Can Mario go 60 games? The Pens need to make money or it's bye bye Penguins.
I'm very skeptical as I am every year about the Rangers. Overpaid and Overrated. I have no idea why the ESPN analysts expect them to go anywhere this season, but let's hope for the best *crosses fingers*

Seems as if the Rangers have the expectations to do something EVERY year, and never do anything. What has it been, 5-6 straight years out of the playoffs?
The Canucks can do as well as they want for the first 3/4 of the season like they did last year, then they kinda stumbled down the stretch, allowed the Avs to win the division AGAIN, not to mention losing the Rocket Richard and Art Ross trophies to Colorado players. Then the debacle known as the playoffs... let's just say I'm happy we've got Hedberg here to take over in case Cloutier starts to suck again.

straka and morozov are still major parts of their offense, but with kovalev, hrdina and barnes gone it's definitely not going to be a pretty season. unfortunately super mario can't do it all on his own... :(
i'm reluctant to say that i think that boo jersey :bad-words: will take the east again this year (shed a tear for my beloved capitals), but brodeur is just too damn good. not to mention he's got scott stevens in front of him to take the heads off of half the guys on the ice.
the west is a toss up between the avs, ducks (well federov, prospal, elias and giguere), and detroit. i'm leaning more toward the avs only because kariya and selanne are the best linemates in the history of the game, it wouldn't surprise me if the avs play a line of kariya and selanne centered by either forsberg or sakic. the only negative that the avs need a franchise level netminder in the worst way since roy retired.

The Avs have potentially the best offense we've ever seen.
I think the decision on Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya is to stick on the on Sakic's line and leave the Tanguay-Forsberg-Hejduk line intact. Of course, this mean that most teams first line can't handle the Avs second, and just forget about the Kariya-Sakic-Selanne line.
They're very weak on defense. Aebescher's good but he's largely untested and doesn't have much post-season experience. The backup is a complete newbie. Blake and Foote are strong, but I'm not sure that will be enough as the season rolls on.

all true, but aebescher has had some decent numbers and he was under the tutelage of arguably the best goalie ever for the better part of three seasons. he's not going to break the GAA record, that's for sure, but i'm guessing he'll be a decent goalie. maybe he'll have a slow start for the season, but his shortcomings will be far outweighed by the offensive fireworks displayed selanne and kariya.
foote and blake will also have nikolishin to work with, niko is one of the most under-rated defensive forwards in the league and he should be centering their checking line. he's not a big guy, but he sure knows how to get under the skin of whoever he's covering.

Hockey!!! Finally. Relief from football.
So yeah. This year, I'm determined to make it to an Av's game. I'm pretty ticked I never got to see Roy play. Especially since I live less than an hour from the Pepsi Center...gah
But I plan to make up for that this year.

I'm so jealous of you Avs fans. Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya are my two favorite players ever since they played together in Anaheim. Oh well... I'm just happy to see them play together again. I think they have a very good chance of winning the cup this year, but it all depends on how well Aebescher plays. He's a good goalie, but he's no Patric Roy.

hockey is my second life, with music being first....
as far as who's goign to win this year, my darkhorse LA KINGS with new goalie Roman Cechmanek and a healthy Jason Allison and Adam Deadmarsh will pwn the West...though the Avs are scary. Detroit can bite me and the Mighty Sucks will go back to being the joke of the NHL (did anyone take them seriously in the first place?)
East....as long as Lou Lamareillo keeps the freaking pentagon on defense in front of Brodeur, he will continue to put up great numbers. He is no Patrick Roy though, who carried two pretty good teams to the Cup (Brodeur has won all 3 of his with excellent teams) and also carried two mediocre teams to the Cup, something that Brodeur and Hasek have NEVER done. anyways, just ranting cus i miss watching St. Patrick already. in the east, Ottawa pwns. the Senators are the preseason pick to win the Cup by many columnists and they've got a damn good team. plus, it'd be nice to see a Canadian team in the finals again.
2004 Stanley Cup Finals: Los Angeles 4, Ottawa 3. Conn Smythe Trophy: Zigmund Palffy

I saw this thread linked from the NFL thread, and since football season's just ended, I figure this deserves a nice bump.
As we're almost at the allstar break, and over halfway through the season, any thoughts/surprises/disappointments so far?
I'm not surprised teams like the Avs and Wings are up there in the standings, but I didn't expect the Sharks to bounce back as well as they have, and I definitely didn't expect the Leafs to be on top of the East. It's gonna be interesting to see what happens down the stretch... leading into the best two months in sports.

