Fallen, track 5
Anywhere But Home, track 1
written by: A. Lee, B. Moody, and D. Hodges

Developed during the 2001-2002 demo sessions and later released as track #5 on Fallen.

Ben Moody’s Story about Haunted is a post on Evboard (http://www.evboard.com/showthread.php?p=43068) and reads (slightly edited):
A little girl around 8 or 9 in a little white Easter dress is walking down a neighborhood street bouncing a little red ball. As she approaches an obviously deserted large house with a sinister demeanor, her attention moves from the ball to the house. Not paying attention to her bouncing, the ball hits the curb and ricochets toward the house. As she chases the little red ball toward the house, the ball picks up unnatural momentum and bounces right into the huge gaping front door. The little girl pauses for a moment, looks up at the house, which now appears to be staring down at her, and cautiously enters the house in search of her little red ball. as she slowly walks into the atrium, she surveys the decaying mess that once was obviously a beautiful mansion. She becomes mesmerized by the exquisite detail of every inch of the banister winding up the seemingly endless staircase in front of her. Suddenly her thoughts are broken by a horrifying commotion. She whips around to run out the front door, but finds only a blank wall where the door once stood. Frightened, she runs down the first hallway she sees, trying desperately to find a way out, but with every turn the world behind her changes, bending to the will of the house, so that even finding a path back to the atrium where she began becomes impossible. Terrified, the little girl sinks into a corner, puts her head in her hands, and weeps.

10 years later....

The little girl wakes up in a panic, now a young woman. Dirty, scarred. She's now clothed in black pants, work boots, and a black wife beater. Her skin is pale and dirty. Sun has not graced her flesh in over a decade. She wakes to find a meal placed on a dirty silver tray before her, just enough to sustain life, just like every morning before. Placed there by a figure she can only see in passing, around a corner, walking through a door.... a figure that has become her only friend, and her only hate. Her entire existence has become nothing but to hunt and destroy this shadow that keeps her here. As she hunts him relentlessly day after day, she becomes lost in the dichotomy of her being. This thing that keeps her here, this person that repeatedly rapes her mind and watches her when she sleeps, has become her only friend. For is this person left, she would cease to exist. For she live only to kill him. But lives only FOR him. Every day the house changes around her, so that every day she wakes in a foreign land. The only constant... is him. She hears his heart beating, she smells him, she can only think of finding him, but he is also the only thing she knows of love.

Haunted - Fallen and 2002 Demos Version

Long lost words whisper slowly to me
Still can't find what keeps me here
When all this time I've been so hollow inside

I know you're still there

Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you, loving you
I won't let you pull me down

Hunting you I can smell you - alive
Your heart pounding in my head

Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Saving me, raping me
Watching me

Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you, loving you
I won't let you pull me down

Haunted - 2001 Demo Version (original)

Long lost words whisper slowly to me
still can't find what keeps me here
when all this time I've been so hollow inside
I know you're still there

Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
fearing you, loving you
I know I’ll find you somehow

Hunting you I can smell you - alive
your heart pounding in my head

Calling me, killing me
I won’t let you pull me down
saving me, raping me
watching me

Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
fearing you, loving you
I won't let you pull me down

Wow, that's really cool to listen to Haunted after ready the story behind it. I never caught this thread before now, and I'm glad I did, because this was pretty neat to invision bens story as the song progessed.

every time I hear the song (after reading the story) I imagine the little girl with her red ball entering the house and years later haunted by someone or something.... it's awesome :p

I remember when I first heard this song. I was just getting into Evanescence after discovering that they did not, in fact, disband , so I was listening to it at 1 AM in the dark. Not knowing any better, it scared the crap out of me. It's one of the creepy songs, right up there with Even In Death, but now I love it to pieces.

...Finis.

I love this song. Its a little creepy though, espicially the ending where the choir is singing and Amy is too. And I just learned it on guitar! woot!!

I love how eerie this song is and the guitar part amazes me. I first listened to this in broad daylight and it scared the crap out of me! But after I got over that I really loved it and couldn't stop playing it. I can just picture that story fitting right into the lyrics. It's a perfect image.

