a few years back.

Deus13
10-09-2003, 03:50 PM
Yes there was a movie. Aside from some terms, names, etc. it had nothing to do with the games. Course, the stories of the games are all independent of each other.

The new one is a sequel to Final Fantasy 7 which was released some time ago. Final Fantasy VII-2

so that other movie that was released a few years back ... what was that based on, if anything?

*lookin' forward to the next final fantasy movie*

Sorry if I worded that wrong somehow;

they are making a sequel to Final Fantasy VII, however, instead of a game, it's going to be in movie form.

and The Spirtits within was, as I said, an independent story in it's own. ;)

Unfortunately after that animation team did the Flight of the Osiris short for the Animatrix, square disbanded the department. :(

Did anyone happen to watch the outtakes in Spirits within? I love the one where doo man trips and he shoots the girl and kills here.... Its the best ! lol Talking about the movie made me think about it!

Shadowdust

Yeah, I liked all of the outtakes in TSW. Not to mention the little Thriller video that they added. :p

The graphics for the new movie look pretty decent. I wasn't sure how they were going to do the visuals for the characters, but they seem pretty decent. I was just looking over some old threads at an FF forum and there was one from July that was swearing that Square would never be crazy enough to come out with another movie for a Final Fantasy, especially not for a direct sequel. Seems those posters are eating their words now. :D

By the way, the movie will be directly to DVD and there's been no news of an English version being released. So far it's only set out for Japan to receive the sequel. Let's just hope they decide to translate it for North America and Europe.

Germ

I'm sure it will be released here... those Square folks are greedy people, they are. They'd be fools to keep it from the americans. And even if for some reason they do, it's guaranteed some fansub group would subtitle it for download or bootleg.

Primal

I heard somewhere that they’re also planning a prequel movie to FFVII because a lot of people couldn’t follow the story to the game (Involving Cloud, Sephiroth, Jenova, etc)

Germ
10-10-2003, 07:05 PM
Then I guess it kind of sucks to be the people who couldn't follow the story because so far there's been nothing official on an FF7 prequel. :)

Hmm... Even though I thought the game wasn't that great and generally left it with distaste, I admit this movie is going to be cool to see. Nobody does CG like Square.

i don't think anyone mentioned yet that the name is actually FFVII: Advent Children. it's supposed to be about an hour long. i have the trailer, if anyone's interested. just IM me. it's not very good quality, almost no sound, but it's the only one out there that i know of.

Haven't seen the trailer yet, I found a torrent but it didn't work so I gave up. I'm sure there's a US release planned, and if not, there'll be fansubs as soon as it comes out and someone has time to sub it. Also, there was a thread on this on another forum I go to, and it showed up on google and that thread has nearly 10000 hits, compared to the normal 50 or so.

Well they shut down the animation team because the Spirits Within did really bad in the theaters and they spent over 300 million on the movie and made only about 50 million, so they had to get rid of it. They brought it back for Flight of the Osiris for some reason, but the team died again after that.

same here, FF7 is indeed the best game ever (Luna's right here)...

as for spirits withing, people were expecting a movie with a lot of RPG elements, but as i said in the FF thread, that would have taken a whole lot more time (let's say for short like a 15 hrs dvd), more money, and people woudln't have seen it, cuz:

1.- it would have been to long
2.- if they did 3 parts (as someone mentioned), people wouldn't have been very happy about having to go three times and pay triple ammount to see it...

i agree with luna... but anyway... people who didn't understand FF7 missed up a great part of FF7, so if they liked it, they will like it 10 times more at least by understanding that....

cloud is not a clone, sephiroth isnt'....... won't say it, it would ruin a lot of people playing it right now...

well anyway, any question about FF7 story, you can as k here, i'll be delighted to let you in on it... i'm a ff freak, and know all bout FF7... so i'll be glad to help anyone

:? Yeah, you guys should check out some J-Rockers some time... the messed up bleached hair look seems to be the big thing in japan now, so I'm assuming it's more Tidus and Cloud look like Gackt than Tidus looks like Cloud or Cloud looks like Tidus. And on the subject, I swear Tetsuya Nomura is obsessed with Gackt. You can almost always find a picture of that guy looking exactly like either Cloud, Squall, or Tidus. It's crazy.

