The most recommended tool for recording is Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net). It's a freeware program, and it's the most user friendly one out there. You can read more about the program here (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/).

For those of you looking for some great programs, and willing to pay a pretty penny, I'd recommend Adobe Audition (http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/) or Cakewalk (http://www.cakewalk.com/). Both of those are closer to the 'professional' level of recording than Audacity.

Under volume control (which you can find under start > accessories > entertainment > volume control) click on options and then properties. Then tick the recording option and make sure microphone is checked. Aside from that, do the obligatory 'is it plugged in' check too. If it's not either of those, I'm not sure what else you could do.

Also, in the program itself, there should be a drop-down menu at the top of the screen towards the center. Make sure "Microphone" is selected. It's probably the same thing as what Brittany said in the post above mine but still...just another way to change inputs.

I've been recording for a while and I always have one problem, the mic records at different sound levels, so sometimes the singing is barely audible, but at other times the voice is blaring loud. Can you level the sound of the voice?

I have two questions:

1: Can you level out the sound on Audacity? Cos sometimes the voice is loud and other times the voice is barely audible

2: Also, is there a way to take off the annoying wind of the 'f's, 'p's, and 's's ? that whooshing sound is annoying ! Thanks a lot ^^

If you're inquiring about hosting for this contest, that's not an issue. I will be hosting all the tracks on my own web server. When participants email me the track, I will upload it to my server. I have plenty of bandwidth to burn.

If your question is one of general application, please look to the Tech Help forum for an answer.

Since the bars are jumping for the microphone, I know it is picking me up somehow. And I see the recording marks moving up and down on the audio recording track itself right below the Karoake track. So that all seems to work fine.

My problem is that it doesn't play back my voice. The red bar stops moving in the top right corner and it just plays the instrumental, not my voice at all. But it seems to be recording it.

So I have my mic infront of me right now all set up and plugged in with Adobe open though I don't have a clue how you record yourself along with the backing track. It records me with no backing track. *eats arm off* Can anyone help? Technology really isn't a girls best friend.

I fixed my problem.. kind of. My audio port sucks ape and my speakers always short out and I just coulnt hear my recording.

For Carmen: You did import the instrumental, right? I don't have Adobe, though I have Audacity. But I opened the file, or it might say import and then pressed record, and that was all. I don't know how your program is though.

Yea I have done that. It was the first thing I did as I had to check which backing tracks I had were readable. It's as if it runs my recording in a different section to the backing track

Carmen, when you're recording, your vocals go on a separate track. Otherwise, you'd be recording over the music you want to listen to and hear with the vocals.

OK I have another problem:

I need to create a karaoke track (not only for this contest but for a school play) but when I'm using audacity the thing still plays the vocals faintly but audibly after seperating /inverting the track! now I'm at a loss of what to do...

okay I use cakewalk sonar. Anyhow, how do you even out the vocals so that they blend well with the backing track? I seem to either have them on too strong or too soft. I can't quite get them to blend. and To me it sounds horrible.

You need a pop filter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_filter). You can make one yourself (http://www.deansabatino.com/2005/08/21/67/) for only a few dollars.

It's in the FAQ on audacity's site. Basically it's split track, highlight the bottom bar, invert, then set both bars to right.

The faq explains it better than me.

For anyone running Mac OS X, go to the Apple website and download Blue Giant. It's shareware, but it's simple and it works nicely. Otherwise try Quicktime Broadcaster.

I think if you want to do that you have to put it into a compressed file. I just upload it to rapidshare or megaupload or somewhere like that and send the link it gives you, because I don't actually know how to attatch the files themselves to an email.

me again...I have a problem when I want to remove the vocal from the song.. I open the stereo track and then split it in to chanels BUT both chanels are lefts..so what I have to do if I need right chanel for later work with program... Does anyone have any ideas?

Hmm, ok I tried to make my own karaoke version with Audacity, and I wasn't albe to get rid of the vocals all the way. You can still hear them faintly in the background, its its distracting cause I want to sustain the notes who I want to sustain them, I don't want to sing exactly what the original did.

So is there any way to get rid of them all the way, and I don't think I can really download the karaoke version. :confused:
