Ya, I they are more metal... also Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Theatre of Tragedy are other great gothic metal bands... but they're kinda not the same thing :P
Gothic Rock is more cool ahaha and it has a more "deep" sound; bass guitar is really important in gothic rock, much more than in metal!

Argh indeed Good Charlotte... Good Charlotte.... I've listened to them, but I have not even an album of them and I don't really know them!

They are very important :D
A kinda old band, they have a female singer.. listen to them if you like Evanescence and/or Lacuna Coil.
The most famous Inkubus Sukkubus song is Vampyre Erotica, listen to that.. and all the album "Supernature" is kinda good!

She means the band 'Disturbed' and yeah I guess you can call them 'rock', although their first CD was more nu-metal.

Good Charlotte is pop-punk.

Poisonblack made just one album, a really cool one however :D
http://www.poisonblack.com/
this is their official website.
It's a skilled band, it's a side project of Ville Laihiala, singer of Sentenced, but here he plays guitar.
The singer in the album is Charon's singer, one of my favs, he has a really deep, sensual voice but now after the european tour they're doing he'll leave the band.
On the website u can find the full song "Love Infernal" wich is really good, try it!

2 other great Goth Rock bands are

London After Midnight

Indeed about type o negative (wich are american)... I like their sound in general, specially Pete Steel's voice... and a song...
hum... listen to "Everything dies" that is one of my favs... or also "I don't wanna be me" whic is in truth a punk/hard-core song but is really good to listen to!

Ooh Lacuna Coil! I dig them very very much! I just got Comalies and wow! They totally rock! Awesome awesome band.

Wow so many goth bands have been mentioned, alot of them I like, but most I still need to check out. I'm new to the goth music scene, thanks to Eva, though some people might argue their "gothness" but whatever. They're dark, therefore they're goth rock. :D Anyway....that's a whole other post.

The Cruxshadows definately rock, I LOVE THE CURE! I have their greatest hits, plus I'm a HUGE 80s freak so yes, The Cure absolutely. :D

Was Bauhaus mentioned? I only know like three songs total of theirs, but I like them.

Honestly I don't know many Eva-like goth rock bands, so I am glad for this post cuz I was looking for some! I mostly know bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, The Cure....in all my gothic research (I didn't want to just jump into the subculture till I knew what I was doing :D) these are the bands most commonly mentioned......anyway I should just shut up, but this stuff just gets me excited. :D

Thanks for the list! It will keep me busy all weekend! :D

Oh, btw, Lacuna Coil songs to check out (for whoever asked) "Heaven's a Lie" (the song that hooked me, kind of like the BMTL of Lacuna Coil,) "Reverie," "Swamped," "Aeon," "To Myself I turned," and "Comalies," In fact, just buy the Comalies CD. :D

Oh, question.....How many of these bands do the "growling, gravelling," thing with their voice? I hate that. The whole death metal thing.....not my style. I like the more melodic goth rock, usually fronted by a female who sings (no screaming for me, lol) and usually sounds very earthereal and angelic. Anyway I was just wondering about all the bands' styles of singing.

H.I.M. - I LOVE!!!!! Ville Valo is hot, haha. Their music is awesome. Buried Alive By Love = amazing.

LACUNA COIL - I looove LC, I'm listening to them now ^_^ They rule! Falling or Heaven's A Lie or Cold Heratige would be my favourite songs.

TYPE O NEGATIVE - I've only heard two or three songs, but I like them ^_^ I like My Girlfriend's Girlfriend and I Don't Wanna Be Me.

MARYLIN MANSON - I love him! Ever read his book, The long hard road out of hell? It's great. He's a great singer no matter what people say.

RAMMSTEIN - YAY! I love Rammstein. I like Sonne and Du Hast and quite a lot of other songs I forget the names of ^_- Mutter is cool too... great album and song!

MALICE MIZER - I love them, but everyone I know seems to not really like them because they're j-rock... but I think they're great. I like Gackt too, even though my friend says he's too poppy for him ^_-

DIR EN GREY - Heard of them but never heard them yet..