I'm almost afraid to see Tifa.

lol the story would be GREAT if they referred to the story...

oh and i don't think that's sephiroth for 2 reasons:

1.- short hair
2.- he died...

it might have been a clone, or maybe his son, but not sephiroth... i know they'll relate sephiroth to some big part of the story, maybe even bring him back to life (evanescence hee), but the guy cloud's fighting, i'm almost 100% sure is not sephiroth...

EITHER WAY, SEPHIROTH OWNS ANY OTHER VILLIAN... except maybe knives from trigun... ;)

You guys want pics? I got TONS, and in wonderful quality. :D Just tell me what you're interested in seeing, and maybe Sedric would host them for us.

I also have the E3 trailer, 50ish MBs, long download for dial-up. It's much more intense than the Cloud vs Kadaj (the sword duel) trailer, showing the 3 "mystery" guys, all in combat with cloud at some point, Vincent, Marlene, Tifa (who smokes Loz with 8,000 punches :D ), Wheelchair guy, and Sephiroth.

I've also put together some banners depicting about 2 seconds of a few gorgeous scenes. I can share these once pix8.net gets back up and running, or someone wants to host them.

lol, yeah. From what I've heard, I think it's releasing in Japan in 3rd quarter, about the same time as FFXII. I'm seriously thinking about investing in some Square-Enix stock

The E3 trailer has english background speech and some english texts, though no subtitles. I just hope they do a decent dubbing job on the transfer, and get fitting voice-actors (ie: no Lance).

Most painful... death... EVER. At least Auron was already dead and Tidus came back but augh Aeris. Poor, poor Aeris.

Oh, and according to ffonline.com, AC was supposed to be released on July 1st here and the first quarter in Japan. It hasn't been updated for a while though, so apparently they got pushed back :( I was really looking forward to it, too. FFVII was sort of my gateway into the FF world :D

Yeah, she said "save me" when she got captured and absorbed by a sorceress from the past, other than that, she just wanted a piece of Squall.

And like hell she couldn't take care of herself. She had a bad ass thing that strapped to her arm that shot boomerang blades. She also had Angelo, and he kicked ass all over the place. Her limit break was the shit because Angelo could make the entire team invincible for about 3 rounds.

The only bad thing in that game though was the weapon system and having to upgrade them rather than getting new ones.

Eh, FFVIII had such a badass plot that was completely ruined by the junctioning system. Combine the sphere grid with the plot of FFVIII and I think you would have the best game of all time (as far as rpg and FF goes :P)

I personally think Rinoa is awesome. She's just a facet of everyone's personality that a lot of people choose to ignore; how do you act when you get all hyper and bouncy and what not? That's what dshe's supposed to represent, which I think was a slap in the face to power gaming "I like muscle and swords" Fighter from 8 Bit Theatre type of people. She was refreshing from the power themes, like Aeris was, only they FREAKING KILLED OFF AERIS AUGH.

True, but I guess it's all in how you look at it.

FFVIII's theme was love (officially, i'm not just pulling that out of my ass). I think they did a kickass job making a love-based FF title that didn't get all cheesy-mushy every four seconds, and Squall's attitude towards everything was what made it just splendid.

I like Rinoa better than Tifa, just because she was a great story element. I don't think Tifa's ass-kicking abilities helped the story out much... :(

I liked FFVIII, except for Rinoa.

I'm glad they decided to include the Turks in FF:AC.

Especially Rude? XD

I dunno, there were just so many things that annoyed me about FFVIII.

I think it was mostly Squall's fucking whining every 5 minutes about responsibility. SHUT UP, YOU MORON.

And Rinoa was absolutely useless. Ooo. Random spells. Bah.

Dude, Tidus just looked fucking silly. I wouldn't call him hot, sexy or anything of the sort. Squall, while being whiny, was damned sexy, though.

However, it appears as though the reworking of Cloud for AC will smackdown the hotness of Squall, though they both posess big swords.

Mmmm. Big swordy goodness.

And why did they pass up Barett's Mr. T-esque do for cornrolls? That seems kinda messed up.

