This looks really cool. I can't wait for it to come out. I really like Will Smith. The only thing I hope is that it's not a "MIB" but with robots instead of aliens.

But from the trailer it looks a bit more on the serious side.

Yeah..I like Will Smith...he's a funny guy! :p :D
Movie looks pretty good...I'd go see it.
It's like a "oh, no...the robots are taking over the world!" movie. :p :D

There are a ton (and I mean a ton) of movies that have similar themes. The most recent one that I absolutely love is Spielberg's A.I.. I, Robot is just another random effects romp with Will Smith.

This looks a bit different than AI, IMO. This one the robots seem a bit more menacing. Plus, Will Smith is much more likeable than Haley Joel Osment (or however you spell his name)

That movie would have been much better if Kubrick had lived to finish it.
Also, I doubt that NYC will be abandoned if ocean levels rise. Just look at Venice.

I think Will Smith is a pritty funny man, I've enjoyed pritty much all his acting...from Fresh Prince of Belair to MIB. So I'm positively sure he'll make me enjoy this movie as I watch it.

lol, the movie theatre I've been goin to...it's been showing previews and even had a lil show to explain the movie before the movie previews. And to me, it looked pritty decent. However, before they showed the lil explaination show...they just had a preview of robots for the future...and I SERIOUSLY thought there was a company making robots for people to buy and for their convenience...and I was like "that's stupid..what is this world coming to?!? we're gonna die!." lol, but then I saw the thing with Will saying stuff about the movie like a month after, which made me feel stupid.

As a note, I do not believe this is based on Asimov's famous work but on another work titled "Hardwired." This is the current rumor and it certainly looks like Asimov would be spinning in his grave if this were truly centered around his short story.

I think I'd have to agree that Asimov would be spinning in his grave if this is supposed to be based on his story.

Still, I think I may just try to view it as a seperate entity and judge it on it's own merits.

I have been a huge Issac Asimov fan since I first started reading SF when I was 9. Reading this genre along with rock music I feel kept me sane through my turbulent teen years. This prolific author(over 340 books) died in 1992 of heart and kidney failure as a consequence of AIDS contracted from a transfusion of tainted blood during his December 1983 triple-bypass operation. He is one of my favorite non-fiction and SF authors and a great role-model for atheists and humanism.

The 'I, Robot' (1950) short story is only a taste of his original hybrid of crime/SF. The other books in this vein are: The Currents Of Space(1952), The Caves Of Steel(1954) and The Robots Of Dawn(1983). There are over a dozen of his books and short stories based around '3 Laws of Robotics'. This author is to SF as JRR Tolkien is to fantasy. He has inspired many of the SF literature and films that came after with his themes and ideas..

In 1978 the amazing Harlan Ellison (A Boy And His Dog, Star Trek, The Twilight Zone) wrote a screenplay for 'I, Robot' with collaboration by Asimov. This is not based on that, as Ellison is notoriously anti-Hollywood. Its actually written by Akiva Goldsman, who also did 'A Time To Kill', 'A Beautiful Mind' and 'Practical Magic'. He is also screen-writing 'Memoirs Of A Geisha', 'The Divinci Code' and 'The Cinderella Man', to be released in 2005. I love all those books, so best of luck to him.

I think the trailer looks excellent and this might be the beginning of a great new movie franchise.

The movie looks really good, I saw it in the previes when I saw Hellboy. Hopefully it isn't misleading.

Cyra

I saw it in the previews for Hellboy also..it reminds me of that Arnold movie, Sixth Sense or something (the one with the clone)..that..and Collateral Damage were good movies (we actually saw that the night it came out I think..damn terrorists making the movie not sell cause it was good)..anyways, those things scare me.

Personally, I'm glad I was born in this generation cause robots...for every human. Would scare me. Then again, if I was born in future generations I'd most likely be adapted to liking them. Anyways, them things look scary. In the previews, they made 5 million robots or something, and they said, "Why would they kill humans? They're not programmed to do so." Then Will's like..."Told you..I was the only one who predicted this?!" :D it all began when a robot threw a human out of this building I think. A biiig building.

I might see it if it gets good reviews...simple as that.

OMG, this movie was so good!!!

I was expecting just a dumb action movie, but it is really good!

The plot was surprisingly non-cliche, the action was awesome, there were some lines that made everybody in the theater laugh uncontrollably...it was...um...good?

Everybody go see it now! :p

PS. Will Smith is hella buff in this movie. Yum.

LOL...well, in THAT case, I ought to add a disclaimer that if you're an Asimov fan, ignore what you know, and you will enjoy the movie much better.

I have a feeling it will be a bit like Troy, where all of us classics geeks were screaming bloody murder at how much they butchered the original story, but everyone who hadn't read The Iliad said it was the best movie ever.

Dude! what is up with all these kick-ass summer movies? This is another winner.

Will smith was funny as ever. The robots were interesting to look at.

There were some allusions to star trek ( Data, Nanoites (sp). "Resistance is Futile") and star wars episode 1 (the phalanx of droids). But it takes place in Chicago 2035. So all is cool.

Trace needs to watch out... because communist robots might just declare martial law in her city in about 31 years.

Highly recommended...

p.s. Did anyone read Isaac Asimov's stories? I saw this referenced in the yahoo reviews, and that person said it lost all meaning on film. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has this same perspective or could challenge it...

I personally never studied Asimov.

Llywelyn
07-17-2004, 04:18 PM
At the end of the movie it says, very clearly "Inspired by Isaac Asimov." It took an idea from his world and ran with it.

It is not an intensely philosophical piece, though there are some of the lingering questions left in the background. Still, I quite enjoyed it the same way I enjoyed Sphere. The movie lost all of the meaning of the book, but it was still good as a movie on its own terms.