How about how well LA has fared staying above 500 without Palffy, Allsion, Deadmarsh and Straka most of this season. It's going to be a tough grind but if they make the playoffs with the amount on injuries they've siffered it would be quite remarkable. I'd say it's safe to say they'd be one of the West's best with a healthy lineup. Wish in one hand and crap in the other they say, tis the frustration of being a Kings fan.

Im gettin really excited about my Sharks gettin in the playoffs this season. Were 3rd overall in the Western conference, so Unless we totally fuck up we should be in there for sure.
It's gonna be a fight between Dallas and us to win the pacific division. There only 3 points behind us.
So to any Dallas fans here: Bring It On!!!

Don't forget that LA owned the Pacific division before all the injuries started happenning. It's far from a done deal yet. Phoenix has been hot at times as well. The onyl team int he Pacific that's done is the Ducks (proving last year was a lucky fluke - I LOVE seeing the Ducks lose!), beyond that it could still be almost anyone's division, and possibly the toughest division in the NHL.

I agree with you totally with the Kings. If they're ever completely healthy, they'd be quite the force, and probably be competing amongst the top teams in the West. Sadly, it's been a long time since everyone's been healthy with that team... guys like Allison and Deadmarsh haven't played all season, after being injured big chunks of last year too... Palffy and Straka seem to be notorious for injuries.
To be honest, I didn't realize (since I don't follow the league as closely as I once did) that the Kings are competing as well as they are, only two back of Dallas and five back of the Sharks for the division lead. Anything can happen there.

Yeah, they're still in the hunt certainly. Ziggy Palffy would've gotten my vote for league MVP before his injury, but he's out for the season now. Straka *may* return. Allison probably won't play this season and Deadmarsh will probably never play again because of post concussion syndrome. I'ts sad and frustrating that a team with such potential is constantly battling injuries. Thank God we got rid of Felix Potvin or we might be in last place behind the Ducks right now, Cechmanek and Huet have been solid all things considered.

I agree on the Bertuzzi incident. It was completely premeditated and absolutely blatant intent to inure the Avs' Moore. Bertuzzi is far too talented to go unsigned after any disciplinary measure, but at the very least, he shouldn't play until Moore comes back healthy. I heard that the Vancouver police are investigating this as well. Ironic thing is that the McSorley/Brashear incident also happened at GM Place in Vancouver.

That's a good idea. I've never heard of that before, but a lot of people are saying he should be suspended for the rest of the year.
Let's face it, Moore's fractured neck may take more than a few months to heal. I'd say suspend Bertuzzi for the rest of the year. It's bad enough that Bertuzzi's facing a police investigation from all of this. His career won't be the same after this either.
Colin

