I saw the classical music thread, it seemed a shame not to have a jazz thread as maybe the only truely american musical art form.
I play trumpet so my favorites are of course:
Louis Armstrong
Maynard Ferguson
Arturo Sandoval
Dizzy Gillespie
Early Miles Davis - before he became whacked out on drugs.
Other non-trumpeters:
Bebop:
Charlie Parker
John Coltrane
(both geniuses in spite of the heroin not because of it as many contend)
Big Band Swing:
Count Basie
Duke Ellington
(Though Benny Goodman and the like bore me to tears!)
Brian Setzer's band swings pretty hard though.
Pat Metheny if you like fusion guitar - which I do!
But it's hard to find anyone playing jazz anymore. There are a few, but nobody knows who they are. Don't get me started on that mush called smooth jazz. More like elevator music. Chris Botti brings shame to his trumpeter heritage!
But I digress.
Who else likes jazz?

I'm still trying to get into the genre, but most of everything I've heard, I've liked.
Right now though, I'm mostly into vocal jazz and mostly lean toward the more accesible stuff. Absolutely love Jane Monheit, her version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow has pretty much become her signature song.
Plus Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is a fantastic album.

Pat Metheny is what I have grown up on :D I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert last year. He rocks mah world.
Other jazz artists who I love:
Chick Corea (best pianist evar. "Spain" is fantastic. I got to meet him after a concert he played in NYC :D)
Al Dimeola (writes the coolest tangoes and jazz I've heard)
Duke Ellington
Louis Armstrong
And others :) Jazz is amazing. I <333333 jazz.

Might I suggest early Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney? Many will point out Billie Holliday but I'm not a huge fan. For something more modern - Diana Krall, Nancy Wilson (not the Heart sister).
And you are correct, Kind of Blue is a landmark work. Should be on everyone's essential listening list.

A few years ago when I was really into guitar I say Pat Metheny in Kansas City. Just blew me away. It's not for everyone - he's a little out there but rarely do you get to see an artist with such technical ability just run with his creativity. And having such a great time doing it too! Great show!

Oh. Man. Do I hate smooth jazz? Yes, oh yes, I do hate smooth jazz. Sheesh...
I am a beginner to the world of jazz. I only know one person who is really into jazz, and we don't talk much. I really like what I have heard though; it seems my preference is big band swing and bebop. Any suggestions?

Yeah, I've listened to all of them at some point, just never really in depth. Diana Krall is the one who I've for the most part, I would say I've followed to any extent. Though I do like Billie Holiday and Ella.
And thanks for your initial suggestions. For the large part I've heard most of them to an extent as well. I've been to a couple of small venues around the city just to get a sampling of some of what's out there.

i like a kind of fusion flamenco with jazz, one of my favourite album on this style is "lágrimas negras"(black tears) by Bebo Valdés and "el cigala", if you have th chance to listen to this album take it.
Another great musician is Vicente Amigo, he is more flamenco than jazz but he rocks, i specially recomend form this guy "ciudad de las ideas" and "poeta" the last one is performed with an orchestra, and it has a really classical music reminiscence.he's the best flamenco guitarist ever with Paco de Lucía
he guys i forgot before, but if you live close to new york or in new york city, don't miss the chance of watching Vicente amigo in live, in Flamenco festival new york 2006 here it is a link with more information

I know lots of my friends drumers (3 of 5) are playing jazz. I love to hear them when I we meet on MDK concerts in my town. One of them Raszu is the best jazz young artist in my country. He plays in lots of jazz bands and they have some singels too like " Sing, sing..":)

I play trumpet too. Well, I should say that I used to. I played in symphonic, jazz and marching band from 5th grade up (joined marching band i the 7th grade though). That was years ago. The past few years, I haven't really had the time to play. I miss it. But yes, I love jazz.