And I haven't heard the rest :)

Hehehe oops. My bad. It's just I've heard some bands that claim to be goth and they do that whole growling thing. Maybe they're gothic death metal, which I guess there would be a difference between that and goth rock. lol. Thanks for settin' me straight ;)

Oh and I forgot to mention in my earlier post, that I've actually heard Unfinished Thought myself! I found them on MP3.com. I thought they totally rocked! I definately like them.

yeah Those kinda gothic bands where growl is used are indeed metal!
In Gothic Rock the vocal part is really important, 'cause guitars do mostly just rhythmic part (few and shorty solos also..). (Also keyboard is important, for all those beautiful orchestrations :D).
Indeed if you look to industrial rock (Marylin Manson, Rammstein) there voice is less important, in industrial rock the main feature is rhythm, given mainly by guitar and drums, vocal parts aren't very complicated.. and we always have orchestrations :D (also if in industrial rock they are more... hum... less gothic, more techno effects).
Growl is mostly used in songs where the main instrument are guitars and not voice.
mh.. however... try to hear some Cradle of Filth's song, they are a gothic black metal band... the singer uses both growl and screaming but he is a really good one (also live) and there is also a female singer who does back vocal... try to listen to "Her ghost in the fog" and to "Hurt and virtue".. just to listen to some good scream and growl singing.

I love all kinds of music... rock of all kinds is great.

Oh, question.....How many of these bands do the "growling, gravelling," thing with their voice? I hate that.

I actually am a huge metal fan, and I love the growly, gravely scremy voices, but no one can listen to that constantly. Well, I guess they could, I know people that do... I just like variety :0) -- And actually -- a great metal band to listen to is Opeth (www.opeth.com), because Mikael Akerfeldt has such an amazing voice. On "Blackwater Park" especially, on each song, he'll go from screamy, growly vocals to melodic, beautiful vocals that show off the awesome lyrics. The best song is "Harvest" which has no growly, gravely vocals in it -- very melodic, very beautiful. Check it out :0)

As far as gothic rock goes, I like...
Bauhaus (www.Bauhaus.org) -- 'Bela Lugosi's Dead', 'In the Flat Field', 'Gotham'
KMFDM (www.djmaharaja.com/kmfdm) -- 'Angst', 'Nihil', 'Attak' -- I don't know, some consider them gothic, some don't, but I like them so I put them here :0)
Ikon (http://www.ikondomain.com) -- 'In the Shadow of the Angel' and 'On the Edge Forever'
Claire Voyant (www.clairevoyant.com) -- 'Love is Blind'
Tapping the Vein (www.tappingthevein.com) -- 'The Damage', 'Butterfly'
Lacuna Coil (www.lacunacoil.it/eng/index.htm) -- 'Comalies' (Heaven's A Lie, Angel's Punishment, Swamped), 'In A Reverie' (My Wings, Veins of Glass, To Myself I Turned), 'Lacuna Coil' (This Is My Dream, No Need to Explain)
Razed in Black (www.razedinblack.net) -- (best album title ever) 'Oh My Goth! EP'
Lacrimas Profundere (www.lacrimas.com) -- I love this band -- they combine doom-metal with gothic rock and they also use flutes, violins, harps... it's great. 'Burning: A Wish', 'La Naissance d'un Rêve'
Morphine Angel -- 'Project Isa'
Faith and the Muse (www.themercyground.com) -- 'Vera Cause' (disc one is best!), 'Elyria'
Jack Frost (http://www.jackfrost.at/pages/index1.html) -- (maybe this is the best album title) 'Self Abusing Uglisex Unigod'
Sins of Thy Beloved (http://www.tsotb.com/) -- it's a Norwegian gothic/death-metal band with female vocals and violins... awesome. 'Perpetual Desolation', 'Lake of Sorrow'
Darkwell (darkwell-on-napalmrecords.com) -- they are on major independent gothic/doom metal label Napalm, the same label as Tristania, Lacrimas Profundere, and Sins of Thy Beloved -- 'Suspiria'

And Rob Zombie rocks, too by the way... check out Past, Present & Future -- awesome new cd with great songs like Drgula, Living Dead Girl, Superbeast, More Human Than Human, Feel So Numb... only reason I bring it up is because that's what I'm listening to. It was Queens of the Stone Age before that... gotta love it :0)

I gotta set this staight. Within Goth theres many sub genres. Same with metal. You guys seem to mix what they are by vocals only not music. So i'll let you in on how it work.