I'm happy that this got brought back... I was going to at the time it happened, but didn't because I didn't expect a lot of people to have followed it. However, it's a bigger story than I expected it to be... and it's not just a Vancouver story now.
Forgetting the Bertuzzi incident for a minute... what puzzles me about this game is why the fights started so early (when it was still 0-0 before the Avs blew it open in the third) when nothing happened down in Denver when they played last week. It's like the Canucks seemed to want to put on a fight show for the home fans instead of actually showing up to play a game of hockey. I don't know how else to explain how poorly they played early. Even when Brad May scored his two goals to make it 5-2, he taunted David Aebischer after both... taking a penalty on the latter and killing any possible momentum the Canucks could have gained. Finally (about 3 seconds after I'd said "at least we haven't seen anything too cheap") the Bertuzzi thing happens. You could TELL that they were intentionally gonna try to drill Moore somehow, and if you need any proof, look at Marc Crawford's face at the time. He had this evil lil smirk, that frankly makes me sick.
Of course, I'm sure no one involved wanted the thing to be as bad as it did, even though i'm still convinced it looked like he not only smoked Moore from around the back but also plowed his face into the ice. At the time watching it... I was honestly scared for the guy's life. And that shouldn't happen in an NHL game.
The thing that still gets me more is not just the brutal nature of what happened but the fact it HAD to have been a "let's try to nail Moore" thing brought on by Crawford. Yes, Moore should have just turned around and fought Bertuzzi when he was trying to get him to dance, instead of skating away, but Todd should know that if he's not gonna fight with him, don't force the situation. I too wonder why Tony Granato would even put Moore out there in such a situation.
------
So, what happens now? I don't know. I think Bertuzzi should be suspended for as many games as the Canucks play into the spring. If nothing else, just to send a message to players that this stuff isn't tolerated. The suspensions they usually give out are utter BS.
I'm not big on criminal charges getting into pro sports events, especially things that are seemingly game situations... but at the same time... what happens if Steve Moore had have died? You can't just say "well, it was a hockey incident" when there was clear intent to go after and hurt him. And why is it that these incidents are always in Vancouver as well? Strange.
Bertuzzi is gonna be upset about this, and probably will be for a long long time... probably the rest of his life. I do hope Steve Moore makes a full recovery and is somehow able to play again, but I still think it's going to haunt Bertuzzi and change how he'll play the game. He's a very competitive guy, and I don't think he can be effective without being so.
It almost reminds me of a somewhat similar yet totally different situation, the Dany Heatley car accident that killed Dan Snyder. Both Bertuzzi and Heatley are very promising young players that made horrible mistakes in judgment (one on, one off the ice), and both will have to live with the guilt of it for a long long time. It's a bit extreme of a comparison... but it's just something that came to my head.
It's gonna be very interesting to see how everything unfolds with this team. I'll do my best to keep everyone posted.

I havn't seen the incident yet since Hockey is only on here on sundays and Wednesdays so i should see it in about an hour lol. Now we're nearing teh play offs who do you see in the final? My two teams Dallas and Nashville are looking good to make the playoffs but i don't think either will make the final. I did think Colorado but they gotta start playing again. The game against Calgary they were appalling. I think Detroit vs Philadelphia althgough Tampa Bay could get there if their form continues. I think Philly will win it but if they don't get there then Detroit
Colin
03-10-2004, 07:38 PM
I *really* like Tampa in the East right now... I know they didn't quite make as many big moves as other teams in the East like Toronto, Philly, Ottawa, and Boston... and they don't have the playoff experience of some other teams (throw in Jersey who is ALWAYS tough in the playoffs)... but I think with Khabibulin in net and a lot of the stars they've got, they will definitely be noticed.
East is gonna be fun to watch though.
West is too much of a crap-shoot. I'd want to say Detroit initially, but I don't know if their goaltending is gonna do it. Same with Colorado and the Canucks, not to mention the effect of the Bertuzzi incident. I think anyone can sneak up and make a mark in the Western playoffs. You could well have a team like Calgary or Nashville sneak up and go quite a ways in.

I think Todd Bertuzzi should be forced to retire. If he did this once...he'll do it again. First of all...he's a chicken-shit punk if he can't at least fight someone face to face like a respectful hockey player. To hit someone from behind is shit, but to hit him in the temple (which could have killed Steve Moore) and then throw him down INTO THE ICE and still continue to punch him. I personally think, if he doesn't get a harsher punishment, then he should AT LEAST be forced to retire. Moore has lacerations in his face from this! Bertuzzi is a son-of-a-bitch who should not be allowed to play hockey.

You know, this isn't the first time any hockey player has hit another hockey player, and although I agree he crossed the line 100% and that he should be suspended for the rest of the year, I have to say that just because Moore wasn't so luck as to get up and skate off the ice, doesn't mean this is the first or the last time for violence to occur.
Hockey is violent. Burtuzzi took it too far. If he wanted to be fair (and cover his ass) he should have come up from the front rather then behind. If that was the case, Moore would have been able to defend himself more, and no one would be blamed.
Burtuzzi messed up, but he is no punk, and Moore is no saint. I saw the game, and I was pretty upset by it. But I see a lot of fights on the ice, because I happen to watch for more then one game.