I think FF7 is one of the best of their game. Despite the graphics, its fun. Now if they make a movie based on the game, i have a feeling they'll change a lot of things around. I dunno, but i think they are going to mess this one up... just my thoughts....

There hasn't been much news on this so I thought I'd post this(can't wait!!!)

:) (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3136946)<--link
Though the official news post-dates the conventional wisdom by some time (in other words, we all saw this coming), Final Fantasy VII Advent Children will not see release within 2004. Square Enix's latest preview trailer promoting the Final Fantasy VII follow-up movie now features a nebulous 2005 release window, rather than the winter 2004 release date the publisher had stuck to until now.
When it was first shown off at the 2003 Tokyo Game Show, Advent Children was scheduled for release in the summer of 2004. However, it's gradually slipped down the calendar over the past several months -- Square Enix has shown a succession of previews at film festivals, but those have only featured perhaps one-third of the finished product.

Exactly when in 2005 the movie might see release remains an open question. However, Square Enix's commitment to publish Advent Children on Sony's UMD format (for playback using its upcoming PSP handheld) suggests that it might come sooner rather than later, to back up the PSP's spring release in North America and Europe.

Whatever the case, we'll watch out for more updates as they arrive.

Weird, I was thinking of a song to get from FF and here is the thread. lol. I need your help guys. (Since this is kinda related to FF, maybe I'll ask about the game's soundtrack)

Awhile ago, the FF commercial was on and a song was playing. A girl was singing it and it's kind of catchy. I don't know what the game number was. I only remember a catchy tune and girl singing. :( If anyone knows what I'm talking about or thinks what song it is, I really appreciate it. Gr! Sucks when you can't remember anything. :(

yeah, makes me mad, my game got scratched, but it sucks that you gotta go through all that fluff just to see what happens to tidus. Its a good idea, but the execution is not so great.

Just to straighten this little bit out:

Final Fantasy 7- Game.
Final Fantasy 7: Dirge of Cerberus- Game
Final Fantasy: Spirits Within- Movie
Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children- Movie
Final Fantasy 7: Before Crisis- Game

I know this thread is about th emovie- but i must express my sincere dislike for Final Fantasy 8, and how Final Fantasy went downhill from there.

Final Fantasy 8's story was totall half-assed. Every character, except Rinoa, had almost the exact same childhood, except for where they lived thereafter. When I say "All" from now on, I am reffering to the heroes, including Seifer, except Rinoa. All of the heroes started out at the same orphanage. Even the sub-pseudo-villain Edea. They all grew up there. They all left, and incidentally, all of them joined Military academies. And lets see...the teacher, Quistis, appears to have a thing with her student- Squall. Or shes just basically his very very very very close mentor.

Now, more into the game- the main character, Rinoa- randomly and suddenly falls into a coma. Which, thereafter, the main character, Squall- totally and out of nowhere bursts into a hysterical monologue-ing fit about his love for her. Up to that point, Squall APPEARED to have blown Rinoa off and was reluctant to do anything for her. Wow, what an odd revelation.

Squall, the main character- how cliche. THink of Cloud from FF7 with friends. A depressed boy, lone warrior, forgotten/supressed past. Lost relatives, a mysterious rival (who turns evil), and a stoic disposition.

The most interesting part of that game, though- were the time lapses between his counterpart, Laguna, and his story. Personally, I found Laguna's stories and his allies much more captivating than Squall and his groupie of military cadets.

A good game is where you feel for the characters and, ya know, are uh...effected by the game. In FF7- Aeris dies. Owch. That sucks. A lot. I totally felt for it. In this game-...um...im sorry, where is the moment that should have effected me? Even in the old school Final Fantasy 4- two playful little twins sacrifice themselves to save the party. Owch. That sucks. In Final Fantasy 6, I hated the bad guy. I just hated him. Period. Where in FF8 was this same strong storyline event(s) that is in every other final fantasy...?

The part I thought was similar to the others you mentioned is when Squall and Rinoa are finally just getting everything together, and then Rinoa is discovered to be a sorceress and taken to be sealed away. Then Squall has has big dramatic rescue moment.

There's always a romantic theme with the FF games.