PS this is only many genres not cross bands like fear factory, pantera, children of bodoom and the gathering

Black Metal: This is really easy to get what its about, more satanic then death metal and generaly use more effects. Vocal wise more high pitched and less low grown. Started as a cross between thrash and gothic because of the keyboard under tow but later branched to more satanic themes and eary Silences, and generally more technical riffs compared to death metal.example Dimmu borgir, Cradle of Filth, and Emperor

Death Metal: Generally really fast, low growling vocals and good to listen to when going to beat the shit out of someone. Around the start of the mid 90 went down hill because of rock. Turned into this whole dick wagging im more hardcore then thoa shit and looking i can growl lower than you i won't be able to talk by the time in 30. But has started to get good again. example Cannibal Corpse,Crytopsy, and Messuggah (personal favourite).

Power metal: Sing along metal. Good to have when feeling down and has a good message not just kill everthing. Everyone needs one power metal cd. Happy fun good riffs and sing along choruses. example Helloween(good fun), Iron maiden, Stratovarius, W.A.S.P. and sonata arctica (jani is awesome).

Gothic metal: Alot like tradtional metal but use samples and piano alot more. Gotta love it. Crosses to a more rock side at points rather and always inovative and awesome. But gothic metal isn't a main stream thing because not really many bands play it generally like to go more simple in riffs and uses a piano for a verse then a guitar. Example but not sure becauses its more rocky Tristania, Poison Black, Lacuna Coil and Type 0 negative.

Hardcore metal: Look im a fuck. I hate this sounds like punk is a slack version of thrash. Crap vocals, crap riffs and crap lyrics. Totally shit but people can have their own opinion. Examples Stampin ground, dillenger escape plan and obituary.

Thrash metal: YEE hah! Fun. Aggression, Solos, Energy and Long hair. What metals about. example Slayer, Early Sepultura, and Really early metallica.

Cosses: Weird to deffine have no really genre but take elements from a main other style. Extremely orginal have strange ways of doing everything. Example Nightwish, Infalmes (dont know anymore), The gathering, my ruin, tapping the vein, static-x WHITE(ROB) zombie, mushroomhead, tool And pantera.

Tradional metal: Metallica, Ozzy, Black Label society and Moter head. You know this.

Nu metal: Easy to explane simple riffs, low tuning, standard singing and people jumping. Genius by the starters of the genre but not so much anymore. This is more fashionable than the other forms, good but to full of fake bands to be considerd as a lasting genre. Any band that is american without solos and says their metal basically is always placed in this genre. Example Korn(they started it), Limp bizkit(fags), And many other bands.

Gothic punk metal: Sounds punk says metal. They dresses more goth but take a less serious edge to every thing. Example The Misfits and murderdolls(who just rip off the misfits.)

Gothic rock: Sorta like gothic metal but dont clame to be. Easyer going and have less of an alienation theme. Alot like gothic metal and hard to tell the differents but you can tell. Example H.I.M, Manson, Evanescence(gotta love em) ,Modern Paridise lost.

Goth techno: Dont know what happend here not my field. Example mortis.

Stupid dick head metal: Crap everything, no timing. Weird sounding vocals that u cant under stand or really wimpy sounding. Cant mosh to it and not worth listing to. Every second you waste listening to this you could do something better with your life. Only really wierd people or the metaly disturbed may like this. Either really fast or really slow. Example the berzerker and Yakuzza.

that end todays lesson and dont bitch if you think im wrong, its my opinion.
(might be some spelling mistakes dont care enough to fix)

Nightwish
Within Temptation

Southern Death Cult (later known as The Cult)
Fields Of The Nephilim
Bauhaus

Lullacry is not Gothic Rock or Metal Below are the genres of metal music. Lullacry does not use what is in Gothic Metal. They have never once in any of there songs used bass-low vocals (or a death metal voice) I can find more about the genres of metal music if you want me to. I think it's best people do this. They should also find out what is says at the main site as well. And just because they show them at Gothmetal.net does not maket the a Goth band.