Does anybody know what the instrument that makes the sound throughout the song?

Do you mean the one in the intro? I thought that was Ben's guitar on some weird setting. Since he plays those notes on it live (when they use that intro, for example the AOL Sessions) instead of them having a recording or something.

Ya i'm talking about the intro. I don't know it doesn't really sound like a guitar. To me it kind of sounds like an organ not a church organ but an organ with a sound I've never heard. For all I know it could be a guitar. Or maybe a synthesizer. (I think that's how it's spelled)

I was wonderign the same thing a few nights ago when I was listening to it in the complete silence and dark when I couldn't sleep... but yes, it's a synthesizer, well the bell sound in the background is. The rest is just sound effects and piano and other things on a cool setting, but I can see where you're getting it about the guitar.

Where I take my piano lessons there's this awesome guitar teacher there and he has this guitar with something like a sound board that you hook up to it and you can play the guitar with all these different instrument sounds. It's pretty cool. There's a synthesizer setting on there too. Actually I think quite a few synthesizer settings. lol.

I always wished this would have been a single. I loved the fear. The lyrics were creepy and fit in with the mood I was in at home. It sounded evil and that's what I liked about it.

I think Haunted is alittle Synth-Rocky if you know what I mean I love the Synthersizers at the begining of Haunted and the beep bits adds to it. the Gutiars are soo good to and makes it even better. :)

Oooo! 1:20 - 1:21 you can hear a wammy bar effect and again at 1:24 - 1:25! Lol.

I thought of a video for this song. Well other than the one that I thought of like 3 years ago that went along with the concept of Ben's story... lol.

If you want to read it go ahead. But for the most part, it's very detailed.

The video opens up, in someone’s perspective, to a dreary day/night, when it’s getting dusk. There are black clouds, a gray sky, and it’s windy. There is a somewhat bluish tint on everything. We see a wooded area, a wrought iron gate and matching fence. The fence and gate have vines on it, like it hasn’t been taken care of for a while. We see the top part of an above ground crypt over part of the fence, and part of the gate.

0:00 - 0:12 [All is silent. Then the song starts. We hear wind, the scraping of fallen leaves on cement being pushed by the wind, and we hear the rustle of leaves on a tree. We see a pale dead-ish looking hand. The hand has long pointed, black nails. Then we see a pale dead-ish looking arm with some white material on it, caressing the arm as the wind pushes it. This thing with this gruesome looking hand puts it, the hand, on the wrought iron gate and pushes on it. The hand falls and the gate opens by itself.]

Long lost words whisper slowly to me [We see Amy sitting Indian Style on the ground with her eyes closed singing this line. At "...me..." she opens her eyes and we see that they are a deep dark blue color.]
Still can’t find what keeps me here [At this line Amy is looking around, more with her eyes but slightly with her head. At "Still can’t find..." her head is to the right, she is slightly moving it as she sings, but with wondering eyes. At "...find..." her head is still to the right but her eyes are forward. At "...What..." her head is forward, with her eyes. At "...Keeps me..." her head is moving to the left now and she still has wondering eyes. At "...Here..." she closes her eyes and moves her left ear to her left shoulder and moves her head forward and then straight again.] (Aaahhh) [As this is being sung, we hear it with a bodiless tone as if something is letting her know it’s there. Amy opens her eyes and looks forward, intimidatingly.]
When all this time I’ve been so hollow inside [At this line she is getting to her feet, slowly. At "...Time..." is seems like she was pushed down by some force because she goes forward and down a little bit with her upper body. She is coming back up, slowly, as she sings "...I’ve been..." At "...Inside..." she is fully up and we see she is in a dark sea bluish greenish corset, with the point at the bottom, and a long, to the ground, poofy skirt to match it.]
I know you’re still there [At this line, she is moving back and to the left and looking at the wooded area as we watch Amy’s side, and the camera is switching views. At "...Still there..." we see Amy at full front and we see a few trees in the way and the thing with the pale dead like had and arm with it’s hand resting on a trunk of a tree. We see that this thing looks a lot like Amy, only it’s hair is half up with braids in the half-up part. It is wearing the same thing as Amy, and has the same eyes, only darker.]