VII - Cloud + Aeirth/Tifa
VIII - Squall + Rinoa
IX - Zidane + Garnet/Dagger (maybe Eiko ew x] )
X - Tidus + Yuna
X2 - Was just a crap game lolz~

I really hope the FFVII spin off games don't suck~ X2 was proof that they should never made a spin off.

I'm looking forward to the movie though, I've been following it since.. last year I think, could be longer then that ^_^;

That didnt do it for me simply because of just the awkwardness of the entire game's pseudo-romance story itself. Just didnt work for me...

Honestly I expected more from the story (it seemed a little too much like an 'add-on' rather than a new original storyline) but I still loved the movie :p

They clearly put a lot of work into the action scenes (Cloud vs Sephiroth was awesome)
I'm not sure I really like how they brought Sephiroth into it though. It seemed kind of like just an easy way of having him appear in the movie.
I loved Aeris' part in the story. It was a great way of bringing closure to everything.

I would have liked to see more scenes with the whole party though. Tifa kicks so much ass, I'm glad she was one of the prominent characters.
I was never really into the Turks that much, and I felt there was a lot of scenes with them, when (in my opinion) they aren't as important characters.

I shouldn't pick at though :p It's an amazing movie and definitely worth the wait.

Edit: I forgot to mention the music! :o
One of my favourite things about the movie. A lot of the songs from the original soundtrack have been remixed and they sound incredible :D I love the new version of One Winged Angel

Well, i bought it.

Its a bit overrated. Cloud is the main focus, and I was a bit tired of that. He was really obnoxious.

The action is awesome, the CG isn't as amazing- but I guess the action more than makes up for it.

Tifa's fight scene is the best, in my opinion. All the symbolism and references are very abstract, unless its as cheesy as I think it is.

Anyway, plot/story = weak, CG isnt as amazing as I expected-- at times, it looked real like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, but then sometimes it looked just like Final Fantasy X, the game. All the original characters make an appearance, with maybe only Tifa playing a significant role. The turks play an even more significant role than the rest of the cast.

Id say overrated- definately not worth the hype. But not that bad, either. Prepare for extreme anime-cheesyness, over-the-top special effects, but a fun ride during the fights. And...super sinister looking villains who can circle the rest of the cast in fighting ability, but yet, break down and cry. And youll probably get tired of hearing the word "mother". Just watch. Id really make a safe bet to say that this movie is really just a showcase for how well they can do action, and show the diverse characters of Final Fantasy 7 in FMV action.

Deus13
04-26-2006, 12:55 AM
Picked it up as well. I'm not to sure about whether or not it lives up to the hype, beyond the constant pushing back of the release date, I tried to generally ignore it.

As such, while yes, the overall plot was rather skimpy and stretched out over to long of a movie, the overall final product is a rather fun movie. I took it for not much more than that, and I wasn't dissapointed.

camdbz251
04-26-2006, 01:56 AM
The English version is out in Oz on May 3rd, but I do have the sub, and I love it. Cloud being the main focus I do not have a problem with, the story is as good as can be expected considering the constraints that S-E had to work with (bringing Sephiroth back and such) and the visuals are awesome - the fight scenes in particular shame all of Hollywood.

The story is well done - Geostigma is ingenious, I think. After all, at the end of the film, we knew that Jenova cells were in the Lifestream, and that the Lifestream had in fact helped Holy destroy Meteor by spreading over Gaia, so it makes sense that there would have been some Jenova-related side-effect. Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo are in fact physical manifestations of Sephroth's will and power - vessels, if you will, for this villian to reclaim his power. The fanservice was also well done,. Oh, and the First Tsurugi and Fenrir just rule.

BTW, I was just up at the Supanova convention and had a chat with the head of Weta Workshop, Richard Taylor. He hadn't heard of AC, so I wrote down the name for him, and he said he'd check it out. Might we soon see a Square-Enix/Weta collaboration? Mmmm...

Well, considering Square shut down their movie division after Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within...I don't think so.

Weta is already going to be doing the VFX for the Halo movie and so far as I last heard, whenever production actually gets underway, there are already preliminary art work done by them for the Evangelion movie...