Exactly. Tensions were running high, there's a lot of bad blood between these two and they are competing for the same slot in the same division. On top of that Colorado was way way up in points.
Burtuzzi screwed up and took it too far, but he didn't intend it to be this way. Hockey is a violent sport, shit happens.

Bertuzzi should get the rest of season including teh play offs then that should be the end of it. That's what they gave him... rest of the season + playoffs. However, it's going to be reevaluated at the start of next season to determine whether he should miss any games then.
All I can say... is... I just want Steve Moore to get better. If he doesn't, then I don't see Bertuzzi ever coming back to play in the NHL. Not because of league suspension, but just because his heart wouldn't be in it. I feel for both guys... but most of all, just wish this horrible thing never happened.

I watch more than one game. Don't think that I just watched this one game and I was all of a sudden I thought I was an expert on hockey. I'm not an expert...none of us are. And I'm not saying that Moore is perfect. I understand that hockey is violent, part of the reason I respect the sport so much! But what Bertuzzi did was totally uncalled for. Because of the fact that he attacked Moore from behind...he did intend to maim him. Did he try to kill him? I don't think so. Did he intent to hurt him? Yes...I believe he did. And the only reason why Bertuzzi is upset is because he knows he fucked up. I realize he's not the only one who's done this. And every other hockey player that's done this should be punished severly. If this incident costs Moore his career, then Bertuzzi shouldn't play. If Moore is able to come back and play, then Bertuzzi should be too. But if Moore can't play, neither should Bertuzzi...An Eye for an Eye! Fair is fair. Bertuzzi should have thought about this before he did it! He could easily end his own career. He fucked up!

He fucked up! of course he intended to hurt him, that's kind of the whole point of punching someone in the head.
if this incident comes as a surprise then people haven't been paying attention. i think it's kinda stupid that the players beat on each other so much, but as long as the league allows it to happen, and the fans cheer it on, it will continue to happen.
blame bertuzzi, but the league and us fans let it happen every day. the media is eating this up, and so are you.
oh ya, and thanks for my first negative rep point Ms. Hanson... maybe you should try handing out some positive ones first next time.

Aright off this Bertuzzi shit for a minute:
My San Jose Sharks are first in there division , and 3rd overall in the West.
We played Dallas last night who is right behind us by only 3 points , so needless to say it was a very important game.. So for the first 2 periods they dominated us and it was 3 to 0 going into the 3rd. I pretty much wrote them off for the game and as I was about to change it when we scored a goal with about 6 minutes left. then Jonathon Cheechoo somehow scored 2 goals , one them being with 37 seconds left to tie it and send it into overtime.. Well nobody scored in OT so we tied but did come away with one point.. Its pretty rare for a team to be dominated so bad and come back like that, especially against Marty Turco one of the best goalies in the NHL by far this season.
So to the Dallas fans on the board...."hahahaha" :p
And to any Calgary fans here , there's a good chance we will be meeting in the first round of the playoffs...So bring it... :D

Good. Back to relevant stuff. :D
I didn't watch the Sharks/Stars game last night, but I figured SJ would be in tough the way Dallas has played recently (especially at home) and the way they seem to do fairly well against the Sharks, not to mention the fact they're chasing them down.
I don't blame you for pretty much writing off that game... down 3-0 over halfway through the third against one of the stingiest D teams around. That's a HUGE tie for the Sharks, not only in terms of the standings, but hopefully it will give them a nice boost of confidence as well. I'm hoping they still hold on to that division even though Marco Sturm went down a couple weeks back.
I'm a Sharks fan almost as much as a Canucks fan... one of those weird things when I was young (like 8-9) and I cheered for the Sharks when they came into the league because I thought their logo/jersey was cool. And I've kinda stuck with them as a closet team through all the years, good and bad.
Playoffs start 3 weeks today, kids. :D

Sweeeet. Last two posts (ignoring the Leafs who i STRONGLY DISLIKE hahaha) have been for my two fave teams other than the Canucks.
The Bruins are gonna be tough. I think Raycroft's the real deal in goal and guys like Thornton and Murray can be absolutely deadly when they're going well. Not to mention picking up Gonchar and Nylander helps a bunch. HUGE win over the Leafs yesterday to pull up more in the Northeast, especially since it looks like whoever of those three doesn't win the division could end up playing each other in round 1.
I'm just pissed that the Bruins are NEVER on TV out here. I'd love to watch their game against Tampa this weekend... but alas.