Did anybody remember "In the Future, There Will be Robots"? An interpretive dance performance by Claude Magenot.

I saw him move through space... in very tight pants. Interpretive dance cannot be performed in baggy clothing. It's very important.

I have seen the trailers and I hate what they have done to one of my favourite Sci Fi books of all time. If you are blessed with ignorance and can enjoy the Will Smith spectacle for what it is, then good luck to you.

I just weep for the day they have Vin Diesel playing "The Stainless Steel Rat"...

I don't think they butchered the philosophy in order to make an action flick as badly as say, Burton did with Planet of the Apes. (Not that it was a bad movie, it was fun, it was just devoid what made the original so poignant) I was disappointed by how they brought the ideas down to the everyman level by explaining the bejeezus out of them, but without the nuances. Some of the action, especially towards the end, trampled (sometimes literally) over the explanation of a concept.

*spoilers to follow*
Like when Viki is explaining her reasoning behind the revolution, the explanation is simple and coarse, and goes without actually connecting the dots logically. The "Ghost in the Machine" theory of computer evolution is about as dumbed down as it can get. I believe it was dumbed down because the average public has no concept of pure logic and its relationship to how computers really work, so without the metaphor of evolution, the "character" of Viki and her motivations are too foreign to grasp. It would have been far more horrifying if they had stuck it out with the cold logic and left out the idea that the machines evolved in some way. The "truth" of it is that if the system could "evolve" it would probably come out more like Sonny than Viki. Viki would be the result of it not evolving since Viki extrapolates the logical conclusion of the Three Laws, where Sonny can break them instead.
*end spoiler*

I did like the movie though. I think they did as well as hollywood can be expected to in explaining the idea of the three laws and their failure. I was just disappointed that they chose the "evolution" route rather than taking Asimov's chosen method of demonstrating by example the failure of perfect logic.

I felt sorry for the robots at first when Will was pushing them around and stuff.

But anyway- I just saw it- BEST movie I've seen since Kill Bill. And to me, it wasnt even about robots all along- it was about humans.

SPOILER AHEAD
Like when Viki reveals that the robots are being aggressive to save humans from themselves- because of war, weapons, and other humanly things like killing each other.
/END SPOILER
I liked Sonny. Best character (though he was sort of a robot) I've seen in a movie since Elle Driver in Kill Bill... =o And I espercially like when he took the girl hostage and winked and...blah blah blah. Ahem, okay, I wont spoil anymore.

Converse got the award for King of All Product Placements in this movie.

1- The money shot of the shoe as he pulls it out of the box

2- His line about it being vintage 2004 converse

3- The chief saying 'nice shoes'

4- His anguish over getting them messed up in the tunnel

I haven't seen such a shameless product placement since Nike in Knight's Tale.

Haha, how true. There was also the JVC stereo but it didn't get as much attention. I guess I should be bothered by the Converse shoes more, but I thought it was kinda funny - "Vintage 2004" hehe. Kinda unrelated, but TR2 pissed me off because of blatant product placement. It wasn't subtle in the least. Not that it ever is. Anyway...

My response to the movie: I hadn't planned on seeing it, but I'm so glad I did. I loved it. The attempted humor was mostly pretty lame, but I loved the story, effects, acting... everything. I guess maybe it's because I'm into Chobits... and the whole idea/storyline involving robots fascinates me. So much that I bought the book... but after reading this thread it sounds like it won't be like the movie. I did start reading it and noticed a difference. That's okay though. I'm sure it'll still be a good read. Although, if it's so much different, why is there a picture of Will Smith on the cover? I'm a little confused - is the movie I, Robot based on the book called Hardwired? Did Asimov write that too? In a link Elric posted, it says the movie was originally titled Hardwired. Can someone dumb it down for me? Thanks.

http://www.evboard.com/showpost.php?p=271826&postcount=18

^ Thanks Elric for all that info, it was helpful! I'm excited about The Da Vinci Code and Memoirs of a Geisha hitting movie theaters... those are two books I love. Well, I haven't finished The Da Vinci Code, but I read Angels and Demons and if it's anything like that, I'm in love again.

Sorry for the double post here, but this is a little unrelated to my last one, so I think it'll be okay. Besides, what's the use of posting if it isn't gonna drag the thread back up to the top and get people reading it? ;)

I found this: http://www.killermovies.com/i/irobot/articles/4205.html
It's short, but interesting! When I saw the nude scene I wondered if it was necessary. Apparently it is! But either I didn't catch on or they didn't make the reason for it clear enough. *shrug* Oh well. I laughed when I read that they edited out the "real" nudity, and that it was the most expensive CG shot. Hah!

I just finished the book. It's really good! It is way different though. The movie has the same premise - conflicts with the three laws - and some of the same characters, but the storyline is totally altered. I like both though, and I just finished writing a livejournal entry comparing I, Robot to Chobits. Take a look if you're interested:

I know this is about the movie but I just finished the book and I have to say (apologies to Elric) I was a little disappointed. Not in the stories themselves (for being written in 1950 the ideas and threadlines are actually pretty astounding) but in the writing itself. The characters aren't well developed and the dialogue's pretty lame. I don't know, I grew up on Bradbury and Tolkien, both contemporaries although Bradbury's closer in style, and even though it's heretical to say in SF circles I found Asimov a little weak. I'll caveat that by saying I haven't read the Foundation novels so it's possible that I, Robot just isn't his best work. I'm sure Elric will enlighten me.

I just rented the movie, and really enjoyed it. I like the plot quite a bit, that now i'm tempted to read the book.

I think the nude scene was absolutely important ;) Anything to have Will Smith do a nude scene. But I don't know why the'd call it a "full" nude scene, when all we saw was the shilouette of his butt.