Genres

Speed Metal - As the name denotes, Speed Metal is incredibly fast, both with guitars, drumming, and bass. The vocals are usually on the high side, and the guitar is usually just a sped up and not too thrashy Classic Metal guitar. Song writing is very technical and structured, but unlike Progressive Metal, it has choruses and catchy hooks. Because of the skill level required to produce this style of metal, some of metal's best musicians have emerged from Speed Metal bands (i.e.: Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Jeff Waters, Tim Calvert, Gary Lenaire) Lyrical content varies and doesn't appear to be genre typical. This genre emerged at the tail end of the eighties, and quickly went away in the early nineties. Though short lived, this genre produced some of my favorite songs and groups, and continues to appear in diluted form in many bands.

Speed Metal Bands: Annihilator, Tourniquet, Cacophony, Forbidden

Glam Metal (Butt Rock) - I had a serious struggle deciding whether or not to even list this genre, as its "metalness" is very much in question. The debate rises from many rock bands being misnamed as "metal" from the time they began. There was an image that went along with the genre, and if a band dressed the part, then they were included in the genre, regardless of the music. Many rock bands cashed in on the big-hair, chick make-up image, without coming close to playing metal (Poison being the most well known offender). Granted, the true glam metal band's watered down version of metal wasn't anything to be terribly proud of, and their image still sends shudders through most metalheads. Lyrical content was at it's shallowest, mostly concerned about girls and cars. In my opinion, this was probably heavy metal's lowest point, because it attained public recognition and left the unknowing masses thinking that this was what metal was all about. The name really says it all, as it is the only genre that references the image rather than the sound, lyrical content, or point of origin.

Glam Metal Bands: Stryper, Whitesnake, Dokken

Death Metal - Death was the next step past thrash in levels of "hardness". It is most characterized by its very low, growly "cookie monster" vocals. The music ranges from very fast to very slow, but was almost always chaotic, often disregarding melody, choruses and other "catchy" elements of other genres. Regardless of guitar speed, the drumming is usually fast. Many bands of the era seemed to be in a contest to come up with the most revolting lyrics and album covers, concentrating on the imagery of people in various states of butchery. In fact, the name "Death Metal" is a reference to the vocals (of a dead man), and the primarily morbid lyrical content. This genre completely overwhelmed the metal scene from the early to mid nineties, but the oversaturation of death metal bands lead to its early demise (no pun intended). Though the music of this genre died off, versions of the death vocals live on in many modern metal bands. It should also be noted that there are still quite a few (good) pure death metal bands plying their trade, though the genres day in the sun is long gone.

Death Metal Bands: Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel

Industrial Metal - Industrial mixes sounds of industry, samples, and other computer-generated sounds or sound bytes with metal. It's pretty self-explanatory, as the music is just a mix of Heavy Metal and Industrial music, with the emphasis on metal. There is no definable genre typical lyrical content, except for maybe a "fear of machines" theme. Heheh. There are so few bands in this genre, that it's difficult to give a set time of origin or era of popularity.

Industrial Metal Bands: Brainchild, Fear Factory

Hardcore -

Hardcore Metal Bands: When two metal genres are mixed, what is created can become known as a "sub-genre". However, when metal mixes with non-metal music, it tends to create a whole new genre. Hardcore is such a mixture ... made up of 1 part metal and 2 parts punk. The vocals are either punk or death, the lyrical content usually deals with some topic of social unrest, and the music has the intensity of punk with the discipline of metal (i.e.: guitarists can play more than 3 chords). The scene is primarily underground, and appears to neither garner nor lose popularity with time.