Yea , last nights tie was really big! It kept is 3 up on them and like you said hopefully it will give us more confidence when playing them , cuz they have just had our number! Espesially Turko! That guy is so damn good..
I think we really need to have at least the 3 seed because if we dop to the 4 seed we'll probly play Nashville in the first round , and they are one of the other teams that we have struggled against this year
But no matter what Im just psyched that we'll be in the playoffs this year , I was sooo dissapointed last season  Sports Illustrated predicted us to go to the Cup and we didnt even make the playoffs! So this year was a pleasent surprise! :D

Yeah... I'm actually surprised at how well they bounced back after the horrible season last year.
Lucky for the Canucks (or not)... they play the Stars when they're pissed off. Might be ugly, especially considering I don't think they've played that great since the Bertuzzi thing (and they weren't really before), and Dallas is not only playing well but angry about blowing that lead. Not to mention they're only three back of the Canucks as well.
Lookin forward to the last few weeks of the season... before the real stuff starts. It's gonna be fun.

wow, can't believe i never saw this thread before... i love the hockey... although i am a Ranger fan (ducks hurled vegetation), i live in Calgary and though im not a fan of them, i am very glad to see their resurgence this season and them finally making the playoffs again... it's great for the team and the city... Overall it's been a very interesting season and even though my team isn't making the playoffs, again, i am just soaking up the hockey just in case there is to be a lockout in september... kinda surprised that topic hasn't come up yet in this thread, but then again, it's still a ways away and there is lots of hockey yet to be played... I'd really love to see some team other than Colorado, Detroit, New Jersey, win the Cup this year... so very sick of seeing those three rotate winning it for the last 10 years or so... and Dallas doesn't need it either... and as much as i like the group of guys on Tampa Bay, i don't think them winning the Cup would be enough to actually atract some interest in Florida for the game... The crowds they aren't getting there is just sad... So, basically from the West i'd like to see Calgary, San Jose or Vancouver take it, and from the East, Ottawa, Montreal, or Boston would be great...

Reason why I haven't mentioned anything lockout-related is that I don't really want to think of such a thing. I'd rather focus on what's going on now (the game itself) than worry about that kind of stuff. If something happens in the off season... then... it sucks. But... I'm not going to worry about it now.
Canucks aren't looking too good right now. I think they'll miss Bertuzzi more than they initially thought they would.
I'd DEFINITELY love to see someone different win the Cup this year. I'm sick of Colorado, Detroit, and New Jersey (and I guess Dallas too) being up there all the time. I'd love to see teams like TB, Boston, Philly, Ottawa, Montreal representing the East, and teams like Vancouver, San Jose, Calgary, etc do well in the West.

yeah i hear what you're sayin' Colin... i don't like the idea of the looming lockout either, and i dread it if it should come to pass... i need my hockey fix every year at the same time... a friend of mine was saying that he would welcome the break from hockey that the lockout would bring, and i basically just said to him, "what the hell is wrong with you?"... some people... yeah the Bertuzzi thing could have done one of two things for the Canucks i think, and that was a) banded them together more so and made them even tougher to play against or b) have them fall apart quite quickly... unfortunately it was the latter scenario and they are dropping fast, with Calgary likely to surpass them for 2nd place in that division... i think Naslund not being at 100% makes a big diff too, as he has what? 2 goals in his last 16 games? what is that? Jovanovski being out hasn't helped either... oh well, i guess we'll just have to keep watching to see what happens...

I'd love to see Canucks/Avs in a West final. Of course, there's gotta be a lot of stuff that needs to happen for that, namely Detroit, San Jose, Dallas, etc being knocked out. But a series between those two, especially at that stage in the playoffs, would be incredible.
I like the fact there's not many "boring" teams in the playoffs this year. And TONS of contenders with no single favourite.
BTW - Avs beat the Kings... which I *think* eliminates the Kings. Too bad... I was hoping they'd sneak in just because of all the injuries and stuff they've had to overcome.
Nucks SHOULD beat the Coyotes.. 4-0 after 2 - Colorado should stay 1 up on Vancouver.