I also asked Richard about Evangelion - he said it's slowed down, but he really looks forward to moving into it. Also, the Halo movie is apparently well underway - he discussed his enjoyment of moving into the future, as opposed to the medieval setting of LotR.

Woudl that just be Sephiroth, Cloud, Vincent, and Tifa? Because the other characters didnt really do anything.

I was so disappointed with the lack of involvement of the other characters. All they did was jump in and attack Bahamut, and thats it.

Lame.

Story was also pretentious.

The story is well done - Geostigma is ingenious, I think.
I also thought it would be a cool story because of this. But the story isnt about geostigma, a sickness, or a cure for this. Its about abstract references to Sephiroth and the Jenova experiments and Aerith. At the end, when the children are cured from the church water, I almost completely forgot that geostigma existed, because the movie was like a huge tangent. A fun one, but not a very good storytelling one.

I personally love the storyline of Advent Children, and the CGI is a lot better than the movies on FFX-2 (they were really lazy with that game), but all that's a matter of opinion I guess.

My point is that the voice actors they've got seem to be really good (I've not seen the whole of the english version yet mind you). Kadaj is annoying (though he sounded really cool and insane in the japanese one) but Sephiroth's voice :D - me and my friends had to invent a whole new concept just to describe it: 'vocal sex'

I have to wait until my birthday to get the DVD though...damn

Meh. It was aight.
I just watched the English version the other week.

I thought the CG was top-notch.... sort of. It's definitely the best animation I've ever seen, but when you take a look at future titles already well into development (MGS 4, Gears of War), eh... it's not QUITE so impressive.
Especially for all the nitpicking and date-pushing.

The fighting was intense. And insane. And required one HUGE suspension of belief. And took a few watching-throughs and slowing-downs to really catch all of the action. But there's no complaining, there.

Hmph.
Typical anime voice acting. Which is fine for anime, but hell. The characters looked far too lifelike to have those cartoony voices.
...And what happened to YELLING?! I don't care if Sephiroth is supposed to be all cool and collected and somehow-therefore-the-best-villain-ever, his voice acting was boring as hell. With buildings collapsing and orchestral-metal themes playing, Sephiroth is somehow heard without raising his voice.
What silliness.

The story... eh, yeah whatever. I found myself trying to find the point of it all.
There are no pre-movie conflicts that are resolved, and every conflict came from the movie itself. Aside from "omghumansdied" and other such fanatics, the movie answered no questions that it didn't itself ask, and asked no questions that were left unanswered.
We find out that Geostigma plagues humankind. They cure it.
We find out that Cloud has alot of guilt. He gets over it.
Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz are introduced. They die.
Sephiroth comes back to enslave the world. He dies.

Cloud lives.
Everyone else lives.
Everyone's better now.
And the world that we never knew was troubled... is fine again.

...Say what?
Uhm.... okay then.

SE needs to take a few notes from Kojima, I think.
SE seems to mother their characters into a world of boredom. What happened to the pain and suffering...? What happened to REAL loss and death and tragedy?

Bah.
Done.

Good movie,at least it had to do with the RPG games, unlike FF:Spirits within that had nothing to do with the video games. :D

Well all the games are seperate anyway...

But I think that TSW had the same themes and ideas as some of the games. Spirits, Energy, Gaia, etc.

Except, the Spirits Within had a story, plot, and deeper storyline and ideas that made you think.

So...intense CG action, less movie. Fair CG action, more movie.

I just got done watching it. Wow, I am very impressed. Ten times better than the spirits within. The plot was confusing, but then I havent really played a final fantasy game that did lol. The CGI and music and sound are by far the best I have ever seen in ANYTHING animated, whether it be video game or movie.

What probably surprised me the most is the depth of the movie. I may be overanalyzing here, but I love the mixing of Eastern and Western philosophies and religion, the combination of Eastern sacredness of nature, as well as the Western philosophies of benevelant deities, also the ideals of fate and free will.

Just like the game, it leaves you feeling like you have just witnessed something epic, and while you dont completely understand it all, you know its important.

My only complaint is that they may have made Cloud a little TOO powerful. Definately a must see for anyone you liked final fantasy 7.