Hardcore Bands: Sick of It All

Black Metal - Black Metal was yet another step taken in hardness, making the genre very appealing to those who search for such things, and very unappealing to a non-metal listener. Black metal is characterized by a total cacophonic wall of noise with the music often blending indiscernably into just loud, pounding noise. This is broken up with melody appearing behind this wall, or sometimes the noise just stops and reveals a simple melody. Keyboards are used to a great extent with some of the more "popular" black metal bands, and the vocals are generally a high-screeching death metal voice. (Sorry, that's the best rough description I can come up with) The imagery and lyrical content of the music is very dark, often delving into demonic and satanic issues. "Corpse paint" is often part of the image - which is basically white face paint with black designs. Though the genre appeared quite a while ago in the form of Mayhem, it's popularity peak was from the mid nineties to the turn of the millenia.

Black Metal Bands: Mayhem, Emperor, Satyricon

Gothenberg Metal - The name refers to Gothenburg Sweden, the hometown of the originators of this genre. The most common phrase for describing this genre is "melodic death metal". Vocals are usually death-like, but can drop into more dulcet "clean" tones. The music has the hardness of death metal, but the melody and rhythm of classic metal. This normally would classify it as a hybrid, but it's popularity and influence have garnered it the distinction of having its own category. This genre appeared in the mid-nineties amidst the fertile Swedish metal scene, and has continually grown in popularity. It is probably one of the most popular genres today, with In Flames sitting at the top of the pile.

Gothenberg Metal Bands: In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Ebony Tears, At the Gates

Power Metal - Very catchy music with rousing sing-a-long choruses. The lyrics are almost always about fantasy subjects, i.e: dragons, elves, etc. Keyboards are used a lot, the guitar isn't thrashy, and vocals are in the higher range. This is really the 90's resurrection of classic metal, with some influence from speed metal. Currently, this is a very popular genre (gaining popularity in the mid-nineties), but the scene is starting to get choked with too many bands.

Power Metal Bands: Blind Guardian, Nocturnal Rites, Stratovarius, Hammerfall

Gothic Metal - Gothic metal almost seems like a cross between Doom and Atmospheric, with extra instruments and a tendency to use bass-low vocals (or a death metal voice) interspersed with female soprano vocals to compliment the sound. It tends to be slow and have lots of extra atmosphere, sounds, and synths. In my experience, lyrics have been exceptionally poetic. There are not many gothic metal bands out there, as it is easy for the inexperienced group to drown in banality. However, there are a few bands out there that really stand out; namely Beseech. Theatre of Tragedy started off great, but has since been pooping out rave music. Side note: This genre is not to be confused with the very non-metal Goth scene and all its freaky wanna-be vampires.

Gothic Metal Bands: Theatre of Tragedy, Beseech

Rap Metal - Rap Metal, aka Rapcore, aka total crap, is metal with the lyrics rapped. Like glam, there are a number of bands that have cashed in on the image of rap metal without actually being a metal band. Limp Bizkit is a good example. There are some legitmate rap bands, but as I hate rap, I tend not to keep up. If I wanted to hear someone talk, I would turn on a frickin' radio talk show.

Rap Metal Bands: Korn

Atmospheric Metal - This genre almost defies being placed under the category of "metal" because of its calm nature, though guitars still tend to be distorted. Usually made by metal bands that have already proven themselves in another metal genre, this style is soothing, slow, and awash with sounds to make one comfortable. Except for Tiamat, most bands can't be described as "Atmospheric", except for a song here and there. Bands that have churned an "Atmospheric" tune or two are Opeth, Cathedral, and Theatre of Tragedy.

Atmospheric Metal Bands: Tiamat

Operatic Metal - The music is power metal, the lyrics are power metal, the catchiness is power metal, but the vocals are operatic in sound and training.

Operatic Metal Bands: Nightwish

Folk Metal - The name "Folk Metal" means that the group is playing metal influenced by the indigenous music of their culture or country. Not many bands are brave enough to allow local music history to have an influence on their songs, so these groups are pretty few and far between. (i.e. The Brittanic Skyclad mixing Irish folk music with metal.