Their attacking was good but defence is no where near as good as teams like New Jersey. Also they had a spell where they were lax and conceded 3 sloppy goals in second period.
In the Detroit vs Columbus game one of the blue jackets took a nasty hit when teh gate was open he crashed gut first into the corner then smacked his face on the step.

Since the Sharks have clinched #2 (and can't get #1)... wouldn't it be nice if they sat a few guys for the game against the Canucks on Friday? ;) HUGE game... Vancouver's technically ahead of the Avs now (tied, but the Canucks have the tiebreaker), and if they win their last two they're guaranteed the division regardless of what the Avs do. Of course those last two are in San Jose, and against an Oilers team that's gonna be fighting for their lives.

:p I predicted we'd win in 6 games so we'd lose 2 this is just one of those two games Stars will win overall. I watched the Nashville vs Detroit game last night Nashville dominated the first period and second was pretty even but Detroit turned it on in third. Langs goal was very skillfull great stick handling.

Vokoun? Yeah. That was pretty damn sweet. I wasn't home for the late games (missed the Canucks win), but I enjoyed watching the first two periods of the Bruins beating the Habs. You can't judge everything based on one game... but a lot of the people who are doubting the Bruins in terms of playoff goaltending experience may have been quieted down last night.

I don't think the Stars are going to get past the Avs. Abeischer has had a very good record against them in the season, and he just showed that he was up to keeping things rolling in the post season. The Avs also have momentum now that they left that game 3-1, the team feels good and we get home ice for the next game and the 7th game.

I wanna agree w/ you , but I think the X factor is Turco..He didnt have a good game last night , and if he continues on like that , they will defanitely lose. But if he plays like I know he can , I wouldnt be surprised to see a game 7.

Ehhhh. It's one game. YES it's a big game, but the series is far from over. Dallas will be better, I am sure. However, if the Avs get rolling, and Aebischer keeps playing well, they could be very scary. And perhaps they like the fact they have a bit more of an underdog role than they usually do.
As much as I dislike the Avs, I'd still love to see a Canucks / Avs series at some point this playoff.

Well here's my two cents... majorly disappointed with the first night of the playoffs... not one of my teams i was hoping to win, did... Detroit, well i am only cheering for them caz i have two of their players in my hockey pool, but neither of them got points! Dallas looked flat from what i saw and the Avs looked fired up, so the outcome wasn't too surprising... Turco had some bad luck last night on that second goal that went in off of Numminen... In fact that's what i noticed in the other two games as well... Canucks were fired up and though the Flames had a good physical presence, their passing and puckhandling were brutal... and there was a couple of weird bounces in that game too... first, Simon's goal, wtf was that? and then Sedin's goal, just lucky bounce off of Leopold's skate... the Habs just looked bad against the Bruins... outshot 23-9 in the first period pretty much tells the story of that game... well, here's for hoping the second night goes better... Go Sharks, Lightning, Devils and Senators!!!

All teh first time play off goalies last night played well from teh sound of it. Vokoun and Lagace both looked solid in the Red Wings vs Preds match Vokoun especially in the first period. Abiecher (spelling?) made 37 saves. I din't see the game since i live in England but from what teh reports say Stars didn't get into teh game until third period so hopefully was just a blip. I still think we will win and we get game 4 live here next wednesday so that should be good.

I only watched a bit of the Nucks/Flames last night.... I *did* see the highlight of the Jovo interference thing... and...yeah. That was bad. Canucks/Flames game is quite good thus far. The only bad part is that Cloutier went down with an injury in the 1st period. :( I'm not too sure how good of goalie Hedberg is, but it's a big loss for the Canucks, depending on how serious the injury is. This might be the break the Flames needed to get past the Canucks. It depends on whether or not Hedberg will be able to handle the pressure, and also how good the Canucks defense is. I know, I want the Flames to win, but it sucks for the Canucks. :(
By the way, the score is 0-0. The 'Dome is rockin' by the looks of it. I only wish I could have gotten a ticket. :(