Watching me wanting me [We still see Amy from the wood and she is now walking toward the it. The thing moves. We see everything from Amy’s point of view for a split second and then we see at "...Wanting me..." Amy is now in black jeans, black chucks, and a black jacket.]
I can feel you pull me down [Amy is in the woods and she touches a tree as she moves to the right as she sings this line with emotion with the thing that looks like her still in sight as it dashes behind trees to lose Amy’s terrible gaze.]
Fearing you loving you [Amy still has the thing in her sight as she is singing this line and moving forward towards the thing.]
I won’t let you pull me down [At this line Amy is right on top of the thing (she is in front of the tree it’s behind) and Amy dashes around the tree and the thing is gone. It moved at the speed of light. Amy looks stunned and tries to look for the thing.]

1:18 - 1:23 [Amy moves slightly forward as everything flashes as if lightning is striking.]

(Haaa) [At this, she hears it and snaps around. She looks for the thing, but it isn’t in sight. She’s using all her senses to try and find this thing.] Hunting you I can smell you - Alive [She is running, looking for it with all her senses and can’t find it.] (Aaahhhh) [At this, her senses finally come in her favor and she heard it. She stops and snaps her head in the direction it’s in and starts walking then goes to a slow paced run. Then she slows down because she’s close. She can sense it.]
Your heart pounding in my head (Aaah) [As she sings this line everything flashes still and she is in a part of the woods where the trees are close together and she can put each hand on two different trees. We can also hear a heart beat beat made with a bass drum. She puts her hands on two different trees and pushes on them. At "...Heart..." she pushes off the tree with her right hand. At "...Pounding..." she is moving froward again and her left hand is taken off of one of the other trees and her arm is still outstretched as if she was distracted by something. "...In my..." Amy looks to the right and sees there are tons of figures, in a distance. She looks closely and puts her hand/fist to her head on "...head..." then she looks to her left. When the (Aaah) is being sung as Amy sings "Your heart..." during the flashes we see Amy and the thing both singing at the same time. Then Amy sees the thing again.]

Watching me wanting me [She starts walking again as she’s singing this entire chorus.]
I can feel you pull me down
Saving me raping me
Watching me

2:16-2:39 [During the this break and as the choir sings their "Aahh ah" Amy notices that the figures in the distance start to sing this "Aahh ah." She looks at the thing that looks like her in surprise. The thing smiles and runs, not at the speed of light this time. Amy runs after it.]

Ahhh Aahhh (Watching me wanting me) [At this part, when the choir starts to sing and then Amy, she loses sight of the thing because she closed her eyes.]
(I can feel) Feel you pull me down (you pull me down) [At this she seems a little confused because they’re out of the woods and Amy see’s the thing running up to the crypt. But she soon figures out where she is and comes in on her "Feel you pull me down!" And the thing disappears into the crypt.]
(Fearing) Ahhh Aahh (you loving you) [At this Amy is back in the woods but not deep into them.]
I won’t let you pull me down [She walks and eventually disappears from the cameras view.]

3:03 - 3:06 [We see the crypt again in the same dreary dusk, with the same dark clouds, and we hear the wind. The camera pans fast and we see Amy near the wrought iron gate. She pushes it open at the deep noise, and the camera fades to black.]

I don't really like the way I ended it, but my inspiration was running away... :'(

Can someone tell me what kind of effect the guitar is using in the solo? I'm pretty sure it's a wah-wah pedal, but I'm a piano nerd and don't really know these things. It's for a music assignment so I need to be correct. :)
Thanks

^^^ And yes, I meant LIVE version. :)

This has always been a personal favorate song of mine, and one that
I have always thought fits Evanescence and who and what they stand for.
I just leaned how to play it on guitar!
It took me a little while, but it turned out great! :p