Folk Metal Bands: Skyclad, Thyrfing

Here's the rest of the genres in Metal Music

Genres

Classic Heavy Metal - Classic heavy metal is the most difficult genre to define, primarily because there are 2 different definitons. The first definition is a not a reference to a particular sound; rather it is a tribute to the founding fathers of heavy metal. This is a confusing use of the term, because the founding fathers did not play the same styles of metal. (ie: Black Sabbath was a doom metal band, Judas Priest was riding the NWOBHM). The more modern and commonly used definition of classic heavy metal is a reference to the sound created by metal bands when metal was at its peak of commercial success in the early to mid 80's. Typically, this sound was fronted by high mid-range to super high vocals. The choruses were memorable and often anthemic. The guitars were center stage, full of hooks and wheedling all over the place, and sounding a notch heavier than 70's hard rock. Drums and bass were also slowly speeding up. Though fairly tame by today's metal standards, this was the hardest stuff at the time, and the inspiration for many of today's bands. This genre of metal produced the highest number of bands, so that it's sound is now so generic to sometimes be simply labeled "Heavy Metal" (no prefix), and considered the main branch of music from which most other genres split. This genre is also experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Lyrical content was often about guitars, heavy metal, violence, or Satan (though most were fairly clean).

Classic Heavy Metal Bands: Manowar, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, King Diamond

Doom Metal - Slow, low and heavy music that occasionally speeds up and takes higher tones. The guitar tends to plod between monster riffs. Keyboards are often used to creepy effect, and a flute is thrown in now and again. The vocals range from very low to medium-high vocals. Lyrical content often focuses on "spiritual" things.

Doom Metal Bands: Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Type O Negative

New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) - Much of this genre bleeds over into classic heavy metal. This style is so named because of the hordes of British metal acts appearing in the late 70's and early 80's. They shared a sound and country of origin, so voila!...NWOBHM. The sound is often described as a mixture of the old metal of the early 70's and the burgeoning punk sound of the late 70's. Most of the these bands died off just as quickly as they had appeared, but not before leaving a lasting impression on future metal superstars (most notably Metallica). The few bands of this genre that survived went on to hone their sound into Classic Heavy Metal. (see above)

NWOBHM bands: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Diamondhead

Progressive Metal - A lot of groups that defy description are lumped into this category. Most sound nothing like each other, but share a penchant for writing challenging music (i.e.: music without catchy choruses). The music is highly technical with a lot of strange timing and expirimental sounds. It also tends to be epic in nature (many changes throughout the song, leaving the listener wondering if it's the same song).I guess you could call it the thinking man's metal, because it takes a good amount of cerebral activity to decipher all the unexpected turns and time changes. The sound can be very mellow or very harsh, but the "jazz of heavy metal" is always unique.

Progressive Metal Bands: Voivod, Rush, Dream Theater, Saviour Machine

Thrash Metal - Heavy Metal tends to get progressively harder and outdo the advances of the previous genre. Thrash added distortion to the guitar, sped things up and took a less structured approach to songwriting. Drumming sped up and vocals tend to be mid-range and slightly gravelly. Lyrical content was very often about the political woes of the world. Thrash guitar has had an incredible impact on the world of music, and has influenced everything from crappy alternative music to most modern heavy metal bands. In fact, it may just be the most influential sound that metal has produced to date.

Thrash Metal Bands: Metallica, Testament, Xentrix, Exodus

It's really hard to describe what gothic music really is now because like many other types of music it's changed and spread into different categories and types. Here are some bands though that I think someone who enjoys that somber/dark/opera sound will probably enjoy:

Encryption (http://www.encryptionweb.tk/)
Dargaard (http://www.dargaard.com)
Epica (http://www.epica.nl)

My Goth Rock of choice:

Rozz Williams, Christian Death (Rozz Williams era more than Valor era), Eva O, Premature Ejaculation, Daucus Karota, and so on. Essentially, anything and everything Rozz Williams.

For Goth influence, definitely have to go with Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, and The Cure.