Colin
04-12-2004, 03:13 AM
I don't know about you... but I kinda figured when we got Hedberg at the start of the year, that he'd be the guy playing in the playoffs. I didn't think it would be... game 85 that he became the starter for this team, but... I had a feeling it would happen eventually, either due to injury or whatever. I personally have more confidence in him than I do Cloutier... not that he's a bad goalie or anything, but something about him in the playoffs scares me.
I'm not surprised with the two other home teams (Montreal and Nashville) winning to avoid 3-0 deficits.
Devils are far from finished... although Stevens being out doesn't help matters too much.

definitely happy to see the Sharks up, and to see the Pred's tie up the series... Flames had a helluva game and tied up their series too against the 'Nucks... I think that has been the most entertaining series so far... shitty about the Habs... looks like they're done... shoulda been a penalty call on Green for slashing Kovalev, but he should have kept playing, especially after Riberio did that "I've been shot and am now dying!!" routine at the end of game 3... they can't expect the refs to take them seriously anymore when they get hurt...

Was Kovalev even that hurt though? Yes - perhaps there should have been a penalty on that play, but there wasn't, and Kovalev can't sell it to make it look like he broke his wrist and expect the whistle to be blown. Between the Ribeiro thing, and the Kovalev thing 9-10 years ago against Quebec... it doesn't surprise me that he may have been hurt but they ignored it. I don't even think it was THAT horrible of a slash either... even though it is one that would get called a lot.
I personally quite enjoyed the moment. ;)
You might as well take Minnesota green from last year and replace it with Calgary red... because this story is looking eerily familiar to Canucks fans. Good on the Flames though.

I can't believe I'm about to say that the Flames are one game away from advancing to the second round....And it's awesome! :D Tickets for game 6 go on sale later this morning at 10, and it's now a MUST that I get a ticket. I hope I get one, what since it would mark my first NHL playoff game since 1995, so it's been awhile.
Moving on to the Canucks/Flames game, though. I thought it was good. I was a bit surprised, but overjoyed, that the Flames won, and now can win the series on Saturday at the 'Dome. Auld played very well for the Canucks I thought, but it's their offence that seems to be hurting them more than anything. They'll need to really step it up a notch the next game, especially since the Flames will be even more hungry for this win since it's in Calgary. So, GO FLAMES!
On a side note, I totally forgot how crazy one city can get when their NHL team makes the playoffs. It's been that long. People have Flames flags on their vehicles and pretty much everywhere you go you see "GO FLAMES GO" signs. It's awesome. I just can't wait to see the fans' reaction if the Flames do in fact win on Saturday, or game 7. It's going to be nuts, and we're not even at the Finals.

well the Sharks have done it... first team through to the next round and proving that their regular season was no fluke... Flames also proving that they are a tough team to face with another win in Vancouver and taking a 3-2 series lead back home to a loud as a fuck Saddledome... surprising win by the Habs to keep their series going, and maybe making a stab at being the big comeback for round one, and the Wings not surprisingly got back on track with Cujo in net... guess we'll start seeing some of the round two matchups developing over the next couple of days... so far so good...

To be honest, if we're gonna lose to someone, I'd rather it be to a team like the Flames than pretty much any other team in the West. I'll definitely be rooting for them if they make it to the next round (unless they play the Sharks. ;) ) Not saying it's over yet... but the Canucks are in mighty tough.
I think Boston thought the Habs would just fold after what happened in Game 4. WRONG. That one caught me by surprise, but... good for the Habs.

Let me just say I really didn't think the game was going to go this long, but it is. It's been quite a good game so far, and I'm really hoping the Flames get the game winner. The reaction of the Flames fans will be off the chart.
GO FLAMES!

I took a nap before work last night... thinking a 4-0 lead was fairly safe. Ooooops.
This Canucks team never goes down easily. Sadly I wasn't home after the first OT, but I heard what happened at work. Weeee.
I think I'm more excited about the possibility of a Sharks/Canucks matchup than anything.

Bugger. Stars and Nashville are both out. On a plus side i guess my pre season prediction of Philadelphia vs Colorado in the final is still on but i'd have happily sacrificed it for teh stars to go through but there is always next season. I'd like to see Ottawa and Montreal go through. I don't mind between Vancouver and Calgary really. Lol prediction of a Vancouver sweep seems incredibly stupid now :p .

I'm hoping Vancouver will take Calgary tomorrow. As of now I figure the odds of that happening are about even.
I want to see the Bruins beat Montreal, but am not sure if that is going to happen--the bruins got a good start, but have been languishing. I'm completely neutral on the Toronto-Ottawa game.

Well, game 7 is where we're headed with the Flames/Canucks series, and it should be a good game. I don't think just because it's in Vancouver will mean the Canucks will have any kind of advantage or anything, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the Flames pull off the upset in Vancouver. It's do or die now for the Flames, too.
GO FLAMES!

I thought the Bruins had it. They're falling apart.
I'd like to see Calgary take it. :)

I actually want to see Vancouver win , cuz that means we'll be playing them and Im sure there gonna be way tired seeing how they'll have gone 7 games w/ Calgary...And If Calgary wins We'll be up against Colorado which will be a tougher series..
Either way its gonna be interesting..

Personally I'd want the matchup as it would guarantee one of my two fave teams in the West final. Did I say that already? ooops.
I don't see the Canucks beating the Sharks in a series... if they happen to get by the Flames.
Three game 7s in 2 nights.... involving all five Canadian playoff teams. This is gonna be beautiful.

I will be watching the Vancouver/Calgary game tonight very intently. Vancouver wins: We play them. Calgary wins: we play Colorado.

Sadly I missed the third period of the Bruins game and the first period of the Canucks game. Good on both the road teams for pulling off the upsets. A combination of hard work and awesome goaltending won it for both the Habs and Flames... and while it's tough having two of my fave teams knocked out in the span of a few hours, I wish both those teams the best (especially as they're both Canadian and we usually rally behind Canadian teams this time of year). OH. And for those who haven't seen much of Jarome Iginla.... he is the real deal. They criticized him after the first game, and he responded. Perhaps his only downfall last night was the fact he missed that empty-netter which would have stopped any chance of the Canucks tying... but he was still amazing throughout the series. Calgary COULD cause problems for the Wings. It's gonna be fun.
And now... at least for me, it's all about the Sharks.
Schedule for Round 2... even though there's still a game tonight, we know the winner will play Philly regardless. Any picks?
Sharks in 6 over Colorado
Flames in 7 over Detroit
Habs in 6 over Tampa Bay
Flyers in 7 over Toronto OR Sens in 7 over Philly (depending on who wins tonight)
stolen from yahoo sports... all times EDT i would presume.

Well, those were some very exciting games to watch, Im glad to see the Canadiens knock the Bruins off, just for the fact they were the underdogs..Not as satisfied w/ the Nuks/Flames game though..I was hoping we would play the Nuks in the second round just cuz they would be so tired from goin 7 games with Calgary. But Colorado and San Jose will be a great series and I cant wait till thursday..Its gonna be a tough series but I think we can win it..:]
Sharks in 7 over Avs
Calgary in 7 over Wings
A Calgary/Sharks west Final would be sweet.
Tampa in 5 over Habs
Toronto(if they advance) in 6 over Philly
Philly in 6 over Ottowa(if they advance)

Seems like everyone has more then 48 hours between games at lease once, except the Habs/Lightning! The Flyers serie is even worst! Thursday, Sunday then Wednesday! That's a lot of days off! Anyways I'll get to see another Habs playoff match! Just need to buy my tickets tomorrow!
My picks:
Habs in 6
Leafs/Ottawa in 7
Flames in 6
San Jose in 7
This round will be really good. I'm mostly gonna watch the Habs/Lightning serie, and it should provide some nice games. Both have fast skaters, and it won't be an all physical serie compare to the one against Boston!

well the second round is pretty much set, and i gotta say im fairly pleased with the first round for the most part... helluva finish to the Flames/Canucks tilt, and damn is Iginla the man or what? awesome that the Habs come from 3-1 down and win for the first time in their franchise history, which, for that franchise is a pretty amazing fact... my picks for the next round are,
Lightning in 6 over the Habs,
Senators in 7 over the Flyers or the Flyers in 6 over the Leafs
in the West,
Sharks over the Avs in 6,
Flames over the Wings in 6...
LET THE SECOND ROUND BEGIN!!!
oh wait, Leafs vs. Sens tonight still... ummm... Go Sens... fuckin' Leafs...
